Public bug reported:

The default version of the DejaVu fonts included in Ubuntu 6.06.x
renders quite ugly most of the cyrillyc and greek characters (especially
the bold variants are affected). When replacing the all *.ttf files with
the newer version of the font (currently 2.9) the appearance of the

[Bug 56679] Re: provide a method to use a specified MAC-address as the installation device

2006-08-17 Thread Timo Aaltonen
so, now it is possible to preseed netcfg/choose_interface, but it's
pretty useless since it is impossible to know which device gets which
interface.. It should be possible to preseed netcfg/choose_mac or
similar, and netcfg would then check which device has that MAC-address
and use it.

Hi Micah,
Do you vet every bug report?
As you have so correctly indicated this is all because Iam trying to use
UTF8 in terminals. I thought it was supposed to be reliable now. Clearly
not.

Both these bugs I've reported, I searched for in the database first. Any

[Bug 35112] Re: MP3 track times are incorrect

2006-08-17 Thread James Stansell
I'm seeing this bug with 6.06.1 LTS. Track times are incorrect in
Rhythmbox, Serpentine and Cowbell. The first 2 showed exactly the same
"way off" duration, but Cowbell was only a little off.

Track times for Banshee, VLC, Totem and Nautilus properties seem fine.

(The command I used was audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame
name=enc vbr=4 vbr-quality=2 ! xingmux ! id3v2mux)

So I'd say it worked but Rhythmbox, Serpentine and Cowbell aren't using
the xing headers correctly.

[Bug 56775] coreutils manpages refer to themselves.

2006-08-17 Thread Adam Buchbinder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: coreutils

I am using coreutils 5.93-5ubuntu4 on Dapper.

The "SEE ALSO" section of the manpage for split says that for the full
info page, "info split" should be executed. However, this just leads
back to the manpage (viewed with info, this time). The correct command
is "info coreutils split".

The same issue exists in the manpages for csplit, cat and presumably the

[Bug 56769] Dapper 64-bit cannot mount USB flash drive in r/w mode

2006-08-17 Thread Apostata
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.15

Before I begin, I have found three other bug reports which may be
related (in which case, you may wish to group these):

3) https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.15/+bug/50665

I cannot properly mount a SanDisk 256Mb USB2.0 flash drive. It mounted
perfectly in Dapper 6.06 32-bit (and prior versions), but after spending
two days on the problem, it seems it must be a failure of some sort at
the kernel level.

More information on these threads (other users, my own troubleshooting,
etc...):

Ubuntu Forum: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=192957

Just Linux Forum:

Essentially, the system cannot mount the USB flash drive while providing
writing privileges to either user or root. Furthermore, the system seems
to be hopping USB ID's with every reboot - the same port with the same
USB drive shows up as sda1, sdb1, sdc1, and (this evening) sdd1. I can
attest that the USB drive itself is fine and works with other systems
(it's also vfat and not ntfs).

[Bug 8980] Re: hostname -f does not return a proper FQDN

2006-08-17 Thread Scott KItterman
I think I understand this better now... I built a new server today and
running the same script I get:

Python 2.4.3 (#2, Apr 27 2006, 14:43:58)
[GCC 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5)] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import socket
>>> print socket.getfqdn()
mailout02.controlledmail.com

or to get back to the original report:

$ hostname -f
mailout02.controlledmail.com

As you can see, it works just fine. The difference (this is the first
time out of 4 machines, all Dapper fresh installs all using the text
mode installer) I believe is that this time I had the reverse DNS PTR
record set in advance. When setting up networking the installer offered
mailout02 as the hostname and then clearly picked up the rest of the
FQDN from the IP address' PTR record.

It seems to me now that the error is to only ask for the machine's name
and not the domain name if it can't be picked up from a PTR record.

ok so the "generic" totem plugin has an "open in movie player" option,
but its not there via the windows media player interface, so that's a
discrepancy b/w the different plugins.

On the flip side, I still think that certain items should be readily
available from the plugin directly (i.e. full screen, save if that's
possible, but totem doesn't support that in normal mode)

In my case, a empty cd icon is placed on the desktop but the nautilus cd

Is this the same behavior or another problem?

[Bug 56125] Re: doesnt look like a cow

2006-08-17 Thread James Henstridge
We currently don't preserve whitespace after the beginning of the line,
which is the cause of the problem here.

We probably should be replacing runs of whitespace (both leading
whitespace and embedded whitespace) with the pattern "     ...
" such that the run ends with a normal whitespace (so that if the
line gets wrapped, we don't have a space at the beginning of the next
line).

[Bug 48556] Re: ACPI-0517: ****Error Method parse/execudion failed

2006-08-17 Thread Chris Thompson
DSDT file for ASUS Z96J with factory BIOS. This should be the same as
the ASUS S96J as they are identical models. This is not the same as the
original reporter's machine but matches two others (including mine) in
this bug report.

To generate this file, I had to boot into a Kubuntu liveCD. Obviously,
my laptop will not boot with the installed version of Kubuntu unless I
specify ACPI=OFF, in which case I can't grab the DSDT info.

PLEASE IGNORE my addition of linux-restricted modules to the 'affects'
list, that was accidental.

[Bug 56765] suspend2ram doesn't resume

2006-08-17 Thread Rui Matos
Public bug reported:

With kernel

linux-image-2.6.17-6-686 2.6.17-6.18

suspend2ram (as selected from the gnome-power-manager applet) goes into
suspend state (led blinks as it should) but when awaken it gets stuck
without ever printing anything to the LCD. This did work with dapper.
I'll attach dmesg and lspci output shortly.

hibernation seems to work ok except when the new vesafb based usplash is
working (i.e. without 'splash quiet') but thats another bug. Anyway even
without 'splash' and 'quiet' suspend does not come back.

