[Bug 267682] Re: Hotkeys no longer working in Intrepid (evdev?)

2008-09-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
Aha! Pitti, your xev output is not the same as mdz's or slangasek's,
since it shows it (correctly) mapped to XF86Standby, which was the case
with my Dell as well.

Slangasek says that removing ~/.Xmodmap (or creating a new user) helped
make the keys start being recognized (although some still didn't
function but for other reasons).

mdz, if you create a new user account and configure the same laptop
layout, do you have the same symptoms?

[Bug 268891] Re: [PPA 0.9.12 regression], Wakeup from ALSA!, Underruns > rewinds

2008-09-12 Thread Tobias Wolf
Over the network, i.e. with a remote PULSE_SERVER set, I get a lot of
rewinds when a stream is playing. The frequency is high, in the 2-4 Hz
range. Acoustically it sounds like about three fadeouts per second, as
if someone would move a fader up and down all the time. I have Kernel
2.6.27-3 and PA 0.9.12. The log looks like this:

D: sink-input.c: Have to rewind 368 bytes on render memblockq.
I: module-alsa-sink.c: Underrun!
D: protocol-native.c: Requesting rewind due to end of underrun.

I’m unsure if the frequency somehow correlates with this:

I: module-alsa-sink.c: Using 1 fragments of size 65536 bytes, buffer time is
371.52ms

[Bug 269588] [NEW] kernel 2.6.27-3-generic does not detect hdd in /dev/by-uuid/... and dont boot

2008-09-12 Thread bvidinli_ehcp
Public bug reported:

I use a mini-itx system with motherboard Via EPIA-M 1G Mini-ITX Tv-Out.
I am able to use and boot it with kernels prior to 2.6.24-19-generic, including
2.6.24-19

Starting with kernels 2.6.26 series of Ubuntu-Intrepid, i was never able to
boot..
i still use my computer using old kernel 2.6.24-19

when i boot it with new kernel series,
it prints out some kernel logs a few tens of lines,
then at some point, it stops and drops to busybox shell by giving error like:
"Cannot find boot device, make sure your rootdelay parameter is long enaugh or
your boot device exists.. "

it looks for a device at /dev/disk/by-uuid,
but when i try a "ls /dev/disk" at busybox console, there is no such by-uuid
dir...
so, i think new kernels does not recognise the hdd...

hope this helps...

[Bug 269362] Re: LAGNO GAMES

2008-09-12 Thread Kees Cook
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
(http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html). We'd be
grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems
(http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures).

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Also please note that marking a bug as "security" should only be done if
the bug shows evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege
boundaries or directly causes the loss of data/privacy.

Thanks, and please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 269586] [NEW] Sound trouble on certain HP laptop (in my case : dv7 1070)

2008-09-12 Thread Alexandre Jacob
Public bug reported:

When my laptop (HP dv7 1070e) is playing a sound, either there is no sound,
either it is a very poor quality (with a kind of repetition of a short clip on
a time interval of a few seconds).
The bug is independent from the speakers (for example, if I plug an headset,
the trouble is still present)

Searching on the web, I found a tip to correct this : adding pci=noacpi at the
end of kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
Indeed, when acpi is disabled, the sound is played correctly.

However, I think this is not a good way to fix that trouble, because
then, a CPU core is missing.

I know I'm not in that case, other persons I know have exactly the same
problem with other HP laptop model (dv7 1035...)

Sorry for my approximative english.

2008-09-12 Thread komputes
It is now being displayed as:

0781:5406 SanDisk Corp. Cruzer Micro 1/4GB Flash Drive

Why is that? Is it that SanDisk is using the same USB ID for all their
Cruzer Micro Drives in this range? Currently, the name suggests 1/4GB
(one quarter gigabyte) meaning ~250MB. If there is absolutely no way to
specify depending on size I would recommend either omit the size all
together (Cruzer Micro Flash Drive) or fully write the range (Cruzer
Micro 1GB-4GB Flash Drive).

[Bug 269031] Re: No Support for NVRaid during Installation

2008-09-12 Thread Lord Christopher Miller
I tried on Intrepid AMD64 Alpha 6 Alternate CD two days ago. I'll try
again with a fresh download of the Intrepid alternate CD then.

