[Touch-packages] [Bug 1923841] Re: [SRU] Increase recording quality
Hello Kai-Heng, or anyone else affected, Accepted alsa-utils into focal-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa- utils/1.2.2-1ubuntu2.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed- focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification- failed-focal. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed. Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping! N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days. ** Changed in: alsa-utils (Ubuntu Focal) Status: New => Fix Committed ** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-utils in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1923841 Title: [SRU] Increase recording quality Status in HWE Next: New Status in alsa-utils package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in alsa-utils source package in Focal: Fix Committed Bug description: [Impact] Audio gets recorded by "arecord" has really bad sound quality when the volume is low. [Fix] https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-utils/pull/69 Switch the default audio format from 8 bits to 16 bits if hardware supports it. [Test] 1. Plug a microphone. 2. Run `arecord | aplay` and say something to the microphone. 3. Only noise can be heard. With the fix applied, the recording is clear. [Where problems could occur] If there's any hardware falsely advertised to support 16 bits, this change will break them. However, this is effectively using `arecord -f cd` or `arecord -f cdr`, so that's not likely. Workaround: 3) Deactivate automatic updates to resolv.conf with sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf 4) Add the line: nameserver 8.8.8.8 to /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head 5) run sudo resolvconf -u 6) Verify DNS resolution: nslookup www.bing.com Server: 8.8.8.8 Address: 8.8.8.8#53 Non-authoritative answer: www.bing.com canonical name = a-0001.a-afdentry.net.trafficmanager.net. a-0001.a-afdentry.net.trafficmanager.net canonical name = www-bing-com.dual-a-0001.a-msedge.net. www-bing-com.dual-a-0001.a-msedge.net canonical name = dual-a-0001.a-msedge.net. With Ubuntu 19.10 the headset was working, there was audio and the mic was perfect for video conferencing. [Steps to reproduce] 1. Connect headset (used blueman to setup and connect) 1.1. When connected the system automatically selects A2DP profile 2. Start playing audio (browser or other) 3. Change profile to HSP/HFP with pavucontrol (or blueman) 4. The audio disappears and microphone is not working (no input) 5. Optionally switch back to A2DP and the audio comes back [Expected] When switching to HSP/HFP the audio should keep playing and the microphone should start working [Notes] I tried with pavucontrol to switch between profiles while playing audio from a browser. As side note there's a led in the headset that still blinks when switching profile. I tried deleting the pulse folder under user's profile .config without success, also reinstalled packages and did a `sudo alsa force-reload` and rebooting several times. Note: not sure this is a duplicate of [Bug #1576559], it looks quite different since the profile changes but the headset stops working. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1926150] [NEW] [SRU] Backport JSON hooks 0.2
Public bug reported: [Impact] We want to be able to use JSON hooks 0.2 in xenial and later releases to display messages to users during dist-upgrade. For xenial, we backport the JSON hook support in its entirety, whereas for later releases, we only need to cherry-pick bugfixes and the v0.2 improvements. [Test plan] We have included unit and integration tests for the new JSON code to test the writer and prevent regressions in future changes. Regressions in other parts of the code should be caught by the test suite. [Where problems could occur] There may be bugs in the JSON code (apt-private/private-json-hooks.*) and in the integration thereof. The JSON hook code is identical to 2.3.2, whereas the integration code needed slight adjustments. The integration changes are limited to adding the hooks, and (for xenial, already in later releases) collecting all unknown package names. We believe the regression potential of these changes to be fairly limited. However, errors in JSON hooks are fatal, so once JSON hooks are running, they can cause apt to fail, which has to be kept in mind. Existing JSON hooks might not expect the new notifications, and break, but we are only aware of the snapd hook and it ignores any unknown notifications, so that should not pose a problem. ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Fix Committed ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu Xenial) Importance: Undecided Status: Triaged ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu Hirsute) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: apt (Ubuntu Impish) Importance: Undecided Status: Fix Committed ** Also affects: apt (Ubuntu Impish) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apt (Ubuntu Focal) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apt (Ubuntu Xenial) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apt (Ubuntu Hirsute) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: apt (Ubuntu Bionic) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu Impish) Status: New => Fix Committed ** Changed in: apt (Ubuntu Xenial) Status: New => Triaged -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1926150 Title: [SRU] Backport JSON hooks 0.2 Status in apt package in Ubuntu: Fix Committed Status in apt source package in Xenial: Triaged Status in apt source package in Bionic: New Status in apt source package in Focal: New Status in apt source package in Hirsute: New Status in apt source package in Impish: Fix Committed Bug description: [Impact] We want to be able to use JSON hooks 0.2 in xenial and later releases to display messages to users during dist-upgrade. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1921939] Re: Create Upstream Repo
Thanks for the bug report, I don't think we have enough resources at the moment to work on creating an upstream version without the Ubuntu specific services, though technically livepatch should be only showing on systems where the service is available so it should work as expected on Debian? ** Changed in: software-properties (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to software-properties in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1921939 Title: Create Upstream Repo Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I started investigating this due to software-properties in Debian being listed as under-maintained per https://mako.cc/copyrighteous /identifying-underproduced-software AFAICT the source of truth for this package is in the current Ubuntu packages. Public bug reported: Hello, When in terminal, with my header on, if I press alternatively the "tab" key or the backspace key when there is no text, I get parasitic noise that come and go, in addition to the error sound. The parasitic noises are most often not loud, but they're here although they definitely shouldn't. Sometimes, it's quite loud too. The bug is not deterministic. Sometimes the tone is higher/lower. Sometimes it disappear on the first time I re-press one key among tab and suppress. Sometimes it requires more key pressing. I'm not sure whether the sound ends up by disapearing after a few retries, or if it just becomes too quiet for me to hear it. The bug doesn't occur when the sound is deactivated I feel like this has something to do with the error sound that is played when I delete and there is no character to delete It is not a big deal in itself. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1924846] Re: [550-254ng, Nvidia GPU 60 HDMI/DP, Digital Out, DisplayPort] Crackling sound during quiet parts of video, with DisplayPort only
On a different machine (no Nvidia) but with the same monitor, I can also reproduce this over DisplayPort but not over HDMI. So I don't think that the Nvidia graphics card/driver is to blame. Instead, it seems like there's a general DisplayPort-related issue either in Linux/Alsa or in my cable/monitor (but if so, then Windows has a workaround for that issue, which could hopefully be implemented in Linux/Alsa too). Either way, it seems like this is something for the Alsa team to debug, and I'm happy to provide more information or run more experiments/tests. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1924846 Title: [550-254ng, Nvidia GPU 60 HDMI/DP, Digital Out, DisplayPort] Crackling sound during quiet parts of video, with DisplayPort only Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When I play YouTube videos, then in the quiet parts of the video (i.e. in pauses between sentences, even if they are very brief), I hear a popping/crackling sound on my headphones connected through my DisplayPort monitor and my Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 card (I have this PC: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/hp+pavilion+550+254ng+intel+core+i5+6400 and an Asus PB248Q monitor). Depending on the video and how many pauses the speakers make, this is very annoying. I've run a long series of experiments, see https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=347176 for details. In summary, I can reproduce this: - With any installed Linux OSes (Ubuntu or Mint) or with live sticks (tried Ubuntu, Mint, PopOS and Manjaro). - With the open-source driver (Nouveau) or with various versions of the Nvidia driver. - With Chrome or Firefox or even an Audacity recording (from the DisplayPort output's audio monitor in PulseAudio) of the same audio stream. - Even when I try the usual fixes like tsched=0, disabling module-suspend-on-idle, disabling /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save or position_fix=1 or =2. - Even when I don't use PulseAudio, but use `apulse ffplay ...` to play a file directly to ALSA. - NOT on Windows. Any browser and any video/sound file works fine on Windows with exactly the same hardware. - NOT with HDMI. The same card/monitor/headphones connected over HDMI (aka. "HDMI / DisplayPort 3" aka. "hdmi-stereo-extra2" aka. device number 8 aka. "HDMI 2") works fine. Only over DisplayPort (aka. "HDMI / DisplayPort 4" aka. "hdmi-stereo-extra3" aka. device number 9 aka. "HDMI 3") it crackles. - NOT when I save the problematic Audacity recording as a wav/mp3 file (and play it in any media player or with `apulse aplay ...`) or when I convert it to 16-Bit PCM in Audacity (and back to 32-bit float). My suspicion is that this somehow gets rid of the pauses / quiet parts by writing sth like zeros in there. - NOT when I have some other continuous audio running at the same time, e.g. if I turn on some radio in Rhythmbox and play the problematic video at the same time, there's no crackles. Again my suspicion is that this gets rid of the quiet parts -- not in the video, but in the mixed stream sent to the audio device. This bug report is produced from `ubuntu-bug audio` on a freshly created Ubuntu LTS live USB stick with all default values, where I've just reconfirmed that DisplayPort is broken and HDMI works. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1923845] Re: Please compress packages with zstd by default
Aside from the code being wrong - it's missing an apt_pkg.init_config(), it also does not work with the config being setup; it needs to be whitelisted. So we definitely need to SRU APT. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1926023] Re: display broken on logout
I tested some more. After logging out and receiving the broken video mode, I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a textmode login screen. If I then immediately press ctrl+alt+F1 I get to the graphic login screen, and can login again. Pressing ctrl+alt+F1 directly at the broken video mode does nothing, though. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1926248] [NEW] display scrambled - all packages
Public bug reported: shortly after switching to kernel 5.8.0-50 on Apr 16, I got progressively worse display scrambling on all programs. Wrote to ubuntuforums.org Apr 19 but found no resolution. Thinking it was that kernel, I ran on 5.8.0-49 for a day without problem, then it too started the same display glitches. The problem progressed so far that I did a fresh system re-install on Apr 23. After, with the default kernel, 5.8.0-50, scrambling was worse than ever, almost unusable. Fortunately, the second kernel offered was 5.8.0-43. I have run on that kernel for 3 days now with no sign of the scrambling issue. The attached png shows static image corruption examples. The more dramatic strobing, spontaneous jumping from window to window, window re-mapping, video corruption etc., I was unable to capture. Run `arecord | aplay` and say something to the microphone. 3. Only noise can be heard. With the fix applied, the recording is clear. [Where problems could occur] If there's any hardware falsely advertised to support 16 bits, this change will break them. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1926254] [NEW] x509 Certificate verification fails when basicConstraints=CA:FALSE, pathlen:0 on self-signed leaf certs
