[Bug 32178] Re: Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions.
It didn't really make sense to me either but it did work. I had tried restarting the installation 3 or 4 times before I changed the mount point. The moment it was not top-level it worked. Maybe it was a coincidence though. Only the NTFS partition was affected by this behavior. This is not same Ubuntu forum post that led me to the workaround (I looked but could not find it) but I believe it describes the same problem and "solution": http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=596682 While looking for the original post, I also found some other people perhaps having the same issue. Maybe they could be asked to try the workaround to see if it makes a difference. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=810195 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=801398 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=949558 Although, the posts are quite old now. -- Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It sounds like sheer coincidence to me ... Have you tried to simulate the problem? You should try with various partition types: FAT, NTFS, XFS,... First you try to mount them on a top-level directory that is *not* one of the usual /etc /bin /usr /var ... but something else like /windows /mydata /thisisatest ... Then you try to mount the same partition on /media/windows /media/mydata /media/thisisatest Ramon Rocha claims that the first approach won't work, and the second will work. It is unfortunate that he did not provide a link to the forum topic where he found the solution. -- Amedee -- Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It doesn't make sense to *me* that the mount point would make the slightest difference here, so I'm not going to make this change until I see some reasoning for it. [Bug 32178] Re: Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions.
Hello, I also experience this bug and found a work-around on the ubuntu forums. If you try to mount it as a "top-level" location, it will not work. However, mounting under another existing location worked. For example: setting mount to "/windows" did not work but setting mount to "/media/windows" did work. -- Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

If I'm not mistaken, the installer suggests /windows as a mount point, not /media/windows. What you write, makes sense. In that case this is indeed a bug of the installer, and it should be changed so that the by default sugested mount point is more sensible. -- Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/32178 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 32178] Re: Installer couldn't mount NTFS partitions.
Also experienced this bug, with the Alternate CD installer of Ubuntu 7.10. At first I thought maybe the NTFS filesystem was corrupted, so we did a defrag, clean up temporary files, and force CHKDSK, and retried the Ubuntu install, but with the same results. After about a dozen attempts with varies things, eventually I decided to say "do not use this partition" so we could continue with the installation. After the system was installed, I checked the blkid and added the appropriate line in /etc/fstab and it mounted fine, so it seems to be specific to how the installer uses it.
