[Bug 1837326] Re: platform eisa.0: EISA: Cannot allocate resource for mainboard

2021-08-19 Thread Gioele Barabucci
For reference: the kernel in RHEL8.4 does not have any of the
`CONFIG_EISA_*` options; Fedora 36 does not set them
(https://gitlab.com/cki-project/kernel-ark/-/blob/os-
build/redhat/configs/ark/generic/CONFIG_EISA).

In general `CONFIG_HAVE_EISA`/`CONFIG_EISA` and all related options
should be set to No. There is no chance that somebody with a EISA
motherbord (replaced by PCI in 1995) is running Ubuntu on that machine.

See: https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/EISA.html

[Bug 1851778] [NEW] Power-off button tries to close all open windows

2019-11-07 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

Since October or September 2019, whenever I press the poweroff button on
my laptop, in addition to receiving the usual "Would you like to...
Lock, Restart, Power off" dialog, all open applications ask me if I
really want to close them.

The attached photo shows an example of this behavior.

It looks like the power off keystroke is not captured by Unity (or what
other program is responsible for the showing the power off dialog) but
also broadcast to all applications.

[Bug 1788557] [NEW] USB3 port unavailable after suspend/resume (regression)

2018-08-23 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

The USB3 port of my Samsung Series 9 notebook (NP900X3D) does not work
after a suspend/resume cycle. The other USB2 ports work fine.

This problem has appeared between kernel 4.13.0-45-generic (works
flawlessly) and 4.15.0-24-generic (fails every time). IIUC there has
been a big refactoring of the power management code between these two
versions.

Trying to plug a USB stick into the USB3 port after a resume leads to
the following error being logged in dmesg:

[ 345.034905] usb usb2: root hub lost power or was reset
[ 345.034912] usb usb3: root hub lost power or was reset
[ 345.094619] xhci_hcd :03:00.0: Host took too long to start, waited
16000 microseconds.
[ 345.094643] xhci_hcd :03:00.0: PCI post-resume error -19!
[ 345.094646] xhci_hcd :03:00.0: HC died; cleaning up
[ 345.094651] xhci_hcd :03:00.0: HC died; cleaning up

After this error the USB3 port will not work until the system is
rebooted.

This error is shown only the first time when a USB device is inserted
after the resume. In all subsequent tries no messagess will be logged to
dmesg.

[Bug 1702467] Re: software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Problem identified: an unrelated stray one-line `sitecustomize.py` in
$PYTHONPATH. Thank you for the hint.

This bug can be closed now, or, maybe, the importance lowered (the
indicator should cope better in the presence of warnings).

[Bug 1702467] Re: software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
apt-get, apt and aptitude work all just fine and produce no errors nor
warnings.

update-notifier/apt-check is, indeed, responsible for the error message.

gioele:~$ /usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check
Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback:
AttributeError: module 'sys' has no attribute 'setdefaultencoding'
0;0gioele:~$ echo $?
0

Please note the missing newline between the end of the output of apt-
check and the prompt.

gioele:~$ which python
/usr/bin/python
gioele:~$ readlink -f /usr/bin/python
/usr/bin/python2.7

Thank you Sebastien for the triaging.

[Bug 1702467] [NEW] software update indicator crashes and displays wrong error message

2017-07-05 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

On a fresh Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS install, the software update indicator
indicator crashes (probably during startup) and reports the a mangled
error.

It states

> for traceback: AttributeError: module 'sys' has no attribute
> 'setdefaultencoding' 0;0'.

Please note the "ror" instead of "Error" at the beginning of the
reported error message.

[Bug 1323586] Re: oneconf crashes if one apt list file is unreadable

2015-09-30 Thread Gioele Barabucci
I mean `umask 077`. With umask 077 the default file permissions are 600.

With umask 077 a file created by root via sudo will be unreadable for a
normal user.

[Bug 1323586] Re: oneconf crashes if one apt list file is unreadable

2015-09-30 Thread Gioele Barabucci
It may not be a bug in python-apt, but it is a bug nevertheless. If
unreadable files are not supported, the applications should ignore them
or complain about them, not crash and raise an apport dialog every hour.