[Bug 52874] Re: fast user switching with ldap and autofs = bad

2006-08-17 Thread Niall Sheridan
Ping?
This is actually a serious problem. I really don't like it when a lot of
machines try to mount, read and access several thousand home directories
whenever their users unlock their screensavers, especially when the network in
question is pretty large and distributed. This places unnecessary load on my
ldap servers, my file servers and on the desktop machine itself. Sucking all
user details using a for loop and getpwent() is BAD.

In response to the original comment: Gnome don't enable fast user switching in
gnome-screensaver by default, Ubuntu do. Turning off fast user switching
involves modifying a gconf schema *before* the user first logs in, otherwise
the settings get copied as-is to their gconf settings, making this problem
somewhat harder to rectify.
In fact some way of disabling fast-user-switching completely regardless of the
users config setting would be useful.

I can confirm on:

http://acpi.sourceforge.net/dsdt/view.php

That a lot of ASUS motherboards have a DSDT (ACPI) bug, dealing with
interpreter problems.

So the bug is mainly that the hardware is broken.

Some of these motherboards have fixed DSDT's at the above URL. Others
can be fixed (or use similar fixed DSDT's from similar ASUS

[Bug 56762] Bluetooth causes random freezes

2006-08-17 Thread Chris Thompson
Public bug reported:

I have an ASUS Z96J laptop (this is basically the same as an S96J).
When laptop is booted with the bluetooth module loaded, I randomly get
freezes. Looking at syslog, this is caused by the Intel 3945 driver
needing to be reset on a regular basis.

If I blacklist the bluetooth module by editing /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and
adding:
blacklist bluetooth
to the end of it, the problem goes away. Now I just get a number of entries in
my syslog complaining, "WARNING: Not loading blacklisted module bluetooth".

I was also getting a lot of "ata2 is slow to respond, please be patient"
which seem to have stopped.

Note that I have to boot with acpi=off in order for my root file system
to be found. This may be part of the problem.

[Bug 56760] Gnome-screensaver ignores joypad input

2006-08-17 Thread Chris Lord
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

gnome-screensaver often comes on when I'm playing a game full screen
with the joypad. This can be rather annoying as the screen slowly fades
and you wonder what the heck's going on, then you realise and rush for
your wireless mouse that's since gone to sleep, wake it back up and
frantically move it around, all the while you're losing at whatever game
you're playing...

I suggest that gnome-screensaver should either listen to /dev/input/js*
or that it check if a window's full-screen and not turn on in those
cases... Or that zsnes and xmame are modified to turn off the
screensaver :)

Freezing also works if I skip to the text file or if I open a folder that only
contains a single text file and no mp3s at all.
I'm not sure I did it right but anyway, here is what I did:

First I ran >gdb --pid=pid of totem
A lot of lines popped up, far too long to quote them all
so here is what they looked like:

>Loaded symbols for /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvolume.so
>Reading symbols from /usr/lib/libgstcontroller-0.10.so.0...
>(no debugging symbols found)...done.
>Loaded symbols for /usr/lib/libgstcontroller-0.10.so.0
>0xe410 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
>(gdb) continue
>Continuing.

Then I skipped forward to the textfile:
>[Thread -1288623184 (LWP 6428) exited]
>[Thread -1271837776 (LWP 6426) exited]
>[Thread -1263445072 (LWP 6425) exited]

I pressed ctrl-c:

>Program received signal SIGINT, Interrupt.

After this I closed totem and now things start getting weird:

>(gdb) q
>The program is running. Quit anyway (and detach it)? (y or n) n
>Not confirmed.

Thought gdb might need some time to know I killed totem...
waited for several seconds:

>(gdb) q
>The program is running. Quit anyway (and detach it)? (y or n) y
>Quitting: Can't detach LWP 6417: No such process

[Bug 56755] Re: sudo password not masked when connecting with ssh

2006-08-17 Thread Simon Law
I don't think this is a bug in sudo.

This is because you're not giving sudo a terminal to ask the password
on. You need to use "ssh -t", which will provide it with a proper virtual
terminal.

Thanks.

[Bug 56755] sudo password not masked when connecting with ssh

2006-08-17 Thread Simon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sudo

When using keys to connect via ssh to a server, and issuing the command
'ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] sudo somecommand', the password prompt which
appears to ask for the sudo password displays the password on the
screen, rather than hiding it. This puts your password at risk of being
compromised by anyone who happens to be looking over your shoulder.

[Bug 56752] Dictionary pops up a dialog if a word isn't found in the dictionary

2006-08-17 Thread acon
Public bug reported:

When looking up a word that doesn't exist in the dictionary that is
found under Applications/Accessories/Dictionary a dialog is opened. The
expected behavior is that there shouldn't be a dialog, since useless
dialogs are evil. Instead you could display the information in the area
that shows word definitions.

[Bug 56293] Re: Synaptic doesn't play nicely with proxy-auth

2006-08-17 Thread Roland Kruse
I agree with this, I am a quite uncomfortable with the security aspects
of storing the proxy credentials in plain text in a file. Particularly
in a corporate setting, which is where this is most likely to be a
problem.

Anyway, this seems to have been addressed already. I searched a bit more
and found Bug #48332 and Bug #48329, the latter says the same I did
above in a more concise manner, and has been reported upstream to gnome.
