FYI after I muddled through the install a couple weekends ago by linking or renaming stuff under /dev/mapper I ended up with a bootable system. But the problem that persisted was grub-update (or whatever runs during system updates) continued to try to write to /dev/sda which is one element of my RAID5 group. I used the information from a post that noted there was no /boot/device.map and created one on my system. That resolved the last issue I was having. Now that Geoff123 mentions it, I also noticed it happens between scenes. [Bug 70075] Re: mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop
I have just recovered from this! You don't have to kill off your session. I used a terminal window that had focus on that desktop and killed the only gnome-screensaver I saw running; then ran a new gnome-screensaver. Then I went out for coffee. When I got back I had forgotten what I was doing and absentmindedly moved the mouse to make the screen saver go away and then I noticed that the desktop was responding to mouse button events again. The top and bottom panels still did not un-hide so I right clicked on the little edge that shows and unchecked auto-hide which made the top panel pop out. I then re-checked the auto-hide button and now both the top and bottom panels are working properly even though I didn't mess with the bottom one. If you aren't lucky enough to have focus in a terminal window you could try to to a text console and "killall gnome-screensaver" and "gnome-screensaver --display :1" to see if that helps. [Bug 70075] Re: mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop
I can confirm the behavior but I can't confirm that it's a bug in the screensaver. I can reproduce this inside a 3 day window. ** Changed in: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Status: Unconfirmed => Confirmed -- mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop https://launchpad.net/bugs/70075 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70075] Re: mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop
Sorry I left one detail out of my previous submission. I have the top and bottom panels set to auto-hide. After the mouse buttons stop working the panels will not un-hide when I move the pointer to the top or bottom edge of the screen. I have killed gnome-panel and it restarted automatically with no change. Now that I think about it, I'm not 100% sure if I noticed the non-un-hiding behavior before I kill it. -- mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop https://launchpad.net/bugs/70075 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 70075] Re: mouse issue screensaver + rdesktop
I have had the same problem for about a month on my Ubuntu Dapper system. I didn't make the connection with screen saver but it is true that it only happens when the screen saver has been active but not every time. Usually once every few days. I exit my vncviewer sessions every evening. I never use rdesktop but I always use vncviewer. So vncviewer has always been running whenever I have had this problem. I stay logged in with my desktop up for days at a time. I also am not 100% sure that vncviewer had focus every time. The only way I found to recover is to kill my X session with but today I have too many hours of context in my various windows and I'm looking for another way. I am afraid to kill gdm as mentioned above because I think that will also kill the X server. Can someone tell me if that's so? I have this problem with both USB and PS2 mouse connections. I can remove one type of mouse and plug in the other and the system still finds the mouse and lets me move the pointer. No mouse button events ever get though. I can (and have as I write this) login on a console and run startx to get another desktop running. This desktop functions normally. I can run xev from a console and point it at either X session. The second X server will show mouse movements and mouse button events. The first X server shows the mouse movements but no mouse button events. This is running on a 4 processor Xeon box.