Public bug reported: [Impact] In openssl 1.1.1f, the below commit was merged: commit ba4356ae4002a04e28642da60c551877eea804f7 Author: Bernd Edlinger Date: Sat Jan 4 15:54:53 2020 +0100 Subject: Fix error handling in x509v3_cache_extensions and related functions Link: https://github.com/openssl/openssl/commit/ba4356ae4002a04e28642da60c551877eea804f7 This introduced a regression which caused certificate validation to fail when certificates violate RFC 5280 [1], namely, when a certificate has "basicConstraints=CA:FALSE,pathlen:0". This combination is commonly seen by self-signed leaf certificates with an intermediate CA before the root CA. Because of this, openssl 1.1.1f rejects these certificates and they cannot be used in the system certificate store, and ssl connections fail when you try to use them to connect to a ssl endpoint. The error you see when you try verify is: $ openssl verify -CAfile CA/rootCA_cert.pem -untrusted CA/subCA_cert.pem user1_cert.pem error 20 at 0 depth lookup: unable to get local issuer certificate error user1_cert.pem: verification failed The exact same certificates work fine on Xenial, Bionic and Hirsute. [1] https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5280.html [Testcase] We will create our own root CA, intermediate CA and leaf server certificate. Create necessary directories: $ mkdir reproducer $ cd reproducer $ mkdir CA Write openssl configuration files to disk for each CA and cert: $ cat << EOF >> rootCA.cnf [ req ] prompt = no distinguished_name = req_distinguished_name x509_extensions = usr_cert [ req_distinguished_name ] C = DE O = Test Org CN = Test RSA PSS Root-CA [ usr_cert ] basicConstraints= critical,CA:TRUE keyUsage= critical, keyCertSign,cRLSign subjectKeyIdentifier= hash authorityKeyIdentifier = keyid:always EOF $ cat << EOF >> subCA.cnf [ req ] prompt = no distinguished_name = req_distinguished_name x509_extensions = usr_cert [ req_distinguished_name ] C = DE O = Test Org CN = Test RSA PSS Sub-CA [ usr_cert ] basicConstraints= critical,CA:TRUE,pathlen:0 keyUsage= critical, keyCertSign,cRLSign subjectKeyIdentifier= hash authorityKeyIdentifier = keyid:always EOF $ cat << EOF >> user.cnf [ req ] prompt = no distinguished_name = req_distinguished_name x509_extensions = usr_cert [ req_distinguished_name ] C = DE O = Test Org CN = Test User [ usr_cert ] basicConstraints= critical,CA:FALSE,pathlen:0 keyUsage= critical, digitalSignature, keyAgreement extendedKeyUsage= clientAuth, serverAuth subjectKeyIdentifier= hash authorityKeyIdentifier = keyid:always EOF Then generate the necessary RSA keys and form certificates: $ openssl genpkey -algorithm RSA-PSS -out rootCA_key.pem -pkeyopt rsa_keygen_bits:2048 $ openssl req -config rootCA.cnf -set_serial 01 -new -batch -sha256 -nodes -x509 -days 9125 -out CA/rootCA_cert.pem -key rootCA_key.pem -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:-1 $ openssl genpkey -algorithm RSA-PSS -out subCA_key.pem -pkeyopt rsa_keygen_bits:2048 $ openssl req -config subCA.cnf -new -out subCA_req.pem -key subCA_key.pem -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:-1 $ openssl x509 -req -sha256 -in subCA_req.pem -CA CA/rootCA_cert.pem -CAkey rootCA_key.pem -out CA/subCA_cert.pem -CAserial rootCA_serial.txt -CAcreateserial -extfile subCA.cnf -extensions usr_cert -days 4380 -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:-1 $ c_rehash CA $ openssl genpkey -algorithm RSA-PSS -out user1_key.pem -pkeyopt rsa_keygen_bits:2048 $ openssl req -config user.cnf -new -out user1_req.pem -key user1_key.pem -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:-1 $ openssl x509 -req -sha256 -in user1_req.pem -CA CA/subCA_cert.pem -CAkey subCA_key.pem -out user1_cert.pem -CAserial subCA_serial.txt -CAcreateserial -extfile user.cnf -extensions usr_cert -days 1825 -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:-1 Now, let's try verify the generated certificates: $ openssl version OpenSSL 1.1.1f 31 Mar 2020 $ openssl verify -CAfile CA/rootCA_cert.pem -untrusted CA/subCA_cert.pem user1_cert.pem error 20 at 0 depth lookup: unable to get local issuer certificate error user1_cert.pem: verification failed There are test packages available in the following ppa: https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf308725-test If you install these test packages, and attempt to verify, things work as planned. [Where problems could occur] If a regression were to occur, it would occur around x509 certificate parsing and validation. It may cause certificates which had previously passed to fail, or certificates which failed to pass. It could potentially cause all certificates to fail or pass. Since this is the openssl package and the package is security-critical, this will need a lot of validation, testing, and likely a review by the security team. One of the commits whic
