[Bug 1717659] Re: grub

2017-10-02 Thread Phillip Susi
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this
could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

Can you please provide us with the file /tmp/deja-dup.gsettings after running

[Bug 1640978] Re: [SRU] Backport letsencrypt 0.14.2

2017-10-02 Thread Brad Warren
While I didn't look any more into the build failure for the letsencrypt
package (let me know if you'd like me to), I added a check to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates/Certbot/TestScript testing
that a symlink is properly created in the user's PATH. The test passes
on the letsencrypt package in xenial-proposed.

Also after talking to racb in IRC last week, I think we should include a
python-letsencrypt package in Xenial similar to the one we have at
https://pypi.python.org/pypi/letsencrypt. This allows other Python code
to continue to import Certbot through the name letsencrypt.

While the majority of letsencrypt/certbot's internals do not have stable
interfaces for other packages to use, there is a plugin interface, base
classes, and utilities that are used by Certbot's third party plugins
listed at https://certbot.eff.org/docs/using.html#third-party-plugins.

Doing this for python-letsencrypt-apache might also be a good idea so
users can continue to install Certbot and our Apache plugin through this
package name. This could also allow Python code to import the plugin
through the name "letsencrypt_apache", however, the plugin is not
expected to be used this way by third parties.

If we do this for the Apache plugin as well, our Python wrapper is
available at https://pypi.python.org/pypi/letsencrypt-apache.

[Bug 1716265] Re: Disabling screenlock has no effect

2017-10-02 Thread Doug McMahon
I believe *maybe* this isn't an issue any more,
Fresh install, disabled auto lockscreen
Let screen blank, woke up
While it didn't go directly to Desktop it didn't go to a security lockscreen.
Went to that lockscreen image?, then pulling up showed the desktop.

As far as suspend, it always goes to the security lockscreen but maybe
that's intended behavior.?

[Bug 1720187] Re: 17.10 upgrade should mark ubuntu-gnome-desktop for removal

2017-10-02 Thread Brian Murray
The second part of this bug is actually about a string from update-

guesses it by looking for a package which ends with '-desktop'. There
is a lookup in the get_ubuntu_flavor_name function you could add an
override for ubuntu-gnome-deskotp and SRU to 17.04.

[Bug 1019621] Re: Abiword flickers hard when scrolling (regression)

2017-10-02 Thread Traumschule Riebau
We installed lubuntu xenial (LTS up to 2021) on our public computers,
which works well with old laptpos.

Abiword flickers hard on an IBM T43 with at least one letter inserted to
a page. New documents, do not flicker (page content is updated dozens of
times during a second). It is however not related to scrolling.

The same is for the artful version (3.0.2-4).

$ lspci -k|grep VGA -A3
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
RV370/M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]
Subsystem: IBM RV370/M22 [Mobility Radeon X300]
Kernel driver in use: radeon
Kernel modules: radeonfb, radeon

Is this related or should this go to a new report?

[Bug 1623666] Re: iOS device contents not displayed in Ubuntu

2017-10-02 Thread William F Hammond
I've had success with newly installed 16.04.3 LTS following steps 8 - 11
given in #44 after installing the October 2016 ppa for 16.04 from Martin
Salbaba. That is, my first 3 steps were:

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:martin-salbaba/ppa+libimobiledevice
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After retrieving my photos and before disconnecting the iPhone, I
suggest

  idevicepair unpair
fusermount -u x (where x is the "mount point").

One more note: I was running the Mate Desktop. When I connected the
(unlocked) iPhone, the program "Shotwell" appeared. I did not want to
use it. The alternate selection was Caja (Mate's file manager similar to
Nautilus), but Caja was not seeing the phone. (The command lsusb was
seeing the phone.) I selected "unmount" in the requester offering
"Shotwell" just in case Shotwell did have access before I proceeded to
use idevicepair.

I seem to have a solution that is satisfactory for me -- especially
because I want to have command-line access to the photos, and using
idevicepair and ifuse makes the mounted location of the photos quite
explicit to me since I specify the mount point.

