Re: [Bug 1232454] Re: Often automatic suspend dialog when I unlock

2013-11-18 Thread Greg Michalec
It appears based on the gnome bug report
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=712176) that the dialog is
meant to be removed upon resuming. to quote:

I see that the notification is getting removed when resuming already,
so it's probably something to do with Ubuntu's non-use of systemd/logind.

On 11/18/2013 11:36 AM, GwaiTsi wrote:

i could think of a few profanities to describe this behavior and the genius
 who thought to add it,
but i'm sure it was meant with the best intent.

Scott -
I use AIM for work as well. I've installed pidgin (an alternate IM
client) so I can still communicate until this bug is resolved.

it. Like the others above, the login details screen is blank.

Wish I hadn't upgraded my work computer now. I use IM extensively to

[Bug 1159411] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in empathy_account_widget_apply_and_log_in()

2013-04-30 Thread Greg Michalec
I tested this on a live cd, and was able to create a new yahoo account
in Online Accounts. It would seem then that the problem is related to
having upgraded my system versus doing a fresh install. However, since
the problem occurs even under the guest accounts, the issue must not be
anything in my user-level configuration - it is system-wide. I'm pretty
confused though, as I have done a apt-get remove --purge and reinstall
of every package I thought relevant. I'm out of ideas as to how to track
this down. I'm also not sure if this is even the same bug, as I'm not
experiencing a crash anymore.

[Bug 1159411] Re: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in empathy_account_widget_apply_and_log_in()

2013-04-24 Thread Greg Michalec
As of now (24-4-13), it seems as though the online accounts dialogue no
longer is crashing. However, I am still unable to create or edit Yahoo
or AIM accounts. I have tested doing a purge and reinstall of empathy
and all telepathy packages, and under the guest account. The dialogue
with Please enter your account details appears, with cancel and done
buttons, but no fields for actually entering any details ever appears.
This also occurs *sometimes* for Jabber accounts. Let me know if there
are any additional details I can provide.

[Bug 904569] Re: Linux 3.0.0-15-generic-pae causes laptops to fail to resume from suspend (Dell XPS 1645, Sony Vaio VPCF1390)

2011-12-18 Thread Greg Michalec
@Ronan,
I had the same issue - I ended up downloading the deb directly from here:
http://ddebs.ubuntu.com/pool/main/l/linux/ (make sure to get the correct one
for your kernel). Also, be warned that the deb is ~600 megs, and unpacks to
over 2GB. I had to symlink /usr/lib/debug/lib/ to a directory on my /home
partition to have room for it.
It seems unlikely that you'll get different results than I did, but probably
worth testing!

I can confirm this bug. I tested by booting into recovery mode,
remounting drive r/w, and running pm-suspend from console. I tested the

[Bug 834878] Re: Unity greeter password field uses old-fashioned asterisks

Most other password dialogs I've seen in Ubuntu - 'lock screen' login,
network passwords, passwords for empathy, even password dialogs in

correctly, i.e. it immediately seemed inconsistent. So, my $.02 is to

[Bug 840208] [NEW] No Capslock indicator on password field

2011-09-03 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

(This is reported against Oneric Beta 1). In previous versions of
Ubuntu, a warning would display if you had capslock enabled while
entering a password. This feature seems to be missing in lightdm (as
well as the screen locking mechanism, which may be the same). This
feature is particularly useful for those of use who have a combination
of 1) fat fingers and 2) stupid dell laptops that do not have a capslock
status led. Obviously, this is a feature request, and y'all are swamped
I'm sure, but it would be great if we could bring this feature back.
Thanks!

[Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org

2011-09-03 Thread Greg Michalec
Unfortunately, I'm still seeing this issue in Oneric Beta 1.
Steps to reproduce:
1) log in to guest session
2) Enable Desktop Sharing
3) Open Remote Desktop Viewer
4) Open VNC connection to localhost:5900

You'll see the initial screen, and the mouse will move around, but no
screen updates are made. If you repeat the steps abovem , but starting
the guest session in 'Ubuntu 2D' mode, it will work as expected.

