[Bug 300693] Re: Thinkpad T61p hardlock flashing caps lock

2009-08-04 Thread nseidm1
I have a Asus M3A78-T mobo. A PNY Nvidia gts 250 pci express card. A
Phenom 9650. 8 gigs OCZ ram. Albeit the system is stable when not pushed
to the limit, I have been configuring compiz with a vnc connection on
one viewport, a virtual machine on another viewport, mythtv on another
viewport, and a complete webserver running in a headless virtual
machine. The system hard locks when the Win XP guest, the vnc
connection, and mythtv are open. If none are open the system is stable.
A screenshot of the window managers configuration is attached; it will
hardlock with the caps lock flashing inevitably.

I think it had to do with compiz. I tried building custom kernels. I
stripped everything out of the kernel except what was needed and the
system still hard locked. I tried disabling one customization at a time.
I though it the firewire stack at one point, but I reconfigured that in
various kernel builds, but no resolution was achieved. I tried using the
default nvidia driver in the repos, but notices no difference in
stability versus the up-to-date binaries.

There is absolutely nothing in any log file. A remote ssh connection
reveals nothing. Memory checks out. Hard disks check out. Processor
checks out. Video card checks out. This is clearly software related
because the system boot fine with nothing in the logs. My nose points
towards compiz, and or its interaction with the X server.

[Bug 377485] Re: SECURITY: Please upgrade to the latest SID version

2009-08-04 Thread Thomas Goirand
We are now 4 months later, after I sent a warning about this package.
Jaunty is still using version 2.5-1 that is saving backups of the
server's databases world readable. Is it that nobody cares at Ubuntu? It
took exactly 2 days in Debian to have this fixed. Why 4 months in
Ubuntu? I'm telling you guys, I'm advertising about the lack of package
security in Ubuntu, seeing how much this is *bad*.

I cannot stress it more: please upgrade ASAP Jaunty to 2.5-3.

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are

[Bug 408720] [NEW] Frequent crash on shutdown

2009-08-04 Thread Greg Schafer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Jaunty 64-bit, firefox-3.5.1

I've followed the advice at:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs

and herewith provide a backtrace report.

This crash is intermittent, but happens often enough to be annoying (ie:
multiple times a day). I can't find any pattern to the crashes but I'm a
heavy user of Google services (Gmail, Apps, etc) so this might be a
factor.

Thanks

[Bug 391309] Re: error message when trying to run update manager

2009-08-04 Thread Marlon Cisternas Milla
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Please sync delo 0.8-2.6 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

Debian has fixed ftbfs with gcc 4.3 and glibc 2.9 by explicitly
including limits.h which was the only ubuntu change so the package can
be synced again.

Changelog since current karmic version 0.8-2.5ubuntu1:

delo (0.8-2.6) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Non-maintainer upload.
  * Explicitly includes limits.h to fix FTBFS under glibc 2.9 and GCC 4.3.
Thanks to Bobby R. Ward and Ubuntu for the patch.
(Closes: #506050)
  * Fix FTBFS twice in a row by not manually deleting debian/patched in clean

  * Add Spanish Debconf translation. Thanks to Francisco Javier Cuadrado

[Bug 408731] [NEW] [jaunty] install doesn't recognize existing software raid and lvm from fedora fc9

2009-08-04 Thread mower
Public bug reported:

I'm _this_ close to becoming a fedora to ubuntu convert. (I know you
can't see how close together my fingers are, but trust me, they're
close.) But I need to keep my existing raid and lvm setup. After
selecting "Specify partitions manually," the "Prepare Partitions" screen
does not recognize my raid1 and lvm partitions. Sorry, I can't just
start over -- I have data in /home!