Please note that it is very easy to generate files in `sources.list.d`
that are not readable by normal users. Just use `sudo apt-add-
repository` and a 077 umask.

[Bug 1473750] [NEW] lm-sensors 3.3.5 needs to be backported for AMD Kabini support

2015-07-12 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

As discussed in the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lm-
sensors/+bug/1406499 , the AMD Kabini processor is supported only by lm-
sensors version 3.3.5. Previous versions of lm-sensors are not able to
drive the system fan. This means that in systems with AMD Kabini and
Ubuntu 14.04 the fan is spinning continuously.

lm-sensors 3.3.5 has already been released for vivid and wily.

[Bug 1014555] Re: when remmina starts an rdp connection, the screen inside the window is moved up right

2015-04-22 Thread Gioele Barabucci
In the GH issue https://github.com/FreeRDP/Remmina/issues/69 the
authors of Remmina claim this bug has been fixed in Remmina version 1.x
(released in February 2014).

As a workaround, one can use the official PPA ppa:remmina-ppa-team
/remmina-next as described in their Wiki:

[Bug 1393794] Re: xul-ext-gdata-provider contains outdated non-working version of Provider for Google Calendar

2015-01-20 Thread Gioele Barabucci
The author of the extension claims that he has pushed the sources to two
repositories: on addons.mozilla.org and on comm-central:

«The source code is available on addons.mozilla.org and was recently
pushed in a slightly modified version to the comm-central repository. I
cannot post this code to the repositories that the redhat folks might
like, but I'm not keeping them from grabbing it directly.»

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/provider-for-google-
calendar/TXc-b-EcSU8/G7JEdUlUglAJ

The source at comm-central has, indeed, been last updated on 2015-01-16,
few days after the release of the XPI: http://hg.mozilla.org/comm-
central/file/f28ff368b740/calendar/providers/gdata

Is it possible to build this package from the source found at comm-
central?

[Bug 1394465] [NEW] Google calendar password not accepted

2014-11-19 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

In November 2014, Google updated its authentication scheme for Google
calendar to OAuth. The current `xul-ext-gdata-provider` (packaged as
version 31.2 in Ubuntu 14.04) does not support OAuth. The upstream-
upstream version 1.0.2 supports OAuth.

To solve this problem the page `xul-ext-gdata-provider` should be
updated to ship at least version 1.0.2.

[Bug 1327159] Re: Some applications use the wrong audio output when using a USB headset

If I use the indicator-sound-switcher to switch to the USB headset, all
the audio will be properly redirected, but only until the screensaver
kicks in and I need to insert my password again.

Once I am back into my session, the indicator will say that my output
device is the USB headset, but the audio from applications like Flash
will be directed to the internal loudspeaker.

[Bug 1335740] [NEW] K3b/mkisofs fails with Joliet directory tree should start at 286 but starts at 283.

2014-06-30 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

K3b is unable to write some Mixed CD projects. I keep getting the
following error:

mkisofs
---

=== last message repeated 2 times. ===
/usr/bin/genisoimage: Warning: -C specified without -M: old session data

will not be merged.
/usr/bin/genisoimage: Implementation botch: Joliet directory tree should
start at 286 but starts at 283.

The error appears when the data track is about to be written. The audio
track is written fine. I can reproduce this error (I produced various
faulty CDs trying to understand what the problem was).

I tried performing a simulation before burning the CD and the simulation
completes without any problem.

Why is nautilus detecting the OFT as a LibreOffice document?

file(1) can correctly detect it as TrueType font data

$ file sans.otf
sans.otf: TrueType font data
$ file -i sans.otf
sans.otf: application/x-font-ttf; charset=binary

[Bug 1328430] [NEW] Other windows of the same app not shown if one is set to Always on top

2014-06-10 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

I have multiple terminal windows open. I can see a preview of all of
them if I click on the Terminal icon in the launcher.