When I tried through the live-cd (8.04 AMD64 standard install cd)
(manually installing dmraid) it exposed the NVRaid drives, but it became
extremely unstable and would not allow me to partition the RAID volume
properly.

I just looked up the OpenSuSE version of dmraid, and it's 1.0.0rc13, so
I'm unsure why SuSE can work and Ubuntu cannot.

[Bug 249193] Re: [regression] resolution detection fails with multiple displays connected

2008-09-12 Thread Andreas Schildbach
** Summary changed:

- wrong internal resolution selected when external monitor connected
+ [regression] resolution detection fails with multiple displays connected

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On a Dell X1 (i915GMS) and an externally connected Dell 2405fpw:

Since upgraded to intrepid, when I have the external display connected,
Ubuntu boots up with the wrong resolution for the internal display.
- Should be 1280 x 768, but is 1024 x 768 (according to xrandr).
+ Should be 1280 x 768, but is 1024 x 768 (according to xrandr). It's also
+ not the correct resolution for the external display, which would be 1920
+ x 1200.

If I unconnect the external display and reload X, I get the correct
  resolution.
+
+ This problem has been confirmed for several combinations of displays
+ (see comments). I wonder if there is any combination that works - maybe
+ resolutions have to be exactly the same.
+
+ However, this is a regression from Hardy, which has the resolutions
+ right on each of the tested combinations.

runs fine on VmWare.
tried "all_generic_ide, noapic, nolapic, irqpoll" kernel parameters - wont help.

[Bug 267757] Re: Change package name to musescore

2008-09-12 Thread Toby Smithe
What is your rationale? You are the first person to complain of this.
mscore is how the package is known to the developers, on Sourceforge,
and in shorthand by users. It is a shorter word, and reasonably
recognisable as a known contraction of "MuseScore". Why should I make
such a drastic change just because you find the package "harder to
find"?

I am more willing, however, to change the musescore.org "Download" page
to point users directly at the "mscore" package: I am unsure why this
has not been so.

[Bug 253785] Re: Apps can't sync with Rockbox

2008-09-12 Thread Johannes Mockenhaupt
As far as I understand Danny he is having the same problem I had: when
an iPod is attached applications like Rhythmbox or Banshee show the
device and display the tracks on the device as they are listed in the
iPod's database. The applications access the files on the device through
the iPod's database.

When Rockbox is installed on the iPod all media files are just 'dumped'
on the device and the iPod must then be treated as any old USB mass
storage device with media files on it. (An iTunes/iPod database on the
device is then not feasible anymore since it would require iTunes to
keep it up to date, also this DB is of no use to Rockbox).

For Banshee there is a solution: disable the iPod plugin and add an
empty file called '.is_audio_player' in the root directory of the iPod.
Banshee will then treat the iPod like a USB mass storage device,
ignoring the iPod database and directly accesing the media files.
Details for the Banshee solution are here: http://wiki.banshee-
project.org/Guide/DAPs/MassStorageDevices

[Bug 203340] Re: Kubuntu Hardy - 2 Error windows after login and no icons on desktop

2008-09-12 Thread Nils Kassube
The situation is unchanged. But here are some more details:

To get reproducible results I did a clean install on my machine, so I
used the Kubuntu 8.04.1 desktop CD and I did an upgrade of all packages
with the default repositories. Then I tested login and the error windows
were there.

Next I enabled the hardy-backports repository and upgraded to KDE 3.5.10.
The problem was still there.

The caption of the error windows reads "Fehler - KDesktop" which
translates to "Error - KDesktop".

The problem seems to be related to the wallpaper size (pixel not kB) and
downscaling of the wallpaper to the screen size (together with the low
speed of the machine). The default wallpaper has an original size
1920x1440 while my screen size is 1600x1200. If I select another
wallpaper the problem is gone. The other wallpapers coming with Kubuntu
have a size of 1600x1200 or smaller. Now if I take one of my own
pictures and scale it to 1600x1200 there is also no problem even if the
original file is about 1.3MB. However if I scale the picture to
1604x1203 the problem is back independent from the file size.

