Yes, the feature was never added to compiz, and still does not exist in
the 12.10. On the other hand, window docking with Ctrl-Super-(arrow)
has been added, which is almost enough. It would still be nice to have
window snapping during regular moves and resizes, but the current
functionality is enough that I think this bug can be closed as Won't
Fix.

Same here. In fact, this bug report is how I found out how to show the
album art. It seems the art pane is just hidden below the bottom of the
window. I was able to partially view the album art of the currently
playing song by switching to small display, then back to full, then
resizing the window (since turning off small-display didn't restore the
original size... another bug, perhaps?).

According to the man page, The cal utility displays a simple calendar
in traditional format and ncal offers an alternative layout..., so the
switched axes are not a problem with ncal. But I do observe the problem
that the -M option does not cause the week to start with Monday with
cal.

The man page is shared for cal and ncal, and it says ncal has more
options, so it may be the case that the -M option is only for ncal.
Until this gets fixed, I came up with the following workaround:

$ ncal -M -C
   November 2011

14 15 16 17 18 19 20

Using ncal, the -M option starts the week on Monday, and the -C option

[Bug 875274] [NEW] Unity3d fails to load with old ~/.config/dconf/user file

INSTALL PROCEDURE:
I just installed 11.10 over 11.04. My root / directory and /home directory are 
on separate partitions, so when choosing installation options I chose other 
and manually selected to format / and use my old /home directory, which means 
my 11.04 config files still existed after the install.

SYMPTOMS:
I found that after logging in, Unity3d would only show a background image and 
no GUI (it would not crash or fall back to 2d, just sit there with a background 
image and a mouse cursor). I could ctrl-alt-delete to logout. I could then 
login with Unity2d with no problems. The correct video driver was installed, 
and /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p returned all yesses.

CAUSE AND SOLUTION:
After much trial and error, I found that the problem was an old 
.config/dconf/user file. I can attach this file if it would help with solving 
this bug. Moving this file out of the way allowed a new one to be generated, 
and then Unity3d started as it should.

A possible fix for this bug is to remove, or move, ~/.config/dconf/user
during install, or at least check that it is compatible with the new
system.

I do not see gvim spiking the CPU though. And I notice these problems
even if I move all my vim configs out of the way (e.g. .vimrc

Running gvim -f does nothing for the warnings, but does make it
responsive.

What Timo said sounds right. The problem persists even if a window is a
few pixels away from the edge. I must give it a significant buffer
(10px?) for it to only show on the appropriate desktop.

This effect also wraps. I often have a terminal on the left edge of
the left desktop (in a 2x2 arrangement), and a maximized browser on the
right desktop. When I try to use the scrollbar of the browser (on the
far right), I end up resizing the terminal by dragging its left edge
into the desktop.

I explained further in the comment on 2009.10.17, but basically I expect
the window edges to jump to the next edge (side of desktop or side of
another window) when I use the shift+arrow keys to move or resize
windows. This is and has been the behavior for Metacity for quite some
time, and as I primarily use the keyboard to open/arrange windows, it is
something I use quite often.

If you would like an example, say I open a terminal, which is on the
left side of the screen and is the only window open. If I want to move
it to the right edge using the keyboard, I would use Alt+Space m then
use Shift+RightArrow to jump-move the window to the right edge. In
Metacity this works, but not with Compiz. Instead it will only move the
window a constant number of pixels (whether I use Shift or not).

I am running Ubuntu 10.10, but this problem has been around since Lucid,
and maybe Karmic. I apologize that I don't know in what package the bug
lies.

When I resume my laptop (Thinkpad X61-t, 64bit) from suspend, the system
freezes either at the login screen or immediately after logging in.
During the freeze, I can move the mouse cursor, but neither clicking nor
keypresses have any effect, and animations (e.g. nm-applet's icon) also
stop. The system thaws (becomes responsive again) 10-20 seconds later.

My guess is that the freeze occurs while attempting to connect to the
wireless. Further, it may be when it attempts to a different wireless
network than the one it was on when it was suspended (as it appears the
bug does not occur when I suspend and resume in the same room (e.g. if I
try right now)). It also may be caused by something related to network
connections, as I occasionally have a responsive system while it is
connecting, then freeze AFTER nm-applet reports that I have connected to
a network.

I apologize for all the guesswork. I'd be happy to try and debug,
collect logs, etc., if someone could point me in the right direction.

[Bug 650750] [NEW] Empathy contact list defocuses on most keypresses

I'm running Maverick beta (last updated Sept 27th 2010) with Empathy
2.32.0.