My setup: sda and sdb:

md0: /boot (mirrored raid1)
  /dev/sda1
  /dev/sdb1

/dev/sda2: swap
/dev/sdb2: swap

md1: LVM (mirrored raid1)
  /dev/sda3
  /dev/sdb3

  vg0-root: /
  vg0-home: /home

The "Prepare Partitions" screen sees:

/dev/sda1, Type: ext3
/dev/sda2, type: swap
/dev/sda3, type: (blank)

/dev/sdb1, type ext3
/dev/sdb2, type swap
/dev/sdb3, type (blank)

I don't see any way to tell the installer that sda1 and sdb1 are really
md0 or that sda3 and sdb3 are really an LVM partition on md1. The
Fedora core 11 installer sees the partitioning scheme for what it is --
too bad fc11 stinks.

I see lots of discussion on raid and lvm for previous ubuntu
intstallers... what happened?

2009-08-04 Thread James Henstridge
There was a report of this bug on the #ubuntuone IRC channel today. As
a work around, I directed the user to remove the two offending lines
from pyinotify.py.

The upstream fix for this problem is:

http://git.dbzteam.org/?p=pyinotify.git;a=blobdiff;f=pyinotify.py;h=9fb0031055e42d4bbda56ef5386c4f6c7391c311;hp=0bfc379a919234a7bb6caa18d47315a8da9cc472;hb=affbbb02dec05dc0d5d75508ff1258587b54d7d1;hpb=d8e42159304f73440f1b05c01f5e4bec00ee506a

It doesn't look like any new releases have been made since the fix went

[Bug 260251] Re: bttv driver dies with VIDIOC_DQBUF error

2009-08-04 Thread Stephan Fabel
Found that my bttv driver shared an IRQ with my network card. So I
disabled the network (modprobe -r b44), and voila - no real buffer
problems with my capture card anymore. It does not seem stable, but it
is generally working.

Could it be the motherboard?

If someone could point me to a resource where I can learn how to direct
either my ethernet or my bttv to a different IRQ, I would be eternally
grateful (modinfo gave ambiguous results).

Thanks for the links I will take a look at them anyway. You're saying
that GStreamer has a "easy to use" interface to access V4L devices also?

Thanks,
Stephan

[Bug 408733] [NEW] cdbs-edit-patch with an uppercase name doesn't apply debian/patches

2009-08-04 Thread Kristopher Ives
Public bug reported:

When I run `cdbs-edit-patch SftpCrashFix` on a fresh `apt-get source
nautilus-open-terminal` I was not viewing the source (`nano src
/nautilus-open-terminal.c`) with the debian/patches applied in the
spawned terminal. This caused me to have a lot of headache with others
who where stepping me through the process of making my first patch in
the debian build system, and most of them still think I am crazy.

Others where able to get it to work, by using `cdbs-edit-patch test` or
similar, but the key to this bug appears to be that if the patch name
passed to cdbs-edit-patch is not lowercase it doesn't apply the
debian/patches.

To reproduce try this:
$ apt-get source nautilus-open-terminal
$ cd nautilus-open-terminal*
$ cdbs-edit-patch BadPatchName
spawned $ nano src/nautilus-open-terminal.c

And notice that the #include isn't there, meaning the gio patch
(debian/patches) hasn't been applied. However, if you do the same thing
as above, except choose a lowercase patch name:

$ cdbs-edit-patch goodpatchname

And again check the nautilus-open-terminal.c you'll see the gio patch
*has* been applied.

[Bug 408733] Re: cdbs-edit-patch with an uppercase name doesn't apply debian/patches

2009-08-04 Thread Kristopher Ives
In the man page it explains that:

When patchname does not exist, cdbs-edit-patch will assume that a new
patch should be created. As with the above scenario, cdbs-edit-patch
will first create a temporary working source tree and apply all patches
up to the new patch in lexicographic order. When the shell is quit,
   cdbs-edit-patch will create patchname.

So this is just a stupid mistake and long learning experience.