[Bug 268659] Re: external monitor (dvi) not recognized

2008-09-12 Thread Samuel Kerstein
I believe I found a solution of sorts to my problem by consulting
http://manual.sidux.com/en/hw-dev-mon-en.htm In short, after I log in I
can change the resolutions on my laptop monitor and external monitor via
xrandr. However, how do I avoid having to do this manually every time I
use an external monitor?

Also, even though I have turned this bug report into a question, I
wonder. For practical purposes, doesn't this configuration issue amount
to a bug? I'm new to Ubuntu (and really like it). But I don't think it
should take many hours and so much digging to get an external monitor
working. It's not like I'm working with exotic equipment.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, 100% reproducible.

AND it was my fault!

Refer to the mangled "banshee.desktop" attachment.

Install this in /usr/share/applications/kde4 and observe that there is
now a Banshee menu item with an Amarok icon. Drag that to your desktop
and wait a moment...

See?

It's a corner-case... But it's guaranteed that users will do this... Cuz
I did.

[Bug 269577] [NEW] Preferences window unusable

2008-09-12 Thread mithras
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rsibreak-kde4

The preferences window is accessed by the context menu (right click on
system tray icon). You see a right placed and sized window, but all
wigdets are in a small frame. You see the upper left corner. Scrolling
in this window lets you see the lower parts. The window is completely
not usable.

I could not find any template file for the window, so I don't know how

[Bug 57091] Re: proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_syncookies=1 should be seriously considered to permit SYN flood defense...

2008-09-12 Thread Kees Cook
Enabling syncookies disables TCP window scaling[1], and in most situations,
existing SYN-flood protections in the kernel
already address most sorts of those attacks. In some situations (perhaps like
what alecm3 was experiencing) there are situations it might be needed, but for
a default, I am against[2][3] it if for no other reason than keeping window
scaling working.

[Bug 268095] Re: MASTER Network Manager should probe for GSM and CDMA command sets. It doesnt detect 3g modems with serial capability only in hal

2008-09-12 Thread Jason Costomiris
Antti nailed it.

I updated the 10-modem.fdi file to include support for the UM150 and
UM175. Attached is a patch against the current file from hal-info,
which I believe I'm now receiving from the nm PPA..

Works like a treat now. Very slick, nice work guys!

[Bug 269574] [NEW] Ubuntu i386 20080912 image stalls on detecting hardware

2008-09-12 Thread Marc Tardif
Public bug reported:

When attempting to netinstall the Ubuntu i386 20080912 image on an MTek
appliance, the installation stalls at:

  Detecting hardware...

At that point, the system is not responsive and pressing Alt-F2 to
change to the console doesn't work. I tried to repeatedly wget the
syslog during the installation and I attached the last I could retrieve
without getting a connection refused.

[Bug 269575] [NEW] apparmor profile for /usr/sbin/ntpd doesn't work for openntpd

2008-09-12 Thread Christian Hudon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor-profiles

The apparmor profile for /usr/sbin/ntpd that is shipped in the apparmor-
profiles packages doesn't work with openntpd, which also installs itself
as /usr/sbin/ntpd. (For example, a different permission is needed to
give access to the config file, etc.)

This should be solved in some way before moving that profile to enforce
mode, otherwise switching to enforce mode will break openttpd
installations.

[Bug 269520] Re: [intrepid] Adept installer shows same package multiple times

2008-09-12 Thread Jonathan Thomas
This is a bug in app-install-data. It takes the desktop files that apps
like Okular or Krita use for mimetype handling and generates .desktop
files for managers such as Adept Install or gnome-app-install to use.
You can check in gnome-app-install too, you'll see multiple Okulars and
Kritas there as well.

[Bug 269573] [NEW] installing tightvncserver should install xfonts-base

2008-09-12 Thread JeremyChapman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tightvncserver

This is an old one, but I cannot find a report for it, and was surprised
it is still a problem.

To reproduce:
Install ubuntu minimal, do 'apt-get install tightvncserver', then try and start
it with 'vncserver'.

