[Bug 894396] Re: man do-release-upgrade: Nothing about config file: /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

2014-10-29 Thread Frédéric Grosshans
As of Ubuntu 14.10, the bug is still present, and it took some time for
me to find the information (which is this bug report).

I would change add a sentence in the manpage description, changing it to
:

Upgrade the operating system to the latest release from the command-
line. The choice of the release (LTS or normal) is defined in the file
: /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades. This is the preferred command if
the machine has no graphic environment or if the machine is to be
upgraded over a remote connection.

[Bug 894396] Re: man do-release-upgrade: Nothing about config file: /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

2011-11-25 Thread Jason Kairl
Hello Aapo,

A man page for update manager was added some time ago see bug report
#107015.

You can do a distro update with apt-get dist-update. Have a look at the
man apt-get for more info.

Is this what you were after?

Regards Jason

2011-11-25 Thread Jason Kairl
Sorry, additional to the above the preferred method is with

sudo do-release-upgrade -d

To upgrade to a new release. I get a man page for this also, note I'm
running 11.10 though.

[Bug 894396] Re: man do-release-upgrade: Nothing about config file: /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

2011-11-25 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
I think your posts are not correct.
a) apt-get doesn't have 'dist-update'
It has 'dist-upgrade'
b) According to the 'man apt-get' dist-upgrade is not about distro update, but
also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages
(Or do you mean changing /etc/apt/sources.list by hands?)

c) do-release-upgrade -d
-d, --devel-release
Check if upgrading to the latest devel release is possible
Is not what I'm asked.

If I'm on Lucid (with Prompt=lts on /etc/update-manager/release-
upgrades) and run 'do-release-upgrade -d' it will upgrade to the next
LTS which is Precise. I asked upgrading from Lucid to the Maverick,
which only needs changing Prompt=normal.

--
I'm saying: It is simple task, but it is not covered on man-page, there are not
even hint about that file /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades affects for
'do-release-upgrade'.

[Bug 894396] Re: man do-release-upgrade: Nothing about config file: /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

2011-11-25 Thread Jason Kairl
Hello Aapo

Sorry I meant 'dist-upgrade'. I've been playing with debian a little bit
lately, apt-get can be used to upgrade in debian. However Ubuntu prefers
using 'do-release-upgrade -d'.

As for the original question which I didn't read closely enough you are
right there is no information in either man page about setting the
'Propmt' var to change the upgrade cycle from LTS to the next general
release. My apologies Aapo. I will mark the bug as confirmed as there is
no information in the man pages about this.

Regards Jason
