[Bug 163669] Re: Unable to watch a DVD. Message: an error happened, no resource access

2008-08-06 Thread Michael Nagel
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively" [WWW]
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at [WWW]
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 255362] [NEW] nautilus hangs always, now after a failed attempt to setup a VM in QEMULATOR

2008-08-06 Thread Fastener
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Running Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron

Tried to install WIN XP sp2 as a VM using QEMULATOR. During attempt to
RUN that VM, terminal opened and stopped at FATAL etc. Terminal hung,
wouldn't accept any input from keyboard, & wouldn't close even using
Force Quit, then KILL.

Cold Restart. Launched Places, HOME FOLDER - Nautilus hung again.
Desktop icons disappear during & after screen flash when FORCE QUIT.
Same with KILL from System Monitor.

After either FORCE QUIT or KILL, then Nautilus window returns to the
desktop. Still hung, and same as above,

Cold started in ?repair? mode - it reported problems, but I couldn't
scroll up the screen to see those details. Advice given at visible part
of text: something about cannot repair etc . . . run apt-get update . .
. packages automatically installed that are no longer needed, run 'apt-
get autoremove' . . . then it listed about 10 program names.

Then I tried to uninstall nautilus from the ADD/REMOVE utility: It did
not list Nautilus - it did list some add-ons. I ADDED those and cold
start, again. Same problem sequence with Nautilus.

Nautilus does work in only one condition. I have a 'folder' on my
desktop - when I open that folder all appears to be normal - Except when
I click to any other listed directory ('Folder'), then the same hang
sequence happens. Normal functions including open files, close files,
exit Nautilus - BUT IF I CLICK ANY OF THE LISTED FOLDERS, then the same
sequence of problem is mine to behold!

I'd think I need to reinstall Nautilus? But am not sure how.

The entire problem sequence looks so very much a like WINDOWS hang, and
persistance instance, and desktop icons disappearing. Only way out is to
cold restart, and do NOT use Places etc to browse my files. Very Sad for
me - I need Windows ONLY to run my MAGICJACK Phones and CAD Programs
AUtoCAD & SolidWorks (QCAD sadly only saves files to .dxf).

Have not UNinstalled QEMULATOR, Qemu Llauncher, or QtEmu - although I've
used ONLY QEMULATOR. Only tried one install of WIN XP , and I did delete
its .iso image and its VM from within QEMULATOR. There are no othe VM
installed, etc.

Any other "file browser" program available to install would be fine for
me until this can be fixed.

Thank You!

[Bug 232005] Re: Firefox is already running, but is not responding...

2008-08-06 Thread jemtallon
I am experiencing this same behavior currently on fully updated (as of
this morning) Ubuntu 8.04 running Firefox
3.0.1+build1+nobinonly+0ubuntu0.8.04.3.

I'd guess 1 out of 10 times that I close Firefox at the end of the work
day it stays running in the background like this and the next morning
when I come in I have to kill it manually. It is rather frustrating but
manageable since I know how to kill it. Still, if it can't be properly
diagnosed and corrected, it would help to add a "force quit" button or
similar to the dialog telling users that Firefox is already running. At
least then newbies would have an option for remedying the issue without
googling for a solution and dropping into command line.

If there are some logs or something I could capture for you guys that
might help track the issue, please let me know what you need.

[Bug 197132] Re: Corewars should recommend nedit

Hi James.

Thanks for your help and feedback.
This is actually my very first contribution, so I am not yet fully familiar
with the whole system. I did read a lot about it, but it still isn't completely
natural.

I will make another patch, hoping to get it better.

Thanks.

[Bug 186264] Re: keyboard randomly goes dead; takes a logout to restore functionality.

2008-08-06 Thread Alex Magaz
I've added a new user to ensure a default configuration. Then, after
holding down the Shift key for 8 seconds, the PC speaker beeped and a
dialog appeared to confirm I wanted to enable slow keys. So, maybe our
problem comes from a previous default configuration.

Paulus, is your KDE configuration from a previous Ubuntu or Debian
version?

Unfortunately no as I've already completed the update. I have one other

[Bug 197132] Re: Corewars should recommend nedit

2008-08-06 Thread David Futcher
After looking into this package a bit more I have discovered that it has
been abandoned upstream since 2002, so a GTK2 port is unlikely to
happen. Also, the last change (except for a gtk1.2 rebuild in the Hardy
cycle) was back in 2002. Therefore it is very out of date (standards
version 3.5.6). Considering this, maybe it would be a better idea to
remove this package from the archives.