I do think, however, that many LTS desktop users will want something
such as what Mate purports to offer.

I also completely fail to understand why Apple thinks that lightening
port access to the small user portion of the iPhone filesystem requires
either SSL or TLS. (Might this be explained by an alternate route
"through the air"?)

[Bug 1118447] Re: Race condition with network and NFS mounts causes boottime hang

2017-10-02 Thread Christian González
Maybe it doesn't help much here. It just *could* be that it doesn't have to do
anything with the network being up, but with DNS resolution?
I have had the problem on one computer (don't know why), and spotted the
following line in /var/log/syslog:

mount[859]: mount.nfs: Failed to resolve server kerberos: Temporary
failure in name resolution

So I tested a bit, and found that if I put "kerberos" with the right IP
into /etc/hosts, it works perfectly.

So maybe it is the problem that the name resolution at the boot time
when NFS shares should be mounted, does still not work.

[Bug 1707185] Re: I wish “Firmware Package” had the RTL8821AE wireless network adaptor driver.

2017-10-02 Thread James Cameron
Dave, Lwfinger is Larry Finger, the maintainer of the rtl8821ae driver
already in Ubuntu 16.04. When you used his GitHub driver, you had
undone a change by Realtek, and that's why it worked. The Realtek
change was 40b368af4b75 ("rtlwifi: Fix alignment issues") and caused the
connection loss.

Larry Finger and I have worked on the connection loss in the past few
weeks. Linux kernel v4.14 when it is released should contain a fix
b8b8b16352cd ("rtlwifi: rtl8821ae: Fix connection lost problem"). But
there's nothing wrong with continuing with the GitHub driver if it is
working fine for you.

Martin, package linux-firmware-1.168 and earlier versions have the
rtl8821ae firmware for the wireless network adapter. So I don't think
this bug should "affects" linux-firmware or linux-firmware-nonfree.

[Bug 1653012] Re: 10ec:8821 [Asus X555L] RTL8821AE doesn't work after some minutes.

2017-10-02 Thread James Cameron
This bug should close because the configuration has been disassembled,
we can hardly expect hotellina to change the wireless card back to what
it was just so that the bug can be solved. ;-)

However, several of the problems in this bug were fixed by upstream
patches, in particular b8b8b16352cd ("rtlwifi: rtl8821ae: Fix connection
lost problem") merged for 4.14-rc4.

I now have rtl8821ae working well. It was terrible for a while. What I
did was

(a) test several ubuntu kernels to find which ones were affected,

(b) using git bisect, tested several custom kernels, and proved my
problem began with a single commit 40b368af4b75 ("rtlwifi: Fix alignment
issues"),

(c) worked with upstream to determine a likely cause; the commit wasn't
widely tested,

(d) proved through testing that the BIOS can have an effect; because the
rtl8821ae driver does not reset the card, but inherits the card in
whatever state the BIOS left it. This can randomise problem reports.

(e) proved that a power down and reboot can have a different effect to a
warm reboot; some of the wireless card device registers are unchanged on
warm reboot. This can randomise problem reports.

Hope that helps.

[Bug 1515513] Re: /boot/initrd.img-*.old-dkms files left behind

2017-10-02 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ If a dkms package is installed which has REMAKE_INITRD or the same setting
has be manually configured by a user then when a kernel is removed its possible
for an ".old-dkms" file to be left in /boot with no associated kernel.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ On a system with two old kernels and one new kernel available in -updates:
+ 1) install r8168-dkms
+ 2) install the dkms module for the old kernel e.g. 'sudo dkms install -m
r8168 -v 8.041.00 -k 4.4.0-31-generic'
+ 3) upgrade your kernel e.g. "sudo apt install linux-image-generic'
+ 4) sudo apt autoremove
+ 5) observe something like "initrd.img-4.4.0-31-generic.old-dkms" in /boot
without a corresponding "initrd.img-4.4.0-31-generic"
+
+ With the version of dkms in -proposed, the .old-dkms file will be
+ removed when the kernel is auto removed.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Somebody out there might expect the .old-dkms file to be kept, but that seems
like an odd expectation.
+
One notices *.old-dkms files being left behind still sitting on the disk
after purging the related kernel. This can cause /boot to become full,
and when it gets really bad, even sudo apt-get autoremove won't fix the
problem - only deleting the old-dkms files manually solves the problem.

