[Bug 9379] Re: Xnest default size messed up with Xinerama

2009-02-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Rolf, Xinerama is long gone, so I suspect whatever issue you're having
(hard to say without seeing your logs or something) is something
different. Please file a new bug from the affected machine via `ubuntu-
bug xorg-server`.

[Bug 9379] Re: Xnest default size messed up with Xinerama

2009-02-05 Thread Mikko Rauhala
Xinerama as in the exact implementation of multi-screen X displays may
be long-gone.

Xinerama the X protocol extension and method for applications to query
the actual displays' geometry is AFAIK alive, and used by many non-
Xinerama multi display desktop implementations.

Now, I'm not certain if xrandr 1.2 is meant to replace this
functionality of the Xinerama extension and client libraries also
(partially seeing as I don't know if the Xinerama extension can cope
with the dynamic nature of xrandr configuration). But I know that this
bug persists in 8.10. I just tried gdmflexiserver --xnest and while
Metacity restricted the Xnest window size to the width of a single
screen, that window did not show the whole Xnest desktop; indeed, the
Xnest window had to be dragged significantly wider (than one monitor)
for the whole Xnest area to show.

So at least as of 8.10, this is still very much an issue for anyone
utilizing gdmflexiserver in xnest mode (and xnest users in general,
though it's easier to explicitly set the desktop size using it
directly).

What I don't know is if it's fixed in later releases or whether the
Xinerama client libraries are the correct way to go about it anymore.
Anyway, it's an upstream thing, certainly...

'course, the case could be made to abandon Xnest for Xephyr , which
apparently starts up in a modest 640x480 per default but can be
reasonably grown through the usual Xrandr.

That would be a gdmflexiserver issue, of course.

Aand of course, as bug 173837 tells us, gdmflexiserver _does_ actually
use Xephyr over Xnest if installed. Yeah well.

[Bug 9379] Re: Xnest default size messed up with Xinerama

2008-02-01 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I don't think it is.

I have an internal display with 1024x768 and an external on with
1680x1050. The login is screen is higher than 1050 pixels. I see no
option to set the screen size anywhere. Just lots of questions I found
with google, but no answers.
