Ubuntu One
Do people love or hate the idea of Ubuntu One? Personally I think they are heading in the right direction they are not trying to be your PC they don't want to do all the computing they are just trying to make computing more convenient. Anyway I would love to hear your opinions on it. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
Re: Ubuntu One
I think it's the best thing since sliced bread. For me, I treat usb drives like sun glasses. I either loose them, or somehow break them. Ubuntu One seems to be ideal for this reason, and sync's automatically. I thought it was only just released with 9.10, but someone just told it's been around for a while, which was a surprise. Re: Ubuntu One
I would love to have something like git but which handled binary files properly. Say it just happened to use bsdiff + and was just in the file browser. Of course having it stored encrypted elsewhere is a requirement for some data. As i am a firefox weave user and love being able to sync passwords without fear (private / public key crypto :) ). Being able to do the same thing for files would be a great step forwards. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
Re: phpMyAdmin and MySql Query Browser Passwords
Hi David, On Fri, 2009-11-13 at 22:38 +1100, David Bowskill wrote: Hello All I have the need to construct a database for a voluntary association and wish to use MySQL Query Browser and/or phpMyAdmin. Depending on their requirements it might be easier to find an existing webapp which does 80% of what and they can use that. Designing databases and building the administration code can be a large undertaking. I am very new to all this stuff. MySQL Query Browser and phpMyAdmin both open up OK but ask for : Server Host Name - is this 'localhost '? In the case of phpmyadmin it should be. If you are running query browser on another machine it won't be and you will also need to change your mysql configuration to handle this. User Name - I don't remember setting one - is there a way I can change this to what I want ? Password - Again, I don't remember setting one - is there also a way I can change this to what I want ? You would have been prompted for the root password during the installation of mysql. As you are just starting out you can probably purge the package (and any data) and reinstall it, this time make a note of the password :) Run the following 2 commands: sudo apt-get --purge remove mysql-server-core-5.1 sudo apt-get install mysql-server Note: do not do this if you have real data in your database that you can't replace/reimport. Then you should be right to go again. Cheers Dave -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
USB drives
OPM595 wrote: ... For me, I treat usb drives like sun glasses. I either loose them, or somehow break them. Amen! One of the constant struggles i had when working as a school IT manager was explaining to students that USB drives were just new floppy disks, not permanent storage. We had a kid come to us in tears at least once every month or so after loosing all their work on their USB drive (which they hadn't backed up).
