david, thanks again for your report, and thanks for your persistence in answering all those questions. It looks like the "apt-get update" has fixed this problem for you. However, it's probably also prevented us from seeing what was causing the problem in the first place. I have a similar problem with Ubuntu Software Centre . When I try to install anything or even add repository to ubuntu software sources it starts the installation but the progress bar hangs at " Applying Changes". I don't see anything wrong with your "software channels". Do you still have the problem with Ubuntu Software Center? Have you tried to install something else apart from Chromium? So it seems you can install software without a problem.