Obviously there is something incompatible between the VNC server and
desktop compositing, but since Vino, Vinaigre, and Compiz are now all
part of the default Ubuntu experience, it seems that the current
situation will cause nothing but frustration for new users. Even if
there is no programmatic solution, can't there be some sort of
indication of why this won't work, or a best way to work around - i.e.
maybe a notification in the Desktop Sharing preferences tool warning
that sharing will not work unless you restart to a 2d session (if this
is indeed the best/easiest solution).

[Bug 839767] [NEW] Saved wireless networks/VPNs unavailable after Oneric upgrade

Public bug reported:

I just upgraded to Oneric (via update-manager -d), and now my saved
network passwords and vpns are no long available. I can connect to
wireless networks and re-enter passwords, and they persist (they show up

strange is that is see the old connections and vpns in gconf-editor

[Bug 674138] Re: Global appmenu breaks sloppy focus

2011-08-26 Thread Greg Michalec
Another option (that i don't think would be too intrusive) would be to
temporarily disable focus-follows-mouse while holding a key (eg. ALT).
So if you needed to access a menu for a particular app, you could just
hold down ALT while you move you mouse to the menu bar and it would
ignore any other window you tracked over. ALT seems like a logical
choice since it activates the menus anyway, and I find myself needing to
access the menus for non-fullscreen apps rare enough that holding down a
key wouldn't seem that much of a pain.

[Bug 761432] [NEW] excessive swap (kswapd) usage on resume - caused by fglrx?

2011-04-15 Thread Greg Michalec
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 391628 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391628

Public bug reported:

This bug still persists with me using most recent 11.04 beta. I've noted
that the problem only seems to occur when some amount of swap is in use
when I resume - i.e. if I sleep soon after a reboot, when the memory
usage is low, then my resumes are nice and snappy. However, after a few
days of firefox-ing, where swap usage gets up to around 1 gig, then
resumes are excruciating. I find it quickest to drop to a console and
sudo swapoff -a - It seems to be faster to wait for the swap to de-
allocate rather than wait for whatever is causing it to thrash to
complete. I've checked my syslog, and I see a similar Call Trace to what
others have posted. I'll attach the changelog, where you can see 3
successful resumes, and the 4th one (at Apr 14th 22:45:30) having the
call trace. Interestingly, the syslog trace reports that I was only
using ~ 31 megs of my 4 GB swap, but I'm certain when I disabled it, it
was using at least 1.5 GB. Please let me know if there's anything else
that I can report - this is definitely my #1 annoying Ubuntu bug.

Eesh - i tried to use ubuntu-bug to attach information, but could not
for the life of me prevent it from creating a new bug. So, for more
details about my system, see bug #761432.

[Bug 459012] Re: [107790.197026] Kernel oops WARNING in iwlcore

2009-12-22 Thread Greg Michalec
I am getting a similar issue. My wireless will stop working (connected,
but no transfer) from time to time, and a few times it has resulted in a
system hang. It seems to primarily happen when I am downloading torrents
with deluge. I am using an Intel iwl3945 (0c:00.0 Network controller:

[Bug 297385] Re: iwl3945 sometimes fails to resume after suspend

2009-10-15 Thread Greg Michalec
Hi -
I'm running current Karmic 9.10 beta (2.6.31-14-generic), and am experiencing
this problem. What's odd is that I had thought this issue had gone away in
Jaunty, but upon doing a fresh install of karmic beta, it's back. It seems I
have a 50/50 chance of having the iwl3945 come back upon resume. I've compared
syslogs of a successful wakeup vs. a failed one, and the difference seems to
occur here:

Here is the failed entry:

just an update -
I've installed karmic koala beta, and this problem still persists. However, I

[Bug 297385] Re: iwl3945 sometimes fails to resume after suspend

2009-05-01 Thread Greg Michalec
I am experiencing a very similar, if not the same, problem. I'm running
the latest Jaunty kernel (2.6.28-11-generic). Occasionally, after
resuming from suspend-to-ram, my internal iw3945 nic will not respond -
the wlan0 device does not exist. The problem persists after removing and
re-inserting the iwl3945 module. Here are the relevent messages from
dmesg:

[123713.595261] iwl3945: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection

slightly different from what's posted above, but the symptoms are the
same. The only way I can figure out to re-enable the wireless is to
reboot.

