[Bug 116929] cannot adjust headset volume with keyboard or headset

2007-05-25 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

The controls on my headset and keyboard control some sort of volume dial (a
graphic pops up for this) and both control the
volume that comes out of the speakers (my monitor speakers) but it does not
affect the volume coming out of my headset
(which is connected in one of the USB ports).

Under "Volume Control => Change Device to Headset" I can manually change the
volume setting of my headset and
this succesfully changes the sound level I hear with the headeset. Conversely,
when I check the volume level in
Volume Control (the window you get when you right-click on the sound icon on
the top right of the screen) I can see that
this goes up in down along with adjusting volume with the
keyboard/headset-controls but when I change device to
my headset, the volume bar for this does not go up or down when I use the
keyboard or headset controls for adjusting
volume.

In "System=>Preferences=>Sound" (which is the same as gnome-sound-properties)
the top-level menu options are "Devices", "Sounds" and "System Beep". At the
bottom of the "Devices" window it says,
"Select the device and tracks to control with the keyboard. Use the Shift and
Control keys to select multiple tracks if required."
I select Bass, Treble & PCM for my Plantronics Headset, but again, this does
not make a difference.

To do these test I'm running Skype and both Skype and
System->Preferences->Sound are set to ALSA. Also note that
when playing videos on YouTube the audio is only coming out of my monitor
speakers and not my headset (which is
what I would like) and when I'm using Skype the audio is set to only come out
the headset and not my monitor speakers
(again, this is my preferred setting).

I am using a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) on a Shuttle SD39P2
box.

Here's the asked for output for sound bugs:

[Bug 116929] Re: cannot adjust headset volume with keyboard or headset

2007-05-25 Thread Greg
Here's a screen shot showing that the keyboard controls / headset-controls do
not adjust volume on the headset.
In both of the previous two screen shots the two volume bars matched, in this
screen shot you can see that the
two volume bars do not match. In the first case, the keyboard /
headset-controls are causing both volume bars
to move and they match (this being the volume bar for the speakers) in this
case the volume bar for the headset
isn't moving as a result to keypresses.

Re: [Bug 116929] Re: cannot adjust headset volume with keyboard or headset

2007-05-26 Thread Greg
In System->Preferences->Sound under the "Default Mixer Tracks"
"Device:" there are three options: "HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)",
"Plantronics Headset (Alsa mixer)" and "Realtek ALC888 (OSS Mixer)".
I tried selecting each one of these three options and adjusting the
volume with the keyboard controls. Each time a volume bar pops up and
that moves right/left as I decrease/increase sound but the volume bar
in the Volume Control Panel for the headset does NOT change for any of
them. Also, as I play something in YouTube the sound DOES change from
my monitor speakers.

cheers,
Greg

Re: [Bug 116929] Re: cannot adjust headset volume with keyboard or headset

2007-05-26 Thread Greg
When key-board controlling the volume what happens is:

0: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)
- the PCM bar goes up and down
- Front Mic and Line-in do not.

1: Plantronics Headset (Alsa mixer)
- PCM does not move
- No other bars.

2: Realtek ALC888 (OS Mixer)
- None of the bars for "Volume", "Line-in" or "PCM-2" move.

Re: [Bug 116929] Re: cannot adjust headset volume with keyboard or headset

2007-05-30 Thread Greg
Is the upstream patch file the attachment file you emailed?:
   gnome-control-center_2.18.1-0ubuntu2.2_i386.deb

I've unpacked it (into a directory called "tmp" and dug around inside
but didn't find any "acme-volume-gstreamer.c":
:~/Desktop/tmp$ ls
control
control.tar
data.tar
debian-binary
gnome-control-center_2.18.1-0ubuntu2.2_i386.deb
md5sums
postinst
postrm
shlibs:~/Desktop/tmp$ ls

data.tar
debian-binary
gnome-control-center_2.18.1-0ubuntu2.2_i386.deb
md5sums
postinst
postrm
shlibs
usr

usr

Of the files listed above, only "usr" is a directory and neither it
nor its subdirectories contain the file "acme-volume-gstreamer.c" nor
is there a directory "gnome-settings-daemon".
Also, you reference the file "~/Desktop/Another-updated-patch.txt",
since I don't have any .txt files in the package you emailed, what are
you referring to?

