Also noticing that with Mir 0.26 I'm seeing large CPU usage by XMir
applications. Firefox on the start page (no animations or anything) is
seeing U8 using 50% CPU and Xmir 20% CPU. It could be these are the same
issue?

The indicators get an action that is fired when the indicator is opened
and closed on the root of the menu structure if requested. The sound
indicator does suppress notifications when the menu is open. Easy way
to check is to use the scroll wheel on the sound indicator, and then
open the menu and use the scroll menu on the slider (unity7).

Public bug reported:

Using Unity8 with Xenial+Overlay.

When I click on the text field in the app drawer I can use the keyboard

[Bug 1637917] Re: rosegarden 16.06 plays only first note, locks up PC when trying to use HR timer

2016-12-13 Thread Ted Felix
Upstream dev here.

There is a bug in the ALSA drivers that causes the playback problem you
describe. Kernel bug 177571 is the one:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=177571. That patch needs to
be added to Ubuntu's kernel to fix this.

The relevant patch in the linux kernel 4.8.y tree:

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/commit/?h=linux-4.8.y=0f574c90d7476474d6b4e1d032e75cdf6c722fb3

Upstream bug report: https://sourceforge.net/p/rosegarden/bugs/1537/

Unrelated: The HR Timer issue is a long-standing mystery that upstream
doesn't have time to address right now. Use the PCM timers instead if
you need better resolution than the system timer.

If there are no threads, then there isn't any locking needed on the
data structure, so it's probably something else that is causing your
problem. But you're probably out of mailing list territory at this
point, need a way to recreate and to find someone who has time to look
through the code.

[Bug 1647409] Re: Allow multiple trust prompts to be started per process

This also effects URL dispatcher prompts. For instance we have a Bad URL
prompt that shows up when someone uses an incorrect URL. It is quite
possible for someone to have a bad URL in one app and use another one at
the same time.

[Bug 1639051] Re: gnome3 has black screen after upgrade: 304.131-0ubuntu0.14.04.2, 304.132-0ubuntu0.14.04.2

2016-11-10 Thread Ted
Hi,

Have a similar issue here, I can no longer use my Blender, FreeCAD and OpenSCAD.
I do not get the black screen but Blender and FreeCAD crash and OpenSCAD will
not display the model.
Running Lubuntu 16.04 with the Nvidia Driver 304.132

Perhaps something about my configuration will be helpful with the
troubleshooting.

Have a second Lubuntu 16.04 computer that is not using the Nvidia Driver
and Blender runs fine on it.

[Bug 1639952] Re: When running in unity8 desktop snap, icons aren't found

2016-11-09 Thread Ted Gould
So there are a few interesting things going on here. Some things to keep
in mind. The FD.o spec doesn't allow for expansion of variables in the
Icon entry. We can't let snaps reference items outside of their own snap
directory or it is a security issue (someone can mimic another app,
which they could do, but it's worse if they do it locally)

To that end UAL resolves absolute paths in the Icon field as being
relative to the snap directory. In essence that means "/foo/bar.png"
resolves to (effectively, not literally) "${SNAP}/foo/bar.png". It also
means that we resolve "foo/bar.png" to (effectively)
"${SNAP}/foo/bar.png". Which is a form that makes more sense.

The problem is that snapd was broken on Unity7 so everyone encoded their
Icon paths like they were running on a Ubuntu based Deb system, they put
in paths that would only work there (for instance, snapd on other Linux
distros uses different paths) because Unity7 didn't do this
substitution. Now snapd is making illegal desktop files to compensate
and work around that.

The plan to solve this problem is that snapcraft will be setting the
icons and the paths for applications so that they are properly relative
to the snap directory. This will allow application developers to have
predictable results on a variety of distros and icons to work properly
on Unity8. Unfortunately we have a set of apps that are broken today.

[Bug 1626445] Re: lttng shouldn't be enabled out of the box/ incompatible with snappy confinement

2016-10-06 Thread Ted Gould
It does link to it, but that shouldn't be an issue as it should detect
that it's not enabled and/or running and become a no-op. We want to
leave it in so that it can be enabled easily.

What is your concern, just the AppArmor log message?

[Bug 1629863] Re: snap apps require hardcode --desktop-file-hint to launch

2016-10-04 Thread Ted Gould
So we think this is qtmir resolving the apparmor label incorrectly.
Apparmor labels are now "snap.$(pkg).$(app)" instead of "$(pkg)_$(app)"
so it isn't getting the AppID of the application correctly.

Ubuntu Calendar App doesn't have a desktop file that matches the app
name in the YAML file. The desktop file is:

com.ubuntu.calendar_calendar.desktop

And the YAML has a app name of:

ubuntu-calendar-app

This is an invalid snap.

For the user hitting the cancel button the test is in the
authentication dialog tests:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-api-team/policykit-unity8/16.04/view
/head:/tests/authentication-test.cpp#L200
For the agent cancelling:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-api-team/policykit-unity8/16.04/view
/head:/tests/agent-test.cpp#L257
To ensure that we cancel on shutdown and free'ing of the internal
objects:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-api-team/policykit-unity8/16.04/view
/head:/tests/agent-test.cpp#L320
A cancel at the auth manager level (not really from outside, but more
checking internal logic):
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-api-team/policykit-unity8/16.04/view
/head:/tests/auth-manager-test.cpp#L203
I think that covers most of the pathways in question, please note if
there's others you think we should cover.

