I'm using i8kutils on Dell XPS 9560 with a fresh installed Ubuntu 16.04.2 Kernel 4.8 and I managed to set it up and make it work, but it was tricky. One problem was that to make it work it was necessary to download the package sources, compile and move the "smm" utility to /usr/local/bin as that doesn't ship as a binary with the package. The smm utility is needed to enable/disable the fan handling from the BIOS. I've created a couple of scripts to switch between BIOS and i8kmon fan control. Be careful with smm as it writes on hardware registers and if misused can potentially create troubles or even damage, in fact if you turn off bios fan management the effects of the command survive a reboot, if you plan to boot another OS enable BIOS fan control. - I8KUTILS fan control - #!/bin/bash sudo smm 30a3 sudo service i8kmon start - BIOS fan control - #!/bin/bash sudo service i8kmon stop sudo smm 31a3 The Dell XPS 9560 has 2 fans so this is my custom /etc/i8kmon.conf # Temperature thresholds: {fan_speeds low_ac high_ac low_batt high_batt} # These were tested on the I8000. [Bug 1067543] Re: Add comapt-wireless v3.6 stack to Quantal LBM
I'm not sure this bug refers to the same problem I'm seeing. Precise received 3.5 kernel from Quantal, but linux-backports-modules- cw-3.x-3.5 in precise-backports repositories seem to be missing, there are CW backports for 3.2 kernel ranging from 3.3 up to 3.8, but nothing for the 3.5 series kernel. I've a laptop (HP 650) which needs at least 3.6 cw to get wi-fi working, had to manually download and install a CW 3.6-3.5 .deb package from Quantal repositories, it works fine but a manual download and install is needed at every kernel update. [Bug 856892] Re: Please support a completely black second screen
This enhancement is needed for sure in live show environments. We can't use Ubuntu with Unity in gigs and generally in any other place that's not an office environment. In a theatrical show or a concert you never want to risk displaying any OS interface element in any case, never ever, there are poetics requirements there! Hiding the menu bar when a full screen application is running is not enough, we never know what's going to happen in a live show, a scheduled scene may suddenly change for any kind of problem, we may need to relaunch an application with different parameters, our experimental applications may also crash, and we are subject to human errors too... in any of these cases a black projected canvas is the most desiderable transitional failure! ;) I'm all for an option to disable or hide launcher, menu, notifications and any possibile OS interface element from secondary monitors. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/856892 Title: Please support a completely black second screen To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/856892/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 748539] Re: Multi-monitor - Panel and launcher visible on top of multimonitor non-focused fullscreen apps
@johnlea; I'm not sure the proposed bug solution is enough for live show issues. Imagine you need to restart the controlling application for some reason, a simple device change, a crash or whatever. With the proposed solution, once the fullscreen projected app is closed the OS interface would be visible to the public. In a gig you really don't want to risk this and eventually having an option 'by design' is the most desiderable solution. About the Launcher, I know and make use of the option to switch it off and place it on monitors, it works well and I like it, thanks to the team that implemented that! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/748539 Title: Multi-monitor - Panel and launcher visible on top of multimonitor non- focused fullscreen apps To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/748539/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 748539] Re: Multi-monitor - Panel and launcher visible on top of multimonitor non-focused fullscreen apps
Good to see this issue is gaining priority. When looking for solutions please consider that in live sets there are situations where you never want to risk projecting the OS interface on the secondary output, even when there's no fullscreen app on that. [Bug 751605] Re: maximizing windows in a dualscreen setup goes awry
This happens in Precise too, but I think it's not only related to having monitors with different resolutions, in fact sometimes the window is correctly maximized to the smaller monitor. The bug is triggered when you try to maximize a window that is taller or larger than the monitor you're trying to maximize the window to, such when you drag a maximized window from a bigger monitor to the smaller and the automatically restored unmaximized window size is bigger on one of the two dimensions in respect to the monitor you're dragging the window to. [Bug 954021] Re: composited desktop environments wont autoload from gdm/lightdm when using i915