I'm guessing I'm missing something since I'm not familiar with the
terminology.

Hi guys,

I **had** the exact same issue and found how to fix it - well actually
it's running perfectly while i'm listening dire straits with it..

So, I had, too, when launching amarok on cmd line :

Mais tout n'est pas perdu ! Peut-être qu'une mise à jour est déjà disponible et
résoud ce problème. Vérifiez les versions disponibles pour votre distribution.

NB: I already tried all possible fix of this page (deleting amarok
config, reinstalling, ..), no one helped.

So now what I did :

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mv ./.xine/ ._old_.xine

and then:

2007-05-31 Thread Greg
I downloaded the file you pointed to me to and I patched things as
follows:

:~/control-center-2.18.1$ mv control-center_2.18.1-0ubuntu2.2.debdiff
/home/hornby/Desktop/
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/control-center-2.18.1$ patch -p1 <
~/Desktop/control-center_2.18.1-0ubuntu2.2.debdiff
patching file debian/changelog
patching file debian/patches/92_set_mixer_device.patch

Then I executed:
  debuild -b -us -uc
Actually, I did "sudo debuild -b -us -uc" and lots of stuff happened...

I logged out and logged back in and nothing seems to have changed.
I rebooted and logged back in and again, nothing seems to have changed.

2007-06-01 Thread Greg
Hey, that works! The volume controls controlled headset volume and not
speaker volume. Going into System->Preferences->Sound and then
selecting for the Default Mixer Track the HDA Intel then changed things
so that headset/keyboard controls adjust speaker volume and not
headset volume. Success!
thanks,
Greg

Just booted with pci=routeirq, but after that the message (BUG) is still

NB: don't know if this can change anything but actually my MX keyboard

[Bug 106420] Kernel updates broken for LUKs cryptoroot: Failed to find suitable ramdisk generation tool for kernel version

2007-04-13 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

Quick summary: Updating the kernel with apt-get fails with the message

- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=286311

but the advice to remove the mkinitramfs line from /etc/kernel-img.conf
will break LUKs. I know because I tried this after the pervious edgy
kernel update arrived and got an unusable initrd and had to re-install
from scratch :( I have initramfs-tools installed, so
/usr/sbin/mkinitramfs _does_ exist.

I'm hoping the upgrade process hasn't broken my original initrd and I
will still be able to reboot OK

[Bug 241206] Re: On Hardy screen saver never displays

2008-07-20 Thread Greg
I am not certain if this is the same bug, but wihat I am seeing is; the
screesaver wont start after I turn it off, play a GL accelerated game like
FlightGear or SecondLife, then turn it on again.
The screensaver will not start after the set time. The screen begins to fade
but then it goes back to normal and no screensaver. It does this continuously
in serial fashion at the time interval setting for Gnome screensaver to start.
If I logout then in again the screensaver does start at the time I set.
I have also found it happens when I leave the screensaver turned on but start a
media player like VLC, that has simulated mouse click capability to stop a
screensaver starting. When I close this application the screensaver still wont
start.
It has also happened before but not always, if I start playing a streaming
video in flash player, inside a browser. When I do this I turn off the
screensaver because I am not sure flash player has simulated mouse clicking,
then turn it on again after.
I found that none of this problem happens if I login to another user account
even if I leave the normal account still loaded but just switched user.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 (latest updates), a Geforce FX 5700 with the restricted
nvidia driver from Ubuntu repositories.

[Bug 214725] [NEW] "Confirm Security Exception" not working

2008-04-09 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I'm using3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 on my Laptop with Ubuntu Hardy Beta.

Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Encryption -> View Certificates -> Add
Exception -> Enter an URL -> Confirm Security Exception
When I click the last button nothing happens no exception is created and the
menu stays open.

Maybe this is somehow related to this old bug

an exception was created but the menu still stayed open.

