[Bug 1766076] Re: USB over thunderbolt turns off every once in a while

2021-04-25 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
I've been experiencing the same problem on 20.04 with a different HW
setup: Lenovo thinkpad X1 Carbon gen7 (BIOS, thunderbolt controller,
etc... firmware all fully up to date), and an Alogic Thunderbolt 3.0
Docking Station.

It generally works fine, but every now and then, the xhci controller in
the dock itself stops working causing by webcam to vanish.

Interestingly no other function of the dock stops: DP still works,
USB1/2 devices too such as my headset, keyboard and mouse.

It may or may not be the same problem. Next time it happens I'll try
capturing the relevant logs.

[Bug 1438938] [NEW] Add support for POWER8 NVL processor for ppc64el

2015-03-31 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

Please add upstream commit

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=ddee09c099c35074e50aaf9157efd22429d3acdf

To add support for that new processor variant. The cores are identical to
POWER8 so there is no difference
to the kernel to get things booted and installed. It adds the nvlink function
for which separate patches
will be submitted later, but at least with the above commit, the machines will
be able to boot.

Ok, you also need the fix for Bug 1431196 (backport of

You seem to only have the big endian kernels in there... Open Power is
essentially LE (and in fact that AST graphic chips doesn't have
functional endian swappers which means you'll get wrong colors on a
BE system but we don't support BE OSes on it anyway).

Any chance you can spin the ppc64el packages as well ?

[Bug 1420627] [NEW] powerpc: backport AST graphic driver updates for OpenPower

2015-02-10 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

The OpenPower machines such as the Tyan dev board use the ASpeed BMC which has
a built
in graphic controller. The driver for this doesn't work properly on PowerPC at
the moment,
this series of patches is a backport from upstream to fix that. It would be
nice to have this
in utopic kernel.

Each patch in this archive is a cherry-pick and identifies the original
upstream commit.

All except patch 1 cherry-pick cleanly. Patch 1 needed some hand applying due
to some
unrelated changes that went upstream since 3.16 but the fixup is trivial.

We can always merge these latter, but might make cherry-picking a bit
easier if done now. : )

There's a number of things that would be handy to have for OpenPower
support and the above is one of them :) I can make you a list, we would
want the AST driver as well for BMC graphics but there are dependencies
I think on a bunch of other DRM changes so it might be easier if I
cooked you a backport myself.

I'll look into that early next week.

But don't hold the i2c stuff on that, there are people waiting on it
so we can tell OpenPower vendors that they can just use a standard
ubuntu image for manufacturing and use the i2c interface to program the
VPDs without having to build/install custom kernel packages.

Cheers,
Ben.

Regarding trusty, I don't have a trusty machine at hand, if anybody
around does, check for the xscom nodes being present in
/sys/kernel/debug/powerpc/

[Bug 1395855] [NEW] Enable CONFIG_SCOM_DEBUGFS for ppc64el kernels

2014-11-24 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

Please enable CONFIG_SCOM_DEBUGFS for ppc64el kernels, this creates some
new files in debugfs that allow userspace (root only) to access the
P7/P8 chip internal XSCOM bus, which is needed for various
debug/diag/mfg tools. There should be no runtime impact on performance
or stability by just enabling that option.

[Bug 1333430] [NEW] Revert incorrect offb ppc64el fix

2014-06-23 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

This revert went into 3.16, it hasn't hit 3.13-stable yet (though it
will).

http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=68986c9f0f4552c34c248501eb0c690553866d6e

Note that with *current* powerkvm, this will cause the console colors to be
wrong (again), at least until
we release the service pack which will correctly fix the problem on KVM side.
If you don't apply the above
revert, then the colors will be wrong with the new powerkvm..

We have to do the fix on our side otherwise X won't work properly. Additionally
the hack that this reverts was never
going to work in a pure LE/LE environment so we have no choice but bite the
bullet and do the right fix.

