+5 I agree. This is very annoying for Firefox users on KDE. I just spent an hour searching for a Firefox b5 theme that would make Firefox less ugly. Note I'm not using KDE4 (I'm 3.5.9 -- I just upgraded to hardy). I've attached a screenshot that shows why it's so ugly. The bottom of the tab bar is a little screwy and the spacing isn't correct. [Bug 211471] [NEW] Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager This is similar to bug #185209 in that I've seen this happen on this box and fixed it by deleting some of the entries in ~/.gnome2. When I'm at home my computer works just fine on my WiFi access. My access is a WPA 802.11G point. When at work I tried connecting to a WPA2 network and a WEP network and both crashed nm-applet or at least I assume that it was nm-applet that was crashing but it seemed to take gnome-panel with it and I think nautilus as well as I was unable to click on icons on the desktop. I was still spin the desktop and all that fun stuff using compiz though. I also noted this same problem when connecting to a wired network at the same location. After this rebooting would still present me with a gnome- applet that was dead. However my system monitor applet seemed to never die. Just the Applications/Places/System and all of the launcher icons. Things seemed to die after clicking on an icon but it was always the first icon after successful connection to an other network. Not sure why it works so well here at home but its a NO GO at work. Deleting the .gnome2 folder in my home was the only way to get the panel back after causing one of these crashes. This is under 8.04 Beta and the nm-applet I'm running is 0.6.6. This install of 8.04 was an upgrade from Gutsy and the gutsy install worked perfectly! The network card is an ipw2200. It was suggested that I run nm-applet in a terminal and look at what it says when this happens.. So I did this and posted another post that read: BEGIN CUT FROM TERMINAL ** Message: info Forcing device '/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/eth1' ** (nm-applet:9168): CRITICAL **: nm_gconf_wso_set_key: assertion `key != NULL' failed ** (nm-applet:9168): WARNING **: WARN real_write_secrets_cb(): Error saving secret for wireless network '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' in keyring: 5 END CUT FROM TERMINAL At this point in time clicking any of the launcher applets in the gnome panel (such as evolution or firefox) causes the system to pretty much go down. After that hovering over a panel icon will not allow it to illuminate. Hovering over the desktop icons does cause them to illuminate still (but not always) and they won't open. However Compiz still seems to be very alive and pidgin seems to be working just fine and is actually connected to the net. Connecting from somewhere else makes pidgin disconnect on the laptop and show all the messages that it should. After this in order to reboot I have to do a ctrl+alt+F1 and then reboot from there... Whoa.. Ok take that back.. The icons on the desktop DO open but they take FOREVER! Like minutes. I just opened up a folder and a few minutes later it opened the folder in nautilus then immediately turned grey. Its probably just still operating very slowly... Hitting Ctrl+c in the terminal that was running nm-applet doesn't seem to bring it back. I have a thread where I've been posting anything new that happens related to this bug here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4634642#post4634642 Now that I have this as well I'll start posting any updates to here. ** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211471] Re: Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang
If I reboot with out deleting things in the ~/.gnome2 folder when it auto connects the gnome-panel doesn't load at all. It just looks like a white band. But I *DO* get connected to the network and my pidgin which auto loads *IS* able to sign onto the chat networks. I get a message box titled error but it says nothing in it at all. Not sure if this is related or not as I've never seen it before but it just popped up while typing this. I'm still able to load videos off of the desktop but trying to open a folder results in another box that just says Error in the title bar but has no text in the window portion. -- Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 211471] Re: Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang
Not sure if it adds much to the conversation but after deleting just the file in the keyrings dir under .gnome2 upon boot I was presented with a window asking for the network key. While this prompt was there the gnome-panel was white. After canceling out of this prompt the gnome- panel loaded. Then I simply plugged in an ethernet cable and clicked an icon on the panel and it didn't load. The panel was dead. Then I ctrl+alt+f1ed and killed nm-applet from the console. Then alt+f7 brought me back to X. The panel was empty except for the trey icons and the system monitor. ie the menus launcher and clock were all empty. After waiting just a couple of seconds the panel lit back up and all of the buttons that I'd clicked on finally opened. I closed them and typed nm-applet into a console and nm-applet came back. However trying to connect to an access point again after that kills things yet again.. (at least its consistent... :)) -- Connecting to other networks causes gnome-panel to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211471 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 211642] [NEW] Wubi installation on HP Pavilion dv6000
