[Bug 685801] Re: Serial console not working on Ubuntu 10.10
Scott, your statement is partially correct. You are right in understanding that I am trying to connect two Ubuntu 10.10 machines via serial console. In doing so, I am facing two problems mainly: - I am not able to write username/password (or any other input) using minicom/screen as a client - Output (boot messages and other text) isn't aligned properly (even when linewrap is enabled) Let me know, if you need any other information from my side regarding the same. ** Changed in: minicom (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to minicom in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685801 Title: Serial console not working on Ubuntu 10.10 -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 371181] Re: xauth authentication not working
The problem may be related to Ubuntu (experienced on 10.4) apparently executing the commands xhost +si:localuser:`id -un` xhost +si:localuser:root xhost +si:localuser:gdm or does something equivalent when you log in. Just type xhost to see the list of non-xauth authorizations currently enabled for your X11 server. The first of the above lines is in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_localhost The exmh background daemon considers the presence of any of these to be bad and therefore refuses to work. Executing the above three lines with + changed to - is a workaround, but ultimately exmh-bg (or a library it uses) probably needs patching to tolerate this practice. [Bug 595877] [NEW] impossible to use Ports on mySQL - Upstart/Config Problem

Connected to 127.0.0.1. Escape character is '^]'. @ 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3(gibberesh)Connection closed by foreign host. always and forever mySQL is forced to use the socket or nothing. Have disabled apparmor, disabled the default configs etc. but somehow no matter what I try, it always gets overridden and refuses connections on the port. this is the case even though the mySQL log itself says that it is listening on the port + socket. 100618 1:32:29 [Note] /usr/sbin/mysqld: ready for connections. Version: '5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3' socket: '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' port: 3306 (Ubuntu) finally I manually start mySQL and totally bypass the rc/upstart system. and finally I can indeed connect using the port. This Works: /usr/sbin/mysqld --bind-address=127.0.0.1 --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3606 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock except that the mysql client program itself is still hardcoded in some way to only use the socket despite it's config file clearly telling it to use the port. and despite me telling it on the command line that --port=3606 I find this situation to be rather uncharming and unendearing. ;-o There are a lot of valid reasons for programs to want to use ports, you should allow the programmer to decided about the security issues, you should not force people into a straight-jacket and padded room because they *might* hurt themselves. -- guard rails yes, locked padded rooms, No! I am not inclined to reverse engineer the entire upstart system in order to find this problem. actually, this points out a very serious problem with the upstart design, everything is now hidden into obscurity and problems become impossible to find and fix without huge effort. Hi codeslinger, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and help us make Ubuntu better. [Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh
In looking at the code in OpenSSH, the -D flag only affects this portion of sshd.c, around line 1740: /* * If not in debugging mode, and not started from inetd, disconnect * from the controlling terminal, and fork. The original process * exits. */ if (!(debug_flag || inetd_flag || no_daemon_flag)) { #ifdef TIOCNOTTY int fd; #endif /* TIOCNOTTY */ if (daemon(0, 0) 0) fatal(daemon() failed: %.200s, strerror(errno)); /* Disconnect from the controlling tty. */ #ifdef TIOCNOTTY fd = open(_PATH_TTY, O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY); if (fd = 0) { (void) ioctl(fd, TIOCNOTTY, NULL); close(fd); } #endif /* TIOCNOTTY */ } no_daemon_flag isn't used anywhere else in the code. Consequently, this code is why the daemon forks on reload, because it re-execs itself, causing this code to be hit. When run with -D, there's no call to daemon. The call to daemon should only chdir to / and close stdin/stdout/stderr, redirecting them to /dev/null. Given that upstart will already have done that, this is a non issue. The code then ioctl's on stdin to get rid of the controlling TTY, which also has no effect when run via upstart since it is connected to /dev/null. I believe this would change the behavior if we were using console owner, and sshd would exit on control-C in console if one was using that, but we're not going to do that, nor would be a reason to do that for sshd. I tested this on natty and maverick, killing the daemon in various ways, making sure that user sessions stay alive, and that reloads keep track of the daemon. I'm confident that this change is safe and will not cause any operational issues with openssh-server. I've submitted a merge proposal adding -D and dropping expect fork, which would fix this bug. ** Changed in: openssh (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Clint Byrum (clint-fewbar) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687535 Title: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

This was fixed in Natty but a little bit differently, see bug #656415 . Should the fix be taken from there and SRU'd back to Maverick and Lucid or is the above patch sufficient (or maybe even better) ? In Natty there is this for checking if the user/group exists: if ! getent passwd | grep -q ^${_USERNAME}: if ! getent group | grep -q ^${_USERNAME}: And in this bugreport the fix being suggested in comment #6 is using getent to find the entry, without using grep. Not using expect fork of course would mean that ssh would be reported as running before it was actually listening for connections. [Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)
Note that there is one incorrect assumption, which is that sendsigs will never kill any upstart jobs. In fact, it does make one attempt to kill -9 any still running upstart jobs: if [ -z $alldead ] ; then log_action_begin_msg Killing all remaining processes #report_unkillable killall5 -9 $OMITPIDS # SIGKILL log_action_end_msg 1 Unfortunately, it doesn't actually wait for this kill -9 to finish, so its still possible to have running processes there corrupting the system. I do think the appropriate fix is to have umountfs emit an 'unmounting- filesystems' event and anything that does a 'start on local-filesystems' or 'start on filesystem' should also 'stop on unmounting-filesystems', causing this to wait for upstart to give up on its jobs (which is nice as they can have their own well defined kill timeout). What I don't know yet, is whether upstart will check to see that its SIGKILL actually ended the job, or just report that it sent it, and move on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to mysql-5.1 in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/688541 Title: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs) -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)