In what appears to be a regression from Lucid, I cannot control the
Empathy contact list by the keyboard. I would like to do the following:

1. Press tab to change focus from the buddy list to status settings

2. Select a status from the dropdown list (to be fair, this might not
have been available in Lucid)

3. Press enter while a contact is selected to open a chat window with
that contact

Currently, while the status text box is focused, I can type a new status
and enter it, but I cannot open the dropdown menu. Pressing tab in the
status text box changes focus to the buddy list (rather than to the
dropdown menu button).

The more serious problem is that, apparently, while the buddy list is
focused (e.g. a contact is highlighted) any key besides up and down will
defocus the application. I cannot press tab to go back to the status
text box, and I cannot press enter to open a chat window with that
contact. Even pressing letter or number keys will defocus the
application.

This is very annoying for me as I primarily use the keyboard. I would be
happy to provide further information and some time debugging.

[Bug 581405] [NEW] home partition mounted read-only after resume

Occasionally when resuming from suspend, my /home partition will be
mounted as read-only. I can write to my / partition (on the same drive)
as normal, leading me to believe it's not a hardware issue. Rebooting
the machine seems to clear up the issue.

I have not determined what set of circumstances will reproduce the
issue, but it has happened to me at least 3 times since installing the
Lucid beta (perhaps 6 weeks ago). Please let me know what information I
can collect to make debugging easier. I think this is a mountall bug,
but I am not certain.

Thanks Steve, bug #501801 is exactly the problem I'm experiencing. I
suppose the other, pre-reboot, symptoms I was experiencing were because
of the errors in / caused by an upgrade (which sounds like another
bug...). I'll look for the update.

I believe this is the same problem I'm experiencing. I have not found a
solution and must reinstall Ubuntu. I notice that before the killer-
reboot there are several other symptoms (perhaps red herrings). The
first one was a XKB error, and now I am having a strange issue where
modal windows (e.g. the Edit Connections or Reboot windows) display
nothing in the form, but just the window border and titlebar. I also
noticed that while I could connect to wireless networks, no data would
be transmitted (as far as I could tell. Ping tests failed without even
sending anything (host unknown error)). These symptoms did not appear
except when rebooting resulted in the (seemingly) infinite loop of
failed fsck checks.

Upon further inspection it seems that the primary error I'm experiencing
is different from the described bug, although I also experience it
(being unable to cancel fsck with C). I was able to recover my root
partition by booting into a live CD (well, USB-stick) and running fsck
from there, fixing the errors. I don't know why, but fsck was
continuously failing while being run in Plymouth. Every time it found an
error, it had some error (sorry I don't recall what) and restarted the
disk check. Therefore, it would say Checking disk (n-1/n) and every
time the check failed it would increment n (e.g. 1/2, 2/3, etc...).
Should I file a separate bug for this under Plymouth, or does it concern
a different project?

This happened to me as well, but also there were cells marked incorrect
(red font) when they were actually correct (no other cell in
row/column/square had the same number. I double-checked). After getting
stuck on a first pass, I tried to have the program Fill all squares,
but it did not do anything. I cleared the numbers and notes I had on the
board and started over. As I was filling out the board, some numbers
would highlight red, but not be paired with anything. After finishing
the board, it did not acknowledge the win.

Just for the record, I've been a near-full-time Linux user for several
years before this incident, so I'm not abandoning Linux or Ubuntu. After
the failed upgrade from Jaunty Alpha 5 to Alpha 6, I formatted the
partition and did a fresh install of Alpha6, which worked well enough.
I'm now running Karmic fairly smoothly.

I was just apologizing for not being able to keep the broken install on
my computer for further debugging, as I needed to use the computer (yes,
I know the warnings against running an alpha version on a production
machine).

There's no way I can recall any more information about the problem, and
I haven't seen it again since, so I'm fine with closing this bug. Thanks
for your attention.

The bug still exists in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Beta. Same symptoms as
before.

To be clear, there are 3 things I would like to see happen (all of these
are in the context of moving/resizing windows with the keyboard):

1. Holding the shift key while moving a window will cause it to jump to
the next edge (window border or screen border)

2. Holding the shift key while resizing a window will cause the side
being resized to jump to the next edge.

3. The window size information (such as when resizing a terminal window)
will be properly redrawn (no artifacts) when the window is being
resized.

If any of these are unclear, go see what happens when using Metacity. I
just want the functionality in Compiz to be the same as that.

I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

Moving and resizing windows via the keyboard (alt+space+m for move,
alt+space+r or alt+F8 for resize) works great with metacity, but only
partially with compiz.

The main problem is that window snapping (by holding down shift while
using the arrow keys to move/resize) does not happen, so our only choice
is to keep resizing/moving the window to the desired place, or using the
mouse.

The second, minor problem is that during a resize the notification
showing the row/column size on a terminal window shows artifacts, as it
moves when the window is resized.