Result: Couldn't start Xtightvnc; trying default font path.
Please set correct fontPath in the vncserver script.
Couldn't start Xtightvnc process.

Fix is simply to install xfonts-base, which aptitude installs as a
'recommended' package. However, it should be a dependency from my point of view
since package will not work otherwise.

[Bug 269253] Re: ath5k with AR5424 fails at startup or resume

2008-09-12 Thread Jeffrey Baker
Sure, I'll give it a whirl, but I'd like clarification. First, this bug
is on Intrepid and the package you refer to is intended for Hardy.
Second, Intrepid uses ath5k and this package is madwifi. They are two
separate code bases. Are you suggesting that I should try reverting to
madwifi? Or are you suggesting that this madwifi package contains a
newer ath5k (it does not, as far as I can tell from having downloaded
and unpacked it).

[Bug 269571] [NEW] Evolution Google calendar changes date ranges

2008-09-12 Thread lilbudda
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-plugins

1- Published appointment using the Google web interface
2- Created Google calendar in Evo
3- Evo shows appointment starting at the correct time but two weeks prior. The
End time is also 1 hour shorter than what is published on the Web.
4- Changing the calendar to the correct time/date will hold for the session but
reverts back after relaunching Evo.

Web calendar is still correct.

[Bug 268397] Re: blobwars license restrictions

2008-09-12 Thread Dara Adib
I got a response from upstream and have attached an updated
correspondence file. While I would recommend reading the correspondence,
the only thing decisively determined is to see the following forum URL:

http://www.happypenguin.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4725

I fully recommend reading the entire forum thread, but I'll quote some
important parts with comments.

Upstream author: "It's Stephen Sweeney of Parallel Realities here, the
guys that brought you Project: Starfighter, Metal Blob Solid, Virus
Killer, and Blob And Conquer."

All four of these games are included in Debian/Ubuntu and contain non-
free data. The problem is, therefore, much bigger than expected.

Upstream author: "You do know that the GPL only applies to software,
right? ie - the program code? [sic] ... I'm not going to say anything
more on the subject of the GPL and licenses because this isn't what I
started this thread to do (and I'm actually rather annoyed that you
decided to hijack it to vent your spleen). All I'll say is that there
are HUNDREDS of GPL'd games that include non-free assets, because the
authors' opinion was that the GPL applied only to their code, as did I.
"

This brings up the question if there might be other non-free data
besides just music and sounds, e.g. artwork/graphics, text, etc; in
other words anything other than code.

Upstream does not use a distributed version control system, which may
explain their reluctance to make any game modifications (burn-out).
Luckily:

Upstream author: "Once Blob And Conquer is 'finished' (or rather, has
hit v1.00) I'll likely be looking for maintainers for the other
projects, since my time on them will be done. "

Version 1.0 was released on August 17. This suggests that the
development for Blob Wars might become more transparent (e.g. version
control system for code development), letting the community "liberate"
the game.

Upstream author: "I found the sound effects by doing web searches for
things like "pistol" and "punch" and "splat" and stuff like that."

Which of course means they were not necessarily free in the sense of
freedom. And there is no proof without a doubt that it isn't illegal to
distribute the files. From what was said in the thread, it seems more
serious in terms of legality.

Another User: "For the "non-free" resources, since nobody yet gave much
information about *what* resources actually are affected, and *what*
permissions to use and/or distribute them, under *which* conditions, I'm
pretty unsure. Basically, without written permission to distribute them
freely, You and me and Stephen could be sued. Without written permission
to use them, users could be sued."

Same User: "@Stephen [upstream author]: I know that this posting looks
very different from what I wrote the other day, but I wasn't aware of
the fact that you collected some of the data files from random sources;
instead, I thought that the only problem was that some of the files
weren't "free enough" in the FSF/GNU way (for example, "free to use,
distribute, but don't modify the shit"). But this problem *really* is
different. Should you have a list of URLs from where you got the
resources, that'd be *really* helpful; such a list would allow to check
what's distributable and what must be replaced by other files."

This really should make us think twice about just separating the package
and moving the music and sounds to multiverse.

