[ubuntu-art] Icon theme suggestion

2007-11-20 Thread H. Bons
Hello!

Lately I've been working on a Tango styled icon theme for
Ubuntu under the name Discovery. I've posted it to my
blog [1] and gnome-look.org [2] and got a lot of positive
responses. It even got to the 5th highest rated icon theme
on gnome-look in 3 days! Some suggested posting the theme
here because Ubuntu is going for a makeover the next
release, so... here it is.

Please note that the theme is far from complete and still
open to a lot of changes.

 Hi all,

a new Member

too private for
 some of us ?

Naming spec compliant yes, but looks, no. The Tango icons look dated
 and cartoonish.
That is a matter of opinion.

Its nice for a consistent look but as far as modern
looking they don't make the cut.

I'll let Ken chime in on this.

Fact is that Tango icons are shipped by many applications
upstream, which gives us time to just fill in the Ubuntu
specific gaps, and even more time to polish the Ubuntu
desktop.

I'm not gonna debate this with you I'm simply telling
you that the
current word on the street is that the Ubuntu-Hardy
icons will not
 look like Tango.

That is a shame, after openSUSE and Fedora, it would only
be one step away of having a unified free desktop style
for The Big Three, without the need for a distro to lose
it's own feel. Maybe this et isn't it, but it is quite
possible to make some set with the Tango style guidelines
and making it look Ubuntu and integrate with the rest.

I'm using it right now - only thing bugging me is the
blue. Would be
great if you could make an all-orange one.

I don't think that's a very good idea usability wise,
tough orange is still the dominant color in this theme. As
has been mentioned before on this list:

I think my biggest complaint about the look of Ubuntu's
interface (the default GNOME, of course --- don't know
about KDE, and sorry to be blunt, but could not care any
less about KDE) is the unicolor-ism of the icons. Color
is an incredibly powerful and efficient mechanism to
convey information, and it is IMHO being sacrificed.
