[Bug 685801] Re: Serial console not working on Ubuntu 10.10

2010-12-13 Thread Gaurav Aggarwal
Scott, your statement is partially correct. You are right in understanding that
I am trying to connect two Ubuntu 10.10 machines via serial console. In doing
so, I am facing two problems mainly:
- I am not able to write username/password (or any other input) using
minicom/screen as a client
- Output (boot messages and other text) isn't aligned properly (even when
linewrap is enabled)
Let me know, if you need any other information from my side regarding the same.

[Bug 244233] Re: Logrotate is noisy with: Re-opening all log files

2010-12-13 Thread Imre Gergely
I've updated the bug description with some details for a SRU and I've
tested the patch provided by pearcec and it's working as expected.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: mailman

  When logrotate runs for mailman you get this:

  /etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
  Re-opening all log files
  Re-opening all log files

  It calls mailmanctl reopen. If it called it with a -q it would be quiet.
+
+ IMPACT: when rotating the mailman logfiles, 'mailmanctl reopen' is called from
+ /etc/logrotate.d/mailman, to get mailman to reopen the new logfiles. For every
+ call, mailman prints message Re-opening all log files, which gets sent to
+ the user in a (useless) email.
+
+ This was fixed upstream in mailman 2.1.9-10 and Karmic has 2.1.12-2.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+
+ - install mailman (apt-get install mailman)
+ - create the default mailman list with the following command:
+ newlist mailman
+ - start mailman (/etc/init.d/mailman start), there should be a couple of files
+   in /var/log/mailman
+ - force a logrotate of these files by running:
+ logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/mailman
+ - you should see the following output:
+
+ r...@utest-hhs32:/var/log/mailman# logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.d/mailman
+ Re-opening all log files
+ Re-opening all log files
+
+ This is called from crontab so there will be an email sent to users
+ every time.
+
+ - install the patched version, and run the above command again, it should be
+ quiet, without any messages.
+
+ REGRESSION POTENTIAL: low. According to the mailmanctl help page:
+
+ -q/--quiet
+ Don't print status messages. Error messages are still printed to
+   standard error.
+
+ By applying this patch, users will not get the informational messages but they
+ will still get any error message.

[Bug 371181] Re: xauth authentication not working

2010-12-13 Thread Markus Kuhn
The problem may be related to Ubuntu (experienced on 10.4) apparently
executing the commands

xhost +si:localuser:`id -un`
xhost +si:localuser:root
xhost +si:localuser:gdm

or does something equivalent when you log in. Just type xhost to see
the list of non-xauth authorizations currently enabled for your X11
server. The first of the above lines is in

  /etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_localhost

The exmh background daemon considers the presence of any of these to be
bad and therefore refuses to work. Executing the above three lines with
+ changed to - is a workaround, but ultimately exmh-bg (or a library it
uses) probably needs patching to tolerate this practice.

See also man xhost.

2010-12-13 Thread Artur Rona
backuppc (3.2.0-1ubuntu1) natty; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable. (LP: #677799) Remaining changes:
- debian/backup.init, debian/rules, debian/postinst: Do not call init
  script on shutdown and reboot (TearDown) (Debian #488660)
- debian/control: Drop build dependency to 'par2', it's in universe.
- configure.pl: Do not test for par2 being available at build time
- debian/control: depend on default-mta | mail-transport-agent, instead of
  enumerating a long list of alternative MTAs.
  * Dropped changes:
- Suggest libio-dirent-perl, its in universe (now in main)
- debian/control: Add libtime-modules-perl to Depends (applied in Debian)

[Bug 688773] Re: euca2ools give 'SignatureDoesNotMatch' error

2010-12-13 Thread Scott Moser
I've done a little digging.
This works:
   python2.6 /usr/bin/euca-describe-instances

This fails:
   python /usr/bin/euca-describe-instances

Ie, this is fallout of a change from 2.6 to 2.7 in python.

** Package changed: python-defaults (Ubuntu) = python2.7 (Ubuntu)

   The groupadd command exits with the following values:

The file /etc/gshadow is blocked by some other process, because of this
the clamav postinst script can't create the clamav group.

This is not a clamav bug.

