[Bug 452175] Re: Random segfaults when using ld.so explicitly to start a program

2009-11-12 Thread Sven Herzberg
I have a laptop with Fedora 12. On that machine, I have a debian-lenny
chroot.

Within the chroot, I can reproduce the same behavior.

Outside of it, I can't (because which is a binary here).

# uname -a
Linux boober.fraggle 2.6.31.5-115.fc12.i686.PAE #1 SMP Wed Nov 4 00:27:30 EST
2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

So it might be worth to check upstream kernels first.

[Bug 202046] Re: Cario_paint can NOT paint composited GtkTreeView context at Hardy

2009-04-21 Thread Sven Herzberg
This is actually not a bug.

You are not expecting composited toplevel windows to appear magically.
You expect a compositing manager to do this. Just like this, you'd have
to implement a compositing manager inside your application/toolkit if
you want subwindows to be properly composed.

I did quite some hacking on aldegonde to implement some fancyness (to
check if it works at all) - and this was exactly what I had to do. And
then everything's fine. Just traverse down the widget tree and compose
the windows to their parents.

debugging packages.

[Bug 29377] Re: pkg-config data is installed with the x-Flag

2008-08-01 Thread Sven Herzberg
Dear Triagers,

is it really that hard to install autogen on your machine, check if the
bug is still valid and close or confirm it for that version?

Please tell me why on the one hand you usually ask for explicit
reproduction details on most of the bug reports and why on the other,
you don't care about it. I'm really sick of being asked "please check
with or I'll close this" on all my
valid bug reports.

[Bug 248472] [NEW] Provide proper UI for forced mounts

2008-07-14 Thread Sven Herzberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ntfs-3g

When backing up the data for a friend of mine, I wasn't able to mount
the ntfs partition of his windows drive because windows didn't boot up
properly anymore. So the journal wasn't empty and gnome-volume-manager
plus hal plus ntfs-3g (etc. you get the idea ;-)) wasn't able to mount
the partition at all.

I had to open a root shell to mount it manually, which really sucks to
do in front of non-techy users ("linux is s complicated", you get
the idea ;-)).

So please get this to work properly with a nice UI in the future.

That bug is pretty well described. If you like closing outstanding bugs
just because you're too lazy to check on your own if the bug is still

I do have one, but it doesn't contain the settings for the wacom devices

we should really push Ubuntu to support it out of the box again (eg.

"It works with Ubuntu" to me doesn't include manual fixes. Out of the

This is another issue. The focus is still on the terminal, that's why
this works. Try this:

1. Switch to VT1 ()
2. Log in using the same username/password as you already did for $YOUR_DESKTOP
3. Start glxgears from here: DISPLAY=:0 glxgears -fullscreen

In this case the window is not closable - which is a bug.

[Bug 92214] Re: would be nice to add .gnu_debuglink when --dbg-package is used

2007-08-28 Thread Sven Herzberg
It's also problematic with the gail package.

libgail-dbg:
/usr/lib/debug/libgailutil.so.18.0.1

libgail18-dbgsym:
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/libgailutil.so.18.0.1
libgail-common-dbgsym:
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libferret.so
/usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/modules/libgail.so

Instead of preserving the -dbg package, wouldn't it be more useful to
just create the ddebs and make the -dbg package depend on the ddebs?

(My problem is to locate a potential bug in libgail.so, which doesn't
get the gnu_debuglink for some reason)

In the GNOME bugzilla someone reported that vte 0.16.8 made things

You can fetch the packages from:

So, I can confirm that these packages fix the problems for feisty and I
propose (request) that these packages get backported to feisty to fix
this really annoying regression.

2007-05-13 Thread Sven Herzberg
> I can confirm the crash when switching sizes in camorama. All of the

Are you sure you're not just mixing "empty filter pipeline" with "there
are no effects"? The effects handling of 0.17 was completely messed up
(the queues haven't been savable, extensible etc.). With 0.18 it's
actually possible to really create filter pipelines (though save and
restore still has to be implemented). But at least, it's a lot easier to
implement new filters with camorama now.

Also, the resize issue is a completely different thing.

[Bug 113588] [edgy] Fails to detect free disk space > 2GB

2007-05-09 Thread Sven Herzberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: arj

I just wanted to create a backup of a large folder (5.8 GB). I bought a
500GiB disk to have lots of space for backups.

I kept the disk with the preformatted fat32 which doesn't allow files
larger than 4 GB. Tar wasn't able to create the archive as it ran
against the maximum file size boundary ("File size limit exceeded").

So I remembered ARJ from the late-nineties and remembered its superb
multi-volume capabilities. I also remembered that ARJ is free software
and so I didn't hesitate to install it onto the edgy computer (don't
tell me to upgrade, I'm creating the backup FOR the upgrade).