Note: Filling up the /boot partition causes updates to fail.

[Bug 1622293] Re: rtl8821ae WiFI does not work

2017-10-02 Thread James Cameron
Summary; my own rtl8821ae frequent connection lost problem was fixed by
upstream patch b8b8b16352cd ("rtlwifi: rtl8821ae: Fix connection lost
problem") merged for 4.14-rc4.

I've recently fixed a problem very much like the problems reported in
this bug. In particular the loss of WiFi scan results, and the
connection loss on a burst of download data. Workaround was to turn
wireless off then on again (using rfkill), or reboot. What I did was

I've recently fixed a problem very much like the problems reported in
this bug; and during my tests I saw the cycling ping times, the delay
unloading the module, and the no buffer space, all of which suggested a
firmware hang in the wireless device.

My main problem was that connection was lost shortly after it was made,
and especially if there was a burst of download data. Workaround was to
turn wireless off then on again, or reboot.

What I did was

(a) test several ubuntu kernels to find which ones were affected,

[Bug 1720890] [NEW] vulkan-smoketest segfaults steam vulkan games segfault

2017-10-02 Thread Lawrence A Fossi
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu Artful Aardvark (development branch)
Release:17.10

$ apt-cache policy mesa-vulkan-drivers
mesa-vulkan-drivers:
  Installed: 17.2.1-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 17.2.1-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 17.2.1-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu artful/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Easily reproducible : apt-get install mesa-vulkan-drivers apt-get install
vulkan-utils

Open a terminal type vulkan-smoketest instead of a glxgears type window it will
segfault.
message from kernel.log:
Sep 29 16:23:53 Tardis-1 kernel: [17709.532915] vulkan-smoketes[11798]:
segfault at 0 ip 7fed61a17914 sp 7ffedcb8f850 error 6 in

syslog:

libvulkan_radeon.so[7f627053b000+18b000]

What should happen is a glxgears like window will open and render properly
instead of segfaulting.
It appears that the culprit is an old or broken libvulkan_radeon.so provided by
mesa-vulkan-drivers.

As a test I renamed the old lib and dropped in a newer version from
oibaf's ppa. smoketest now passes steam's The Talos Princible and Mad
Max now work properly in Vulkan mode as well instead of segfaulting.

This issue is also present on Zesty and fixed in both Oibaf's and
Padoka's ppa's since April back when they were rolling 17.2 mesa.

I have no idea if libvulkan_intel.so also needs updating no hardware to
check.

Since you mention that the issue is fixed in Artful, but still present
in 17.04, you may want to look into the SRU Procedure [1].

place. This can be quite confusing for the users.

[Bug 1719462] Re: [Translation] "Left" and "Right" must be translated differently in different contexts

2017-10-02 Thread Doctor Rover
Jeremy Bicha, thank you for giving attention to this bug report.

The situation is as follows. In the GNOME Control Center (Settings
application), there are two panels involving "Left" and "Right": 1) Mouse &
Touchpad; 2) Dock.
In Mouse & Touchpad panel, "Left" and "Right" correspond to Primary Button
setting (settings_mouse_touchpad.png). In Dock panel, "Left" and "Right" are
for Position on Screen (settings_dock.png).

In Rosetta there is only one item to translate for "Left" in these both
contexts and only one item for "Right" (translations-launchpad-
net_gnome-control-center.png). But in Russian, "Left" and "Right" in
these two contexts (Mouse and Dock) must be translated differently.

So we need two different "Left"s to translate in two different contexts
and two different "Right"s.

