 Hi Glenn,

(Not exactly the answer you're after but..)
It worked easily with the EEEPC configuration tool

With the 3G USB dongle, should be detected up as a GPRS/UMTS modem.

That sounds like you got the E220, which is being phased out by Optus.
The E169 which is also offered by 3 requires a couple of udev hacks to
get it working or else it shows up as a usb mass storage device with
windows and mac drivers on it.

 Cheers

I have an E169 from 3 mobile and didnt require the udev hacks. Mine was
seemingly happy to detect as a modem. Im still working out all the
settings for 3 so i can hold connection but i can check my signal levels
and data usage fine now and havent had time to transfer all the settings
over from 'doze.

This was mentioned on the list before in relation to bigpong but its how
i managed to communicate with my 3 modem.

Use:
  Username: web
  Password: web

You could probably even waltz into a Optus store plug in a demo unit
and get connected
within 30 seconds.

I haven't, but I may soon be using it.

Based on my research they ship the Hauwei E169 (also used by 3), which
does work with a couple of udev hacks. Most of the new Optus network
outside major centres uses the 900Mhz band, so the E220 will be useless.
An added bonus with the E169 is that they can take an external
directional antenna if you need a better signal. HTH

 Hey guys,

 First post here.
Does anyone use an Optus Wireless Broadband USB Modem on Ubuntu? I am
looking at getting one and just wondering how easy it is to set up? Any
links to pages that might help?

If it is the Huawei E220, I am using a VF branded version and it works
great. Avoid the E169 (as shipped by 3 and others?) it needs some hacks
to udev to make it work properly.

If you want to use the E220 with Network Manager you need to hack a
couple of config files, then it works well. Let me know if you need the
 files.

This week i purchased an E169 from 3 as part of a mobile broadband
package. Im yet to get it up and running but a lsusb shows the modem
straight away (lists as an E620) i just cant seem to convince Kubuntu to
use the thing. Unlike other i havent had the Mass storage device
showing so i guess i need to set up some sort of dialer. Im going to
look into it tonight but after testing on my XP partition its a real dog
to get running under XP with the device changing modes every 5 seconds
for a good minute or two before it can actually connect to the
internet. I dont think these devices were real well designed but at
least now they dont play up under Linux and go straight to modem mode.
Any hint on how to use the detected modem to connect to the net will be
appreciated for me and im sure others. Im gonna have a hack at it
myself anyway and ill post how hard or simple it was to get working for
others using the list.

Thanks
