i cannot update, because - the lifecd of 7.04 does not allow sudo chroot -- i think this is a bug, because it makes the life cd not usable for rescue operations - apt seems to have changed configuration between 6.10 (what i am currently running) and 7.04 as the location of the look file is changed from /var/lib/apt/lists to var/lib. i am afraid other aspects have changed too.. where is the configuration file for apt? i think here is a bug in apt: after chroot apt should read the configuration from the current root file system. -- i have posted the lspci already (made from a 6.10 kernel) thank you for your help andrew ps. before i install 7.04 afresh - what is the recommended approach to install more than one ubuntu on the same disk? any hint to documentation? thanks a lot! -- Andrew U. I was able to install the edgy kernel by the LiveCd and then I've updated to the kernel 2.6.20-15, it works! The same error after the upgrade with kernel 2.6.20-14, I can't boot anymore! Booting in recovery mode the error is: Check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/34e997f8-8586-4701-8e88-1841ed81fee7 does not esist. Dropping to a shell! I've already checked che uuid number and the file fstab but is all alright. Waiting for the fix, can someone help me to install the old kernel? The output of lspci, if the numeric switch is used, is the same regardless of what kernel version you are using. The 2.6.20-15 version of the kernel should be available now.