If I set one of these windows to Always on top, then clicking on the
icon does not show all the previews anymore. Removing the Always on
top flag fixes this problem.

[Bug 1327159] [NEW] Some applications use the wrong audio output when using a USB headset

2014-06-06 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

I used the default sound properties display of Ubuntu 14.04 to set the
default output from the internal loudspeaker included in my computer (a
nice touch found on a Levono tower PC) to an USB headset.

Most of the applications correctly output their sound to the USB
headset, Rhythmbox for example.

There, however, are some applications that still send their sound to the
internal loudspeaker, for example the Tomate application [1] and the
flash plugin (inside Firefox).

[Bug 842647] Re: [git] file blocks duplicated at the end of the file

2014-06-03 Thread Gioele Barabucci
It looks like the same problem is present also in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
After stating a 190k files with `find` and `grep`, the kernel log is
full of

ecryptfs_decrypt_page: Error attempting to read lower page; rc = [-4]
ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page; rc = [-4]

Couldn't these printk from ecryptfs be augmented with some additional
information? At least to make sure that we are all hitting the same bug.

[Bug 1320282] Re: [Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p] reboots instead of shutting down

2014-05-26 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Dear Christopher M. Penalver, if a normal user like me can be asked to
perform a git bisection on a kernel, I suppose it is reasonable to ask
you to have a look at the linked bugzilla kernel report, read inside it
the SHA of the commit that has landed into the stable branch and that
solved this problem and finally track it up to the equivalent commit in
the mainline kernel.

[Bug 1321162] [NEW] Workrave doesn't show its Unity indicator

2014-05-20 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

The current version of the Ubuntu 14.04 LTS `workrave` package

shown.

[Bug 1320282] Re: [Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p] reboots instead of shutting down

2014-05-19 Thread Gioele Barabucci
This problem seems resolved using the suggested v3.15-rc5-utopic kernel.

$ uname -a
Linux federwolke 3.15.0-031500rc5-generic #201405091635 SMP Fri May 9
20:36:31 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Will the fix be backported to Ubuntu Trusty 14.04 LTS?

[Bug 1320282] Re: [Lenovo ThinkCentre M93p] reboots instead of shutting down

2014-05-19 Thread Gioele Barabucci
I do not have the time to do a full git bisect, but I tried all the
versions available from the mainline archive and I achieved some
success.

The last kernel version that shows this error is v3.14.2-utopic
(3.14.2-031402.201404262053). The first version without this problem is
v3.14.3-utopic (3.14.3-031403.201405061153).

The fix has thus been added between v3.14.2 and v3.14.3.

[Bug 442574] Re: mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed

2013-12-23 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Here is a use case that I hope can change the status of this report from
Opinion to New/Confirmed.

The fglrx package is needed if one wants to use the AMD CodeXL tool, an
OpenGL/OpenCL development tool from AMD. The CodeXL tool can work with
offline devices, i.e. without having an AMD GPU in the computer from
where it is run, but it requires the Catalyst/fglrx libraries to be
installed anyway.

Here is the problem: when CodeXL sees that the host is using an AMD
libGL.so library, it disables its offline features and tries to use
the available AMD GPU. But there are no available AMD GPUs, so it fails.

To use CodeXL one has to

1. start on a system where fglrx is not installed
2. install fglrx (this install libGL.so and many other libraries)
3. use CodeXL (the fglrx's libGL.so is present but not loaded, so CodeXL does
not know it is available and offline devices can be used)
4. remove fglrx

If one reboots without removing the fglrx package, then its libGL will
be loaded and CodeXL will stop to work.

This problem would be solved if it were possible to install fglrx
without activating its version of libGL.so.

[Bug 1213719] Re: [Samsung NP900X3D-A03IT] Powertop shows 100% Device Usage for audio codecs

2013-10-26 Thread Gioele Barabucci
I have a similar tunable setting and all the results I reported are with
that setting set to Good (from the default Bad).

That setting _should_ be on by default and _should_ resolve the 100%
usage problem. This bug report is about the fact that setting it on does
not resolve the issue.