Upstream author: "Okay. I've removed the binaries of Blob Wars : Metal
Blob Solid, Blob Wars : Blob and Conquer, Project: Starfighter, and
Virus Killer from my website. I've also updated Happy Penguin to list
the games as non free."

Upstream author: "I've also written to the package maintainers of
Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, and Gentoo to let them know the packages are
illegal."

Upstream author: "An overreaction? No, because, as I am reminded
constantly, Linux could be sued. Well, I've updated my website to now
only carry tar balls and have added a note that the resources are Non
Free, so should not be distributed with Linux or carried in any of their
repositories."

At least this explains the license notice terms.

The most important point is a post quoting from an email by the upstream
author.

Upstream author: "So, to clarify, the source code, data sets and
graphics are Free. The rest is unknown (but as far as I'm concerned, I'm
just redistributing assets that were already available freely)."

Since the upstream author is finished with development of the game, he
is unlikely to cooperate with GNU/Linux distributions. That basically
leaves it to us, and unfortunately the sources of the data in the game
is not documented.

A lot of uncertainty here, so I think the decision on what to do should
be placed on person(s) with more experience (debian-legal?).

[Bug 269567] [NEW] libglx.so incorrectly redirected (Hardy to Intrepid upgrade)

2008-09-12 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

nvidia-glx-173 was installed on upgrading to intrepid. I do not use an
nVidia graphics card, but can see the advantages of installing this
package by default for those who do. However, as the majority probably
do not use nvidia cards, it doesn't seem appropriate to automatically
redirect /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so to the nvidia
version from the mesa version. On non-nvidia systems, this breaks gl. Is
it not possible to enable both, or to check on postinst what the best
action is?

[Bug 269568] [NEW] dpkg installs too easily some packages

2008-09-12 Thread Andreu Correa Casablanca
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

When the users install packages downloaded directly of Internet and
don't use tools as apt-get or aptitude, they could crash their system
too easily:

if i do: dpkg -i X_package

and the package isn't installable because the dependencies are broken,
dpkg write in any case on the package database the entry of X_package.
This behaviour causes a lot of problems if, for example, we want to
update the system with 'aptitude safe-upgrade'.

If the package isn't "important" then the problem isn't a problem... but
if we try to install the libc6 then the problem exists.

I thing that dpkg should analyse the dependencies before doing anything.

[Bug 269564] [NEW] Auto-detection of i915 fails with default or no xorg.conf

2008-09-12 Thread Toby Smithe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Although Xorg loads and compiz functions - all functionality is as
expected - the correct resolution, though apparently detected (see
Xorg.0.log), is not and cannot be employed, either manually or
automatically. The screen, ideally at 1280x800, is always displayed at
1024x768. I cannot test with an xorg.conf, as I have been unable to
generate one that works: dpkg produces only a skeleton, and anything
produced by displayconfig-gtk is rejected (though no sign of why is
given in Xorg.?.log) and gives only the bulletproof-x fallback. I am
unsure whether I should report any bug against displayconfig-gtk, as I
am unsure also whether it is now obsolete, or still recommended, or
whatever.

Right this can unfortunately happen both ways. One driver leaves or sets
a device into a state the other cannot or accidentally does not handle
well.

Yes, this is what it might look with MSI:
220: 0 0 PCI-MSI-edge eth0
And this without:
 21: 0 0 IO-APIC-fasteoi eth0
(note I quickly grabbed those from 2 different system, which probably run
different kernels, so it must not be exactly like that. ;-))

amount of system resources, far above normal. According to sysmonitor,
it us using about 1GB of ram and 16% of the processor.

To compare, Konquerer only uses about 8% of my processor, even with the
same tabs open doing the same things.

[Bug 268095] Re: MASTER Network Manager should probe for GSM and CDMA command sets. It doesnt detect 3g modems with serial capability only in hal

2008-09-12 Thread Alexander Sack
What we should do for now is to go through the bugs filed against NM
about not detected 3g devices and see if they would get fixed by this.
The idea is to look for modem and v.250 in the lshal output (Antti
correct me if that is inaccurate).

Thanks!
