[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid (evdev?)
Aha! Pitti, your xev output is not the same as mdz's or slangasek's, since it shows it (correctly) mapped to XF86Standby, which was the case with my Dell as well. Slangasek says that removing ~/.Xmodmap (or creating a new user) helped make the keys start being recognized (although some still didn't function but for other reasons). mdz, if you create a new user account and configure the same laptop layout, do you have the same symptoms? -- Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid (evdev?) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267682 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 268891] Re: [PPA 0.9.12 regression], Wakeup from ALSA!, Underruns > rewinds
Over the network, i.e. with a remote PULSE_SERVER set, I get a lot of rewinds when a stream is playing. The frequency is high, in the 2-4 Hz range. Acoustically it sounds like about three fadeouts per second, as if someone would move a fader up and down all the time. I have Kernel 2.6.27-3 and PA 0.9.12. [Bug 269588] [NEW] kernel 2.6.27-3-generic does not detect hdd in /dev/by-uuid/... and dont boot

I am able to use and boot it with kernels prior to 2.6.24-19-generic, including 2.6.24-19 Starting with kernels 2.6.26 series of Ubuntu-Intrepid, i was never able to boot.. i still use my computer using old kernel 2.6.24-19 when i boot it with new kernel series, it prints out some kernel logs a few tens of lines, then at some point, it stops and drops to busybox shell by giving error like: "Cannot find boot device, make sure your rootdelay parameter is long enaugh or your boot device exists.. [Bug 269362] Re: LAGNO GAMES
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html). We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem. We have instructions on debugging some types of problems (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures). At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Also please note that marking a bug as "security" should only be done if the bug shows evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries or directly causes the loss of data/privacy. Thanks, and please feel free to report any other bugs you may find. ** Changed in: gnome-games (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Visibility changed to: Public ** This bug is no longer flagged as a security issue -- LAGNO GAMES https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269362 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 269586] [NEW] Sound trouble on certain HP laptop (in my case : dv7 1070)
Public bug reported: When my laptop (HP dv7 1070e) is playing a sound, either there is no sound, either it is a very poor quality (with a kind of repetition of a short clip on a time interval of a few seconds). The bug is independent from the speakers (for example, if I plug an headset, the trouble is still present) Searching on the web, I found a tip to correct this : adding pci=noacpi at the end of kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst Indeed, when acpi is disabled, the sound is played correctly. However, I think this is not a good way to fix that trouble, because then, a CPU core is missing. [Bug 267757] Re: Change package name to musescore
What is your rationale? You are the first person to complain of this. mscore is how the package is known to the developers, on Sourceforge, and in shorthand by users. It is a shorter word, and reasonably recognisable as a known contraction of "MuseScore". Why should I make such a drastic change just because you find the package "harder to find"? I am more willing, however, to change the musescore.org "Download" page to point users directly at the "mscore" package: I am unsure why this has not been so. -- Change package name to musescore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267757 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 253785] Re: Apps can't sync with Rockbox
As far as I understand Danny he is having the same problem I had: when an iPod is attached applications like Rhythmbox or Banshee show the device and display the tracks on the device as they are listed in the iPod's database. The applications access the files on the device through the iPod's database. When Rockbox is installed on the iPod all media files are just 'dumped' on the device and the iPod must then be treated as any old USB mass storage device with media files on it. (An iTunes/iPod database on the device is then not feasible anymore since it would require iTunes to keep it up to date, also this DB is of no use to Rockbox). For Banshee there is a solution: disable the iPod plugin and add an empty file called '.is_audio_player' in the root directory of the iPod. Banshee will then treat the iPod like a USB mass storage device, ignoring the iPod database and directly accesing the media files. Details for the Banshee solution are here: http://wiki.banshee- project.org/Guide/DAPs/MassStorageDevices -- Apps can't sync with Rockbox https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253785 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 203340] Re: Kubuntu Hardy - 2 Error windows after login and no icons on desktop
The situation is unchanged. But here are some more details: To get reproducible results I did a clean install on my machine, so I used the Kubuntu 8.04.1 desktop CD and I did an upgrade of all packages with the default repositories. Then I tested login and the error windows were there. Next I enabled the hardy-backports repository and upgraded to KDE 3.5.10. The problem was still there. The caption of the error windows reads "Fehler - KDesktop" which translates to "Error - KDesktop". The problem seems to be related to the wallpaper size (pixel not kB) and downscaling of the wallpaper to the screen size (together with the low speed of the machine). The default wallpaper has an original size 1920x1440 while my screen size is 1600x1200. If I select another wallpaper the problem is gone. The other wallpapers coming with Kubuntu have a size of 1600x1200 or smaller. Now if I take one of my own pictures and scale it to 1600x1200 there is also no problem even if the original file is about 1.3MB. However if I scale the picture to 1604x1203 the problem is back independent from the file size. -- Kubuntu Hardy - 2 Error windows after login and no icons on desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 268659] Re: external monitor (dvi) not recognized