Please check for running processes that could otherwise block
/etc/gshadow, maybe try an Ubuntu restart or see if there's an
/etc/gshadow.lock (?) file or something like that and if you find one
try the following command:

sudo lsof |grep gshadow

Maybe this will reveal a process that's blocking the gshadow file.

That is the reason why the package FTBFS. Changing the build-deps to
ant1.7/ant1.7-optional should help.

Here's the same request on Python 2.7.1, boto 2.0b3 and natty:

I'm still not exactly sure what the problem is but upgrading to the
newest version of boto fixes it. I'll track down the exact issue and
then we can figure out how we want to fix it in natty.

  testing requires that you have an ec2 (or UEC) account set up.

If you did have access to an AWS secret key and access key, recreating
would look like:

aws_secret_key= # your key here
EC2_URL=https://ec2.amazonaws.com
EC2_ACCESS_KEY=${aws_access_key}

always and forever mySQL is forced to use the socket or nothing.
Have disabled apparmor, disabled the default configs etc.

but somehow no matter what I try, it always gets overridden and refuses

finally I manually start mySQL and totally bypass the rc/upstart system. and
finally I can indeed connect using the port.

This Works:
/usr/sbin/mysqld --bind-address=127.0.0.1  --datadir=/var/lib/mysql
--user=mysql  --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid   --skip-external-locking
--port=3606  --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

except that the mysql client program itself is still hardcoded in some
way to only use the socket despite it's config file clearly telling it
to use the port. and despite me telling it on the command line that
--port=3606

I find this situation to be rather uncharming and unendearing. ;-o

There are a lot of valid reasons for programs to want to use ports, you
should allow the programmer to decided about the security issues, you
should not force people into a straight-jacket and padded room because
they *might* hurt themselves. -- guard rails yes, locked padded rooms,
No!

I am not inclined to reverse engineer the entire upstart system in order
to find this problem. actually, this points out a very serious problem
with the upstart design, everything is now hidden into obscurity and
problems become impossible to find and fix without huge effort.

I can work around this issue for now by writing my own init script.
But this whole mess needs to be rethought and mySQL Ports MUST be
enabled to function.

[Bug 595877] Re: impossible to use Ports on mySQL - Upstart/Config Problem

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi codeslinger, thanks for taking the time to file this bug report and
help us make Ubuntu better.

This appears to be an issue with the mysql upstart job or my.cnf, not
with upstart, so I am moving it to the appropriate package.

I know it has been a long time, but can you maybe upload
/etc/mysql/my.cnf and /etc/init/mysql.conf ? (if you have replication
setup, my.cnf may have passwords, so please make sure to redact those).

Marking Incomplete pending response from codeslinger.

2010-12-13 Thread Dave Walker
@Steven, hopefully it should soon hit the -proposed archive which it's
currently in the queue for. Then verification needs to be undertaken on
that package (your help there would be appreciated!). Once that is
done, it should land in -updates shortly afterwards. Until then, it
makes sense to keep using my PPA package (which i've intentionality left
the version number such that when this does hit -updates you'll upgrade
automatically).

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
In looking at the code in OpenSSH, the -D flag only affects this portion
of sshd.c, around line 1740:

/*
 * If not in debugging mode, and not started from inetd, disconnect
 * from the controlling terminal, and fork. The original process
 * exits.
 */
if (!(debug_flag || inetd_flag || no_daemon_flag)) {
#ifdef TIOCNOTTY
int fd;
#endif /* TIOCNOTTY */
if (daemon(0, 0)  0)
fatal(daemon() failed: %.200s, strerror(errno));

/* Disconnect from the controlling tty. */
#ifdef TIOCNOTTY
fd = open(_PATH_TTY, O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY);
if (fd = 0) {
(void) ioctl(fd, TIOCNOTTY, NULL);
close(fd);
}
#endif /* TIOCNOTTY */
}

no_daemon_flag isn't used anywhere else in the code.

Consequently, this code is why the daemon forks on reload, because it
re-execs itself, causing this code to be hit. When run with -D, there's
no call to daemon.

