[Bug 2078925] [NEW] onboard keyboard crashes
Public bug reported: Since the installation of Ubuntu 24.04 the onboard keyboard on the login screen crashes when I click on it. Some keys on my Dell keyboard do not function so without the onboard keyboard I need to plug in an external keyboard to type my password which is very inconvenient. I tried changing the setting from Xinput to GTK which did not help. It worked fine in Ubuntu 22.04. Once I am logged in I can use the on-screen keyboard which although somewhat buggy does not crash. I followed your steps but just encountered the same errors I previously had. I have both the kernel 5.4 and 5.8 installed, but nvidia-340 can't be installed with the 5.8, and I am unable to login with the 5.8. I read elsewhere that nvidia is no longer providing support for its legacy drivers. A developer has provided patches for some of the Ubuntu's but not yet apparently for 20.10. I also commented on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-340/+bug/1872950?comments=all and other people have the same issues. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 20.10 without realizing this problem with the nvidia-340.108 . The upgrade failed to install this driver with the 5.8 kernel that comes with the upgrade. Fortunately, I still have the 5.4 kernel that is compatible. I have a Dell Inspiron 1400 with legacy GPU GeForce 8400M GS. Re: [Bug 1849055] Re: gnome-extensions fails to load after boot
The extensions do load when I enable them.?? The problem is that after a reboot they are not enabled and I need to do it by hand. [Bug 1175938] [NEW] Lightdm fails to display login screen
Public bug reported: This problem started after upgrading Ubuntu 12.10 which worked fine to Ubuntu 13.04. After booting, my Dell inspiron 1420 reaches an all purple screen without login. Ctrl-Alt-F1 gives a purple screen with blinking cursor and the words "starting up" Ctrl-Alt-F2 yields a console terminal where I can access unity with "startx". I needed to update the Nvidia driver to 319 for "startx" to work. The /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log is the following: [+0.00s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting Light Display Manager 1.6.0, UID=0 PID=11107 [+0.00s] DEBUG: Loaded configuration from /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf [+0.00s] DEBUG: Using D-Bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+0.00s] DEBUG: Using Xephyr for X servers [+0.00s] DEBUG: Registered seat module xlocal [+0.00s] DEBUG: Registered seat module xremote [+0.00s] DEBUG: Adding default seat [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting seat [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting new display for greeter [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting local X display [+0.00s] DEBUG: Using VT 7 [+0.00s] DEBUG: Activating VT 7 [+1.88s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/x-1.log [+1.88s] DEBUG: Writing X server authority to /var/run/lightdm/root/:1 [+1.88s] DEBUG: Launching X Server [+1.88s] DEBUG: Launching process 3: /usr/bin/Xephyr :1 -core -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:1 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch [+1.88s] DEBUG: Waiting for ready signal from X server :1 [+1.88s] DEBUG: Acquired bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager [+1.88s] DEBUG: Registering seat with bus path /org/freedesktop/DisplayManager/Seat0 [+1.93s] DEBUG: Process 3 exited with return value 1 [+1.93s] DEBUG: X server stopped [+1.93s] DEBUG: Removing X server authority /var/run/lightdm/root/:1 [+1.93s] DEBUG: Releasing VT 7 [+1.93s] DEBUG: Display server stopped [+1.93s] DEBUG: Stopping display [+1.93s] WARNING: Error opening /dev/console: Input/output error [+1.94s] DEBUG: Stopping seat, failed to start a display [+1.94s] DEBUG: Stopping seat [+1.94s] DEBUG: Seat stopped [+1.94s] DEBUG: Required seat has stopped [+1.94s] DEBUG: Stopping display manager [+1.94s] DEBUG: Display manager stopped [+1.94s] DEBUG: Stopping daemon [+1.94s] DEBUG: Exiting with return value 1 I have tried reinstalling lightdm, gdm, ubuntu-desktop, and xserver-xorg as well as editing the /etc/init/lightdm. [Bug 1174950] [NEW] login page is purple without login
Public bug reported: My computer is a Dell inspiron 1420 laptop Since upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 I have encountered many bugs. Most importantly after booting up I reach an all purple page without login. Hitting ctrl-alt-F1 reaches a page with the words "starting up" and a blinking cursor. Hitting ctrl-alt-F2 gives a desktop terminal. After installing the latest Nvidia driver 319 I am able to use "startx" to access the Unity GUI. Once there I am forced every time to authenticate the login keyring. Many of the apps fail to open. These include the software center, ubuntu one, and unity-tweak. The software updater will open only after authentication and does not load repositories. There is no suspend option on the top rightmost menu and the shutdown option is the same as the logout option. If I "sudo startx" the menu options include suspend, hibernate, and the shutdown option is configured correctly with a restart option. I have followed many suggestions on ubuntu forums and ask ubuntu to try to fix lightdm or gdm including purging and reinstalling but to no avail. I have cleaned out excess files with the ubuntu-tweak-janitor and there does not appear to be a space problem. When I made a change to lightdm the first time I used "sudo lightdm service restart" I was able to reach a normal purple screen with the login included, but after that it reverted to the buggy version without login upon reboot. After a reboot when I use startx to reach Unity, there is "user name" rather than my name on the top rightmost menu and it is locked. After I authenticate the keyring, a few minutes later, my name appears and the buggy menu is unlocked. The user accounts app is also not working. I tried to add a login key to the seahorse app but it disappeared after a reboot. I have never had these kinds of problems with other Ubuntu upgrades. Re: [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749
Suspend/hibernation has been fixed in the latest version of Ubuntu 11.10 on my computer Dell inspiron 1420. From: Joseph Salisbury To: julesf...@yahoo.com Sent: Friday, October 21, 2011 1:17 PM Subject: [Bug 748994] Re: suspend hibernation not working on dell 1749 Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the others). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.1-rc9 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed- upstream-v3.1-rc9'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.
