[Bug 152131] initial ubuntu image is moved to the right

2007-10-12 Thread hugolp
Public bug reported:

When I start the computer and Ubuntu starts, in the initial screen, the
Ubuntu name is not centered. It is two o three fingers to the right. Its
curious, because it only happens once Ubuntu is on the hard driver. It
didnt happen when booting from the cd.

[Bug 97591] Re: [gutsy] MSN waiting for network connection... but does not connect

2007-10-12 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
I made it! here's the patch to force the disconnection after network manager
looses a connection.
it was really simple, you can look it yourself.
now when a cable is unplugged/a wireless signal is lost/a connection goes down,
pidgin forces the disconnection of all accounts, and when network-manager
regains a new connection, then pidgin automatically reconnects.

[Bug 150777] Re: in gutsy, screen locks on lid close even when gconf option is turned off

2007-10-12 Thread unggnu
I can confirm this. I think the greatest option for this is
/apps/gnome-power-manager/lock/use_screensaver_settings . If people want
locking they enable screensaver locking which results in locking for suspend,
hibernate and so on but people who don't want enter their password every time
disable locking and everything is fine.
It makes no sense for me to open gconf-editor to disable locking per hand if
there is such an option.
I have made a debdiff for it.

[Bug 146287] Re: kernel 2.6.22 fails to mount hard drives, drops to busybox

this appears to actually be several different bugs depending on your
hardware... so on my hardware all_generic_ide works others have reported
to use the modprobe piix or irqpoll parameter... the main problem
appears to be that there are so many different hardware configurations
that the developers can't test them all.

This message is automatically generated by the autopkgtest package

The top and tail of the test log, which is intended to be sufficient
to diagnose most failures, can be found below. However, in case this
is not sufficient, a complete log can be found along with output
files, saved temporary files, and so on, at:

The test environment is an amd64 Xen guest with limited amounts of

very few other packages. Most autopkgtest reports are FTBFS problems.

Please forgive this bug report if the problem is due to archive skew;

[Bug 123696] Re: dependency problem on Kubuntu

2007-10-12 Thread nem75
Possible workaround:

1) install network-manager-gnome (if you haven't already)
2) run nm-applet
3) use the Gnome network manager applet to configure your pptp VPN connection
4) close nm-applet and restart knetworkmanager

If you don't have the VPN connection showing up in knetworkmanager by
then, go ahead and try a reboot. I'm not exactly sure when the
connection showed up, but eventually it did and worked flawlessly so
far.

[Bug 52302] Re: Intel Pro Wireless 3945 is not detected with latest kernel update

2007-10-12 Thread xyzt1234
Although I'm a bit knowledgeable about computers, I'm an almost newbie
in Linux. After a fresh install over XP SP2, I obviously tried to get
the internal wireless device to work, as it's how I connect at home
(GPRS when out of it, but that might be another chapter). It didn't
work.

It is recognized as eth1 in Network Definitions (sorry, it's not in
English) and as active; but console commands such as sudo lshw, sudo
pccardctl ident and lspci -v do not list it. entering the appropriate
IP values for the router doesn't produce a connection either.

A kernel update to image 2.6.15.26 is suggested by the command
sudo apt-get install linux-686
above but obviously no net connection exists.

Ubuntu 6.10 is not listed as a download at
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

[Bug 152136] Ati driver does not work/Ati card not recognized

2007-10-12 Thread mikel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

When running the live CD of Ubuntu 7.10 Release Candidate I get in the
restricted drivers screen the option of installing the Ati proprietary drivers
for my ATI Radeon X1600. While running the live CD everything goes ok, I can
modify the screen resolution and it all looks well.
But when I install the distro to the hard disk and then reboot, I can't get the
X working properly. I try to modify the xorg.cong manually by the vim way, but
I get then a message telling that my graphics card model cannot be detected.
And if I try to select my graphics card model in the list, the X breaks.
I managed to run Ubuntu in a low graphics mode, and I have installed the
proprietary driver again, then I'm told to reboot the computer, and when Ubuntu
starts again I get the same problem: it seems that my graphics card isn't
detected once again and I have to run it in the low graphics mode.

Hi! Thanks for getting these prepared. It seems that this package uses
dpatch for patches. Your feisty diff includes both in and out of dpatch
patches, and dapper and edgy lack dpatch at all. (Also, the
gutsy/feisty fixes for wzd_protocol.c, are these accidentally missing in
edgy/dapper?)