[Bug 943090] [NEW] powerpc64 kernel lacks IBM vscsi driver

The kernel on the precise powerpc ISOs is lackingCONFIG_SCSI_IBMVSCSI, either

thus preventing installation on most IBM system P machines or inside qemu or

[Bug 739991] [NEW] Endian bug in lsusb

2011-03-22 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usbutils

There's an endian bug in the lsusb version used in Ubuntu. At the top of
the lsusb.c file you can read:

#if (__BYTE_ORDER == __LITTLE_ENDIAN)
  #define le16_to_cpu(x) (x)
#elif (__BYTE_ORDER == __BIG_ENDIAN)
  #define le16_to_cpu(x) bswap_16(x)
#else
  #error missing BYTE_ORDER
#endif

Which is then used whenever reading some 16-bit fields off descriptors.

This is incorrect. All the descriptor data structures are parsed by libusb
using usb_parse_descriptor() which
already converts the endian of 8-bit fields. Hence, all pre-parsed descriptors
coming into libusb should
-not- be swapped again.

Note that the upstream lsusb is even more funny, it does:

#define le16_to_cpu(x) libusb_cpu_to_le16(libusb_cpu_to_le16(x))

IE. It swaps -twice- which is stupid ... but probably works :-)

The right thing to do is to rip all of that out including the two call sites of
le16_to_cpu()
as it's all in native endian already when coming out of libusb.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10
Package: usbutils 0.87-4

[Bug 577804] [NEW] function with attribute((noreturn)) never called in cdebootstrap

2010-05-09 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc

cdebootstrap on x86_64 hangs whenever it tries to fork/exec a child
process. It appears that this is miscompiled:

  if (pid = 0)
  {
close (fds_status[0]);
close (fds_stdout[0]);
close (fds_stderr[0]);
  }

  if (pid == 0)
internal_di_exec_child (filename, argv, envp, pid, child_prepare_handler,
child_prepare_user_data, fds_status[1], fd_null, fds_stdout[1], fds_stderr[1]);

  close (fd_null);

strace shows that the child process gets to the close(fd_null) without
executing any of the statements inside internal_di_exec_child().

The later function is marked attribute((noreturn)). If I remove that
attribute, then things work properly.

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-06 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Allright, let's try to see more clearly before we got dig further.

First of all, the only valid tests are with either Andy test kernel or
2.6.31.5 since both have my fix.

Then, there's an additional problem that I've seen as well and not
debugged yet, which sometimes for me makes the modem not work the first
time it's plugged (or if plugged at boot). Yanking it out and back in
makes it work fine. This is a -different- issue that the one we've been
tracked and it has a simple workaround obviously.

So please, from now, report if and only if you have tested the bug fix
kernel -and- tested removing and re-inserting the modem and it still
doesn't work. At which point, I need logs. To MarcelID: Have you tried
the removal/insertion trick ? Does it help for you with a patched kernel
? If you have and it still doesn't work, then we have at least one set
of valid logs to study further and i'll send them to the USB maintainer.

Thanks !

seems that the proposed fix is not fully working for everybody?

Well, what you can do is

 - Test if the proposed fix (or 2.6.31.5) works for you, if yes, then
just wait since I expect Canonical to release that update soon

 - If not, please send the usbmon logs I've requested about 3 times so
we can actually track down what the other problem might be :-)

As to how to do that usbmon logging, it's very easy:

cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/usbmon/0u log_file.txt

And then plug the modem, wait about a minute for things to happen, and
ctrl-C the above command send us the log file (along with the dmesg
output snapshot -after- the log has been taken).

Cheers,
Ben.

2009-11-05 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
But do that kernel contain the proposed fix ? Or is this the current
stock Karmic kernel ? IE. AFAIK, Ubuntu hasn't released a kernel with
the patch so unless you are running Andy's build or 2.6.31.5 -or-
manually applied my patch and rebuilt, you are not running with the
proposed fix applied.

Have you tried with the 2.6.31.5 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.31.5/ as well ?

We basically need to figure out whether a -different- problem is
affecting E620 users or simply that people on this thread have been
confused as to what kernel contains the fix and what kernels don't

As I said multiple times already, the E220 bug (and possibly the E620

they aren't fixed by the existing patch in 2.6.31.5. Hence, you guys
should file a bug report on bugzilla.kernel.org and attach usbmon logs

[Bug 464088] [NEW] Buffer overflow in Idb__HDR_GetHeader() (with fix)

2009-10-29 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

This bug breaks some apps I need to use that rely on libMrm.so.3, they segfault
due to a buffer overflow on the stack

The bug is trivial. It's using an XtNumber (aka ARRAY_SIZE) instead of strlen()
to get the size
of a string declared as a char * ... FAIL :-)

The attached patch fixes it. Please apply. It's fixed in OpenMotif 2.3.x but
Ubuntu is still at 2.2.x
and the app I'm using requires 2.2.x anyways.

