[Bug 147995] [Kubuntu Gutsy] After KDE login, cursor is a crosshair and first click doesn't work

2007-10-02 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Public bug reported:

This is a bizarre one. Just after login into KDE, the cursor is not the
usual arrow, but a cross, like a crosshair. When you click for the first
time is like if you were clicking on an invisible layer, no response
from menu or icon. However on that first click the cursor turns back
into the usual arrow and everything's fine again. Think of a massive
invisible information balloon that uses the whole screen at login time
and goes away at first click. Something like that.

Told you it's a bizarre one.

I tried it on a absolutely new user account (I just created it to rule
out a local profile bad setting or something) and the same happens.

Kubuntu Gutsy 100% updated as of today.

I think this started to happen maybe after I updated on monday morning
01-10-2007, previous update was on friday 28-09-2007.

[Bug 147346] Re: Firefox segfault at startup

2007-10-10 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
I can confirm this is happening to me as well. A clean profile seems to
fix it... until you install some extensions. Then 1 time out of 10 it
will start, the rest it will just segfault. Seems quite random.

Weird behaviour with extensions since this started happening (all installed
using the new profile):
* GMAIL manager: won't connect, won't work at all, AND if enabled, CTRL+CLICK
or MIDDLE CLICK on links won't open links in new tabs.
* Stylish: styles won't get loaded. Period.

It was working just fine 2 days ago. Binary from GetFirefox.com works
fine with my new and my old Firefox profile.

Hi Leann,

After hal restart, screen dimming works fine, guidance doesn't get stuck and
the FN keys seem to be there (not that I've been able to configure them, but
certainly dmesg shows the events when depressing them). I'm under the
impression that it is a HAL issue, giving some weird info to the applet...

I'll open a new bug report as you suggested, thanks a lot Leann!

[Bug 145611] [Gutsy] guidance-power-manager hangs unless I restart HAL

2007-09-27 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

After KDE is started, if I right-click on the guidance-p-m applet I can
suspend, change CPU policy, etc. However, if I left-click on the applet
to bring up the main screen, the applet freezes and consumes 100% of my
CPU power. I think it is related to the screen brightness setting, for
all that area appears sort of empty (please see screenshot). Also,
unplugging the laptop from the main power does not have an effect on
screen brightness.

Now, this happens again if I kill the applet and start it again. But if
I restart HAL, the applet works perfectly, screen brightness dims fine
when unplugging or moving the sliders, etc.

Bug #140966 is somehow related to this one.

Up to date Kubuntu Gutsy on a Sony VAIO VGN-FS285M.

[Bug 163827] [gutsy] iPod nano 3G support

2007-11-19 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
I come from bug #163827. Apparently libgpod 0.6 depends on sgutils that
are in universe and due to the fact that libgpod is on main it is not
possible to upgrade the repository version to the latest. Does the 3G
support itself depend on sgutils, or this is a fix that can be isolated
and backported to libgpod 0.5.2?

[Bug 128876] Re: strigidaemon causes 100% CPU and crashes after a while

2007-09-14 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Gillaume, I don't think such a shite CPU exists. Konq and KMail may very
well appear to have frozen (and recover suddenly when strigidaemon dies)
if the strigidaemon is drinking all the juice of the system.

In my case it doesn't, however this issue is a pain in the arse I have
to say, I need to kill strigidaemon every single time I log in my
computer. I just discovered my laptop reporting 101 degrees, which is
rather unacceptable...

Other than that, seems to work and everything, has a large index and
finds stuff on me HD.

[Bug 140966] [gutsy] Backlight adjustment not working on Sony VAIO

2007-09-19 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Public bug reported:

I installed Gutsy last week and backlight, hibernate and suspend were
working perfectly on my laptop :) the only thing that wasn't working was
the FN keys.

Since a kernel update this week, the backlight dimming doesn't work from
within guidance-power-manager. Last week I was able to move the sliders
in guidance and the screen brightness would dim accordingly straight
away. Now this is not possible. Unplugging the laptop won't dim the
screen either, which was working las week.

Now, for the FN keys I used to use (back in Feisty and Edgy) a modified
sony_acpi module and a program (fsfn) that would read, and then adjust,
screen brightness. This program would do nothing on Gutsy.

Since the kernel update, the FN keys work under fsfn!!! Please note that
I didn't install that modified sony module this time. So I'm wondering
if something has changed in the sony_acpi and sonypi modules in the
kernel that fsfn understands, but guidance-power-manager or hal doesn't.