Let me know if there is additional info that can be provided.

Thanks!

[Bug 355474] Re: cpuinfo_max_freq stuck at 800MHz

2009-04-20 Thread Greg Michalec
Marking as invalid. After looking into this further, it seems that this
is a problem with something in the BIOS. Apparently Dell has something
in the AC Adapters that verify them as 'official', and if they are not,
then the cpu gets locked to the lowest frequency (and the battery won't
charge!) I must have had a faulty connection, which is why the problem
was intermittent. I switched AC adapters and things seem to behave more
normally.

[Bug 363135] [NEW] Nvidia driver detects VRAM incorrectly

2009-04-17 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

I have a GeForce 8400M GS with 128MB of video memory. (Windows sees it
as 128, and my purchase order from dell lists it as 128). However, the
NVIDIA X Server Settings applet detects it as having 256 MB. Also, in
the Xorg.0.log file contains the line Memory: 262144 kBytes.

Most things seem to function normally, except sometimes when I have many
windows open, windows will refuse to redraw themselves until I close
some windows and resize the window in question. I have a feeling this
bug is related to the incorrect vram detection.

I'm assuming this is a bug in the proprietary driver, and nothing can be
done about it, but I thought I'd try reporting it nonetheless.

[Bug 355474] [NEW] cpuinfo_max_freq stuck at 800MHz

2009-04-05 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cpufrequtils

I'm not sure if this is the right package to file this bug with, but here's the
problem:
I've noticed that after unplugging, then replugging my laptop back in, the cpu
frequency will be stuck at 800Mhz. Occasionally, plugging and replugging it a
few times will resolve the problem, but not always.
I've tried using cpufreq-set, as well as 'echo -n 2201000 scaling_max_freq',
but the value of scaling_max_freq continues to be stuck at 80. I definitely
don't remember having this problem before upgrading to jaunty.
I'm also confused as to why the cpufreq is being altered when I unplug in the
first place. As far as I know, I don't have anything configured to do this.

Please let me know if there's anything additional info I can provide.
Thank you.

Re: [Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-02-14 Thread Greg Michalec
OK - I've got some good news and some bad news. The good new is that I
created a usb key of Jaunty alpha 4 to test, and as far as I could tell,
the problem did not occur. My wireless connection did drop out
periodically, but that actually *did* seem like a driver issue (when it
died, it went completely out, and it was intermittent. You could set
your watch by the problem I'm having in intrepid.)
The bad news is that, in the interest of science, I installed the latest
jaunty packages of network-manager, network-manager-gnome,
wpasupplicant, and a handful of other packages I needed to satisfy
dependencies on my intrepid setup. Unfortunately, the problem seems to
still occur. I even did remove --purge on the old packages before
installing the new ones.
In other news, I check my friend's setup, and she has the same problem,
but she is using the broadcom wl driver (i'm using intel iwl3945), and
her setup was a fresh intrepid install from 2 months ago.

So, this is really confusing - the fact that I'm running most of the
jaunty software makes it seem like a driver issue, but the problem
occurs across drivers. Could it be a bug further down in the kernel
wireless stack? Any other ideas on how to debug this?