[Bug 152138] Bad resolution

2007-10-12 Thread Martin Picek
Public bug reported:

I had a new installation of Ubuntu 7.10 RC and I'd some problems with
the resolution.

Firstly, the installation finished without problems and everething run
OK. But: I opened the tool that can configure the X.org and my desktop
got resolution 1600x1200 (the tool still said that I've 1280x1024). So I
had edited the resolution throw the old dialog for changing of
resolution and my desktop got the right parametres.

The problem is: the login screen still has the resolution 1600x1200 and
I can't edit it by a graphical tool.

I've Eizo L568 (it was detected right).

Summary: 1/ by running the tool for configuration of the X started the
problems (most probably); 2/ resolution of the desktop is possible to
set throw the dialog Resolution (or something like it); 3/ resolution of
the login screen isn't possible to set.

[Bug 152139] System hangs with black screen on restart with Gutsy Beta

2007-10-12 Thread Jonathon James
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded to Gutsy Beta from Feisty. The only problem I have
is that my system now hangs sometimes when I try to restart it. I
haven't noticed this behaviour so far with shutdowns, only restarts.
Once I press restart, the screen simply goes to black, without any
indication of the splash screen or other activity, and stays there until
I hold the power button to shut off the computer manually.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 700m with the following specs:
Intel Pentium M Processor 1.70GHz
1GB memory
Intel 85x graphics card

The sad thing was that adept upgrade halted soon after this error. And i
had to kill upgrade process manually and run "dpkg --configure -a" from

[Bug 152133] Upgrade to Gutsy fails with configuring debconf

2007-10-12 Thread Luke Plant
Public bug reported:

Using Kubuntu feisty, I tried to upgrade to Gutsy following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades#head-
03dfe71741407e245a9fcd75bded428572061f53

After everything downloaded, I received a number of popups - contents
equivalents the following messages from main.log:

2007-10-12 19:22:02,498 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'debconf':
'subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation
fault), core dumped

2007-10-12 22:22:39,893 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg:
'/var/cache/apt/archives/x11-common_1%3a7.2-5ubuntu13_i386.deb':
'subprocess pre-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation
fault), core dumped

2007-10-12 22:24:04,503 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg:
'x11-common': 'dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

Then, while displaying the message 'Preparing to configure libidl0', it
just hung -- stopped forever with no CPU or disk activity. So I
abandoned. Tried the process again (which unfortunately means I don't
have a proper apt.log, though I have salvaged the others). The upgrader
didn't work -- I had to 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to get things in a
working state. After this used "aptitude dist-upgrade" to continue
upgrade, which appears to be working, with some problems (due to failed
downloads, perhaps?) which may be fixed by trying again.

[Bug 144796] Re: "Glossary of Windows terms" link doesn't work

Daniel - I've tried this myself and get totally different results. I've
taken 7.10.3 from the archive, and 7.10.4 as a svn export. The debdiffs
look fine. I'll attach both the one on the source package (on the .dsc
files) and the one on the binaries (on the .deb files). My builds were
done on gutsy, up to date as of yesterday.

I think this is something to do with how to symlink script is working,

[Bug 152148] Trouble configuring compiz using ccsm

2007-10-12 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

When I run ccsm to configure Compiz on Gutsy, it runs fine and displays
the configuration options correctly. However, certain actions do not
work at all or do not work as expected.

Firstly, setting values using the keyboard does not register them with
the configuration tool. For example, if an opacity value is set to 20
and I delete the 20 and key in a 40, the new setting never takes effect
and the configuration tool reflects a value of 20 when restarted.

Second, setting new shortcut keys for compiz actions seems to be broken.
I can set key combonations such as ctrl+alt+super+x, for example, but I
can't use alt+tab, shift+tab, or any such combinations. These
combinations are already used by certain compiz programs, so I see the
fact that they cannot be set customized using the configuration tool as
a bug.

Third, the compiz userspace filesystem plugin will not initialize. There
is no error message; the configuration tool just refuses to enable it.

If these are all separate bugs, I can file them independently and mark
this one a duplicate of them. I'm definitely willing to submit
configuration files and such if somebody tells me where to find them.
Thanks for your hard work, Compiz guys... I can't wait to see this
system really get polished and usable.