I don't have anything in "/sys/class/backlight":
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /sys/class/backlight/
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

Sony modules seem to be loaded:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod|grep -i sony
sony_laptop31960 0
sonypi 23960 0
sony_acpi 6668 0

Hibernation and suspend seem to be working fine. Wireless a bit
temperamental after resuming but it's OK. CPU scaling works perfectly.

This is a Kubuntu Gutsy installation, up to date (4 hours since dist-
upgrade and reboot). Today another kernel was installed and the problem
persists. Sony VAIO VGN FS285M, Centrino chipset, Pentium-M 1.7GHz, 1GB
RAM. KDE.

[Bug 140966] Re: [gutsy] Backlight adjustment not working on Sony VAIO

2007-09-21 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Very interesting.

If I remove the three sony modules (sonypi, sony-acpi and sony-laptop),
then load ONLY sony-laptop and then restart dbus and guidance-power-
manager, things are working again!!!

BUT if I only remove sonypi and sony-acpi, leave sony-laptop still
loaded, restart dbus, restart guidance, things don't work! I need to
unload all three and then load sony-laptop for things to work.

What is more, dmesg shows some output when using any of the fsfn keys as well:
[ 1521.084000] atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xf5 on
isa0060/serio0).
[ 1521.084000] atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e075 ' to make it known.

When the laptop boots, there is some kernel moaning about the sonypi
module. It says to use sony-laptop instead. Please see attached file.

PS: I have loaded sony-acpi and things still work fine.

[Bug 140966] Re: [gutsy] Backlight adjustment not working on Sony VAIO

2007-09-24 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Please see next msgs for the requested files.

Kernel updated today twice (I didn't update since last friday), with the same
behaviour as I describe next happening with both kernel updates:
sony-acpi is not loaded anymore, and backlight adjustment kind of works... if
you right click on guidance applet you can change cpu policy etc, however, if
you left-click guidance (so the main window appears), guidance locks! Kill
guidance-power-manager, try again and lock again!

BUT if I restart hal and load the applet after killing it, everything
seems to be running fine (backlight adjustment works proper for
example). Not sure of what has changed here!! No loading/unloading
modules voodoo involved.

[Bug 193525] [NEW] [Hardy KDE4] Can't login to KDE4, kdeinit error

2008-02-19 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-bin-kde4

Since an update on 18-Feb-2008 I cannot login anymore on my KDE4
session. Using a new profile doesn't help. Using both nv and nvidia
drivers. Won't work either through sudo or as root.

Apparently a connection with kdeinit4 cannot be established, for what I
could see by login on a raw X session (X && DISPLAY=0:0 xterm),
unfortunately startkde doesn't let me pipe the output to a file. But
kdeinit4_wrapper moans about "/home/USER/.kde4/socket-
HOSTNAME/kdeinit4_0_0" or similar not being found (USER and HOSTNAME are
my username and hostname).

All I can see is the splash screen flashing the first icon (the HDD) for
2 seconds, then KDM appears again.

Some KDE4 apps won't work on KDE3 since then as a result. KDE3 works
flawlessly as usual.

I'm using Hardy. As updated as it can get at the moment, as python-apt
seems to be broken and a few packages (all KDE4 unrelated) can't be
updated until a fix is on the repos.

[Bug 193529] Re: [Hardy] Can't access consoles when nvidia driver is loaded

2008-02-19 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Oh, just to state the obvious lol I know that underneath the blank
screen there is a console as I can interact with it by logging in and
issuing commands. Blindly, of course.

I attach xorg.conf.

Console appears if I'm running the "nv" driver instead.

What else. All those exotic ENABLEARGB... stuff don't make a difference
if they are not on the file. The console's still blank. They're just
there to, apparently, speed up Kwin4's compositing.

[Bug 193529] [NEW] [Hardy] Can't access consoles when nvidia driver is loaded

[Bug 193529] Re: [Hardy] Can't access consoles when nvidia driver is loaded

2008-02-19 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
It doesn't:
title Ubuntu hardy (development branch), kernel 2.6.24-8-generic
root(hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.24-8-generic
root=UUID=e0482be5-e2e0-40a7-9d20-6740b8100fc6 ro splash
initrd /initrd.img-2.6.24-8-generic
quiet

It loads the splash kubuntu screen which works fine, also the output is
visible, and sometimes a disk check will happen that will take ages,
which causes bootsplash to be disabled and show proper console output.