Public bug reported: After mounting both the 32bit and 64bit ISO's (Hardy Heron 8.04 beta) on a HP Pavilion dv6000 and trying to install via umenu.exe (Install Inside Windows) and going through the installation process, I encountered the following problems: I could not get past the Migrate Documents and Settings dialog, regardless of whether I checked or unchecked my user's settings. The Next button simply did not appear, so I was forced to quit. Then when I tried the menu option to Install via what I guess was the Live Boot Ubuntu that subsequently appeared, I first had a minor problem of not being able to set a timezone different than a U.S. one (I couldn't select a region) and then had error messages (as I recall) related to setting up the partition ext3 (I tried a 15 GB partition), and there was also a warning about executing a file which didn't seem to make a difference whether I ignored it or ran it (if I clicked Run it gave an error). I could also not get through the partitions that subsequently appeared without getting errors too. When I did the Hardware testing via the system pull-down, the dialog also hanged upon going through the mouse testing (though I could move the mouse, and had been clicking buttons, at that stage, I couldn't click the button to continue as it just hanged). I'm really very eager to start using Ubuntu if the installation process can work with my system. Thank you. Re: [Bug 210139] Re: In Save as once scrolled down the list of format types you can't scroll back up
I was using writer and its not all that low of a res. Its 1440X1050. Right now my system is in the middle of a rebuild or I'd try it again but in the event that its still there for me I'll be more specific about where I have it in the screen and what not and take some screen captures if I can. Even with it doing what it was its a VERY minor thing as simply clicking out of the menu and opening it again moves me back toward the top. [Bug 190588] [NEW] After upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, Gutsy boot drops to initramfs
Public bug reported: I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, but there were numerous errors during the upgrade process. Eventually, I was able to recover the upgrade via the standard: apt-get --configure -a apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade However, any boot to kernel 2.6.22-14 would display the ubuntu splash screen, show the progress bar for a few seconds and then drop back to the initramfs / ash prompt. [Bug 148232] Re: Gutsy Beta: Ethernet interface (Intel PRO/1000) present but unusable after update
Is this still an issue for you? I am experiencing very similar symptoms (likely the same cause) with my Intel card. Same messages in /var/log/messages. The link just goes up/down constantly. I can trace it going up and down with repeated calls to ethtool eth0 and watching the Link detected line cycle from yes to no with varying intervals. If I force 10 Mbps and turn auto-negotiation off (ethtool -s eth0 speed 10 duplex full autoneg off), the link becomes stable. But 10 Mbps on a 100 Mbps switch is not good enough. The strange thing is it was working fine for me for a while before suddenly running into this problem. Since then, I haven't been able to get a stable network connection. I booted the Dapper live CD and the same problem exists. I don't think this is unique to Gutsy. Hmmm, I just found that if I resize the xdvi window then the dvi file is suddenly displayed and all is well. The initial problem seems to occur regardless of the initial window geometry, and is fixed by resizing. Just moving the window does not do the trick. Interestingly, if I click on the window without resizing, the magnifying glass feature of xdvi does work to display a portion of the page magnified, even though the page itself is not displayed. -- xdvi fails to work with compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157199 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 155199] Re: cannot install emacs in gutsy
I had the same problem. It seems that the emacsen-common package was refusing to install two of its files (/etc/emacs/site-start.el and /etc/emacs/site-start.d/00debian-vars.el) and this caused the byte- compilation of .el files to fail. I was able to fix this by first installing the emacsen-common package, then using dpkg-deb to extract the files from the deb archive (dpkg-deb -X /var/cache/apt/archives /emacsen-common_1.4.17_all.deb emacsen-common_1.4.17_all) and then copying the missing files by hand into /etc/emacs. After that installation of the emacs package installed emacs22 without a hitch. Prior to discovering this problem, I had removed all my emacs packages in an effort to get a clean install of emacs22 (I had been running emacs-snapshot and I think that emacs21 was also installed). In the process it seemed that there were a lot of emacs-snapshot and emacs21 related things around, and I had deleted some of them by hand, including /etc/emacs and various links in /usr/bin and /etc/alternatives. I don't know if this could cause reinstallation of emacs fail, but I thought that I should mention it just in case. I note that now I have links /usr/bin/emacs22 and /etc/alternatives/emacs22 and a few others, but no /usr/bin/emacs or /etc/alternatives/emacs. Well, the keyring stores all kinds of useful information, like WPA/WEP keys, ssh key passphrases, etc.. Much of this is well documented in a duplicate of this bug, #106410 (I hadn't found this bug listing when I filed it): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.20/+bug/106410 In addition to output from lspci and lshal, it has before/after suspend/resume logs of dmesg, lsmod, and lsusb. Should be useful for debugging. Perhaps the most interesting point is that after resume, the hub itself doesn't seem to be dead (according to lsusb), yet the devices that are plugged into it just don't get re-registered. Adjusting /etc/default/acpi-support to unload/load usb modules for the suspend/resume does get rid of the dmesg lines saying usb usb1: root hub lost power or was reset, but the behavior doesn't change, nor does what lsusb reports. [Bug 51991] Re: Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. Can be killed by remote terminal.