[Bug 446146] Re: Huawei E169 USB dongle not working with kernel 2.6.31-12.40

2009-10-28 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Well... there would be a way to fix all those regressions for release until a
proper fix is found
upstream which would be to revert the patch that went in 2.6.31.2 that
caused them all.

The result would be to go back to 2.6.31.1 state with the modem working but the
storage
side of the device not working, which isn't a big deal, since it's bugs in the
USB storage
implementation of the devices that seem to be causing this.

This is commit

I haven't had a chance to test 2.6.31.5 on my E169, will do so later
today, but it's possible that E220 suffers from a different bug (Huawei
seems to have a pretty crappy firmware).

I would suggest you guys file a kernel bugzilla entry on kernel.org,
CCing Alan Stern, and attach the usbmon output when plugging the device
(and let it go through a couple of reset cycles). Alan's pretty
responsive and found the problem with the E169 pretty quickly from my

2009-10-25 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Ok, so here's what I observed with 2.6.31.5 and my E169:

 - After boot, the first time I insert the E169, the SCSI part shows up but not
the modem
 - Unplug it and re-plug it, and it works

I'm not 100% sure yet what we have wrong that causes that behaviour, but it
seems to
be quite consistent. However, it's a lot less bad than what we had before.

The E220 may well be having an altogether different problem.

My latest patch was accepted and is now in gregkh tree, it should hit
the next stable release and Linus soon now, might be worth making sure
it's in the released kernel

According to the gcc documentation ( in particular,

before the outer function exits. I take it this functionality isn't

Well, it did look like a gcc bug to me indeed.

However, the test case here doesn't seem to break on fedora gcc 4.4.0 or
jaunty 4.3.3

I'm still putting back that karmic machine into shape and will then be
able to check what's up with the karmic gcc version.

2009-09-21 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Hrm, somebody is taking chances here.

Nested functions are evil and forbidden by ISO C standard.

I don't know what kind of black magic gcc is supposed to use to be able
to find the local variables of the declaration scope when the nested
function is called via a function pointer from outside. I suppose it
will have to create some kind of trampoline on the stack, which means
you lose non-exec stack capability for your program.

It may still be a bug that it doesn't work on ppc with some
optimisations, but it's really not proper C in the first place.

2008-05-10 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
The patch should do the trick without needing to use a customer flavour of the
kernel.
I do recommend lowering the size of the PS3 FB though that can be done in a
common
kernel.

I'm having paulus review the patch closely and send it to linus for .26. Once
that's done
I'll look into backporting it to .25.x stable and .24.x stable but you can
just stick it
in your package in the meantime.

[Bug 221626] [NEW] initscripts fails configure on ps3 install

2008-04-24 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

Today's hardy alternate CD install for PS3 fails to install due to a
failure to configure the initscripts package.

The failure root cause is that it tries to mount spufs on /spu but that
filesystem is not part of whatever
comes with the kernel on that installer CD.

I believe the problem is two fold here:

 - First, I suspect it might be a good idea to have the spufs module present
and loaded on the
installer kernel

 - Second, even without that, the initscripts package should not fail
configuration if it can't mount spufs,
there is nothing fatal about that especially for the distro install.

Finally, I found it hard to fix it up from a console because after I hacked
the postinst script to not attempt
the mount, I could configure the package manually fine. But the installer GUI
still fails, because it retries
I suppose dpkg --configure package which stupidly -fails- if the package is
already configured ! (it's a
bit lame). Maybe the installer should also be made a bit more smart in that
area.

[Bug 221646] [NEW] CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y is a PS3 killer

2008-04-24 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

The hard powerpc64 kernel is having serious trouble on PS3. Basically, I
have only about 88M of memory available after boot which makes it pretty
much unuseable.