The consoles go blank after the nvidia driver is loaded on X startup. If
I boot straight to console and manually modprobe nvidia, the console is
still visible. However after going to X, these go blank.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 172616] Re: network-manager-gnome cannot attach successfully due to dbus settings

2008-02-01 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
I believe this is more system-wide than just the gnome applet and
network manager.

It happens the same on network-manager-kde , for the same reasons.

Also, removable media mounting doesn't work, for the same reasons.

Also, amarok can't detect any mp3 players, probably for the same
reasons.

Changing the dbus policies on the "default" side of things from "deny"
to "allow" (I did it on all files) half-solves this problem.
Knetworkmanager sort of works, and removable media can be mounted BUT
providing a password first. I guess amarok can't spawn this "enter
password" dialog so it ultimately fails to detect any mp3 players
attached, even when already mounted.

I'm running Hardy now. And I can confirm that it hasn't been fixed yet. Some
custom Ubuntu code in Firefox is seriously broken, as the binaries from

[Bug 213128] [NEW] [Hardy] Guidance-power-manager doesn't know when laptop is mains unplugged

2008-04-06 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

Not sure for how long this has been going on, perhaps a couple of weeks.
The kde applet for the power manager doesn't seem to know when the
battery is unplugged or not, resulting in no CPU governor change and no
screen backlight dimming.

When unplugged, changes on the "mains connected" settings will reflect
immediately, same as when it is plugged.

This is a Sony VAIO FS285M laptop (centrino chipset, Pentium M 1.73). It
used to work just fine for many a month in this regard.

Hardy was installed fresh in January due to a bigger HDD coming in. It
worked fine then.

Hardy fully updated as of yesterday, Kubuntu, running the KDE3 applet
under KDE 4.0.3 (no change if I run the KDE3 desktop).

I think this bug is a duplicate of #193498. Deleting /etc/kde4rc may fix
this.

2008-03-27 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Aye, there were new packages it seems in the repos this morning that fixed
this problem. But definitely last night there was a problem, I'm not an apt
magician so I used synaptic to list kdebase's files and nsplugin definitely
belonged to that package as opposed to konqueror-nsplugins

Thanks!

[Bug 216208] Re: [Hardy] Amarok doesn't display many values on track information window

2008-04-12 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Another screenshot. These are the two places I've noticed.

Is this Amarok's fault or perhaps a dodgy KDE translation file? The text
means "Tag: value"

Amarok 1.4.9 (it's not even out yet! but happened the same on 1.4.8),
KDE 3.5.9 using es_ES translation package.

[Bug 216208] Re: [Hardy] Amarok doesn't display many values on track information window

2008-04-12 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Hi Lydia, as far as I can tell this has nothing to do with the file
shown, as those information tabs are for bitrate, filesize, creation
date, etc. Happens on any file. Please don't be confused by "Tag:
value", that's nothing related to ID3 tags AFAIK in this problem. Please
refer to previous screenshots.

Incidentally, the tab that does show ID3 tags works fine, as per
screenshot attached to this post.

Cheers!

OK, well, Amarok in english has not got the problem! lol so I guess this is
some sort of bizarre translation issue wit the es_ES KDE i18n package and
not an Amarok problem at all!

Moebius, your workaround works lovely :) However there's one thing it

So I was trying this out on the command line:

Thanks Moebius, I put those on the sh files and the circle is now
complete.

Yeah, got guidance configured that way already, the problem is well, if HAL
doesn't know the laptop is unplugged guidance obviously can't do anything at
all, not even change the governor. At least on my laptop! So nothing would
change - the battery icon would still appear as charging, the screen
brightness wouldn't dim and the cpu would still be running on the ondemand
governor. It would even report the battery as being 100% charged all the way
until forced shutdown due to battery being flat.

Hardy fully updated as of yesterday, Kubuntu, running the KDE3 applet
under KDE 4.0.3 (no change if I run the KDE3 desktop).

uname -a
Linux ordenata 2.6.24-12-generic #1 SMP Wed Mar 12 23:01:54 UTC 2008 i686

And lshal unplugged.

This is the diff of them both, it seems that HAL knows when the status
changes:

2008-04-24 Thread Luis Alberto Pabón
Well, sort of :) unplugging from mains has got the effect of changing the
screen brightness straight away, however the CPU governor takes a long while
to switch, if it actually does :)