There are quite a few examples here: acpid, atd, cron, irqbalance, etc which all have: start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [!2345] Either those jobs are buggy to not specify the start on (local-)filesystems dependency or your criteria is not sufficient. [Bug 10239] Re: dhcp3-client: Does not send hostname to server by default
Dec. 2010; bug is still present in Mint Linux Debian Edition. A nice way to fix this would be to modify dhclient, adding a function to its Data Expression parser called, something like, hostname that would simply return the client's hostname. Or, solve this and the whole class of related problems in one blow by adding a more generic function called shell, which would take a shell command string as its argument and return the string output to stdout as its result. With such a shell function, one could simply add the following to the dhclient.conf file: send host-name = shell hostname -s #the -s suppresses any domain name Such functions would be straightforward extensions. See man page dhcp- eval.5 for details on Data Expressions. I don't understand the earlier comment that the program doesn't work this way But, given that the upstream maintainers do not seem to be readily accepting patches, I have resorted to the simple hack of rewriting the dhclient.conf file just before dhclient starts. # mv /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf /etc/dhcp/dhclient.base # mv /sbin/dhclient /sbin/dhclient.original # save the attached script to /sbin/dhclient # chmod +x /sbin/dhclient After you do this, just remember that dhclient.conf will be rewritten. Make any configuration changes in dhclient.base instead. If the upstream devs indicate that they are interested in accepting the Data Function patches described above, I would be willing to submit them. However, I won't investigate further until the basic idea is discussed and accepted. Otherwise, the effort is just wasting everyone's time. [Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)
Great point, thanks for pointing that out! rc-sysinit does not start until filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo, and so, runlevel 2, which is reached by callint rc-sysinit, implies all of the services you mention. It is important to point out that we must include any of those *implied* to be started up by filesystem or local- filesystems. Before I go off and throw one together, I wonder if there is a tool that reads through /etc/init/*.conf and would simulate each event and the resulting chaos^H^H^H^H^Hstarted jobs? Such a thing would be massively useful.

[Bug 690042] [NEW] libvirtd tries to disable ipv6's accept_ra even when ipv6 is disabled outright in the kernel
Public bug reported: When the system has ipv6 disabled outright, /usr/sbin/libvirtd still tries to blindly disable accept_ra despite it's destined failure to open /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/virbr1/accept_ra. It does not continue past this failure. Expected behavior is that it should either attempt to stat this file/path first, then continue without disabling accept_ra should it not exist, or at a minimum continue to start the network in spite of the failure to open the file. Note: At the moment, this issue is a complete BLOCKER for me. Not simply a mere inconvenience. The current immaturity of ipv6 support is some applications has forced the need for me to disable it outright to prevent some 3rd party services from trying to bind to ipv6 interfaces. virsh # net-start Virtual_Cloud error: Failed to start network Virtual_Cloud error: cannot disable /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/virbr1/accept_ra: No such file or directory Using version: # dpkg --list | grep libvirt ii libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu27.7 the programs for the libvirt library ii libvirt0 0.7.5-5ubuntu27.7 library for interfacing with different virtu ii python-libvirt 0.7.5-5ubuntu27.7 libvirt Python bindings ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/690042 Title: libvirtd tries to disable ipv6's accept_ra even when ipv6 is disabled outright in the kernel -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 629234] Re: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Imre, I like the single call to getent better than the grep as well. There is an added benefit, which is that this key is taken literally, while passing it to grep may actually cause false positives by parsing as a regular expression. For instance, if you have a user ftpuser and you input ftp.ser As the user during configuration of vsftpd, it will match the . against the u and NOT create the user. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vsftpd in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/629234 Title: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 458637] Re: Windows Live Sign-In assistant prevents samba from accessing Windows 7 shares
Quoting Christian Brandt (bran...@psi5.com): samba support in ubuntu always sucked biggest time. usually every ubuntu release only works with the second last windows version while the upstream samba team has patched and working versions out for months. samba with ubuntu is pretty much useless except I do EVERYTHING myself. [Bug 689530] [NEW] Can't change icons GTK theme
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon I have reinstalled my laptop because I changed my HDD for a SDD. On first install, on first boot, I wasn't able to change icons or gtk themes. So I thought something went wrong and decided to reinstall. After second install everything seemed right... until I applied all awaiting updates, then the problem came back. The only solution I have found is running # sudo gnome-settings-daemon From terminal after each boot... That is tedious.