The call to daemon should only chdir to / and close stdin/stdout/stderr,
redirecting them to /dev/null. Given that upstart will already have done
that, this is a non issue. The code then ioctl's on stdin to get rid of
the controlling TTY, which also has no effect when run via upstart since
it is connected to /dev/null. I believe this would change the behavior
if we were using console owner, and sshd would exit on control-C in
console if one was using that, but we're not going to do that, nor would
be a reason to do that for sshd.

I tested this on natty and maverick, killing the daemon in various ways,
making sure that user sessions stay alive, and that reloads keep track
of the daemon. I'm confident that this change is safe and will not cause
any operational issues with openssh-server.

I've submitted a merge proposal adding -D and dropping expect fork,
which would fix this bug.

[Bug 629234] Re: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-12-13 Thread Imre Gergely
This was fixed in Natty but a little bit differently, see bug #656415 .
Should the fix be taken from there and SRU'd back to Maverick and Lucid
or is the above patch sufficient (or maybe even better) ?

In Natty there is this for checking if the user/group exists:

if ! getent passwd | grep -q ^${_USERNAME}:
if ! getent group | grep -q ^${_USERNAME}:

And in this bugreport the fix being suggested in comment #6 is using
getent to find the entry, without using grep. If nothing else, it feels
cleaner:

if ! getent passwd ${_USERNAME} /dev/null 21
if ! getent group ${_USERNAME} /dev/null 21

Not using expect fork of course would mean that ssh would be reported as
running before it was actually listening for connections.

 There would be 2 ways to fix this:
 1. Don't have ssh fork on relod, but keep the same pid
 2. Use a different mechanism in upstart to keep track of ssh. Maybe a pid

[Bug 687535] Re: upstart loses track of ssh daemon after reload ssh

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
The code looks something like this:

[ option parsing, config check, etc ]
sshd.c, line 1744: daemon()
[ reinit logs, start random number generator, chdir to /, ignore SIGPIPE ]
sshd.c, line 1774: server_listen() -- socket(), bind(), listen(), etc.

So, there's already a race between considering it started (at the fork
caused by daemon()), and sshd listening, right? Its just that now we're
considering it started before the config check and option parsing, so
that does give any dependent upstart jobs a bigger head start than they
already had.

[Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
Note that there is one incorrect assumption, which is that sendsigs will
never kill any upstart jobs.

In fact, it does make one attempt to kill -9 any still running upstart
jobs:

if [ -z $alldead ] ; then
log_action_begin_msg Killing all remaining processes
#report_unkillable
killall5 -9 $OMITPIDS # SIGKILL
log_action_end_msg 1

Unfortunately, it doesn't actually wait for this kill -9 to finish, so
its still possible to have running processes there corrupting the
system.

I do think the appropriate fix is to have umountfs emit an 'unmounting-
filesystems' event and anything that does a 'start on local-filesystems'
or 'start on filesystem' should also 'stop on unmounting-filesystems',
causing this to wait for upstart to give up on its jobs (which is nice
as they can have their own well defined kill timeout). What I don't know
yet, is whether upstart will check to see that its SIGKILL actually
ended the job, or just report that it sent it, and move on.

And, whoops, I just re-read that, its using killall5's -o to still omit
those processes.

Please disregard that last message then.

Re: [Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)

2010-12-13 Thread Michael Biebl
2010/12/14 Clint Byrum cl...@fewbar.com:

 I do think the appropriate fix is to have umountfs emit an 'unmounting-
 filesystems' event and anything that does a 'start on local-filesystems'
 or 'start on filesystem' should also 'stop on unmounting-filesystems',

What do you do about services which have
start on runlevel [2345] and the binary is in /usr?

There are quite a few examples here: acpid, atd, cron, irqbalance, etc
which all have:

start on runlevel [2345]
stop on runlevel [!2345]

Either those jobs are buggy to not specify the start on
(local-)filesystems dependency or your criteria is not sufficient.

Imho the major problem here is, that there is a mixup between
dependencies that need to be satisfied to be able to run a job and
when (in which runlevels) to start a job.