To be clear, URL Dispatcher hasn't changed except for rebuilds since
November 2015. It's not anything related to OTA13 or any of the last
several OTAs. If those apps worked in OTA12 but not 13, it wasn't URL
Dispatcher's fault.
Not saying this should get fixed and land, but acting like it broke
apps is disingenuous.

The helpers when UAL is included in a Snap aren't found because they're

[Bug 1623636] [NEW] Icons with full paths don't work

2016-09-14 Thread Ted Gould
Public bug reported:

If the icon entry is a full path name, like:

Icon=/usr/share/my-app/app-icon.png

And the app is installed in a Libertine container or UAL is in a Snap we
don't add the relative paths needed for those containers. It is always
resolved to the root of the host. We need a way to add the container
path to those icon paths.

It works for me, but that is probably because I have ubuntu-webbrowser
installed, and that is what is opened. But it seems that, from the U8
greeter, you'd only be sending application:// and appid:// URLs though,
right? Those are both built in.

[Bug 1612255] Re: url-dispatcher should use xdg-open as a fallback if not in Touch

URL dispatcher does open application on a U7 session already. So I'm not
sure what the issue would be there. I don't think we need xdg-open for
that. Which cases are you seeing it not work?

We put applications in cgroups to ensure that their PIDs don't escape
and we can kill them all when the app shuts down. The Upstart cgroup

If you right click on a header bar, that event is sent to the window
under the current window. The same for scrolling with a mouse wheel.

Thinking about this more, we can get the status code that is returned by

QML cache" we could do that.

[Bug 1584849] [NEW] Creating a log on a non-default thread causes it to hang

2016-05-23 Thread Ted Gould
Public bug reported:

When creating a Log object it creates a mainloop to wait on the proxy
object. It unfortunately does this with NULL has its context which means
it uses the main thread's context instead of the thread it is running
on. This causes a hang as no one gets events then.

[Bug 1579799] Re: Need API to allow shell to choose custom OOM killer scores

2016-05-18 Thread Ted Gould
Spent a bit of time going back and forth on this with tvoss. We don't
want to have a ton of application states, that'll make insanity, but it
does make sense for qtmir to drive policy for applications. We don't
know completely what that policy is today.

Long story short, the plan is to provide an API that is an enum with
known values that can be overridden (it's base type will be int). In
this way qtmir can experiment and then we can start to collect the
values as we find them to be useful.

I'm going to go ahead and mark this as a duplicate of bug 1579799, what
I think is important is mentioned there; we need to enumerate the states
that we want applications in. I don't think putting magic numbers in the

[Bug 1583209] Re: OOM killer score calculations should be improved

2016-05-18 Thread Ted Gould
Agree that this would be a good feature, along with others, if we were
to write our own OOM killer algorithm. For reference, here is the code
in the kernel:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/mm/oom_kill.c#n155
(I think we're also using the lowmemory driver from Android, but it's roughly
the same with earlier penalties)

I think it should take into account LRU, but then also the processes in
the cgroup as for us we know that a cgroup represents an application.
Killing one process in an application is kinda silly. There has be some
discussion of doing this in userspace at the low memory levels which we
could definitely do, then let the kernel be stupid and quick in
emergencies, but that currently isn't on the list of things that UAL
does (and I think it should be a different project) so marking invalid
for UAL.

[Bug 1580916] Re: LIstitem dividers not shown for new items.

I think that my behavior is slightly different, but perhaps the same
bug. I have an infinite scrolling list, but connects to a webservice

[Bug 1579837] Re: Issue after wizard with policykit

2016-05-10 Thread Ted Gould
So I think what we're gonna do is use this bug for tracking the fixes
and landings for the touch images. This will be for OTA12, OTA11 will
not see the PK agent on it, we're just going to keep these bugs swept
under the rug like they were in OTA10.

At the root of it all the issue seems to be bug 1512002 where accounts
service was being too strict and we don't have a full session on the
phone. By applying the patch in that bug we remove the need for USS to
have a temporary PK agent and we remove the random prompts that are in
bug 1580086.

For this bug:

policykit-unity8 task: Fix the crash that was happening on timeout.
ubuntu-system-settings: Remove the PK agent code.
accountservice: Backport the bug 1512002 patch to vivid overlay

[Bug 1579799] Re: Need API to allow shell to choose custom OOM killer scores

2016-05-09 Thread Ted Gould
Today UAL has basically three states for applications, on, off and
paused. There are then OOM scores associated with those states. And it
seems that this is requesting more states. But I'm not sure I
understand. For instance, for X11 apps they're never paused, so their
OOM score stays the same as the focused app, do we need a state where
the focused app is killed before an X11 application? I also don't
believe that applications that have a trusted overlay are paused, so I'm
not sure how the scoring would work there either.

So what are the states that you see applications being in, and what
would their scores be relative to one another?

[Bug 1578331] Re: Support additional parameters for the command-line tool

2016-05-04 Thread Ted Gould
To support the use-case of developers who want to run utilities we have
ubuntu-app-test which will take a command line argument and run it. We
don't want to support that in the main tools as we want to run
"applications" which are defined by the meatadata in their package. So
if devs are installing a package, they should adjust their packaging to
have the command line arguments.
