Thanks for the kind hint. In the moment, I have no "further" issues or
queries apart from those raised - and remaining unanswered - in this bug
(and the original support case, of course).

If I had just one wish to fulfill by canonical support (that I've paid
for), it would be not to take me for a fool.

[Bug 580408] Re: Option 'No' at question 'Continue without installing GRUB?' does nothing. Forced to answer 'Yes'.

2010-12-16 Thread Richard Laager
Whoops, in my haste to add the warning, I forgot some potentially useful
debugging information...

The systems that work have grub-pc/install_devices set to a path under
/dev/disk/by-id. On the systems that don't work, the /dev/disk/by-id
directory doesn't contain anything for the hard drive. One has a USB
drive only; the rest have no /dev/disk/by-id directory at all.

[Bug 580408] Re: Option 'No' at question 'Continue without installing GRUB?' does nothing. Forced to answer 'Yes'.

2010-12-16 Thread Richard Laager
I have grub-pc version 1.98-1ubuntu9 installed and this is still a
problem (on multiple servers). It seems that grub-pc/install_devices is
set to the empty set.

This fixes it for me, without changing anything on systems that are not
affected:
if sudo debconf-show grub-pc | grep -q "install_devices:$" ; then echo SET
grub-pc/install_devices `mount | grep "on / " | cut -d' ' -f1 | sed
"s|[0-9]\+$||"` | sudo debconf-communicate && sudo dpkg-reconfigure
-fnoninteractive grub-pc ; fi

TO THOSE LOOKING FOR A MAGICAL FIX: THIS COMMAND IS ONLY SAFE IF YOU
WANT TO INSTALL GRUB ON THE DEVICE THAT HOLDS THE PARTITION FOR / AND
EVEN THEN, IT MAY BE UNSAFE IN VARIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES. IF YOU ARE GOING
TO BLINDLY COPY-AND-PASTE, DON'T BLAME ME FOR BREAKAGE.

[Bug 691425] [NEW] Samsung N210i915/Intel N10/:Screen stays black after resume + setting brightness won't work

2010-12-16 Thread PeterPall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

On a fresh install of Ubuntu my new Samsung N210 plus netbook worked like magic
with one exception:
If I close the lid it suspends or hibernates and if I open the lid again it is
up in half a second - but the screen stays black.

Found a blog that told to try a

setpci  -s 00:02.0 f4.b=

(actually even if the writer of this blog did own the same netbook his
graphics card was at a different pciid; Brightness ranges between 00
(off) and ff (full brightness). And since this change worked I added a
file named

/etc/pm/sleep.d/99_LightsOn

with the following contents:

#!/bin/sh
case "$1" in
resume|thaw)
/usr/bin/setpci  -s 00:02.0 f4.b=50
;;
esac

which resolved the case for me.

Since setting the brightness by the brightness keys won't work either
and booting with the "noapic" or the "nolapic" option will lead to a
complete black screen with backlight off, too, I assume it is a kernel
bug. But feel free to reassign at will.

[Bug 688986] Re: --invisible/--autostart/--autoclose do not appear to be working

2010-12-16 Thread Nick Coghlan
Those are the commands I was trying that didn't work though -
soundkonverter would instead quit almost immediately without actually
doing anything. That's why I reverted to the semi-automated approach of
clicking manually through the GUI buttons - if I didn't, the conversion
never even started (I was using 'ps' as a quick hack to check when the
process was terminating).

Unfortunately, I'm away from the machine where this was happening for
the next couple of weeks - I'll have a chance to dig into again early in
the new year.

What architecture is this? I don't see this on i386. Also what's the

I don't think the security patches would have affected this.

[Bug 194155] Re: mc and gnome-terminal, F10 key conflict

2010-12-16 Thread mgoldey
For the benefit of anyone who finds this looking for advice on getting
Gnome to pass function keys to an application: another solution is to
use the mouse and click on the F10 label. This works in HTOP, for
example.

It also helps to use the built in help -- e.g., HTOP accepts "q" as a
substitute for F10 generally -- but it's had to RTFM using Gnome
terminal, because Gnome hijacks F1, too, and brings up a system help
window. There doesn't seem to be any way to turn that interception off.
Even if the Keyboard Shortcut for desktop help is changed from "help"
(btw, my keyboard doesn't have a "help" key; does yours?), the terminal
application still intercepts F1.