Note: I am running from my Windows partition, so I cannot execute the
commands to get, for example, precise version numbers. Also, because I
cannot access system logs or anything, I will try to recount my steps
from memory.

1) I was running Jaunty Alpha 5, trying to do a dist-upgrade after Alpha
6 was released

2) Aptitude was whatever version that was available for the Alpha 5 (I
last ran a package update about a week ago (early-mid March 2009))

3) I noticed that scim-bridge crashed when I was using gvim, and I tried
to report the crash. The crash reporting tool said it could not complete
because packages were out of date. I tried doing aptitude update
followed by aptitude dist-upgrade. It said it would download many
different package upgrades, and installing would take around 100Mb. I
continued with the upgrade. The upgrade process downloaded all the
packages fine. I expected it to then install and configure the updated
packages without a problem.

4) ...Instead, it got about halfway (sorry I don't know what it failed
on) and the screen froze. At the time I was running Firefox and Pidgin
in addition to the terminal running the upgrade process. I used ctrl-
alt-left_arrow to change desktops, and when it arrived on the other
desktop, everything became unresponsive. The keyboard did nothing, the
mouse cursor did not move. I waited a couple minutes, and nothing
changed, so I hard-reset the computer by pressing the power button for
5-seconds. When the computer restarted, it failed to load gdm, so I was
presented with a console screen. I ran a few commands, such as dpkg
--configure -a and aptitude upgrade, which seemed to continue
installing where the failed upgrade left off, but at the end it said
there were many errors. After restarting again, gdm still would not
load. I couldn't even use vim to analyze config files. Both gdm and vim
crashed, saying Bus Error (core dumped). I tried restarting in
recovery mode, running the dpkg fixing tool (whatever that does),
updating grub, fixing the display, etc.. Then resumed startup. No gdm. I
restarted again, and now there were two kernel choices instead of 1. I
tried both, and no luck. Fortunately I left an old, dusty Windows Vista
partition on the drive, which booted fine. I am writing this bug report
from that Vista partition.

A few more details:
I'm running on a Lenovo Thinkpad x61t tablet
I was using ext4 on both the / and /home partitions
I started using Jaunty from Alpha 4

I'm sorry that I'm not going to leave the broken Ubuntu installation on
my drive for further analysis. I need to use this laptop for school and
other tasks, so I'm going to do a fresh install of Jaunty Alpha 6. This
is why I was trying to be very thorough in my process description.

Hopefully this problem does not affect other users.

I've also lost the ability to start a terminal with any keyboard
shortcut, and jump-moving and jump-resizing windows by keyboard with the

I observed this in Jaunty Alpha 4. I'm running a Thinkpad x61t.

Interesting to note that it's not the keys, but the targets. Eg, opening
a terminal, print screen, run-application dialog, etc. do not work no
matter what the keyboard shortcut, but those same shortcut keys work
with other targets (eg. expo, window move, etc).

As Francis noted, it is more likely that this is a problem with xserver
and not the font. Perhaps the bug could be moved/reassigned?

I was noticing errors loading CLIM when the ttf-arphic-uming font was
installed.  I confirmed that removing the font allowed CLIM to be
loaded, and reinstalling it caused the problem to reappear. It appears
not to be a CLIM issue (aside from bad error handling), but rather a
problem with this font. Running xlsfonts -ll causes the following
error:

X Error of failed request:  BadValue (integer parameter out of range for 
operation)

Running xlsfonts -l, however, does not cause any errors. I've attached

I'm running Hardy 8.04, upgraded from Gutsy 7.10.
Problems do occur exactly as described.
I'm using Firefox 3.0b5, Thunderbird 2.0.0.12, scim-anthy-1.2.4

[Bug 133723] Re: gnome-terminal locks up on unicode input

here is the valgrind log mentioned in the bug description.

While logging, I let the gnome-terminal exhibiting the symptoms run for
approximately 1 minute after it locked up, hoping it would close or
finish on its own.  After no such luck, I killed it, and the gnome-
terminal running valgrind was therefore killed as well.

[Bug 98813] Re: [apport] gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV

I have been seeing the same symptoms.  I was at first unable to
reproduce it reliably, but I found that button-mashing (like repeating
the home keys: asdf;lkj) while in unicode-input mode (scim) would
crash it quickly.  Actually, it doesn't crash, it just locks up.  I have
to then kill it manually (which kills all other instances of gnome-
terminal at the same time).

I tried to follow the valgrind wiki in order to produce this log, but if
I did something wrong please let me know.  I'm not too skilled at
reporting this kind of bug yet, but I'm willing to learn.

also, please reopen this bug, as I need to use unicode from the command
line for my school project.  I regularly use grep, sed, awk, etc. with
unicode, and these lock-ups are a pain
