[Bug 1067876] [NEW] Missing Safely Remove Drive Option from Context-Menu

2012-10-17 Thread Lonnie Lee Best
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04, I could right-click on my usb-external-harddrive's
Unity-Task-Bar icon and select Safely Remove. Upon doing this, the
icon would disappear and I would proceed in unplugging my external hard
drive.

However, since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.10, this option is no longer
available in the context menus for external drives.

Instead, all I see is Unmount, and after clicking Unmount the icon
remains on the task-bar and no indication is given that would imply that
the unmount occurred successfully.

The intent of this report is to bring back the Safely Remove option
which (by making the icon disappear after selected) indicates that you
may now safely removal your USB external hard drive (by unplugging its
usb connector).

** Description changed:

Today (17.Oct 12) I updated on my Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS via update-manager to
xserver-xorg-video-intel Version: 2:2.17.0-1ubuntu4.2 from 4.1 and then the
following issues appeared:
  - The mouse cursor was flickering when draging a window or scrolling through
the main menu
  - The X crashed when switching into console mode or logging out (freezed with
grey background, Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work)
  - In Unity it automatically started 2d

I did a fresh install and removed xserver-xorg-video-intel from
updating-list.

[Bug 346386] Re: [MASTER] Update fails with invalid package files with Encountered a section with no Package: header

2012-10-17 Thread Brian Murray
Using apt version 0.8.16~exp12ubuntu10.5 from precise-proposed I
followed the test case in the bug description and observed the behavior
expected from the package in proposed and no longer received the merge
list error message.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: adept-updater

Pertinent data printed when attempting to run Updater as follows:

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
  information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include

  WORKAROUND:
Remove problematic files from /var/lib/apt/lists/ and rerun apt-get update.

In the event that one is connected to a network with a proxy server that
returns html pages (like a web page requesting you to login) and not
package list files. Those html files will get downloaded to
/var/lib/apt/lists/ and prevent someone from using a package manager

[Bug 1067875] Re: package fonts-nanum (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: corrupted filesystem tarfile - corrupted package archive

2012-10-17 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test. Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1035852] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad X201, Conexant CX20585, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2012-10-17 Thread justfortherec
This week the internal speakers of my x201 stopped working all of a
sudden. Headphones still work flawlessly. But I'm not sure if this is
the same bug because I definitely did not mute anything in Windows.

So if this is a general problem (regardless of having a dual boot setup,
which I do not have) this bug affects me, too.

Regards

[Bug 1067863]

2012-10-17 Thread Ubuntu Foundation's Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1067863/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1061073] Re: Desktop effects are slow and desktop corruption using mesa 9

2012-10-17 Thread Rich Sezov
Just so you know, I'm not trying to take away from the real (and hard)
work you're doing on this issue: it is a bug, plain and simple, and it
needs to be fixed. I'm just offering a workaround for those of us who
may have installed the beta on our main machines, since we were so close
to the release. :-)

My effects are still slow, but the glitchy windows aren't preventing me
from getting work done anymore. Very much looking forward to the proper
resolution of this issue, and I wish I knew more about KDE development
so that I could be of help. Thanks for your efforts!

[Bug 1061073] Re: Desktop effects are slow and desktop corruption using mesa 9

2012-10-17 Thread Stefan Freyr
Ok so I managed to get through my dependency woes. I figured out that
there are two packages that are architecture agnostic and those .deb
files are only on the i386 files so I got the kde-workspace and kde-
workspace-data .deb files from there and all is now good.

So now I have kde-workspace 4.9.0 and mesa 9.0 installed and I can
verify that the desktop effects are still very slow. I haven't seen the
rendering artifacts (the white lines as in the screenshot attached to
this bug) however but those appear sporadically so I can't say for sure
that they're gone or whether they just haven't appeared for me.

I will take a look at downgrading mesa step by step next. Will report
back.

[Bug 1067886] [NEW] xwit cannot de-iconify window

2012-10-17 Thread Steve Atwell
Public bug reported:

The xwit command (from package xwit) provides a simple command-line
interface for de-iconifying and raising an X window. However, it
doesn't work for iconified windows in Unity. (It does work with other
window managers, even Unity 2D.) xwit simply calls XMapRaised(3) on the
specified window.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install the xwit package.
2) Open a terminal, and get its windowid with echo $WINDOWID. Record this
number.
3) Minimize the terminal window.
4) Open a second terminal window instance. Run xwit -id windowid

Expected behavior: The minimized terminal window should be de-iconified and
raised.
Actual behavior: Nothing happens in Unity. (But this does work in Unity 2D
and most others.)

This is on Ubuntu 12.04 with the following package versions:

unity 5.16.0-0ubuntu1
compiz 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.4
xwit 3.4-14

[Bug 1067885] [NEW] Wishlist: Add and Subtract Minutes to Time

2012-10-17 Thread Rosemary Hendley
Public bug reported:

Users may know what time they want to finish something and have an idea
of how long it will take. It would be nice to be able to do the
arithmetic in gcalctool to find out what time they should start. Users
may also want to do the opposite. They may know the start time and how
long it will take and would find it convenient to add them together to
find the finish time. For example, I wanted to finish an 80 minute task
at 12:15 and wanted to enter 12:15-80 in a calculator to find out what
time I should start.

