[Bug 147995] [Kubuntu Gutsy] After KDE login, cursor is a crosshair and first click doesn't work
Public bug reported: This is a bizarre one. Just after login into KDE, the cursor is not the usual arrow, but a cross, like a crosshair. When you click for the first time is like if you were clicking on an invisible layer, no response from menu or icon. However on that first click the cursor turns back into the usual arrow and everything's fine again. Think of a massive invisible information balloon that uses the whole screen at login time and goes away at first click. Something like that. Told you it's a bizarre one. I tried it on a absolutely new user account (I just created it to rule out a local profile bad setting or something) and the same happens. Kubuntu Gutsy 100% updated as of today. I think this started to happen maybe after I updated on monday morning 01-10-2007, previous update was on friday 28-09-2007. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Kubuntu Gutsy] After KDE login, cursor is a crosshair and first click doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147995 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm this is happening to me as well. A clean profile seems to fix it... until you install some extensions. Then 1 time out of 10 it will start, the rest it will just segfault. Seems quite random. Weird behaviour with extensions since this started happening (all installed using the new profile): * GMAIL manager: won't connect, won't work at all, AND if enabled, CTRL+CLICK or MIDDLE CLICK on links won't open links in new tabs. * Stylish: styles won't get loaded. Hi Leann, After hal restart, screen dimming works fine, guidance doesn't get stuck and the FN keys seem to be there (not that I've been able to configure them, but certainly dmesg shows the events when depressing them). [Bug 145611] [Gutsy] guidance-power-manager hangs unless I restart HAL
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hal After KDE is started, if I right-click on the guidance-p-m applet I can suspend, change CPU policy, etc. However, if I left-click on the applet to bring up the main screen, the applet freezes and consumes 100% of my CPU power. I think it is related to the screen brightness setting, for all that area appears sort of empty (please see screenshot). Also, unplugging the laptop from the main power does not have an effect on screen brightness. Now, this happens again if I kill the applet and start it again. But if I restart HAL, the applet works perfectly, screen brightness dims fine when unplugging or moving the sliders, etc. Bug #140966 is somehow related to this one. [Bug 140966] [gutsy] Backlight adjustment not working on Sony VAIO
Public bug reported: I installed Gutsy last week and backlight, hibernate and suspend were working perfectly on my laptop :) the only thing that wasn't working was the FN keys. Since a kernel update this week, the backlight dimming doesn't work from within guidance-power-manager. Last week I was able to move the sliders in guidance and the screen brightness would dim accordingly straight away. Now this is not possible. Unplugging the laptop won't dim the screen either, which was working las week. Now, for the FN keys I used to use (back in Feisty and Edgy) a modified sony_acpi module and a program (fsfn) that would read, and then adjust, screen brightness. This program would do nothing on Gutsy. Since the kernel update, the FN keys work under fsfn!!! Please note that I didn't install that modified sony module this time. So I'm wondering if something has changed in the sony_acpi and sonypi modules in the kernel that fsfn understands, but guidance-power-manager or hal doesn't. I don't have anything in "/sys/class/backlight": [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls /sys/class/backlight/ [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ Sony modules seem to be loaded: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ lsmod|grep -i sony sony_laptop31960 0 sonypi 23960 0 sony_acpi 6668 0 Hibernation and suspend seem to be working fine. Wireless a bit temperamental after resuming but it's OK. CPU scaling works perfectly. This is a Kubuntu Gutsy installation, up to date (4 hours since dist- upgrade and reboot). Very interesting. If I remove the three sony modules (sonypi, sony-acpi and sony-laptop), then load ONLY sony-laptop and then restart dbus and guidance-power- manager, things are working again!!! BUT if I only remove sonypi and sony-acpi, leave sony-laptop still loaded, restart dbus, restart guidance, things don't work! I need to unload all three and then load sony-laptop for things to work. What is more, dmesg shows some output when using any of the fsfn keys as well: [ 1521.084000] atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0xf5 on isa0060/serio0). [ 1521.084000] atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e075 ' to make it known. When the laptop boots, there is some kernel moaning about the sonypi module. It says to use sony-laptop instead. [Bug 193529] Re: [Hardy] Can't access consoles when nvidia driver is loaded
It doesn't: title Ubuntu hardy (development branch), kernel 2.6.24-8-generic root(hd0,4) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.24-8-generic root=UUID=e0482be5-e2e0-40a7-9d20-6740b8100fc6 ro splash initrd /initrd.img-2.6.24-8-generic quiet It loads the splash kubuntu screen which works fine, also the output is visible, and sometimes a disk check will happen that will take ages, which causes bootsplash to be disabled and show proper console output. The consoles go blank after the nvidia driver is loaded on X startup. If I boot straight to console and manually modprobe nvidia, the console is still visible. However after going to X, these go blank. [Bug 172616] Re: network-manager-gnome cannot attach successfully due to dbus settings
I believe this is more system-wide than just the gnome applet and network manager. It happens the same on network-manager-kde , for the same reasons. Also, removable media mounting doesn't work, for the same reasons. Also, amarok can't detect any mp3 players, probably for the same reasons. Changing the dbus policies on the "default" side of things from "deny" to "allow" (I did it on all files) half-solves this problem. Knetworkmanager sort of works, and removable media can be mounted BUT providing a password first. I guess amarok can't spawn this "enter password" dialog so it ultimately fails to detect any mp3 players attached, even when already mounted. -- network-manager-gnome cannot attach successfully due to dbus settings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/172616 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Moebius, your workaround works lovely :) However there's one thing it doesn't change: the cpu freq scaling governor. So I was trying this out on the command line: sudo echo powersave > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor but I get a "permission denied" error (using sudo wtf)... any ideas? Re: [Bug 213128] Re: [Hardy] Guidance-power-manager doesn't know when laptop is mains unplugged
Thanks Moebius, I put those on the sh files and the circle is now complete. Yeah, got guidance configured that way already, the problem is well, if HAL doesn't know the laptop is unplugged guidance obviously can't do anything at all, not even change the governor. At least on my laptop! So nothing would change - the battery icon would still appear as charging, the screen brightness wouldn't dim and the cpu would still be running on the ondemand governor. It would even report the battery as being 100% charged all the way until forced shutdown due to battery being flat. -- [Hardy] Guidance-power-manager doesn't know when laptop is mains unplugged https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213128 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213128] [NEW] [Hardy] Guidance-power-manager doesn't know when laptop is mains unplugged
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kde-guidance Not sure for how long this has been going on, perhaps a couple of weeks. The kde applet for the power manager doesn't seem to know when the battery is unplugged or not, resulting in no CPU governor change and no screen backlight dimming.
