However, since writing the above and providing the image, I found bug #190848. Since my issue was only with gnome-terminal, I think that bug is the problem I was having. It's further explained in the referenced http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142640 Basically, gnome- terminal was ignoring some font settings. If you go to /etc/fonts/conf.d, to you have a symlink to 10-hinting-full or to 10-hinting-medium? This does not affect Firefox though.