Here's the list of packages I updated:
libgnome-keyring0_2.25.90-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
libnss3-1d_3.12.2~rc1-0ubuntu2_i386.deb

[Bug 291760] Re: network-manager roams to (none) ((none))

2009-02-13 Thread Greg Michalec
Just a sanity check to see if this is actually a problem with the access
point - I'm using a linksys wrt110 router running firmware v1.0.02 which
has given me grief in other ways, so I wouldn't be surprised if this
problem is its fault as well. I'm assuming if other people are using
this router, I'll see a stream of 'ah-ha!' replies. It would also
explain why every other intrepid user isn't being driven crazy for six
seconds every two minutes like I am. (Note - I've installed the latest
linux-backports-modules, and the problem persists)

2009-02-04 Thread Greg Michalec
I have a very similar problem, but I'm using the intel iwl3945 drivers.
So, maybe it isn't a driver issue? I also don't remember having this

regularity - about every 2 minutes it roams, and reconnects 6 seconds
later.

I'm running latest Intrepid, with backports and proposed enabled.
I'm attaching my syslog, but here's a snapshot of the relevant portion:

[Bug 134415] Re: Unable to disable field shadings

2008-04-07 Thread Greg Michalec
I confirm that this bug appears to be fixed, using hardy openoffice.org
1:2.4.0-3ubuntu1. Bullets seem to be no longer considered 'fields', but
if you open a new text doc, insert-field-date, the date will have a
gray background. Toggling View-Field Shadings off causes the gray
background to disappear, as is expected. Additionally, field shadings do
not appear in 'Page Preview' mode, regardless of the state of
view-field shadings. Thanks!

[Bug 213700] [NEW] X.org + compiz crashes on nautilus file drag

2008-04-07 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

This is a wierd, nasty bug in Hardy Heron. The relevant packages i'm using are:
compiz 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu2, xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu7, nautilus 2.22.0-0ubuntu3, and
nvidia 169.12+2.6.24.12-15.33.
When I open a folder from my desktop using nautilus, and try to drag it to the
desktop, the mouse moves a little, then the system hangs for a second or two
(mouse becomes unresponsive), then X crashes. When I set visual effects to
'None' (i.e. disable compiz), file dragging works correctly. I'm not sure if
this is an X bug or a compiz bug, but since it doesn't occur without compiz,
i'm filing it here.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Make sure 'Visual Effects' in System-Preferences-Appearance is set to
something other than 'None'
2) Open a folder from you desktop
3) Attempt to drag a file from that folder onto the desktop - Crash!

Expected behavior: no crash.

I just checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old, and noticed this at the end:

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80c780e]
1: [0xb7f26420]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

This may be related to Bug #184651 . I'm attaching xorg.conf - not sure
what else to include.

[Bug 207002] [NEW] pm-utils looks for s2disk in the wrong place

2008-03-26 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

In /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions, there is a line specifying
S2DISK_BIN=/usr/sbin/s2disk. However, the uswsusp package install s2disk to
'/sbin/s2disk'. Thus, under the current configuration, it's impossible to use
uswsusp. I've tested this out - if I leave /usr/lib/pm-utils/functions alone,
selecting hibernate from the gnome menu uses the normal hibernate method, which
fails on my laptop. However, if I change the path to s2disk in
/usr/lib/pm-utils/functions, hibernation uses uswsusp, which works correctly.
I'm using latest hardy (pm-utils_0.99.2-3ubuntu and uswsusp_0.6~cvs2007061)

[Bug 200887] [NEW] Can't enter Administrative Password

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vinagre

Using latest Hardy Heron (vinagre 0.4.92-1), I'm unable to enter
adminstrative passwords in the remote machine (in this case, running
Gutsy Gibbon and vino 2.20.0-0ubuntu1). The password dialog appears, but
nothing is entered in the dialog box when I type.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Connect to a remote Ubuntu machine using Vinagre
2) Open Update Manager
3) Click Check
4) When the Enter your password to perform administrative tasks dialog
appears, try typing into the box. Nothing happens. Enter does not submit the