[Bug 391040] Re: When eth0 is unmanaged, system connections for other NICs aren't displayed nor used

2009-08-04 Thread Alkis Georgopoulos
I tried putting https://edge.launchpad.net/~network-

Moreover, there was a second problem with the PPA nm version: the "[ ]
Available to all users" checkbox was disabled (grayed out) and I
couldn't even try to create a new system connection.

I just tried it out myself. Installed karmic alpha 3 with GPT,
seperate /boot and / on LVM

r...@ubuntu:~# grub-probe -t abstraction /
lvm
r...@ubuntu:~# grub-probe -t partmap /
gpt
r...@ubuntu:~# grub-probe -t fs /
ext2

Maybe your LVM has an unknown metadata header or multiple data/metadata
areas.
I think in these cases the error isn't always shown or something has
changed that they aren't anymore displayed.
Multiple metadata areas are now fixed upstream.

I must correct my last posting. Also after upgrating to Kernel 2.6.30-4

where system freezes some minutes after I logged in. This issue did only
occure if I boot with battery. When I have plugged in power it seems to
work without hangs.

it seems like a bit of a redundant check to me, trying to remove an

then the name is automatically removed anyway. unless theres something
i'm missing we could drop altogether. still, daniels fix will certainly
do the trick

[Bug 330811] Re: Can't connect to a hidden network

2009-08-04 Thread sebaestn
I also encounter problems connecting my hidden WLAN again. As Rob M
wrote I also have to reenter mit WPA key after every reboot. If I follow
the instructios of Scott I also don't have success. Furthermore, I
didn't change anything in my wireless network.

Now 0.0+svn966653-0ubuntu0.1 version is installed. As I wrote above, it
worked with the version from the PPA (I think it was the
0.0+svn961724-0ubuntu1~ppa1). I browsed through the aptitude logs but
couldn't figure out when my system updated to 966653. I have this
trouble for some weeks now, so it might have been right after the 966653
version has been packaged and released to the jaunty-updates repository.

[Bug 281131] Re: Signatures, When I have made a signature in HTML format and I save it. the next time that I used again I have the hole html format aroud mij signature. It changed completly.

2009-08-04 Thread Gerard Dethier
Hi all,

I have the same problem. Actually, Evolution does not save properly the
signature type in gconf database. If you create an HTML signature using
Evolution preferences, the signature will be correctly rendered in any
new mail until you restart Evolution. After the restart, the signature
is considered as plain text and the HTML code appears.

A workaround is to launch gconf-editor and then modify the key
/apps/evolution/mail/signatures (which contains the list of signatures
used by evolution) the following way :

1. Find the problematic signature in the list.
2. Change "format" attribut of tag "signature" from "text/plain" to "text/html".

Note: If you modify the signature afterwards using Evolution
preferences, the signature type will stay text/html.

[Bug 408706] Re: signatures of signed and encoded messages sent by kmail and opened by thunderbird/enigmail aren't recognized

I think the reason why enigmail wasnt updated is that the current

You are terribly wrong and your saying is not based on real-world facts
and are misleading.

You can always go to developer page and use non-packaged installation of
programs and install on your Linux system. (like you were quoting windblows
solution).
But on GNU/Linux you have another option, too:
Packaging and repositories gives you benefit that you don`t need to do
search>download>install on all
of your 1000`s machines, but they do it alone, quietly and if package is
updated in repository it is updated
on ALL machines in the whole world, running that repo/package repository.
Also such updates are tailored to exact system, tested, maintained and
supported.

Please, don`t argue in the future about things you don`t understand
fully, thanks.

We should put the --config=/etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf

[Bug 407273] Re: package python-chardet 1.0.1-1.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-08-04 Thread Bevin_Watson
Sorry, it turns out to be a bug with /usr/share/python/debian_defaults. To get
around another problem I had added
, python3.0, python3.1
to supported-versions where it should have been in unsupported-versions. I've
moved it now and everything seems OK. Could somebody please close this.