I ran this command to get 3GB volumes:
[14:12] [EMAIL PROTECTED]: ~ > sudo arj a -v3G -r
/media/TREKSTOR/shaun-debian-20041106.arj old_sys_shaun_debian_20041106

/media/TREKSTOR/shaun-debian-20041106.arj
Warning! Only 2147483647 bytes of free disk space. Continue?

While df reported the expected 400+ GB available. (Looks like a variable
size limit.) Will debug it this weekend.

[Bug 24250] Re: Doesn't honor gnome proxy settigs

2007-04-26 Thread Sven Herzberg
I still don't think that the gnome proxy settings should be what update-
manager should look at for several reasons:

1. I might run update-manager with root permissions (remember: I might even do
this without a proper intention, because all the update tools need superuser
priviliges) - then there's no way to access the gnome proxy settings of the
user anymore
2. The technical reason: update-manager serves (in a rough view) as a front-end
to apt. Listening to the gnome proxy settings is nice, but as long as the
apt-settings are not correct (or - by mistake or intention - apt and gnome have
different proxy settings), update-manager should still use exactly the same
mechanism as apt does.

Use case: set up a local apt proxy for Ubuntu and use an http proxy to
forward all apt-requests to is, but the default web access is provided
by the plain router setup.

[Bug 90439] Re: gnome-launch-box 0.2 is out

2007-03-07 Thread Sven Herzberg
Reasons to take 0.2:
 * 0.2 contains at least a fix for bug 69783 as well as bug fixes for other
known problems
 * it is updated to use GtkRecent instead of EggRecent (which have different
file formats); so 0.2 will integrate better with GTK 2.10 based GNOME releases.
 * g-l-b 0.2 is easier to use (you just need to add it to your session, no
fiddling with keyboard short cuts anymore)
 * g-l-b 0.1 is *very* old. The current package contains a huge diff between
0.1 and some svn revision. Upgrading to 0.2 will reduce this diff to the
absolute minimum (which is better for you and easier to maintain)

Sebastian promised to look into creating a package tomorrow, the
necessary diff information can be supplied later.

[Bug 77458] [edgy] doesn't load usbserial for me

after loading the module manually:

[Bug 76562] Re: newly created documentation isn't valid

That's just a warning and no problem because autogen.sh calls gnome-
autogen.sh which detects GNOME_DOC_INIT in configure.ac and then calls
aclocal with appropriate parameters so that GNOME_DOC_INIT is in

[Bug 76040] Can't use USB pendrives

2006-12-16 Thread Sven Herzberg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

This problem appeared at least on the IBM ThinkPad X41 Tablet and the
Lenovo X60s as they don't have a CD/DVD drive.

I booted the Ubuntu Live System from a USB Pendrive and installed Ubuntu using
the graphical installer.
The installation created a file /etc/fstab with a mount point definition for a
CD/DVD drive (will attach the file).
This file specifies a file system (udf,iso9660).
As the notebooks don't have a CD/DVD drive, plugging in a USB pendrive results
in assigning /dev/sdb to the USB drive.
As the file system is already specified in /etc/fstab, I can't mount the
pendrive as a user and get an error message about a wrong filesystem or bad
superblock.
"sudo mount /dev/sdb /media/usbdisk" works but I don't think that this is the
way it should be.

Removing the last line from /etc/fstab works for me.

[Bug 75303] Re: [edgy] Crashes

2006-12-12 Thread Sven Herzberg
There won't be a backtrace: totem prints this on stderr:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 48 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

However, starting totem with --sync doesn't help as totem complains like this:
Option '--sync' is unknown and was ignored

Not pretty useful, heh?

[Bug 72318] Re: Doesn't update conference server

2006-11-28 Thread Sven Herzberg
Well it's quite easy. You need to have two Jabber accounts having
different default conference servers: jabber.org and google talk both
use conference.jabber.org, but you can try jabber.belnet.be (they seem
to have their own conference server).

The you do this:
1. Open the Buddy List Window
2. Main Menu: Click on Buddies -> Enter Chat
3. Select one of your jabber accounts
4. Take a look at the entered conference server
5. Select the other Jabber account
6. The conference server is still the same
7. Select an ICQ/IRC/etc. Account and the second jabber account again
8. You see the expected server

[Bug 72318] Doesn't update conference server

2006-11-18 Thread Sven Herzberg
Public bug reported:

When I want to start a jabber chat and I don't want to use the first
registered jabber account, switching the conference server to the
default from the second one is very tricky.

Eg. my default server is "conference.somedomain.com". When I change the
account to my googlemail one, the server remains. When I switch to an
IRC account and then back to the googlemail jabber account the default
server switches to "conference.jabber.org".

Proposed solution: As this might be considered "a feature, not a bug",
the GtkEntry should be replaced by a GtkComboBoxEntry with the default
servers so one can easily switch.