[Bug 256238] [NEW] Xscreensaver will not unlock during upgrade

2008-08-08 Thread Greg

[Bug 267411] [NEW] Dirvers are loaded for devices that are disabled in the bios

2008-09-07 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic

Hardware Information:

ASUS A8V Deluxe with VIA chipset with on-board sound (VIA 8237 w/Realtek
ALC 850) which is disabled in the BIOS due to the fact that i have a PCI
sound card installed (Audigy 2).

The problem:

Even though it is disabled, the modules for this card are still loaded
(snd_via82xx,snd_via82xx_modem).

The workaround to this is to add these modules to the blacklist file so
that they are not loaded.

I am running ubuntu 8.10 alpha 5 with the latest updates.

uname -a output:
Linux greg-desktop 2.6.27-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Aug 28 17:20:02 UTC 2008 i686

[Bug 1458197] [NEW] cmake does not execute

2015-05-23 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

trying to do anything involving cmake returns the following.
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-version.c: 224: _dl_check_map_versions:
Assertion `needed != ((void *)0)' failed!

Sometimes accompanied by it saying cmake is not found.

I had this error after upgrading to 15.04, after a few weeks i got tired
of not fixing it and reinstalled fresh. Everything seamed to work then i
had a plasma desktop crash and had to delete the .cache folder.

At the same time i also installed wine1.7, openshot, simple screen
recorder and virtualbox 4.3

Now cmake is giving me the same error and will not do anything.

I tired removing the packages named above and reinstalling cmake but it
had no effect the problem remained.

works fine but this bug needs to be fixed because there is no way to resume to

[Bug 1530502] Re: ASUS Touchpad does not work. Some hotkeys alos don't work

2016-01-04 Thread Greg
This issue did not start happening after an upgrade. Ubuntu 15.10 is
the only version ever install on this machine.

I booted into kernel 4.2.0.16-generic to see if a prior kernel acts
differently. NO CHANGE. The bug exists in the same manner.

I followed the link you provided and I now have booted into the latest
mainline kernel (4.4.0-040400rc7-generic) and the problem is unchanged.
The touchpad is not showing up under `xinput -list` and the message
remains the same in `dmesg | grep pnp`

`[0.867383] i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if
this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp`

See new screenshot

In addition, the airplane mode and screen brightness buttons still do
not work and airplane mode LED stays on. Should this be reported as a
seperate bug?

As you requested, I have added the tag: `kernel-bug-exists-upstream'
and marked bug as `Confirmed`

Thank you so much for your assistance and responses

[Bug 1530502] Re: ASUS Touchpad does not work. Some hotkeys alos don't work

2016-01-04 Thread Greg
With some further digging, I have discovered this is an ELAN1000
touchpad which uses the `i2C` bus instead of the `PS/2` bus which
requires different firmware.

The UX305CA apparently does not even have a PS/2 bus physically
installed. Only the I2C bus.

I'm not sure how much this helps anyone since that sort of thing is over
my head but I thought I would share that.

[Bug 1530502] Re: ASUS (UX305CA) Touchpad does not work.

2016-01-05 Thread Greg
Thank you. I read the instructions but am not entirely clear how to do
so. Am I simply emailing the people mentioned from my own email account
or am I filling out an online form and sending it to them?

Also, I tried to look at the kernel.org directory but could not find an
email for Dimitry Torokhov or linux-input. The instructions were very
in depth about format of my message but was not clear on how I actually
send the message or what the email addresses were.

I also read that the message must be in plain text and not html. I'm
not sure how to tell if my email service is using one or the other and
how to toggle it. Can anyone help me on this?

Lastly, I noticed a new upstream mainline kernel was just posted to the
archive today so I will boot into that first to see if any progress has
been made.

[Bug 1530502] Re: ASUS (UX305CA) Touchpad does not work.

2016-01-05 Thread Greg
UPDATE: I found email addresses for linux-input, linux-i2c, and I found
one for Dmitry Torokhov but it's a gmail account. Shouldn't I be
sending this to a kernel.org account??

