I just discovered this same bug on my desktop system using the final
9.04 alt install disc. The suggeted work around seems to be working, I'm
mid-install now. This is the first clean install I've done on this
machine since 6.06. Once this install is done, I'll attach more hardware
information to this bug...

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-24 Thread TiredOldMan
** Description changed:

Using the Jaunty alternate 1386 cd - partitioned using lvm/reiserfs
except for / which is primary ext4 - the install progresses part way
through installing the base system and then stops with a request to
insert the cd labeled jaunty _jackalope... At this point, the only
option is to reboot. I ran integrity test and md5sum on the cd and it
  passed.
+
+ I just downloaded the released version of Ubuntu 9.04 alternate install
+ CD. When I tried to install it I found the same problem still exists
+ there. Too bad!

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-19 Thread LuisMondesi
I got the same issue with alternate CD for RC1. I posted first here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1083783

My workaround was simple (and after rebooting I was able to install
ubuntu-desktop).

Going to tty2 (CTRL+Alt+F2) shows that /cdrom has the right stuff.
/target/cdrom points to media/cdrom which in turn points to cdrom0 (yes,
all relative to /target).

I set the /target/cdrom symlink to /target/media/cdrom0 like:
cd /target
rm cdrom
ln -s /target/media/cdrom0 cdrom

Then go back to tty1 (CTRL+Alt+F1) and click continue. I get an error
saying that the Install base system step failed and I go back to tty2
(CTRL+Alt+F2), put the symlink back for /target/cdrom:

cd /target
rm cdrom
ln -s media/cdrom cdrom

And after this the Install Base System worked and the processed
continued.

This is not good -- at least it worked.

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-17 Thread TiredOldMan
I just finished testing the Jaunty desktop alternate RC1 iso and found
that the same bug exists there. I would love to switch from Fedora to
Ubuntu, but I need to use the alternate install disk and so far, it is
useless to me. This is now the second release in a row where this
problem has existed. Do we have any ETA for a fix?

Is there anything else you want me to report or try, as this problem is
repeatable, and my system is currently available for testing - at least
until the final release of Jaunty !

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-09 Thread Andy Mallett
I am having similar difficulties with Jaunty 9.04 beta alternate i386 CD
install.

I can successfully go through all the following installation stages -
 Selected language
 Selected keyboard layout
 Detecting hardware
 Loaded additional components
 Configured network
 Partitioned disks

BUT during the phase -
 Installing the base system
it gets as far as -
76% Gathering information for installation report...

Then a window pops up showing the following -

---
   [!!] Install the base system

Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ -
Beta i386 (20090324)' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter.

Media change
Go Back Continue
---

At this point I can toggle between Go Back and Continue, but neither
option can be selected. In addition the eject button on the CD drive
has become disabled, so I was unable to eject and reinsert the disc
(to see if the installation would continue !).

I have repeated the above process several times, each time with more simple
configurations, but each time the same result occurs.

I have checked the MD5SUM of the .iso before burning the disk.

I ran the Check disc for defects from Installer boot menu and got -
The CD-ROM integrity test was successful. The CD-ROM is valid

I ran the Test memory and found no errors after 3 full passes.

My hardware is as follows -

Motherboard = Via EPIA 5000 C3 Samuel2 PLE133 533MHz, BIOS 2.07
Memory = 2 * 512MB PC133
HDD = WDC WD800BB 80GB PATA
CD drive = NEC DVD-RW ND-4551A

Before attempting a clean install of Ubuntu 9.04 Beta (Jaunty), this
hardware had been running fully updated Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) without
any problems. The CD drive is also known to work as it had been used in
the past few days to install previous versions of Ubuntu, including
alternate versions 7.04 and 8.04.

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-09 Thread Andy Mallett
After further investigation, and attempting to get my system working
again, I have discovered the following -

The bug I described above, occurs exactly the same in the final release
of Ubuntu alternate version 8.10 (Intrepid), just with the relevant
words for that version -

So during the phase -
 Installing the base system
it gets as far as -
78% Gathering information for installation report...

Then a window pops up showing the following -

---
   [!!] Install the base system

Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ -
Release i386 (20081028)' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter.

Media change
Go Back Continue
---

HOWEVER going back one more version to -
Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS alternate i386 CD install
I can install on to the same hardware without the above fault that occurs on
8.10 (Intrepid) and 9.04 beta (Jaunty).

[Bug 351053] Re: Alternate install hangs requesting jaunty CD

2009-04-09 Thread Andy Mallett
With the aim of getting my hardware running with Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty
Jackalope) beta, and having failed with the clean install from the i386
alternate CD, I followed the process below, which lead to an error
message which MIGHT be related to the Jaunty alternate CD install error
described above.

So here goes -

I first did a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS using the i386
alternate CD. - no problems.

Rebooted - no problems.

Immediately ran update-manager -d to force a distribution upgrade from
the internet.

Followed on screen prompts and upgraded to 8.10 - without any problems.

Rebooted - no problems.

Decided to insert the problematic Jaunty beta alternate CD (used above),
and see what happens.

Followed the prompts and started a distribution upgrade from CD and
selecting NOT to get updates from internet (to test what was supplied on
the problematic CD - as any internet updates may have otherwise masked
possible issues with the CD).

This seemed to go well for a long while, but eventually a window
appeared saying -

Could not install
'/media/cdrom0//pool/main/e/evolution/evolution-documentation-en_2.26.0-0ubuntu2_all.deb'

The upgrade will continue but the '/media/cdrom0//pool/main/e/evolution
/evolution-documentation-en_2.26.0-0ubuntu2_all.deb' package may be in a
not working state. Please consider submitting a bug report about it.

subprocess dpkg-split returned error exit status 2

Having closed this error message, the upgrade has continued for at least an
hour so far, without further problems (yet !).
Only another 1 hour and 27 minutes to go !!! - yes it takes a long time on a
533MHz CPU optimised for low power consumption !

I downloaded the cd a second time, checked the md5sum and disk
integrity, the problem is reproducible under VMWare-Fusion also!

I also tried, under vmware, a clean disk with default partitioning and
got the same error. The dialog says Please insert the disk labeled:
'Ubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ Beta I386 (20090324)'

When I burn the disk it getl labeled Ubuntu 9.04 I386