Yes, 100% reproducible. AND it was my fault! Refer to the mangled "banshee.desktop" attachment. [Bug 268397] Re: blobwars license restrictions
I got a response from upstream and have attached an updated correspondence file. While I would recommend reading the correspondence, the only thing decisively determined is to see the following forum URL: http://www.happypenguin.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4725 I fully recommend reading the entire forum thread, but I'll quote some important parts with comments. Upstream author: "It's Stephen Sweeney of Parallel Realities here, the guys that brought you Project: Starfighter, Metal Blob Solid, Virus Killer, and Blob And Conquer." All four of these games are included in Debian/Ubuntu and contain non- free data. The problem is, therefore, much bigger than expected. Upstream author: "You do know that the GPL only applies to software, right? ie - the program code? [sic] ... I'm not going to say anything more on the subject of the GPL and licenses because this isn't what I started this thread to do (and I'm actually rather annoyed that you decided to hijack it to vent your spleen). All I'll say is that there are HUNDREDS of GPL'd games that include non-free assets, because the authors' opinion was that the GPL applied only to their code, as did I. " This brings up the question if there might be other non-free data besides just music and sounds, e.g. artwork/graphics, text, etc; in other words anything other than code. Upstream does not use a distributed version control system, which may explain their reluctance to make any game modifications (burn-out). Luckily: Upstream author: "Once Blob And Conquer is 'finished' (or rather, has hit v1.00) I'll likely be looking for maintainers for the other projects, since my time on them will be done. " Version 1.0 was released on August 17. This suggests that the development for Blob Wars might become more transparent (e.g. version control system for code development), letting the community "liberate" the game. Upstream author: "I found the sound effects by doing web searches for things like "pistol" and "punch" and "splat" and stuff like that." Which of course means they were not necessarily free in the sense of freedom. And there is no proof without a doubt that it isn't illegal to distribute the files. From what was said in the thread, it seems more serious in terms of legality. Another User: "For the "non-free" resources, since nobody yet gave much information about *what* resources actually are affected, and *what* permissions to use and/or distribute them, under *which* conditions, I'm pretty unsure. Basically, without written permission to distribute them freely, You and me and Stephen could be sued. Without written permission to use them, users could be sued." Same User: "@Stephen [upstream author]: I know that this posting looks very different from what I wrote the other day, but I wasn't aware of the fact that you collected some of the data files from random sources; instead, I thought that the only problem was that some of the files weren't "free enough" in the FSF/GNU way (for example, "free to use, distribute, but don't modify the shit"). But this problem *really* is different. Should you have a list of URLs from where you got the resources, that'd be *really* helpful; such a list would allow to check what's distributable and what must be replaced by other files." This really should make us think twice about just separating the package and moving the music and sounds to multiverse. Upstream author: "Okay. I've removed the binaries of Blob Wars : Metal Blob Solid, Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer, Project: Starfighter, and Virus Killer from my website. I've also updated Happy Penguin to list the games as non free." Upstream author: "I've also written to the package maintainers of Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, and Gentoo to let them know the packages are illegal." Upstream author: "An overreaction? No, because, as I am reminded constantly, Linux could be sued. Well, I've updated my website to now only carry tar balls and have added a note that the resources are Non Free, so should not be distributed with Linux or carried in any of their repositories." At least this explains the license notice terms. The most important point is a post quoting from an email by the upstream author. Upstream author: "So, to clarify, the source code, data sets and graphics are Free. The rest is unknown (but as far as I'm concerned, I'm just redistributing assets that were already available freely)." Since the upstream author is finished with development of the game, he is unlikely to cooperate with GNU/Linux distributions. That basically leaves it to us, and unfortunately the sources of the data in the game is not documented. A lot of uncertainty here, so I think the decision on what to do should be placed on person(s) with more experience (debian-legal?). ** Attachment added: "correspondence with upstream (updated)" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17566231/upstream-contact-updated.txt ** Attachment removed: "correspondence with upstream" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/1

Public bug reported: nvidia-glx-173 was installed on upgrading to intrepid. I do not use an nVidia graphics card, but can see the advantages of installing this package by default for those who do. [Bug 269568] [NEW] dpkg installs too easily some packages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: dpkg When the users install packages downloaded directly of Internet and don't use tools as apt-get or aptitude, they could crash their system too easily: if i do: dpkg -i X_package and the package isn't installable because the dependencies are broken, dpkg write in any case on the package database the entry of X_package. This behaviour causes a lot of problems if, for example, we want to update the system with 'aptitude safe-upgrade'. [Bug 269541] Re: gconfd-2 becomes orphane when parent process crashes
** Description changed: Binary package hint: gconf2 When using a thin client kind of way (Nomachine NX or LTSP), it stays running when the connection crashes for some reason or when terminating the session on the serverside. gnome-session gets killed correctly, but gconfd stays running. [Bug 269564] [NEW] Auto-detection of i915 fails with default or no xorg.conf
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Although Xorg loads and compiz functions - all functionality is as expected - the correct resolution, though apparently detected (see Xorg.0.log), is not and cannot be employed, either manually or automatically. The screen, ideally at 1280x800, is always displayed at 1024x768. I cannot test with an xorg.conf, as I have been unable to generate one that works: dpkg produces only a skeleton, and anything produced by displayconfig-gtk is rejected (though no sign of why is given in Xorg.?.log) and gives only the bulletproof-x fallback. I am unsure whether I should report any bug against displayconfig-gtk, as I am unsure also whether it is now obsolete, or still recommended, or whatever. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Auto-detection of i915 fails with default or no xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269564 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

What we should do for now is to go through the bugs filed against NM about not detected 3g devices and see if they would get fixed by this.