Ignore my question about html vs. plain text. I did a google search and
figured it out.

I have not yet booted into the newest (rc8) upstream kernel but will do
so before sending the email. Can anyone let me know if the gmail
account I found for Dmitry Torokhov is appropriate?

This is resolved by installing gcc4.9 and setting it up as an

[Bug 1530502] [NEW] ASUS Touchpad does not work. Some hotkeys alos don't work

2016-01-01 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

ASUS UX305-CA laptop with a clean install of Ubuntu 15.10 and touchpad
will not work at all. It acts like it isn't even there.

This is a dual-boot and touchpad works fine on Windows 10. Appears to
be an Elantech touchpad according to driver details in windows but
nothing in Ubuntu lists the touchpad.

xinput -list shows no touchpad at all, just a virtual core XTEST pointer
and my wireless mouse.

Notice this message under dmesg | grep pnp:

[0.839653] i8042: PNP: PS/2 appears to have AUX port disabled, if
this is incorrect please boot with i8042.nopnp

Also, the airplane mode key, which is F2, does not work and the LED will not
shut off as if it is permanently in airplane mode but it is not.

Screen brightness keys also don't work but I can work around that.

[Bug 927441] Re: Far left character in panel (and launcher popups) distorted

2012-03-21 Thread greg
I think I figured this out. libnux does some elaborate adjustments to
texture coordinates to make sure texels are always sampled at the
midpoint, for clean nearest sampling, but this is wrong: the fragment
sampling grid already ensures that! So the elaborate adjustment does the
opposite: the sampling positions are moved to the boundaries between the
texels, and that is why we're seeing this flaky behavior with different
hardware.

[Bug 927441] Re: Far left character in panel (and launcher popups) distorted

2012-03-21 Thread greg
Here's Unity with linear sampling forced. The blurryness is a clear sign
that centered sampling is not working, as that would yield a result
similar to nearest sampling.

[Bug 871580] Re: wifi lock-up with brcmsmac and broadcom bcm4313

2012-01-09 Thread Greg
I had this problem on Oneiric and found installing the 3.1.8 kernel from
the mainline repo fixed it (I tried a few other kernel versions that
also didn't work). Network connectivity now seems fine and I've been
running a ping for a long time with minimal packet loss and no buffer
error messages.

Is that an option now? The installer didn't let me install to the raid
array before and I have been reluctant to try again since it screwed things
up so badly before.

[Bug 995169] [NEW] master output volume doesn't affect actual volume

2012-05-05 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

The pulseaudio volume control (master "output volume" in sound settings,
or the volume applet/keys) does not seem to affect the catual playback
volume of my headphone output. The application-specific volume control
in the sound settings does change the volume as expected.

As far as I can tell, the actual output volume is 100% for any volume
setting except "mute", which works.

The motherboard's rear audio out gets its volume changed as expected.

This was fine before I upgraded from oneric to precise.

[Bug 987674] Re: Dash maximise button changed location

2012-05-01 Thread greg
I have latest precise-proposed with updated Unity 5.12 installed. I'm
seeing blur update problems in addition to the shifted maximize button.
This might be related to the fact that I'm using a netbook with GMA 950
graphics, which forces the non-GLSL codepath in Nux. I can reliably
reproduce this bug after a restart of Unity.

It's hard to describe, take a look at the screenshot.

Re: [Bug 1015267] Re: X server freezes: NULL pointer deferenced

2014-01-08 Thread Greg
I use Ubuntu 13.10 daily with an AMD proprietary driver, and I have not
seen this bug recently. I don't remember how I worked around this bug, but
I suspect it was to switch to the fglrx-updates driver.

[Bug 1195705] Re: fglrx kernel module fails to build on kernel 3.10 [error: implicit declaration of function ‘create_proc_entry’]

2013-12-20 Thread Greg
I have the same bug installing Catalyst 13.12 official release of AMD
driver. My kernel is 3.11.0-14-generic in Ubuntu 13.10.