[Bug 252574] Re: Please backport fixes for ad-hoc networks

2008-08-06 Thread DaveAbrahams
I would have attached them had I known where to find them. I assumed
the person describing these patches was using some well-known Linux
hacker terminology to refer to them, and you-all would know what he
meant. I think to get the actual patches, we'll have to ask that person
(Dan Williams dcbw-AT-redhat.com). If I had to guess, the kernel
patches can be pulled from Linus' tree, and the other ones can be found
by searching the log comments of the respective projects. But that's
just a guess. I'll send Dan an email pointing him at this bug and
asking if he can be more specific.

[Bug 255376] [NEW] Brasero always crashes with X Window System error when I add a file to a data project

2008-08-06 Thread kbit
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

In brasero 0.7.1 on ubuntu hardy (all updates), this happens to me
*every* time I try it.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open brasero
2) Create a new Data Project
3a) Drag and drop any file or folder from the browser pane into the disk
preparation pane
or alternatively:
3b) Select any file or folder in the browser pane and click the "Add" button

Expected:
The file or folder gets added

Actual result:
brasero crashes.
I'll attach the console output of a crash after drag and drop and after
clicking "Add". (The only difference is a failed gtk assert, though.)

[Bug 255376] Re: Brasero always crashes with X Window System error when I add a file to a data project

2008-08-06 Thread kbit
By the way, I can add music files to a music CD project just fine.
Adding the same file to a data project crashes brasero like above.

IIRC, I was once able to add files to a project even in Hardy. The
current state (crash every single time, without exception) is the same
for quite some time, now, though. So I guess the bug was introduced with
one of the updates, possibly months ago.

[Bug 255373] [NEW] No .desktop file in visualboyadvance-gtk package.

2008-08-06 Thread Dennis Craven
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: visualboyadvance-gtk

This package should probably contain a .desktop file so that it is
included in the Games menu. Users install it and do not know how to run
it without knowing the "dpkg -L visualboyadvance-gtk" command. This is
found in Hardy.

Expected: Upon installation, the new app (the GUI frontend at least) appears in
the Games menu.
What Happened: Nothing appeared in the menu, and how to run the application was
not easily discoverable.

2008-08-06 Thread steven_shiau
Actually it's live-initramfs (http://packages.debian.org/live-initramfs) from
Debian live need this. I use live-initramfs to create a Ubuntu live, but when
this ubuntu live boots, the live-initramfs will use /lib/udev/cdrom_id to
detect the cdrom and map /dev/cdrom... something like that.
Thanks.

[Bug 255379] [NEW] DVD mastering protection

2008-08-06 Thread Zakhar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k9copy

Ubuntu 8.04.01
K9Copy in Ubuntu repository (standard repository, not the backport).
DVD : DaVinci Code - Rental rights included - France (Droits locatifs inclus
France)

This DVD shows, with the option "fast scan" :

Title 1 (Bold) : 6116 Mo
Title 1 (not bold) : Several Terabytes !
If you unfold Title 1 (not Bold) the sizes of chapters looks quite normal
sizes. I didn't check if their sum is around 6Go, but it should be

Titles 2 to 18 seem to be OK

Title 19 (bold) : Several Terabytes !

Title 20 (bold) : Several Terabytes !

Obviously, Title 19 and 20 are there to fool rippers.
So I deselected them for backup.

Anyway, even deselected, K9 reads them as they must me addressed in the "main
menu".
This could be understandable with the option "keep original menu", but the same
occurs when "keep original menu" is not selected.

And of course, there are read errors on these titles 19 and 20.
Fortunately, recovery from these error are fast.

Then K9 copies all titles.
When it comes to title 1, the information in size are different from Title 1
(bold) and Title 1 (not bold).
And there come read errors that would take hours to recover (so I stopped the
process)

I tried backup only title 1.
Here appears another error, K9 uses the size calculated under Title 1-not-bold
and wants to apply a compression factor of 8654 !!!
Of course I changed it to factor 1 (as I reserved enough space to do a full
backup).
But then come read errors again.

Last test I switched off "Fast Scan".
When you ask K9 to read the DVD, it then scans the 20 titles, but fails with
"read error" on title 19 and so nothing is displayed on the DVD structure
window and you cannot copy anything.

For information this mastering is really very tricky :
- It fails to rip under windows "rippers" such as : DVDDecypter, Magic
DVDripper, DVD Fab Platinum => too many read error.
- Under VLC Windows, if you play DVDsimple, there is a fake Columbia sequence
at position 0 sec, it lasts for 15sec and VLC stops.
If you play it regular DVD, title 1 chapter 1, it will start at offset 54 sec
with the "real" Columbia sequence, but then fail after a few chapters.
- VLC Ubuntu does not play this DVD at all : VLC closes directly with no error
message.

