[Bug 413166] Re: [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W
This is not an error. There is no browser without a tab in it at this point. That may be a feature in the future, but when you close the last tab, it's like closing the window. Also, as I said, this worked the same way in Firefox 3.0. Addons are free to modify functionality. My guess is that it just does a check every time you use CTRL + W to see if you only have one tab open. I confirmed with the Mozilla people that this is the expected behavior. You have the extension that changes it to your liking. That's what the extensions are for, to give people options for features that Mozilla can't make for everyone. [Bug 413166] Re: [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W
It seems a bit odd to change an established behaviour to the worse and then point to additional software to cure it. To close Firefox with only one tab open I now have the following options: CTRL-W CTRL-Shift-W CTRL-Q ALT-F4 ALT-F-Q ALT-F-C ALT-F-d use mouse to click on the window bar close button use mouse to click on the window bar Firefox icon and then choose close use mouse to click on the window bar Firefox icon and then enter C use mouse to click on File -> Quit use mouse to click on File -> Close Tab use mouse to click on File -> Close Window use mouse to click on File, then enter Q use mouse to click on File, then enter C use mouse to click on File, then enter d I may have missed some more, but these are 16 ways to achieve one outcome, yet there is not a single way - neither per keyboard nor per mouse - to close just the last tab, but leave the window open. Instead I must use a new piece of software, Tab mix plus, to restore old behaviour, whereby this add-on shows that it only takes a single check box to do the job. Sorry, but this reminds me of the joke about that "other" operating system, where errors are simply being redeclared as features. I am curious to hear straight from the firefox usability lab what great benefit made them change the old behaviour! -- [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 413166] Re: [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W
This is the correct behavior and I have confirmed with the Firefox people. I was told that Tab Mix Plus has options to override. [Bug 413166] Re: [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W
Hmmm, did you really use that feature before in ff? Because it had actually never been this way. The first time this comes up is in the 3.5 series. I tried those installations: WinXP with ff 3.0.13 intrepid with ff 3.0.11 ... canonical 1.0 intrepid with ff 3.0.13 ... canoncial 1.0 karmic-alpha4 with ff 3.5.2...canonical 1.0 (I don't know what the canonical variants do, but they are always given as 1.0) All versions have a CTRL-W to close the active tab, and all versions have CTRL-Shift-W to close the active ff window. The Ubuntu versions all also have CTRL-Q for Quit - Win does not have this - which, as far as I can see, does the very same thing as CTRL-Shift-W. All versions ff3.0 on win and ubuntu do NOT close the program on CTRL-W when only one tab is open, but ff3.5 does. You can see it in the attached screenshot-clips that ff3.5 has a different behaviour: With two tabs open the active one has that red square w. white cross, which you can click to close the tab. With only one tab open it does NOT have the red square, and the only way to close it is to close the program! This is counter intuitive. Imagine it were to happen on an editor when you were programming, which can have multiple files open, but forces you to shut down the program in order to clear all files of a project. Or imagine it WORD or EXCEL were behaving this way. In a browser I might want to close a tab so that a cookie is cleared (in banking application and other), but continue using the browser to do other work. When I have three commands available (CTRL-W, -Shift-W, -Q) why must all three do the same? As I mentioned, on a little and slow netbook closing a tab is reasonably fast, but having to restart the browser is quite annoying! This change has worsened the usability of ff. ** Attachment added: "ff3.5 with two tabs open" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/30333920/karmic-a4_ff3.5.2-canonical1.0.png -- [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 413166] Re: [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W
Thank you for reporting this to Ubuntu. This has been the standard behavior of Firefox since I can remember. If you close the last tab, there is nothing left for Firefox to keep open. Do you remember which build had it not working like that? ** Package changed: firefox (Ubuntu) => firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: firefox-3.5 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- [ubuntu karmic] firefox incorrectly closes on CTRL-W https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413166 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