I would file the F1/F10 issue as a partly-addressed design problem w/
Gnome Terminal, rather than as a bug.

[Bug 691414] [NEW] clamav taking extremely long time to load database

2010-12-16 Thread Kees Cook
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamav

# apt-cache policy clamav-daemon
clamav-daemon:
  Installed: 0.96.3+dfsg-2ubuntu1.0.10.04.2
  Candidate: 0.96.3+dfsg-2ubuntu1.0.10.04.2

Since the security update of clamav, the daemon takes multiple minutes
to load its virus database, and is causing random timeouts for users of
the unix socket (in my case, mimedefang), triggering repeated 400-series
email temp-fails each time freshclam issues a reload request.

strace just shows it slowly allocating memory and not doing much else.

Logs don't seem to help:
Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010 -> +++ Started at Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010
Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010 -> clamd daemon 0.96.3 (OS: linux-gnu, ARCH: x86_64,
CPU: x86_64)
Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010 -> Log file size limit disabled.
Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010 -> Reading databases from /var/lib/clamav/
Thu Dec 16 20:58:34 2010 -> Not loading PUA signatures.
Thu Dec 16 20:58:38 2010 -> Loaded 856324 signatures.

But minutes later, it's still spinning at 100% CPU and non-responsive on
its socket.

Here's the backtrace while its stuck:

[Bug 587388] Re: [HP G60]0x103c360b Conexant CX20583 (Pebble HSF) Internal mic not functional

2010-12-16 Thread Marcelo Ruiz
@David
I have a Toshiba Qosmio X500 with an Intel HDA sound card with the Conexant
CX20583 (Pebble HSF).
After installing HDAAnalizer.py and after changing the connection from 0x23 to
0x17, the internal mic started to work.
I hope this helps you to develop a solution for other users.
Let me know if I can be of help.

[Bug 690927] Re: Please merge tpb 0.6.4-6 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-12-16 Thread Bhavani Shankar
hello Mahyuddin,

this looks a bit better than the former but still a few things that
caught my eye are

1. its LP: #690927 instead of LP: #12345 in the LP closure directive

2. Please make the changelog more verbose i.e when you mention for
example debian/init.d you should mention what is its relevant change
affected in ubuntu so that its that much easier to track changes from
previous merged version

3. Please update your Maintainer field to Ubuntu Developers instead of the old address (Hint: you
can use update-maintainer from ubuntu-dev-tools for the same)

4. Your changelog contains whitespaces such as

@@ -186,13 +269,13 @@ tpb (0.3.0-1) unstable; urgency=low
   * new upstream version

Please delete/correct them

5. As Evan said, I too see unnecessary deletion of commented out lines
in debian/rules which can be avoided I think

Unsubscribing sponsors for now. Please resubscribe when the above points
are taken care of

[Bug 688423] Re: [Conexant CX20583 (Pebble HSF)] Recording problem

2010-12-16 Thread Marcelo Ruiz
@David
I solved the problem by installing HDAAnalizer.py following instructions in
www.alsa-project.com and follow David Henningsson instructions in the thread I
mentioned earlier:

go to node 0x14, and make sure connection 0x17 is selected

After selecting connection 0x17, the internal mic started to work.
Also, I have added options snd-hda-intel model=laptop in alsa-base.conf.

I hope this info helps you find a definite solution to the problem.
Let me know if I can be of help.

[Bug 655078] Re: Beta 10.10 Nvidia update broke Sony Vaio VPCF136FM installation

2010-12-16 Thread Michael E. Adams
pal,

Thanks for the response. I see that these personal packages are not
supported by Ubuntu (which is fine and I thank the folks developing in
this ppa for their hard work). If this works for folks, that is good.
Since I am operational with your prior driver links and my posted
script, I prefer to wait for Ubuntu to provide their supported fix. That
is, I am waiting for the opportunity to test one (hint, hint Ubuntu)!

Thanks,
Mike

Have now reverted to the 0ubuntu3 compiz and see it didn't matter ( and every
thing is working fine again in the Desktop Edition w/ unity and compiz
