Yes the problem lies in lack of w permission on the folder containing the photo. That is, although the photo did have the w permission, and was owned by me. I didn't know about this "copy" feature of shotwell. Now that I gave w permission to the folder, and Gimp opened the photo, I noticed the filename shown by Gimp has a "_modified" postfix. I was wandering what this meant, and now it's all clear. May I suggest giving a clearer error message instead of just an "access denied" error ? Something that would explain what the program is trying to do and why it can't do it. E.g. "Can't create copy of in folder . Reason: access denied. For more information clik (url pointing to a page or help file where the mechanism is explained)." My 2 cents. Thank you very much for your timely and helpful support. Aha! When you select Edit with External Editor in Shotwell, it creates a copy of the master file and launches GIMP to edit that file. That way, your masters remains pristine. It looks to me that the directory your image is in (/home/marcello/Immagini/Foto ordinate per giorno/2010-07-28 - Concerto Cisco e Mondine a Novi di Modena/) is write-protected or you do not have permissions to write to it. Can you run Shotwell from the console window like so: $ SHOTWELL_LOG=1 shotwell Then choose Open with External Editor. First, cut-and-paste the output from the console window (if any) and add it to this ticket. Odd. 1. From a terminal window, run $ gimp Does GIMP start normally? 2. In Nautilus, find a photo file and right click it. In the Open With menu, do you see an entry for GIMP?