The main reason for that is CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y. This feature has been
designed for larger memory machines such as G5s or pSeries and triggers
a worst-case scenario on the PS3 in part due to how memory is laid out
by the hypervisor.

It causes the kernel to use a crapload of memory for the memory map and
still fail to add the necessary bit to be able to register the
additional memory (the PS3 memory is split in 128M boot RAM and some
additional memory given to linux by the HV later during boot).

I might be able to improve the situation in the kernel but not right now
and it might not make it before .26 or .27 so ubuntu should probably
disable that option at least for PS3 kernels. I know PS3 uses the same
kernel builds as other ppc64 which can be an issue, but basically, it's
unuseable with that option set.

correction... it boots, but after it switches to ncurses, I don't have any text
displayed. I see the blue background,
I see the red of the active button, I see the blinking cursor in console mode,
but it generally acts as if the
console font had been turned to ... nothing. I do see the text before it gets

I haven't tried live as it clearly says it can't install from live due

quite exercized in ways that I suspect a lot of users don't, which
would explain why this didnt' show up on x86.

I'll torture the machine see if I can get that to happen again, and
maybe find out a repro-case.

[Bug 205384] [NEW] [hardy] installer failure with existing RAID+LVM setup

2008-03-22 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

The existing setup is:

Quad G5, two SATA disks, various partitions (/boot etc...) directly there, one
big
MD partition on each drive. Togegher, those form a RAID0. That RAID0 is then
setup as an LVM PV into with 4 logical volumes (including root, /home, etc..)

I busted the gutsy install there (bad manipulation on my part) so I'm trying to
install
Hardy using an alternate iso snapshot as of yesterday (Mars 22, 2008).

When I do configure RAID, then just Finish, it detects the MD properly and
shows
it's LVM PV.

When I do configure LVM, it discovers all the LVs, I can then go back and see
all my
logical volumes in the list.

I set their filesystem and mount points, so far so good, then I do finish
partitionning,
at which points things go bonkers:

 - First it says it will have to write the RAID 0 partition map to disk
(despite the fact
that I didn't change a thing to do).

 - Then it complains that the kernel ioctl failed (invalid argument iirc) and
I'll have to
reboot. I choose continue as the partition map hasn't changed, so it should
all be
fine.

 - Nothing happens. The installer screen is empty and nothing happens

Now if I try to go to the other VT to get some logs etc... I get nothing there,
just black
screen on a black background. The cusor blinks fine and move, but it looks like
somewhat
the installer is setting the text color of the other console as black on black !

It -seems- that it works the very first time I switch VT and only gets in that
black/black
state on subsequent switches, thus I will try to use that to see if I can get
some logs
though it might be useful to guide me (that is tell me where to look for useful
info).

[Bug 205384] Re: [hardy] installer failure with existing RAID+LVM setup

2008-03-22 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Ok so in the nothing happens state, in fact, if you wait long enough (that is
something like 10mn or more),
it ends up continuing the install.

So it's not broken, just weirdly very very slow at this stage.

So you can downgrade the bug to cosmetic, I would suggest fixing these:

 - It should be smarter at figuring out that it doesn't need to write back the
RAID partition
map when you didn't change it, the error message is confusing if not scary.

 - It should have some progress message or at least some please wait right
after it
so people know it's not actually dead (currently, it's a blank/red screen with
no text)

[Bug 204937] [NEW] [hardy] kernel oops triggered by trackerd

2008-03-21 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

shortly after updating this machine to hardy (thus trackerd went mad indexing
things),
I saw the oops below in my kernel log.

Machine is a Quad G5 PowerMac (64 bits powerpc kernel), though the problem
doesn't
seem to be in some powerpc specific area.

It -could- have been related to successive failures at using a USB DVB adapter
(the
driver may have been corrupting kernel memory) though unlikely.

[Bug 189114] [NEW] (hardy) powerpc installer lacks ide-pmac driver

2008-02-04 Thread Benjamin Herrenschmidt
Public bug reported:

The current hardy snapshot ISOs cannot be used to install on any powermac as the
ide-pmac driver is missing from the initrd, thus it won't find the CD-ROM.

There is currently no libata driver for the Apple legacy PATA IDE interfaces,
so that driver
is always needed.