> Do you have a suggestion for the context string we could add?
How about these strings for the two contexts?
1) Option for the mouse primary button
2) Option for the Ubuntu Dock position on screen

[Bug 1720901] [NEW] VLC under Wayland causes system freezes in fullscreen mode

2017-10-02 Thread Simon P.
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu version: 17.10 (most recent updates as of October 3rd)
vlc version: 2.2.6-6

Whan I expect to happen: When playing a video in vlc and switching to
fullscreen mode everything should work fine. Also when changing to a
different position of a movie in fullscreen I expect the player to just
switch to that position.

What actually happens: It seems to depend a little on the file type of
the video, mostly I get problems when going to fullscreen mode and then
switching to a different position with the playback position bar. With
some videos it was even enough to just open the fullscreen mode. The
video freezes just displaying a frame while the audio keeps playing. The
computer does not react any more to mouse or keyboard input, I have to
perform a hard reboot.

This problem only appears under the Wayland session, in the Xorg session
everything works fine as expected.

[Bug 1720736] Re: Consider changing "Activities" text to Ubuntu icon image by default for brand recognition

2017-10-02 Thread Jesse
** Description changed:

On June 6th I ran a poll on Ubuntu's Google+ community asking if users
thought the "Activities" text looked better in the top-left of the
screen for the Activities button, or the Ubuntu logo (traditional or
modified to fit the top panel style).

  Here are the results:
  https://plus.google.com/+JesseDuBordFilms/posts/LEjy6zxmNw3.

Out of 169 participants, 87% thought the icon would look better.

- Wanted to officially bring it to the table for consideation.
+ Wanted to officially bring it to the table for considertion.

  Benefits being:

  - Less ambiguous (the word "Activities" doesn't immediately depict the
button's purpose or function to the user, in my opinion).
  - Greater recognition for the Ubuntu brand. Nowhere on the default desktop
does it show the Ubuntu logo, I think this is a greatly missed opportunity.
Even Unity had the Ubuntu logo prominently on the top button of the dash.

I feel like this warrants some consideration on the marketing and design
  team's end.

sudo apt install mount --reinstall

Look at what I had tried before as noted in initial bug report. Did not
try this.

mount was successfully reinstalled followed by me updating the 215

[Bug 1720217] Re: Allow building images with kernels without initrd

2017-10-02 Thread Steve Langasek
** Description changed:

  [SRU Justification]
initramfsless boot is an important enhancement to decrease boot times and
increase density for cloud images. Unfortunately, live-build assumes that an
initramfs is used, and image builds fail if it is not present. Fix this so
that these improvements can be applied to the LTS, which represents the vast
majority of cloud instances.

  [Test case]
  1. Build livecd-rootfs from
lp:~rbalint/livecd-rootfs/minimize-unminimize-xenial
  2. Install this version of livecd-rootfs with the xenial-updates live-build.
  3. Create a build directory with 'mkdir build-dir; cd build-dir'
  4. Attempt an image build with the command (as root): 'cp -a
/usr/share/livecd-rootfs/live-build/{auto,ubuntu-cpc}/ .; env
PROJECT=ubuntu-cpc SUBPROJECT=minimize ARCH=amd64 SUITE=xenial lb config && env
PROJECT=ubuntu-cpc SUBPROJECT=minimize ARCH=amd64 lb build'
  4. Confirm that this fails to produce output, with the error 'cp: cannot stat
'chroot/boot/initrd.img-*': No such file or directory'
  5. Clean up the build tree with 'rm -r --one-file-system .build/ *'
  6. Install live-build from xenial-proposed.
  7. Attempt a second image build with the same command from step 4.
  8. Confirm that this produces output files in the current directory.

+ [Regression potential]
+ If another bug is introduced elsewhere that causes an initramfs to fail to be
generated in the expected location as part of an image that does require one,
the resulting image build will fail or will fail to boot due to the ignored
error.

  [Original description]
Lb may fail when creating an image with a kernel not requiring, hence
initramfs-tools not building initrd.

