Re: [Bug 424132] Re: [kubuntu] OOo KDE file dialog is utterly broken.

2009-10-25 Thread Jakob Lund
This comment is only about the file dialogs.

I got the 1:3.1.1-5ubuntu1 package last night, and installed the kde
integration again.

The "save", "save as" and "export" dialogs have improved. The various check
boxes now have labels, and the "filter" dropdown is populated with text.
Most importantly, it is now possible to actually save the document and get
on with what you were doing...

Remaining brokenness / usability flaws:

* There is a "Automatic file name extension" AS WELL as a "Automatically
select filename extension (.html)". Only one should be needed!
* Only in "Export" and with the "XHTML" filter: The file you export may get
as many as three extensions if the file name displayed in the "Name" field
has an extension and both the "automatic" boxes are checked. Extensions get
appended one efter the other, for example "test.html.html .xhtml" (yes there
is a space before `.xhtml'). (The pdf filter doesn't do this.)
* When you "Save as" or "Export" files, how are you supposed to know that
you have to select the type of file you want to save in the "Filter" select
box? This is (always was) a little unintuitive to say the least. Perhaps
change the label to "File format" or something else.

Thanks to everyone working on this.
Jakob.

Re: [Bug 424132] Re: [kubuntu] OOo KDE file dialog is utterly broken.

2009-10-21 Thread seasoned_geek
It got too big for many reasons.

1) OO was no where near ready for Alpha, let alone beta when it went out
2) Nobody edited the bug description when it was first file to restrict it to
something they thought would be manageable.
3) Roughly 80% of the problems could realistically point back to the file
dialog in an end user's eyes.
4) The bug reporting system is poorly designed. It encourages users to file
their bugs under a heading which closely matches their problem. Let one
heading appear with the text "utterly broken" and that is going to match 90%
of the bug reports in a user's eyes.

2009-10-15 Thread Bruce Miller
The short-term workaround to this problem is to delete temporarily the
package openoffice.org-kde.

You can check version numbers in the repository (at the command line:
apt-cache policy ; I am sure that the various GUIs can
provide the same information) to see if the fixed version has reached
your repository.

2009-10-15 Thread seasoned_geek
Someone should have changed the description on this one early on if they
didn't want thousands of related problems filed under this same heading. It is
quite difficult for an "end user" to determine if OO saving document in wrong
format is a problem related to this or from a different part of the system. It
certainly "could" be related to this, especially with all of those unlabeled
checkboxes.

In a couple of days I will pull down the fixes. My mirror always seems to take
a couple of days to get a new push. In its current state OO is unusable on
KUbuntu.

I've observed the same problem in the writer part. It saves in an old MS

of e.g. German umlauts or the €-symbol (probably any non ASCII

I have a working solution after doing `apt-get purge openoffice.org-common`
and after that `apt-get install openoffice.org openoffice.org-style-oxygen`
-- now I can get export to xhtml to work, which is what I've been trying for
a while (since I installed ooo 3.0 in hardy from some ppa I don't
