I agree whole-heartedly, we need more complete themes than we have. We have
a lose collection of both GTK engines and window borders, with only one
complete set. If I knew how to make gtk themes, i would have one sent out
already.

The Fire/Water/Air/Earth remembers me the last Thrice album, The Alchemy
Index. Anyway, I thing that this is a great idea. Instead of shipping 6 or 7
themes, we can ship 4 complete themes inspired on that elements. And it
stills follow the Ubuntu philosophy.

[ubuntu-art] Itrepid theme inspiration ?

2008-04-25 Thread fruchtschwert
I also like the idea of Fire, Water, Air and Earth ..
And there's no doubt a new fresh style has to be created.

By accident I found this wallpaper on the net:

http://img.socwall.com/Abstract/General/200703080925-3379.jpg

Thought the style is something I would like to see for Itrepid Ibex too.
And the rest of this guy's work is also quite impressive.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Itrepid theme inspiration ?

2008-04-25 Thread Sumit Agarwal
Now that I think about it, you are very right that there is a troubling
(yes, not just curious, but troubling) conservatism to Ubuntu art. The
attitude with Ubuntu/GNOME seems to be: if we change it more than a
little bit, certain segments of both new and long-time users will leave
Ubuntu in droves. This is nonsense. Windows XP (Luna style was shocking
for its time! And it is still garishly blue!), Windows Vista, Mac OS 10,
and Mac Leopard all made very dramatic visual departures from their
predecessors. Far more dramatic than Human, even. These did not result
in a downturn in user base, with the possible exception of Vista (and we
all know that in Vista's case it wasn't because of the look!).

Lets be bold. Lets be visionary. And in the process, lets build Ubuntu's
halo. It really is one of the most effective ways to build attention,
and thus users.

Human is already too /caramel/ for many tastes..

there is a curious conservatism at work i think here in Ubuntu Art.
Human was a risky design idea, that half-worked. the relative success of
this theme leaves Ubuntu Art leaders afraid of taking further design
risks. as a result, the graphical presentation of Ubuntu is stagnating
in its own prior bravery.

for the next release i think we'd all be wise to not cower away from the
possibility of widespread disappointment at shipping a radically new
theme - just as Human was when it was introduced. surely it cannot be
worse than promising great changes, as we all did, only to default back
to the known (for an LTS release).

moreso, i think it's safe to generalise that people appreciate attempts
at improvement, being often far more generous in this respect than fear
would advise.

oh, i like both mockups.

Sorry, I meant 'Each tab and window border has a narrow
corresponding-theme-colored strip at the top'.

If you look at the Clearlooks Classic engine included in Gutsy, you will
know what I mean about the strip at the top of a tab. As soon as you select
Clearlooks Classic, you will see that the dialog where you select the GTK
gets a blue stripe for the tab selected. In case of Clearlooks modern, it is
a strip + some gradient in that tab.

The difference is that in this theme, the strip is more like a bell curve.
Slightly thicker in the middle and thinning out towards the end.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Itrepid theme inspiration ?

I think both mock-up links presented (the Windows one and the Ubuntu
one) are really great examples, though they may be a touch too dark for
mainstream tastes (maybe I'm wrong. Vista's taskbar is very dark and so
are a lot of other elements of its UI). I personally think the Windows
shot is slightly better for the sole reason that the main engine
(dialogue boxes, buttons, menubar, etc) is more color neutral.

And, above all else, I REALLY REALLY REALLY think Ubuntu needs a
super-simple color changer!!! We should not expect users to be
experienced colorists! We also should not expect users to like orange
(orange is just about the more unusual PC desktop color theme. Not bad,
but highly unusual)! As in Vista we should have a color picker that
simply selects a main base color (default orange) with the rest of the
color shades generated algorithmically by the back-end. What is great
about the Vista color-chooser is that it is simple, intuitive, and does
not allow the user to select a shade/hue/saturation that visually
'breaks' the interface or makes it illegible. What is stupid about Vista
is that regardless of what main color you choose, there are always
hard-coded cyan accents and highlights that are based off of the default
color.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/window-color-and-appearance.jpg

As far as choosing colors for icons, I sort of agree and disagree.
Firstly, the logistics for that seem tricky. Secondly, I feel like the
icons should 1) be photographically full-color, such that there is not
apparent color 'scheme' to them, and 2) be recognizable by color
independent of the desktop color scheme (i.e. Pidgin is recognized as
much by its purple as by its bird; close/exit is conventionally red).

Maybe I'm wrong =) this is the kind of good discussion we need around
here, and hopefully somebody more skilled than us will be able to code
up a solution for 8.10!

Hi,

I think nobody will blame you for using this screenshot which is, in my
humble opinion, a really good example of how the black/orange theme for
the next cycle should look like.

It reminds me of this one:
http://mossblaser.deviantart.com/art/Ubuntu-8-04-GUI-Design-Idea-72574609
but even better.

I also take advantage of this mail to repeat my opinion, which is that
such a theme would be particularly nice if the colors of
controls/windows/system icons were parametrisable (see
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-art/2008-February/005171.html).

Cheers,

François

[ubuntu-art] Itrepid theme inspiration ?

2008-04-23 Thread Bharat Varma
Hi,

I am only an end-user of Ubuntu and I know squat about UI / UI guidelines or
even how to present what I have in mind using Gimp etc. Could never
understand how to use Gimp either :)

But I would like to draw attention to a visual style I have encountered for
Windows. I have used this myself (love it !!!) and I believe this visual
style is close to what the original hardy guidelines suggested in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/HardyDesign

http://lassekongo83.deviantart.com/art/Elements-VS-82691770

If there is anyone who can take a look at the visual style above, it would
be great.

I didn't know if it was okay to put screenshots of a Windows OS in the
/alternate link on ubuntu site. If it is, I will take permission from the
author and do that. If it is okay to include those screenshots as
attachments to this mailing list, I can do that too.
