[Bug 466575] Re: secure remove of external USB-HDD produces error
For some reason this seems to be hardware-dependant. I have so far "collected" four USB SATA docking stations or adapters. I do not see this bug on USB 2 at all (ICH 10). On USB 3 (Renesas/NEC) I see it on one of two docking stations. On that one, I see it every time, and on the other never at all. Also, I never saw this when disconnecting a stick, a memory card or a phone. Just with one docking station (Icy Box IB 111 with integrated hub). It's not the hub either, second USB 3 dock works perfectly through the hub of the one producing the error. Also, the dock producing the error is hotplug capable, according to Icy Box. Strange, but the hardware dependancy is obvious. Also, I noticed when I correctly disconnect a drive on USB 3, kern.log says Oct 20 01:39:08 FSC kernel: [12509.993534] usb 10-1.4: reset SuperSpeed USB device number 19 using xhci_hcd Oct 20 01:39:08 FSC kernel: [12510.011574] xhci_hcd :02:00.0: xHCI xhci_drop_endpoint called with disabled ep 88003eec3b80 Oct 20 01:39:08 FSC kernel: [12510.011578] xhci_hcd :02:00.0: xHCI xhci_drop_endpoint called with disabled ep 88003eec3bc0 Oct 20 01:39:08 FSC kernel: [12510.028700] usb 10-1.4: USB disconnect, device number 19 Oct 20 01:40:42 FSC kernel: [12604.084118] usb 10-1: USB disconnect, device number 17 Oct 20 01:40:42 FSC kernel: [12604.084122] usb 10-1.1: USB disconnect, device number 18 When I disconnect with the error, nothing gets written to kern.log at all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/466575 Title: secure remove of external USB-HDD produces error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/udisks/+bug/466575/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 920744] Re: alsa-driver: Cannot turn off internal speaker Intel HD Audio
After reading lots and lots of bug reports on the Internet, I tried to load, remove and/or blacklist pcspkr and/or snd-pcsp, to no avail. The speaker setting in alsamixer remains tied to internal and external speakers at the same time. When I disable the internal speaker, the externals go off, too. After many fiddlings I found that plugging an empty (e.g. nothing soldered to it) headphone plug into the frontpanel headphone jack does mute the internal speaker, and not the external ones. But even then, disabling the pc speaker in alsamixer will turn off the external speaker. So I do have a bad workaround, but not a solution... [Bug 647973] Re: USB 3.0: xhci_hcd WARN: Stalled endpoint
I have Lucid (10.04 LTS) and I confirm the problem. I can precisely describe the hardware in question, it is a PCI Express USB 3 card by manufacturer Delock. It uses the VIA VLI 800 chipset. Hard disks in USB-3-to-SATA adapters are only detected upon boot time. Rarely a plug&pray detection works, but then only once, not twice. Detection of a drive can be forced with rmmod xhci; modprobe xhci. I also see numerous "WARN: short transfer on control ep" and "WARN: Stalled endpoint", but no buffer errors. I suspect there might be a 64 bit issue behind this, and both on the side of the xhci kernel module, and the hardware (or the firmware - yes, this VLI chipset does have a firmware of it's own). The card runs absolutely perfect under Windows XP 32 Bit with the enclosed Windows driver V 1.40a. It also runs flawlessly under Windows 7 32 Bit. But under Windows Vista 64 Bit I get bluescreens of death upon each and every boot, even in safe mode. And that also applies to drivers version 1.50 and 1.90, so I suspect there is a compatibility issue underneath. My kernel is a 2.6.32-42 - that is the latest that Lucid will install by itself. Lucid is still not declared dead. Yes, I know that there is Precise, and a point release has been issued. But migrating to Precise is no option for me as long as it forces me to use Unity, but that's another story. [Bug 920744] [NEW] alsa-driver: Cannot turn off internal speaker Intel HD Audio
Public bug reported: Hi, I use Lucid (10.04.3 LTS) on a Fujitsu Esprimo P5731 quadcore machine with Intel HD Audio with ALC633. I cannot turn off the internal speaker. There is no setting to turn it off, and it does not go off by itself when external speakers are connected, as with the Windows driver. The hardware setting is set to "Analog Stereo Output", and Output is set to "Internal Audio Analog Stereo". As a connection I can choose between headphones (then all speakers are off altogether), Analog Output and Analog Speakers. There is no difference between the latter two. Both the external speakers and the internal speaker sound at all times... [Bug 454388] Re: [i915g] intel card connected to a monitor acer AL1916 stuck at low resolution due a DDC issue
I would like to point out that this we be less an issue if Ubuntu simply had a dialog to simply manually set a resolution! Every operating system I know can do this. If not EDID data can be retrieved (like with old monitors, or monitors hooked up via BNC connectors, or monitors behind a KVM switch, but I also know some monitors that have defunct DDC, so no EDID either) Ubuntu suddenly becomes extremely user-unfriendly and archaic, you have to craft your own xorg.conf and compile modelines again (yuck!!). Devels, *please* give us a simple slider in the monitor dialog to just simply set resolution and vertical frequency by hand. If you don't want to bother a newbie user with that, you could hide it behind a checkbox "advanced settings". It is still my firm belief that a modern operating system _must_ have a GUI that allows manual mode setting if the automatic procedure fails, and it must fail on each and every analog monitor... -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685516 Title: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is unable to handle analog monitors (resolution cannot be set) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 685516] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is unable to handle analog monitors (resolution cannot be set)
