@Jorge: I'm subscribing you to this one. Can you please put those info
in u.u.c and set the unity task as won't fix one done? Thanks :)

Re: [Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-12 Thread Mark Shuttleworth

David, thanks for the mockup.

As I said, I think this proposal has a steep hill to climb in terms of
the likely clutter vs value assessment.

In particular, we're starting to look more closely at the relationship
between the launcher and workspaces. That means we need to be thinking
not only of the windows of this app but also fo the windows of this
app per workspace. Adding minimised / maximised state to this is a
bridge too far, imo.

Nevertheless, good work on the concept and mockup. Thank you for that!

So, the decision is *not* to proceed with this idea.

I think this decision should be documented. The proposal, the mockup,
the key elements of the discussion, and the decision should be reflected
on unity.ubuntu.com. That will serve as a reference for future folks
considering the same, or similar ideas, in Unity or in other projects
like Gnome Shell. They might come to a different conclusion, or we might
revisit the subject ourselves, and such a document would be valuable
either way. David, if you care to put it together, we can ask Jorge to
put it on the site.

John, will you setup a structure on unity.ubuntu.com where we document
designs and design decisions, together with Jorge? And figure out how we
can make it easy to keep that up to date. It's a Wordpress site, so we
should be able to create new pages easily enough.

 status wontfix

Mark

[Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-11 Thread David Callé
Why would we need to differentiate minimized from other open windows?
What does it bring to justify the visual clutter that such a differentiation
would induce?

[Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-11 Thread David Prieto
So that the launcher helps you quickly identify what open windows you
have onscreen, even if they're partially hidden behind other windows.

Please notice that in my previous message I talk about shown windows.
this might mean differentiating windows that are visible (that is,
unminimised and in the current workspace) from others that are not
visible (either minimised or in another workspace) and that, therefore,
you shouldn't bother looking for.

 importance low

I think this is worth considering. It would need to be subtle. David, go
ahead and work up some mockups. I think there's a very low chance of
success, as it feels a little anorak to make a big deal of the window
state in this way, but if it feels natural we can include it.

[Bug 688828] Re: Visually indicate minimised windows

2010-12-11 Thread David Prieto
Mark, I've done a quick, simple mockup considering these points:

- Left arrows show the number of open windows, up to three.
- Left arrows which are on show the number of shown windows, also up to three.

Thus, in the mockup:

- The launcher to the left indicates that there are at least three open windows
(might be any number beyond that) and that at least three of them are shown.
- The one in the middle indicates that there are at least three open, but only
one of them is shown.
- The one to the right tells us that none of the open windows is shown.