[Bug 10239] Re: dhcp3-client: Does not send hostname to server by default

2010-12-13 Thread Brent Roman
Dec. 2010; bug is still present in Mint Linux Debian Edition.
A nice way to fix this would be to modify dhclient, adding a function to its
Data Expression parser called, something like, hostname that would simply
return the client's hostname. Or, solve this and the whole class of related
problems in one blow by adding a more generic function called shell, which
would take a shell command string as its argument and return the string output
to stdout as its result. With such a shell function, one could simply add
the following to the dhclient.conf file:

send host-name = shell hostname -s  #the -s suppresses any domain name

Such functions would be straightforward extensions. See man page dhcp-
eval.5 for details on Data Expressions. I don't understand the
earlier comment that the program doesn't work this way

But, given that the upstream maintainers do not seem to be readily
accepting patches, I have resorted to the simple hack of rewriting the
dhclient.conf file just before dhclient starts.

#   mv  /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf  /etc/dhcp/dhclient.base
#   mv  /sbin/dhclient  /sbin/dhclient.original
# save the attached script to /sbin/dhclient
#   chmod +x /sbin/dhclient

After you do this, just remember that dhclient.conf will be rewritten.
Make any configuration changes in dhclient.base instead.

If the upstream devs indicate that they are interested in accepting the
Data Function patches described above, I would be willing to submit
them. However, I won't investigate further until the basic idea is
discussed and accepted. Otherwise, the effort is just wasting
everyone's time. (mostly mine :-)

[Bug 688541] Re: race condition on shutdown (leads to corrupted fs)

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
Great point, thanks for pointing that out!

rc-sysinit does not start until filesystem and net-device-up IFACE=lo,
and so, runlevel 2, which is reached by callint rc-sysinit, implies all
of the services you mention. It is important to point out that we must
include any of those *implied* to be started up by filesystem or local-
filesystems.

Before I go off and throw one together, I wonder if there is a tool that
reads through /etc/init/*.conf and would simulate each event and the
resulting chaos^H^H^H^H^Hstarted jobs? Such a thing would be massively
useful.

[Bug 690042] [NEW] libvirtd tries to disable ipv6's accept_ra even when ipv6 is disabled outright in the kernel

2010-12-13 Thread Anomaly256
Public bug reported:

When the system has ipv6 disabled outright, /usr/sbin/libvirtd still
tries to blindly disable accept_ra despite it's destined failure to open
/proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/virbr1/accept_ra. It does not continue past
this failure.

Expected behavior is that it should either attempt to stat this
file/path first, then continue without disabling accept_ra should it not
exist, or at a minimum continue to start the network in spite of the
failure to open the file.

Note: At the moment, this issue is a complete BLOCKER for me. Not
simply a mere inconvenience. The current immaturity of ipv6 support is
some applications has forced the need for me to disable it outright to
prevent some 3rd party services from trying to bind to ipv6 interfaces.

2010-12-13 Thread Clint Byrum
Imre, I like the single call to getent better than the grep as well.
There is an added benefit, which is that this key is taken literally,
while passing it to grep may actually cause false positives by parsing
as a regular expression. For instance, if you have a user

ftpuser

and you input

ftp.ser

As the user during configuration of vsftpd, it will match the . against
the u and NOT create the user.

 samba with ubuntu is pretty much useless except I do EVERYTHING myself.

 It must be really hard to to a wget samba.tgz and deb-build samba.deb,
 must it?

Thank you for being so supportive of the work of Debian and Ubuntu
maiutnainers of samba. Your kind comments are really appreciated at
their own value.

[Bug 689530] [NEW] Can't change icons GTK theme

2010-12-13 Thread Lox
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I have reinstalled my laptop because I changed my HDD for a SDD.

On first install, on first boot, I wasn't able to change icons or gtk
themes. So I thought something went wrong and decided to reinstall.

After second install everything seemed right... until I applied all
awaiting updates, then the problem came back.

The only solution I have found is running

# sudo gnome-settings-daemon

From terminal after each boot... That is tedious.

The weird thing is that has never happened before I changed my hard-
drive for a SSD...

[Bug 665815] Re: firefox oops this is embarrassing

2010-12-13 Thread RedSingularity
Very sorry for the late response on my part!

Ok, so I am going to try this on a fresh 64 Bit version of Maverick.
Can you give me the steps to follow in order to reproduce it so i know
we are doing it the same way?

Thanks!