[Bug 81057] Re: DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-10-12 Thread Mac
OK so here's my theory and how i fixed it (on 100+ Ubintu machines).

There is some low level incompatibility between the Ubuntu dns requests
and specific models of router. (I've heard this happens on a few other
distros as well, so it's not Ubuntu specific)

Some models of router are absolutely fine, and some models resolve to
1.0.0.0 just about all the time.

Some success can be had by disabling ipv6 on some routers, but on most
of my DSL connections with these faulty DSL routers, this had no effect.

The only fix guaranteed fix I have found is to avoid asking these
routers for DNS information, because they LIE!

To do this I install a small package called "dnsmasq", this is a caching
DNS proxy service that sits on your local machine and passes requests
upstream to real DNS servers, and also caches the results.

(apt-get install dnsmasq)
(man dnsmasq)

I then set the .conf file of dnsmasq to pass DNS requests directly to
opendns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS). You could also use the
DNS IP of your ISP's dns servers.

Your local machine is then set to use 127.0.0.1 (localhost) for DNS
queries where dnsmasq will answer them from cache if it can (very fast)
or go out to the DNS server you set in the .conf file.

This approach totally avoids the need to ask these buggy DSL routers DNS
queries.

As I mentioned earlier I've got this running on 100+ ubuntu machines,
and 60+ DSL routers, and it has not missed a beat.

Mac
New Zealand

[Bug 152091] Re: Workspace Switcher only sees primary screen on dualHead setup

2007-10-12 Thread Sami Nybacka
Another, most probably related, dual screen weirdness: sometimes gnome-
terminal (started from gnome-panel menu or launcher) has DISPLAY set to
wrong screen number.

I.e. terminal started on screen0 normally has DISPLAY ":0.0", but very
often it gets ":0.1". And vice versa. When this happens first time, then
usually all following terminals have DISPLAY wrong.

Haven't yet found out the logic/circumstances when this happens. Usually
the first terminal on particular screen has its DISPLAY right, but
second & all the following terminals have it wrong.

[Bug 81057] Re: DNS Resolves everything to 1.0.0.0 intermittently on some ADSL Routers

2007-10-12 Thread Mac
The other option I should have mentioned is that manually putting the IP
addresses of good DNS servers directly into your router often fixes the
problem (usually by unticking / unticking a box like "use ISP's DNS
Servers / use Manual DNS servers".

The reason I did not use this approach for my machines is that I usually
have no access to log into my clients DSL router, so I needed a solution
that would work on the client PC.

[Bug 151996] Re: Gutsy RC1: Install fails

2007-10-12 Thread bert07
I can confirm this. I tried to install the ubuntu gutsy live dvd i386 three
times (burned it three times a new) and every time the installation failed at
44 % with I/O error.
An hour ago I tried the Xubuntu Gutsy. Ended just the same, at 44 % of the
installation.
So I do assume that this cannot have anything to do with the burning of the
images (Ubuntu DVD, Xubuntu CD)

Because I was thinking this might have something to do with my hard
drive, I newly formatted and partitioned it several times, because the
drive as well began spitting out I/O errors.

I know am installing Xubuntu 7.04 at that very same partition, without having
it formatted or repartitioned it.
Guess what? It installed WITHOUT ANY error!

I guess this is back to the black board for you dev's.

[Bug 152149] Compiz conflict: Expo and Sticky Windows

2007-10-12 Thread Ryan Prior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When sticky windows and Expo are both enabled, stick windows will not
let you move windows in Expo mode. The window and cursor will jiggle
violently while you're trying to drag a window. Disabling the sticky
windows plugin is a workaround, but it would be nice if the sticky
behaviour could be temporarily disabled while expo is trying to move
windows and re-enabled when the user zooms back in. Both Expo and sticky

Login Window > Remote with Style same as Login
+ 2. Reboot PC1 to complete enabling the Remote Login.
+ 3. From another PC (PC2) running Ubuntu Gusty/7.10, use Options > Remote
Login via XDMCP from the Login Screen
+ 4. PC1 appears on the list, connect to it
+
+ Result:
+ I see a "dead" X screen (with the X cursor in the middle) for a split second,
then I'm returned to my local login screen.
