[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2010-10-10 Thread John Dickson
@mättu (#183): I used:
alps_ec_write(psmouse, 0x0005, 0x07)
to disable the tapping completely (this also disables the corner tap as a right
click).

One of the earlier patches (from @Andrew?) had notes about what the
different bits controlled - I based mine on that documentation.

[Bug 532436] Re: nvidia driver sometime does not load at boot

2010-10-02 Thread John Dickson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 615549 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615549

I haven't seen this issue since upgrading to 2.6.32-25 - X now starts
perfectly every time. My symptoms are described under bug number
616197.

[Bug 616197] Re: NVIDIA driver fails to load on boot 75% of time

2010-10-02 Thread John Dickson
This issue is resolved as of 2.6.32-25 - the machine boots to X every
time, and there are no longer any messages about plymouthd or ureadahead
being killed.

[Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2010-09-05 Thread John Dickson
For those not running 64-bit Ubuntu, here's a 32-bit version of the
driver, compiled against 2.6.32-24-generic-pae.

This is based on Andrew Skalski's patch in #154, with a couple of
changes to work on 2.6.32 (probably the same as his patch in #151, which
I missed). This patch also disables tap-to-click as well as tapping the
top right corner as a right-click.

I'm using this on a Dell E6510 without any problems.

Cheers ... JD

[Bug 616197] Re: NVIDIA driver fails to load on boot 75% of time

2010-08-11 Thread John Dickson
Hi Darran

I noticed a couple of differences with 532436:
 - Xorg.log shows a stack trace (mine doesn't)
 - Post 24 mentions getting a console login at boot. Mine just hangs

But it may well be the same issue, just some different symptoms.

Cheers . John

[Bug 616197] [NEW] NVIDIA driver fails to load on boot 75% of time

2010-08-10 Thread John Dickson
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell E6510 laptop containing an NVIDIA 3100M card. I'm running
32 bit Ubuntu Lucid (10.04), using the proprietary NVIDIA driver
provided with Lucid (nouveau doesn't yet work with this card).

About 75% of the time the machine fails to boot - after 3-4 seconds, and
without showing anything on the screen (text or graphical), it hangs with a
black screen with a flashing text-mode cursor. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F7 (or any
other keys) has no effect. The Xorg.log shows:
Fatal server error:
no screens found

However, roughly once in every 4 attempts (varies widely) I see messages
on the screen about ureadahead and plymouthd having been killed by the
OOM killer, and the machine boots correctly and functions without
problem.

This happens with both the drivers provided with Lucid, and the latest
drivers directly from NVIDIA. It's been suggested on the NVIDIA forums
that this may be a timing issue.