I managed to play it with Dell Media Direct (a small XP with some sort of
"Media Player")... so I've seen the rented movie now and these bugs in K9 are
not a problem if I cannot rip it, because now I don't need to rip it anymore ;-)
But I wanted to report that anyway.

Unfortunately it happens with the "Rental" version of the DVD (very
expensive if you want to buy it for test... unless you are able to rent
it, I rent mines at 1€ through the company where I work). I don't know
if the retail version has the same intricate mastering.

[Bug 255378] [NEW] USA Dvorak keyboard layout does not remap control keys

2008-08-06 Thread Tommy McGuire
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Ubuntu 8.04.1 (currently up to date)

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts > USA Dvorak

The control key mapping does not appear to be updated; i.e. after
selecting USA Dvorak, the "i" key types "c" correctly, but with the
Control key it inserts a tab (Ctrl-I) instead of a Ctrl-c.

Using "setxkbmap dvorak" from a terminal command line maps the keys
correctly. (Control + "i" generates Ctrl-C.)

I believe the problem is in the package gnome-control-center

[Bug 197132] Re: Corewars should recommend nedit

2008-08-06 Thread James Westby
Hi tisek,

You're change is almost there, but there's something I missed the first
time around.

Where you have put "Suggests" now it applies to the "Source" part of
the control file, however, it's not valid to have a suggests there, and
even if it was it probably wouldn't be what you wanted.

After the empty line is a "Binary" section, which correponds to the
package that is built and installed by users. This is where the "Suggests"
line needs to go, as that is the package that you want to declare
the relationship with nedit.

Thanks,

James

[Bug 144077] Re: Regression - "Desktop effects could not be enabled" on ATI Mobility Radeon

My problem was fixed with Gutsy final release live cd.

[Bug 248891] Re: [kde4 ppa] broken init script

2008-08-06 Thread Marius Groeger
I can confirm the issue on Hardy as well. In fact, given the line

  KDMRC=/usr/lib/kde4/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

as hinted by the OP and this:

  $ dpkg -L kdm-kde4 |grep kdmrc
  /usr/lib/kde4/share/doc/kde4/HTML/en/kdm/kdmrc-ref.docbook
  /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

seems to make it quite obvious that something's fishy. I don't know
whether the installation procedure is supposed to copy kdmrc around or
to create some fancy symlinks, but like that it won't work.

[Bug 255384] [NEW] Plasma sometimes shows widget manipulation bar when widgets are locked

2008-08-06 Thread Andre Somers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdelibs5

Plasma in KDE 4 has the ability to lock widgets. This should also
prevent the bar what makes moving possible and that contains buttons for
resizing, removing and configuring from showing. Sometimes, the bar does
appear when you move the mouse over the a widget. I have seen it most
often with the analog clock widget, but also on other widgets. I can not
reproduce it consistently.

** Affects: kde4libs (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 254581] Re: Ubuntu Server Print-server doesn't pull in all the printer modules and ppds

2008-08-06 Thread Jorge Castro
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW]
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in cups.

[Bug 249530] Re: Uses Invalid Application Header Application ID, makes unusable

2008-08-06 Thread Steve Beattie
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: emesene

This makes emesene unusable and will effect practically everybody (it
  appears)!

  Emesene discussion board: http://emesene.org/smf/index.php?topic=1357.0

  Symptoms:
  - "Invalid Application Header Application ID is either not defined in
database or blocked from access." message appears when performing some actions.
  - Buddy list does not sync.
  - When deleting ~/config/.emesne config folder no contacts/username/etc show
up.

The fix is sudo "sed -i.bak 's/09607671-1C32-421F-A6A6-CBFAA51AB5F4
  /CFE80F9D-180F-4399-82AB-413F33A1FA11/g'
  /usr/share/emesene/emesenelib/XmlTemplates.py".
+
+ TESTCASE
+ - remove ~/.config/emesene1.0/[msn usernname] if it exists
+ - start emesene and log in to an msn account
+ - buddy list should sync
+ - change nick (should not generate "invalid application header" message)

Re: [Bug 247867] Re: Please merge Torbutton 1.2.0~rc5-1 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2008-08-06 Thread Sveinung
I have made a try here. I also changed the changelog to be more
readable, reflect what was removed and to give you credit since your
name would not appear in the "Changed by" line.

Please note that I have never merged a package from Debian to Ubuntu
(and included old Ubuntu changes) before, so it might be a good idea
to check it more than usual. When that is said it appears to be
Lintian clean, I was able to build it under Intrepid and when I tested
it on check.torproject.net (in hardy) it worked.
