If more powerful hardware is required what sort of hardware is needed?
Im sure some of us have fairly decent equipment hanging around we dont
need and would be happy to donate it if required. It is the box that
runs our Local server and we should support it.

But that's exactly how many bugs reports are made. Step One is identifying the
symptoms. Then you ascertain the root problem and formulate a solution.

Not knowing the details of the setup, the fix cannot be clear at all. A better
solution might involve more bandwidth, a more finely tuned configuration, a
new version of $PACKAGE, a reverse proxy or a zillion other things.

Yes it is a problem, but let's identify the disease before we prescribe a
treatment.

Well the fix is clear. We need more powerful servers. Or better still, more
servers.

Unfortunately, I am unable to assist in this situation as I am not in a
position to do so.

I wasn't complaining as such, but simply pointing out that it's a continuing
problem that isn't going away. And sooner or later, it must be fixed once
and for all.

Is that an offer of unlimited access to your enterprise grade content
delivery network for ubuntu to use for hosting release mirrors and loco
websites?

If not, then please understand that mirrors are donated, and the loco
sites are hosted on a box donated by canonical. Although canonical puts
some cash into ubuntu, most of it is done via donations of various
types.

If you want a reliable way of getting your ubuntu updates, buy the DVD
https://shop.canonical.com/product_info.php?products_id=202 Buying
items from the ubuntu store gives the project more money to spend on
things such as boxes and bandwidth, although I suspect they have higher
priority items than a few loco sites. IMHO the loco sites are a nice
touch, but I can't remember last time I visited one. I visited the au
planet - to check that my blog was on there :)

This is a long way of saying, ubuntu gives you a lot for free. No one
is making you use it. If it isn't up to your high standards, then
please look elsewhere for options. I think you will find that many pay
for services (such as RHELL's update service) has problems - lets not
even discuss windows update.

Cheers

Dave

I must have missed the email where somebody said it was vaguely amusing.

Are you referring to the archive mirrors being slow after releases? If
so, it's completely unrelated. mekong is not an archive mirror. There's
no easy way to fix archive mirror slowdowns at this stage - we simply
have too many users wanting to upgrade, and need more mirror power!

As for mekong, we have a number of LoCo team websites and mail going
through it. It's not a particularly well-specced machine, but it
normally handles it fine. We're working on optimising things so it works
properly all of the time, rather than just most of it.

The bandwidth required by all of our users upgrading is beyond
comprehension. If you can donate the insanely large amount of bandwidth
required, by all means do so. Bandwidth requires money (and lots of it),
and Canonical doesn't have a money tree. Canonical (and indeed the
Ubuntu development community) also has no control over third-party
mirrors such as the Optus one which give users so much grief around release.

This problem never seems to amuse me.

The server always seems to get overloaded a little after each new release of
Ubuntu and then admins claim that they are working on the problem so that it
won't happen again.

I just wish the problem would be fixed once and for all instead of the same
problem arising with each new release as has been for some years now.

mekong has been having load issues lately, but we are working to resolve
them. I have had to alter DNS (among other things) to fix it, so it
should all be fine again within an hour. I'm keeping an eye on it, as
are admins from the LoCo teams that we share with.