[Bug 190475] Re: iwl3945 produces a lot of error messages in syslog

2008-03-07 Thread Greg Michalec
This seems odd - after poking around the web, I found this link:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg29450.html
It's a patch that only logs these errors when CONFIG_MAC80211_DEBUG is enabled.
I checked the kernel source (in
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.24/net/mac80211/wpa.c) and verified that the patch is
indeed applied to the source - the ifdef statements are there. However, when I
look in /boot/config-2.6.24-8-generic to check the kernel config, I see #
CONFIG_MAC80211_DEBUG is not set. The only place the string TKIP decrypt
failed occurs in the kernel tree is within that ifdef in wpa.c, but according
to the kernel config, the variable is not set, so the logging shouldn't occur.
Unless I'm missing something with the way ubuntu kernel builds work? Maybe
there's a patch that removes the ifdefs?

I could be way off base - just trying to help..

[Bug 133325] Re: Broken packages result in meaningless error message

2008-02-27 Thread Greg Michalec
Hi -
I'm using latest Hardy, and this error message is still present. Update-manager
does detect the broken packages correctly, and does display an error message.
The bug is that the error message: You have 2 broken packages on your system!
Use the Broken filter to locate them. does not apply to update-manager. I
believe it is referring to synaptic. To a new user, this is not very helpful,
and probably confusing. Steps to reproduce:
1) Somehow get a broken package setup (not too hard for those of us living on
the edge)
2) Open update-manager
3) Press check, and wait for update to finish
4) See error message
5) Close error message
6) Think where the heck is the 'broken' filter?

I agree with the original reporter's suggestion for a proper error message.
I'm attaching a screenshot.

[Bug 180986] Hard drive will not stay in standby mode

2008-01-07 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hdparm

Details:
I just got a new SATA hard drive and moved all my stuff to it, but I'm keeping
my old PATA around for backups, media, etc. However, compared to the new one,
it is noisy! I'd like for it to stay asleep/spun down as much as possible, but
I'm having problems making it do so. When I issue the command hdparm -y
/dev/sda it spins down, but it inevitably spins back up again after anywhere
from 5 to 60 seconds. Also, 'hdparm -S 1 /dev/sda' seems to have no effect.

I figured that there was some application polling the data off the
drive, so I tried unmounting its partitions. Even with no unmounted
partitions, the drive still continues to spin up! I know i've done this
in the past with older linux's. Maybe something to do with the new
libata driver?

Thanks

[Bug 73799] Re: Crash when I try autocomplete table names

However, I built the package from svn checkout (rev 474) and auto-

[Bug 134415] Unable to disable field shadings

2007-08-23 Thread Greg Michalec
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org2

In openoffice.org writer (version 1:2.3.0~oog680m1-1ubuntu3), it seems
impossible to disable the grey background that occurs behind computed fields
(i.e. Outline Numbering, Bullets, Page Counts, etc.( According to the Help, it
should be possible to view the document without these shadings by:
a) Toggling 'View Field Shadings' (View-Field Shadings or CTRL-F8)
b) View the document in 'Page Preview' Mode (File-Page Preview)
Currently neither of these options seem to disable the shading.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a new document in OpenOffice Writer.
2. Toggle Bullets on from the bullets button on the toolbar
3. Type several lines of text - notice the grey shading beneath the bullet
characters

[Bug 23545] Re: No more X on resume after hibernate

2007-01-25 Thread Greg Michalec
I have this same problem. I have a ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 (RV350) and an
AMD Athlon64 3000+ cpu. I've tried both the radeon and fglrx drivers and
neither seem to work - it's the same scenario as above: when I hit hibernate,
the machine seems to shut down fine, starts back up, but when it gets to X it
hangs, with a garbled screen similar to this:
http://beework.isgreat.org/var/log/screenshot.JPG
(from bug #72417, which may be a duplicate).

Also, if I hibernate from the console, it resumes fine, but once I
switch back to X, i get a screen like above and the system is hung.

I'm not sure what further steps to take to debug this.

Thanks.
