[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2011-02-25 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I've just tested the file attached to this bug (coqspi-sn.pdf) on
Maverick 10.10 (evince 2.32.0-0ubuntu1, libpoppler7 0.14.3-0ubuntu1) and
as Nathan said the problem seems to have been resolved. Print to file
generated a postscript file that was 6.4Mbytes big rather than the
26Mbytes it was previously generating on Lucid.

Whether this fix should be backported to Lucid is a different issue - I
would guess it depends on how invasive the libpoppler patch that fixed
it is...

2011-02-24 Thread Nathan Grennan
Can we get something higher than Low on this bug? For me it causes a
copier to crash consistently. The fix in code already exists, it just
needs to be back ported to Lucid.

Amen this needs to be backported to Lucid. It's the LTS release and we
have no plans to upgrade our environments until the next LTS release.

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2011-02-22 Thread Nathan Grennan
This is basically my bug, linked below. It is fixed in Maverick and
Natty. The best I could tell it is probably poppler, in that I could use
Lucid's version of evince, and it was still small.

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2011-02-22 Thread Nathan Grennan
I just tried okular and acroread with a known problematic pdf. Okular
was consistently bad between Lucid and Maverick, with a job size of 24mb
for a certain 75 page pdf. Where as evince on Lucid was 51mb for the
same document. Then evince on Maverick was a nice 13mb. Acroread on
Lucid was 69mb.

2010-05-09 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
Still here on Lucid.

Version information:
Ubuntu 10.04
evince 2.30.0-0ubuntu1
libpoppler5 0.12.4-0ubuntu4

This is unlikely to be the upstream bug that has been marked as fixed...

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2009-10-29 Thread Robert Hrovat
I had to print some 2 page PDF reports during a meeting. It took 15
minutes and meeting ended before first page came out!!! It was so
embarrassing in front of people that seemed interested on what they've
seen in Ubuntu.

Using Karmic with all latest updates and it was about the same in Jaunty
or just a bit faster. Printer is Kyocera FS-1030D, but the I get the
same results with Canon Pixma printers and Kyocera FS-9210DN which is
the fastest printer at work.

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2009-10-17 Thread Ryan Tucker
I have run into this problem with LyX-generated PDF files of 5-6 pages,
with some amount of math and graphics; given that the example document
is rather TeXish, I wonder if there's a connection...

Using karmic:
evince 2.28.0-0ubuntu5: 20350k
epdfview 0.1.7-2: 6961k

Still beefy, but now I have epdfview installed and can use that as a
workaround :-)

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2009-01-06 Thread Guglielmo Cola
I'm using Intrepid Ibex and Evince 2.24.1.

I tried to print your pdf and got this:
Evince's JOB = 25429k !!! I took ages for the printing icon to appear.
Using epdfview or okular I got a normal job: 6961k.

This problem appears with many pdf files on my system and causes
printing process to be really slow and sometimes to abort. Everything
works fine with epdfview and okular.

I do believe this bug is important for the ubuntu community, because
evince is the default pdf reader.

[Bug 188973] Re: printing pdf causes abnormally large job

2008-02-28 Thread TerryG
Thanks for your bug submission. I was able to verify. Print-to-file
(postscript):
-rw-r--r-- 1 tgalati4 tgalati4 3053363 2008-02-28 15:33 math_paper_test.ps
This means that the postscript version of the file is only 3.05 MB. I was
using evince 2.20.1 on gutsy.

But when I turned my printer off and submitted the job (because I really didn't
want to print it out, I just wanted to check the print queue). 26.3 MB! Using
acroread (version 8) the print file was 18.56 MB. If your printer doesn't have
enough onboard memory, then it's possible that you will have print problems.

These tests were done with an HP 7110 Officejet.

Don't have any KDE machines handy to test (not booted anyway).

Since acroread is proprietary, it's doubtful we'll ever know what tricks
were used to shrink file size. At least you have a work around.