[Bug 1258870] Re: rtl8188ee wireless driver unusable: 25-30% packet loss. 13.10 Saucy

2013-12-30 Thread Greg
I tried installing the latest proprietary driver and firmware, although
I had to use Freedom Ben's modified version:

https://github.com/FreedomBen/rtl8188ce-linux-driver

since the code provided by Realtek doesn't even compile with any kernel
after 2.9 :(

Anyway, that didn't help. Continued to experience large amounts of
packet loss, up to 80%. I eventually just bought a new card with good
linux support for $24, and I'd suggest anyone trying to make this card
work on linux just do the same. More details documented here:

http://ilostmynotes.blogspot.com/2013/12/windows-8-and-
ubuntu-1304-with.html

As expected, the new card works perfectly: 0% loss using the same
network, access point, sitting in the same position in the room etc.
It's easy to blame bugs like these on RF signal problems, interference
etc. but in this case the performance of the driver is just terrible. I
dual boot windows and it seemed OK there, but I didn't use it
extensively.

[Bug 1258870] [NEW] rtl8188ee wireless driver unusable: 25-30% packet loss. 13.10 Saucy

2013-12-07 Thread Greg
Public bug reported:

I'm seeing a consistent packet loss problem with the rtl8188ee Realtek
wireless driver. Long sequences of pings to the access point IP show
25-30% packet loss. Downloads get 'stuck', pages don't load, it's
generally unusable.

I've tried the following kernels:

/boot/initrd.img-3.11.0-12-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.12.3-031203-generic
/boot/initrd.img-3.11.0-14-generic /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-031300rc3-generic

all with the same result. Packet capture shows lots of dup ACKs, some
retransmits.

I suspected 802.11n might be the culprit, but I've disabled it at the
AP, and the driver seems to respect that judging by these log lines:

Dec 7 21:50:52 congo kernel: [13812.218008] rtl8188ee :01:00.0 wlan0:
disabling HT as WMM/QoS is not supported by the
AP
Dec 7 21:50:52 congo kernel: [13812.218011] rtl8188ee :01:00.0 wlan0:
disabling VHT as WMM/QoS is not supported by the
 AP

Other than those lines there isn't anything noteworthy in syslog.

Very interested in getting this fixed, please let me know how I can help
debug.

I attempted unity 8 because after upstart I have no launcher ,

creating anew folder, in the center of my screen, using nautilus. Then I
went to /usr/share/applications to use the system.

2014-06-18 Thread Greg
I downloaded and installed libgphoto2-6_2.5.3.1-1ubuntu2.2, same as
chicobiker in comment #75. My camera is now recognized and can open
photos in either nemo file manager or gthumb. This is in Linux Mint 17
Quiana, Cinnamon. My camera is Kodack Easyshare C1013.

[Bug 491846] Re: Opening link in new tab freezes Firefox and makes computer unusable

2013-08-02 Thread Greg
Stangely, the exact same symptoms have been happening for me after the
upgrade from 12.04 to 13.04. Once in a while the same thing: new Firefox
tab, loads for a second, and Gnome/X freezes. Mouse cursor moves, and
processes seem to keep running.

I can still SSH into the box. Killing processes doesn't seem to bring
down X and I have to reboot.

Almost nothing in our setup is the same: amd64, AMD video, 13.04,
Firefox 22, kernel 3.8.0.

[Bug 706063] Re: Nvidia GT240 compatibility issue

2013-04-22 Thread greg
This is still a problem with 13.04.

Please just apply the patch. This problem is well documented and while
upstream is unresponsive the patch is known to fix this. I hope Ubuntu
developers know how frustrating this has been. It is a critical bug (the
system won't even boot properly), there is a simple and known working
fix available, yet nothing ever happens.

[Bug 1388487] Re: MATLAB crashes when IPOPT converges to machine precision

2014-11-02 Thread Greg
It sounds like this bug is unrelated to the coinor-ipopt package in
ubuntu, is that correct? Do you have the libcoinor-ipopt package
installed? You might try uninstalling it if you do. As MATLAB is
proprietary software this is difficult to debug.

Can you provide a stack trace of the crash?