Public bug reported: After a couple of years with 8.x on an AMD 64 machine with an Nvidia 285 graphics board, I know switched to 10.04 LTS on an Intel ICH10 machine (quadcore) with onboard Intel Q45 graphics (Fujitsu Esprimo P5731). Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is unable to work with my high quality analog monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 950 p plus). As it is an anlog monitor capable of going up to 1600 x 1200 at 85 Hz (fh max is 110 kHz) it is connected to the PC using BNC connectors / coaxial cables - the standard for high quality analog monitor connection. BNC connections by design cannot transport DDC information, so EDID is not available. But instead of either asking the user to manually enter either the monitor make & model or alternatively it's resolution/frequency specs, Ubuntu forces the user into extremely ugly 1024 x 768 at 60 Hz. Besides the low resolution, 60 Hz are literally painful. After some googling I found some advice in an Ubuntu user forum, querying a standard VESA modeline at 1600 x 1200 at 85 Hz (cvt 1600 1200 85) and adding this as a new mode (xrandr --newmode [output of cvt] ; xrandr --admode VGA1 1600x1200_85.00). After that I can select the correct resolution with System / Preferences. But annoyingly this has to be repeated after every (!) reboot, because some nasty automatic function thinks that this resolution is beyond the capabilities of my monitor (which is not true) and dismisses the correct setting, reverting to 1024 x 768 60 Hz and giving an error message after login ("correct settings cannot be determined" - ?). This is highly annoying! If there is an automatic function, there _always_ (always, always, always!) has to be a manual override. Do not try to be overly user-friendly. There is nothing wrong with an additional, optional, manual settings dialog. In the meantime until the GUI is fixed, is there a way to persistently convince the X server (or wherever the dismissal of the configuration takes place) that the resolution is correct? ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685516 Title: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is unable to handle analog monitors (resolution cannot be set) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 685323] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS does not assign an IPv4 address to eth0
Clarification of workaround #2: Network has to be disconnected _manually_ by pulling the network connector. Disconnecting through the GUI does not heal the error, but simply pulling the plug does. All other operating systems on the very same PC (Windowx XP, Vista, 7 and OS/2) have no networking problems at all, so it's not a hardware issue. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685323 Title: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS does not assign an IPv4 address to eth0 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 685323] [NEW] Ubuntu 10.04 LTS does not assign an IPv4 address to eth0
Public bug reported: This is fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Intel ICH10 machine (quadcore), a Fujitsu Esprimo P5731. It uses the Intel 1000e onboard network adapter. Internet connection is established through a DSL router/modem that does NAT, so for all local PCs internet is just traffic that goes out over the standard gateway, no PPP is involved. Between 1 out of 3 and 1 out of 2 times after bootup, the network indicator says that network is up, but it isn't. Clicking on it reveals that the IP address is 0.0.0.0 which is, of course wrong. Initially I set the system to use DHCP, which worked fine during installation and a couple of days after that. Then came the first occurence of the problem: IP was 0.0.0.0, according to the GUI, but subnet mask, routing and DNS were set _correctly_. Going onto the shell and inspecting that with ifconfig eth0 revealed that the system had an IPv6 address assigned (where from? The router doesn't issue IPv6 address leases, and Ubuntu is, by default, set to ignore IPv6), but _no IPv4 address_ whatsoever! I tried to configure the setup manually with a fixed IP over the GUI - to no avail! No matter what IP I configure on the GUI, ifconfig consistently says that no IPv4 address at all has been set... But I found two different ways to circumvent this problem: a) Manually configuration using ifconfig b) Disconnecting the PC from the network and reconnecting. So Ubuntu's eth0 autoconfiguration does work - but not during boot. And the manual configuration on the GUI does not work at all. There are no problems with the router or the router's DHCP server. Two other PCs with Ubuntu 8, an OS/2 and all sorts of Windows systems run flawlessly. Also, the problem does not occur on every boot, but sometimes 1 out of 3, sometimes 1 out of 2 times. Really annoying... ** Affects: gnome-nettool (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/685323 Title: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS does not assign an IPv4 address to eth0 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 669459] [NEW] Ubuntu installation writes into foreign partitions
Public bug reported: Below is the original text of the question as I posted it. Underneath some new information. Thanks Oliver Kluge Hi, I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop AMD64 on a PC that has a terabyte sized hard disk, which is already fully partitioned (with two partitions prepared for Ubuntu and Ubuntu's swap device). On that system there is a Logical Volume Manager installed (IBM). This LVM could be ignored by Ubuntu, as it is meant for an existing, working, bootable JFS partition containing eComStation, which is the current version of IBMs OS/2. But unfortunately, Ubuntu trashes the LVMs information on the disk, either the DLAT or the BBR. After installing Ubuntu _and telling it not to install Grub2 into the MBR (!)_ the LVM info gets damaged beyond repair. Ubuntu runs flawlessly, having actually installed Grub2 into it's partitions PBR, as instructed. But eComStation won't run, and a Logical Volume Manager run from CD complains corrupt partition info (the actual partition table is intact. But disk editing tools like DFsee show that it's the LVM info that got damaged). IBMs LVM stores its info in the last sector of track 0, as opposed to the MBR which of course is in the first. The MBR is not damaged. It boots IBMs boot manager out of a small partition, and that runs okay. It will boot Ubuntu and every Windows installed on the system, but because of the damaged DLAT and/or BBR no longer eComStation. The error can be pinned down to Ubuntu. Immediately before installation everything is fine, immediately afterwards it is broken, reproducibly. Anyone got a hint why Ubuntu does this, even when told not to install boot code into /dev/sda? Thanks Oliver New information: a) Happens with 10.04.1, too, and also happens using the installation function of a running Live Ubuntu b) I bulk copied the entire hard disk to external storage and so I am able to binary compare immediately before and immediately after installing Ubuntu in /dev/sda9 (and Grub2 in there, too, not into the MBR). I am scanning the whole disk, but apparently Ubuntus installer wrote, without permission, into /dev/sda5 which contains the JFS partition of eComStation.