[Bug 1065640] Re: bits/in.h does not include IP_UNICAST_IF from linux/in.h

2012-10-17 Thread Erich Hoover
You shouldn't need to undefine IP_UNICAST_IF, since it's not in bits/in.h it
shouldn't be defined at all (linux/in.h is not included, as it has conflicts
with bits/in.h). Alternatively, you can use configure to define the flag for
you, e.g.:
CFLAGS=-DIP_UNICAST_IF=50 ./configure

[Bug 1032187] Re: Major OpenGL performance degradation over time

2012-10-17 Thread Pushkin
I see very similar issue, but with Core i7 Sandy Bridge, Intel HD
Graphics 3000 built in, which makes me think - this is nothing to do
with NVidia, but rather with Compiz. The desktop effects like moving
between virtual desktops is buttery smooth and the suddenly it goes very
jerky and slow. It stays this way, until I go into CCSM and disable
unity plugin, then re-enable it back - it is buttery smooth again.

I think, this is related -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/888039

Some details about my setup: I'm using 2 displays of different sizes and
resolutions: 1920x1200 + 1600x900.

Title:
libpgplot-perl and pgplot5 fortran compiler mismatch?

Status in “libpgplot-perl” package in Ubuntu:
 New

Bug description:
 Hello there,

I develop the mcstas package (http://www.mcstas.org) that on Ubuntu
systems has dependencies for pgplot5 and libpgplot-perl.

When plotting using our mcplot and mcdisplay perl scripts, the
 following error occurs:

 /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpgplot.so.5:
 undefined symbol: XOpenDisplay

I have found that the bug is also a problem for the Horae package, see:
 http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.science.physics.ifeffit/979

I have found two different workarounds for the problem that could give
an indication of the cause of the problem:

 A) Install the pgplot5 package from http://debian-xray.iit.edu/ by following
these steps:
 - Add this apt-get line to your /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://debian-xray.iit.edu oneiric main contrib non-free
 - Run these commands in a terminal:
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get install -y --force-yes debian-xray-keyring
 sudo apt-get update
(The author of the 3rd party packages indicate that the problem could relate
to different versions of gfortran used for the builds)

 B) Rebuild the perl-pgplot package from CPAN sources:
 - Add a few build-dependencies to your system:
 sudo apt-get install gfortran libextutils-f77-perl libx11-dev
 - Get and install perl PGPLOT from CPAN by running these commands:
 wget
http://search.cpan.org/CPAN/authors/id/K/KG/KGB/PGPLOT-2.21.tar.gz
 tar xzvf PGPLOT-2.21.tar.gz
cd PGPLOT-2.21/ perl Makefile.PL make sudo make
install

 Other info:

 lsb_release -rd output:

fwiw, after the valgrind experiment I had to include another line item
to my workaround... normally removing .compiz and .cache/compiz and
restarting lightdm works. I added the compiz.desktop to keep it from
picking up the test script I was using.

#!/bin/sh
sudo service lightdm stop
rm -rf /home/joey/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/joey/.cache/.compiz*
rm -rf /home/joey/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/compiz.desktop

[Bug 873548] Re: Brother MFC 7440N printer is detected but will not print

2012-10-17 Thread P.Kvols
Correction. I installed all over on another PC running Ubuntu 12.04.
Here is what was needed to install the printer in my system:

Follow #11 above (except that I do not need to --force-architecture
since I user i86, not 64 bit)

Add the printer to /etc/hosts, in my case the printer has static address
192.168.11.10:

sudo gedit /etc/hosts
add a line under 127.0.0.1LOCALHOST
192.168.11.10MFC.7440N

Open the printer app, add a printer.

Expand the Network printer, wait some time, and select the MFC-7440N

Install, but when asked about manufacturer, select (O) Supply PPD
file...

Browser to /usr/share/cups/model, and select the file MFC7440.PPD

Print a test page,

Open printer properties, set the paper size (Letter is default, I use
A4), go through other settings, such as toner save, resolution (1200
DPI) ...

Works for me, and it's a great little printer, but this is a hassle!

I installed Mesa 9.0 20120903 from
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/quantal/+source/mesa/9.0~git20120903.e1673d20.is.git20120821.c1114c61-0ubuntu1
and I experience the same slowness and artifacts on that.

So I won't try the other git snapshots since the bug was clearly
introduced before 03.09.2012.

[Bug 1042758] Re: landscape handler needs to set RUN=1 in /etc/default/landscape-client

2012-10-17 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello Andreas, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into precise-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-
init/0.6.3-0ubuntu1.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please change the bug tag from
verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not, change the
tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing
will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

** Changed in: cloud-init (Ubuntu Precise)
Status: In Progress = Fix Committed

** Tags added: verification-needed
