[Bug 345189] Re: MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units
It is still completely unclear to me why this change is pursued at all. This negates the whole "automatic DPI detection" and goes against good desktop display practices: Basically what you are saying is that the font size should be set as device dependent (exact pixel size) even though you do not know anything about the device! A pixel size setting will only work if you compute it correctly against the actual device DPI - which you can't know in advance: a default setting of 13.333px will work great on 96DPI devices, but if my device is 86 DPI it will look too big. Worse - if the DPI is hardset to 96 (as it was before the auto detection), and I fix this to the actual DPI of my device (for example - after reading the manual that came with my screen), the font size will not change as it is set to a physical px size instead of device independent point size. I think this is bad practice - choosing the correct pixel size for a font is the job of the rendering infrastructure (after checking the device's DPI and the required point size) and not the job of the vendor. -- MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 345189] Re: MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units
Alexander, the problem is that the window and desktop font is set at 10px while other fonts are set as 13.333px. All is "px". The result is that the text looks disproportioned between the application and the window title as can be seen in the last couple of screenshots. Worse - if you look at a nautilus window vs. icons on the desktop they look very different even though its the same application showing the same thing (files). Moreover, I'd like to note that the text box I'm currently writing this text in is specified as having font sized at 10pt (not pixels) and I think (from my experience reading things on computer screens over the years) that Firefox renders it faithfully. If you'll look in the screenshot you'd notice that the text looks radically different then the one nautilus renders which is clearly way too big. However the text size in this text box pretty much matches up to the text size of the window title which is currently set (as by default) to "10" (whatever that is in the GNOME font properties dialog). [Not that it matters, but this display is currently set to 86dpi by Ubuntu automatic DPI magic thing] What I'm saying is that there are two major issues in this regression ticket: 1. GNOME defaults use two different font sizes: 10 and 13.333 for no apparent reason and it looks horrible. 2. Apparently most application on the GNOME desktop render the font as if the number was specified in points and not pixels, and as a result the font is rendered way too bit. On my desktop this currently includes Metacity and Nautilus, GNOME control-center applications and a few more. Lastly, there seems to be a related problem with the font preferences dialog: when you first load it, the font sizes are specified as 13.333 (not for all, as noted) but when you want to change it there is no option for 13.333 to change it back. Worse - if you type 13.333 manually in the "font size" box and click "OK", the text in the application suddenly grows by 33%. So it looks like even the GNOME font properties dialog doesn't know that the font size is measured suddenly in pixels. Font sizes in GNOME have always been in points and are still so in all applications (except perhaps those that were modified during this discussion) - why was this change suddenly introduced? it doesn't make any sense. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot.png" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24249798/Screenshot.png -- MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 345189] Re: MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units
its not an update manager issue, but rather a gtk or maybe pango one. The problem seems to be that scaled tags (small, big, etc.) for markup eliminates the absolute flag from its base size somehow. I contacted pango developer to get a better idea where this issue comes from. Anyway, keeping update-manager in the bug (as invalid) as its useful to QA our changes. ** Also affects: gtkhtml3.8 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: gtkhtml3.14 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: gtkhtml3.14 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: gtkhtml3.14 (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: gtkhtml3.8 => gtkhtml3.14 Assignee: (unassigned) => Alexander Sack (asac) ** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Alexander Sack (asac) -- MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 345189] Re: MASTER regression after switching system font size to 13.333 pixel - fonts appear too large in some apps that do hand made font sizing - treating pixel units as point units
I think the main problem is that the default font size is now 13.333 for most fonts except for "Desktop Font" and "Window Title" where it is 10. This causes the weird behavior see in Chris Coulson's screen shot ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgnome/+bug/345189/comments/26 ) where the icons on the desktop and the icons in Nautilus (drawn by the same application) have different sized text. Aside from that, I think that unless nautilus is also broken and uses way too big fonts for the definition of 13.333px, this definition is not a good default and should be reverted back to 10px (which looks really nice on my 96dpi display, and have always been). Also, just as a side note, in MS-Windows the default desktop font size is even smaller then 10px (or equivalent, I'm not sure how MS-Windows font-sizes map to GNOME's) and a lot of people I talked with are complaining that the fonts are too big when they move from MS-Windows to GNOME.