[Bug 1720892] Re: 17.10Beta2. networking.service not available

2017-10-02 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
ifupdown which provides netowrking.service is no longer installed by
default or used.

desktop systems default to networkmanager for network management, as
they have done since forever.

server and cloud systems in artful default to using src:nplan package,
netplan command line by default. Which generates and uses systemd-
networkd by default.

If you do not wish to use Networkmanager, please write a netplan yaml
config in /etc/netplan and reboot.

netplan command has a helpful `ifupdown-migrate` subcommand, which may
be convenient for you to convert ifupdown e-n-i files into netplan yaml.
A simple example is:

$ cat /etc/netplan/10-netplan.yaml
network:
  version: 2
  ethernets:
eth0:
  match:
name: eth0
  dhcp4: true

Please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Netplan for more information.

On the contrary, the package has been promoted to main in zesty and
artful.

No, it does not; it is a dependency of ppc64-diag, the installer itself does
not use it.

The kernel with the reverted changes is already in the pipeline to be
published to the archive. So we can test this fix at a normal pace.

[Bug 1719045] Re: [Hyper-V] Docker failures with linux-azure 4.11.0-1011

2017-10-02 Thread Marcelo Cerri
Thanks, Dexuan.

Reading the specification I believe I found the problem. The original
implementation is assuming the entire hv_vp_set structure is variable
and it's passing `nr_bank + 2` as variable header size for
hv_do_rep_hypercall().

However the specification states:

"Since the fixed header size is implicit, instead of supplying the total
header size, only the variable portion is supplied in the input
controls."

Based on that, the first two fields in hv_vp_set should not be
considered for the variable header size and `nr_bank` should be used
instead of `nr_bank + 2`.

I'm attaching the backport for the 3 upstream commits plus a forth patch
with that fix. I also built a kernel with those patches for testing
purposes and it can be downloaded from:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~mhcerri/azure/lp1719045-fix/

I was able to restart dockerd with this kernel hundred of times without
any problem.

Let me know if the solution seems reasonable for you. Once that is
tested I will submit the fix upstream.

[Bug 1575078] Re: [XPS 15 9550, Realtek ALC3266] Headphone jack stops working after a while

2017-10-02 Thread David H. Wilkins
Solved?

Thanks for this forum Ubuntu. I'm a Fedora user, but I frequently find
solutions here

I have an XPS 9550 along with the issue of the headphone microphone not
working. I changed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf from:

options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 probe_mask=1 model=dell-headset-multi

to:

options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 probe_mask=1 model=headset-mic

And now my headphone microphone works. There is no annoying popup when
you plug in the headphones either. Hopefully this helps someone.

[Bug 1720930] [NEW] wlp3s0: failed to remove key (1, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) from hardware (-22)

2017-10-02 Thread Dylan Borg
Public bug reported:

When running artful on a new Zenbook Pro (uses Intel Wireless 8265), I
get a hung shutdown with the message "wlp3s0: failed to remove key (1,
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) from hardware (-22)". The kernel is also trying to
load firmware versions that do not exist on the system i.e. versions 33
then 32 of the firmware. It then seems to load version 31 of the
firmware. Wireless features seem to work normally. The issues are just
at shutdown time.

[Bug 1720219] Re: Repeated keys stop after a few characters (^@ character spam every second)

2017-10-02 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
I think that's an AppArmor regression. Use "apparmor=0" kernel parameter
should temporarily workaround the issue.

[Bug 1676169] Re: rustc (1.16.0+dfsg1-1~exp1ubuntu1) gives an error when compiling with std

2017-10-02 Thread ais523
This bug appears to have been fixed in Ubuntu Zesty by a recent update:

Confirmed still buggy in: 1.16.0+dfsg1-1~exp1ubuntu1
Confirmed not buggy in: 1.17.0+dfsg2-8~ubuntu0.17.04.1

I'm subscribed to -backports but not -proposed. As such, updating from
-backports is likely to fix the issue for anyone else who has it.