My laptop is an HP DV6-6169sl (Intel HD Graphics 3000 + AMD 6770M). Restarting Unity also did the trick for me for Unity 3D except some issues with right click (eg: no effect on desktop background or unity launcher, while is ok on nautilus). With an updated, unmodified 12.04 beta + Catalyst 12.2 (.deb packages self created with AMD installer ) I'm seeing progress with Multi GPU switching, below what I've found so far: * Unity 3D doesn't work at login with integrated GPU: X starts but there's no menu bar and no unity bar. When using just the laptop display I can't see any file, and right click has no effect. When using multiple monitors I can see and open files on the desktop but windows are without any decoration, right click shows context menu. In either case CTRL+ALT+CANC shows a dialog to logout, so I can login again with Unity 2D. DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-shell --replace starts Unity but I'm seeing some issues with right mouse clicks (right click on the desktop background or unity launcher has no effect...) * Unity 2D with integrated GPU is almost perfect: Using multiple monitors with different resolution you need to top align theme, otherwise the shortest monitor doesn't show the menu bar. glxgears works Code: glxgears Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate. 347 frames in 5.0 seconds = 69.030 FPS 320 frames in 5.3 seconds = 60.008 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.000 FPS 300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.993 FPS * Unity 2D with discrete GPU: With a single display seems ok. With a second external HDMI display I can get the menubar on the FULLHD secondary monitor only if is right aligned in respect to the laptop monitor (no menu bar on top, but unity bar is ok). Code: glxgears 1851 frames in 5.0 seconds = 370.177 FPS 3362 frames in 5.0 seconds = 672.191 FPS 2165 frames in 5.0 seconds = 432.971 FPS 2221 frames in 5.0 seconds = 444.170 FPS * Unity 3D with discrete GPU: With a single display, either internal or external seems ok. With a second display sort of works if the secondary external FullHD monitor is on right of the laptop monitor, in this case I'm seeing 2 Unity launch bars, one for each monitor, but when widows are maximized they span across both monitors. Code: glxgears 2608 frames in 5.0 seconds = 521.010 FPS 2595 frames in 5.0 seconds = 518.740 FPS 2602 frames in 5.0 seconds = 519.889 FPS 2601 frames in 5.0 seconds = 519.312 FPS -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/954021 Title: composited desktop environments wont autoload from gdm/lightdm when using i915 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/954021/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 889466] Re: dead desktop area using dual monitors with different resolution
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 running-unity ubuntu ** Description changed: while this long standing problem has been mitigated with some previous work and patches (eg: #389519) at least keeping the mouse away from the dead area, the desktop behaviour is far from being precise still. when using a couple of monitors with different vertical resolution, icons can easily get lost on the shortest monitor, to reproduce the bug just put on the shortest monitor enough icons to exceed a single column, click on the desktop with the right mouse button and then "organize desktop by name". another issue is with compiz corner hotspots bindings, they are never triggered if there's a dead area above or below theme, it depends on where your shortest display is aligned in respect of the tallest (top or bottom margin), to reproduce try for example to bind the "Show Desktop" action on a corner of the shortest display. lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 11.10 Release: 11.10 + --- + .tmp.unity.support.test.0: + + ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu4 + Architecture: amd64 + CompizPlugins: [core, bailer, detection, composite, opengl, decor, vpswitch, snap, gnomecompat, imgpng, mousepoll, compiztoolbox, wall, grid, move, obs, regex, place, unitymtgrabhandles, resize, animation, workarounds, session, fade, expo, scale, ezoom, unityshell] + CompositorRunning: compiz + DistUpgraded: Fresh install + DistroCodename: oneiric + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 + DistroVariant: ubuntu + DkmsStatus: + fglrx, 8.902, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed + vboxhost, 4.1.6, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed + virtualbox, 4.1.2, 3.0.0-12-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! On maverick merkat final, sometimes I've no window borders or decorations just after boot. compiz --replace solves the problem for the whole session.
