Nemo scratches his head, wondering when
front-mounted radiators became illegal and
wondering if Ron's new "US street legal" policy
applies to H4 headlights.

Actually the legality issue would only apply to later busses, due to the
lack of provision for a CAT, plus of course pretty much any bus registered
in California. That isn't nearly as much of an issue as the other reason I
mentioned - the cost. There are a multitude of parts that are different on
the watercooled busses, and some of them aren't cheap. Converting a German
aircooled bus to watercooled with all new factory parts would be a very
expensive (not to mention labor-intensive) proposition.

Labor-intensive yes, very expensive...relative. Yes, it would cost lots of
green to do this if you're using all new parts. Then again, Boston Bob and
Jake Raby aren't exactly selling bargain basement engines either.

Search for "Vortec VW Bus" and you will see a guy who put a 4.3-liter Vortec
V-6 bolted to a Porsche 959 transaxle into a Loaf. How he dealt with the
catalytic converter problem is with a custom exhaust system. His cat lives
under the left-hand battery tray, his muffler under the right, and he loops
the exhaust pipes around the engine.

Interesting idea: Detroit Diesel has a little automotive engine in 2.3l,
3.0l and 3.8l. The little one puts out over 100hp. One of those looks like
it would tuck into the hole in the back real nice; engine adaption to the
transmission is your responsibility, since Kennedy doesn't have an adapter
plate for it.

Re: [T2] New Type 2s with radiators....

2002-01-19 Thread Oldschoolvw

its more work then you think,
the front nose clip is special,
the front floor is special
I even think the dash is made diffurent to hold the heater
plus the water hoses from front to rear

the best way is to forget it, but if you really HAD to do it you would need
to buy a complete front clip, doorpost forward plus at least the bell housing
for the tranny to mount the Golf engine..

easier to buy a vanagon !

Re: [T2] New Type 2s with radiators....

2002-01-19 Thread Jim Mowreader

[EMAIL PROTECTED] says of watercooled Bus conversions:

> its more work then you think,

Oh trust me, I know exactly how much work it is because I'm doing one. Right
now it runs but it ain't presentable.

The radiator sits on a little frame I made from black-iron pipe with steel
tabs welded to it in various strategic places; these tabs hold the frame to
the Bus chassis and the radiator to the frame. Mounted to the radiator tabs
is a Ford pickup radiator. There's five inches between the back of the
radiator and the front of the Bus. I haven't decided how to hide the
radiator--build a fake spare tire or make a Mexican-style black fiberglass
shroud? Decisions, decisions. The Mexican-style shroud's pretty cool,
though.

Moving the fluid to the engine are two stainless pipes the same outside
diameter as the inside diameter of my radiator hoses. Solves the problem of
trying to adapt the hose to the radiator hoses. These run right inside the
frame rails.

There's the engine out of a Taurus back there. It has 135hp. Recommend not
nailing the gas; easy acceleration is fine but just romping on it will do
bad things to your clutch. It's sitting on a Kennedy adapter plate.

You need an electric fuel pump to feed the beast. I got one from a FLAPS.
It's a Bendix. I just asked for a fuel injection pump for a car that doesn't
have the pump in the gas tank, and they fixed me up. Not sure what it was
supposed to go on. I did the return by fiddling with the gas-filler
connector on the tank.

The exhaust system isn't done yet, but I'm doing what the gentleman who did
the Vortec conversion did--cat under one battery box, muffler under the
other, pipes looped around the engine.