I ditched Beryl because it's a little too unstable for my liking at this time, especially with dual displays. Back to getting frequent hangs in X. I ran gdb and did a couple back traces: (gdb) bt #0 0x0809c8d4 in DeletePassiveGrabFromList () #1 0x08092cc5 in ProcUngrabButton () #2 0x08142531 in ?? () #3 0x0858c858 in ?? () #4 0x0858c858 in ?? () #5 0x0858c858 in ?? () #6 0xbfa96808 in ?? () #7 0x081c7fa8 in ?? () #8 0x in ?? () (gdb) cont (gdb) bt #0 0x0809c33e in ?? () #7 0xbfa96808 in ?? () #8 0x081c7fa8 in ?? () #9 0x in ?? () I did this many times, and each trace showed roughly one of the two above stacks. This never happens when the system is in use. Occasionally, when I sit down at the system, the cpu is fluctuating in usage for no reason (I have a cpu monitor on my desktop so I notice this right away). For example, it will be constant 25%, 0%, 25%, 0%, etc. Once I start using the system, this behaviour usually goes away and X calms down and returns to normal with no noticeable usage. No freeze here. The unrecoverable hanging usually occurs after I lock the system. In KDE, I have the habit of locking it whenever I leave the system for an extended period of time (don't ask me why). At this point, I have to switch to a terminal and kill X. I want to make it clear that this is not always the case -- sometimes the lockup occurs without the session locked when I've left the computer alone for a while (usually many hours). The dmesg showed no signs of NVRM: Xid messages as suggested above when X is going crazy. When it is frozen and X is eating the cpu, I can see all the windows I had running fine, but interestingly, none of them have any window decorations -- they're all gone. The mouse moves fine but I can't click on anything or use the keyboard, except to switch terminals. Anything else I can try? I'm thinking about starting to look at ATI cards as this is awfully annoying. -- Xorg process freezes, uses 100% of CPU. [Bug 106410] Re: Suspend/Resume breaks onboard USB in Feisty
Some progress, but no solution yet. I tried to make a workaround by manually adjusting /etc/default/acpi- support. I have managed to get rid of the root hub lost power or was reset error messages in dmesg, but so far the devices themselves don't work as the USB hubs themselves still seem to be dead. I think this is the most likely way to fix this problem, unless some ubuntu dev takes a look at this. It really should just work -- It's not a problem in Fedora, for example. The changes I've tried so far: # Add modules to this list to have them removed before suspend and reloaded # on resume. An example would be MODULES=em8300 yenta_socket # # Note that network cards and USB controllers will automatically be unloaded # unless they're listed in MODULES_WHITELIST #MODULES= #MODULES=usbhid hid usblp ehci_hcd ohci_hcd uhci_hcd usbcore MODULES=uhci_hcd ehci_hcd ohci_hcd I'm hoping that finding the correct combination of modules/combination/(order?) will make this work. I'm also attaching my latest dmesg output. Maybe someone else will find the correct setting. ** Attachment added: dmesg.txt http://librarian.launchpad.net/7556869/dmesg.txt -- Suspend/Resume breaks onboard USB in Feisty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/106410 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Oh, the point of the above lsusb info is that the hub itself doesn't seem to be dead, just that the device that is plugged into it (the MS Intellimouse) doesn't get re-registered (btw, the device plugged into USB hub 005 is an MS keyboard).
