[Bug 563973] [NEW] vsftpd fails to start on boot when using pasv_addr_resolve
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vsftpd On Lucid (this problem probably also exists in Karmic) vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu5 fails to start automatically on boot when pasv_addr_resolve is used. The reason for this is that vsftpd tries to resolve the domain name given in this setting, but eth0 is not yet up at the time vsftpd is called by upstart. The result in syslog: [...] Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process (986) terminated with status 1 Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process ended, respawning Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process (989) terminated with status 1 Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process ended, respawning Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process (992) terminated with status 1 Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process ended, respawning Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd main process (995) terminated with status 1 Apr 15 10:36:30 desktop init: vsftpd respawning too fast, stopped Both; not using pasv_addr_resolve or waiting till eth0 is up fixes the problem. I fixed this by adding IFACE=eth0 to the start conditions in /etc/init/vsftpd.conf, but this assumes eth0 is your default network interface. [Bug 507881] Re: Lucid alpha 2 fails to start up unless you remove /proc/bus/usb from the fstab
I updated from Karmic to Lucid about 12 hours ago and searching the cause for Lucid not booting took a lot of time. It turned out the problem was this very "usbfs" which I put into fstab to get USB working in VirtualBox. And unlike the description of this bug there was no error message hinting to USB; last thing i saw in recovery-mode was how my ext3 filesystems got mounted and then the booting process just stopped. I'm pretty sure a large percentage of VirtualBox users edited fstab the same way and all these users will be left with a black screen after trying to boot their updated system, which might even cause some of them to do a complete reinstall of their system. I suggest that /etc/fstab is parsed during the update process and any lines containing "usbfs" as filesystem should be commented out. -- Lucid alpha 2 fails to start up unless you remove /proc/bus/usb from the fstab https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507881 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 462749] [NEW] vsftpd-2.2.0 (currently in karmic) is affected by pasv_address regression
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: vsftpd vsftpd 2.2.0 kills the connection after client sends PASV, when using "pasv_address" in vsftpd.conf. http://vsftpd.beasts.org/ lists this as a crash regression and i can confirm that vsftpd 2.2.1 fixes the problem for me.
