[Bug 1775855] [NEW] Unable to deploy Bionic ppc64le on P8 systems (kernel-panic)

[Bug 36812]
Thanks Andreas, I had missed this in the previous discussion. First, I must say it's a very clever hack :) I have not looked at it deeply yet, but I have some initial questions: - Can you describe a bit how you imagine the changes to xkeyboard-config would look with this approach? - Do you think this can be done in a backwards compatible way? As far as xkbcommon is concerned, I am only interested in this scenario: old library (unaware of the new LockMods options) & new keymap (in textual form, modified with the new flags). X has more compatibility concerns, xkbcomp/client/server/libxkbfile/protocol/Xlib/etc, but allow me to ignore that for now. BTW: xkbcommon already supports noLock/noUnlock in LockMods (unlike xkbcomp), based on your work[1]. So I hope the approach does not rely on these not already working :) [1] https://github.com/xkbcommon/libxkbcommon/commit/7c5e79159b5f5cd533a078c7672705e2ffa0a798 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 Title: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/36812/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1768214] Re: error on ubuntu install
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted the installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you choose the "use entire disk" guided install option. ** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1768214 Title: error on ubuntu install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1768214/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1775486] Re: Bionic boot kernel oopses on Power
Hi Joseph, I couldn't exactly reproduce this as it happens during deployment. BUT the closest I could get was deploying 16.04.4 (4.13) and then installing 4.17 once I was up and running. So I did that, and I am able to reboot the system into 4.17: ubuntu@fesenkov:~$ uname -a Linux fesenkov 4.17.0-041700-generic #201806041953 SMP Mon Jun 4 20:33:53 UTC 2018 ppc64le ppc64le ppc64le GNU/Linux ubuntu@fesenkov:~$ Next I installed linux-image-generic from Cosmic which got me a combination of 16.04.4 with 4.15 (4.15.0-22) and that is not bootable due to the OOPses that lead me to this bug. So this is the matrix of what's been tested: 16.04.4 - 4.13 - Success 16.04.4 - 4.15 - Fail 16.04.4 - 4.17 - Success So 16.04.5 and 18.04(.1) are broken on this system. ** Tags added: kernel-fixed-upstream -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1775486 Title: Bionic boot kernel oopses on Power To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1775486/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1463909] [NEW] virtio: networking not working when guest's eth0 is not in promiscuous mode
You have been subscribed to a public bug: We are unable to get http responses from qemu guest machine until interface inside qemu guest machine is in promiscuous mode. Our configuration is following: | Host server| | /eth1.10(IP1)| LAN2-|-eth1-eth1.11(IP2)| | \eth1.12(IP3)| | | LAN1-|-eth0(IP4) | | / | | iptables[nat] | |/ || | Guest system | | tap0-|-eth0(guestIP)| Host server is connected to LAN1 with eth0 and to LAN2 with eth1. eth0 has IP4 assigned. eth1 is connected to the switch in trunk mode that has vlans 10, 11 and 12 allows. Thus in Host systems we have eth1.10, eth1.11 and eth1.12 interfaces with IP1, IP2 and IP3 respectfully. Inside Host systems we start Guest system using following command: > qemu-system-x86_64 -m 3G -nographic -monitor stdio -serial none -kernel /vmlinuz -initrd /webiface.gz -hda /data/data.img -net nic,model=virtio,macaddr=fe:32:31:30:29:00 -net tap,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no tap interface was created with commands: > ip tuntap add dev tap0 mode tap user user > > ip addr add 172.31.31.253/30 brd + dev tap0 > ip link set dev tap0 up Routing for packets comming from LAN1 or LAN2 to guest system is identical and is done by iptables DNAT target: > iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d -p tcp --dport 8580 -j DNAT > --to-destination :80 ... > iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d -p tcp --dport 8580 -j DNAT > --to-destination :80 Now the problem is that requests for @http://:8580/index.html@ stall, until we put eth0 on Guest system in promiscuous mode. Note this concerns only packets coming through eth0 on Host system. Requests for @http://:8580/index.html@ work as the should! It is really strange how promiscuous mode of the interface on guest system affects the way it receives packets. So we did further debuging with tcpdump. For interesting (broken) case when packets arrive through eth0 of Host system, using tcpdump, we found that syn requests are coming out at tap0 interface: > 12:40:11.049007 c2:30:61:72:8d:14 > fe:32:31:30:29:00, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 74: .45661 > .80: Flags [S], seq 1998302974, win 29200, options [mss 1352,sackOK,TS val 3509464 ecr 0,nop,wscale 7], length 0 but no packet arrives on guest's eth0 interface! We confirmed that with tcpdump running with promiscuous mode disabled. So packets gone out from tap0 but never archived eth0 of the Guest system! Of course, once we run tcpdump without -p, guest interface will run in promiscuous mode and all packets/traffic will be visible on Guest also and everything works as expected. ifconfig shows no drops on tap0 interface. I've check MAC addresses of tap0(c2:30:61:72:8d:14) and guest's eth0 (fe:32:31:30:29:00). I don't see problem here. We've tried with eth1 interface not configured (no vlans) and still have this problem. This is Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS server system with 3.2.0-67-generic kernel and QEMU emulator version 1.0 (qemu-kvm-1.0), Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard. [Bug 36812]
Dear xorg developers. This is an old bug. In fact this is a 13 years old bug. And it has been at least 7 years since this bug had a patch to fix it. Yes, existing patch breaks specification. But one would seem that the fact that patch existed for 7 years and was applied by default by popular distributions without users` complains would suggest that existing patch is a practical solution to the problem despite breaking theoretical (and as discussed here - not well thought through) specification. There is now once more spike of activity here - probably because Ubuntu 17.04 was released recently which dropped this patch because it was not compatible with newer xorg. kyak has provided an updated patch, but it would take a lot of time for distributions to pick it up and then circle would repeat with next xorg version. Yes, there has been a few heated discussions around this patch and XKB specification. And yes, specifications are important, but this is really annoying problem for people with more than one keyboard layout. Annoying to the point of making xorg really unusable for some groups of people. So is there any chance to get more practical with this bug? For example, kyak's patch has a function 'xkbSwitchGroupOnRelease' that is a stub to make new behaviour controllable by configuration. Would xorg maintainers find this patch acceptable to upstream if that function read value from some environment variable and only turned new behaviour on if it was set? I feel like it would allow XKB spec to stay and also would allow users affected by this problem to solve it without recompiling xorg - which average user would struggle to do. Looking forward to your reply. [Bug 1772798] Re: Unity: Force start background plugin
** Description changed: If a user, already running a Gnome session upgrades or install unity by installing unity-session, background plugin doesn't start automatically (with u-s-d). [Bug 1774950] Re: Suspend fails in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 18.04 but works fine in Ubuntu and Kubuntu 17.10 (and on Kubuntu 18.04 using kernel 4.14.47)
@Mark Stosberg - thank you for adding your voice to the bug report. I was wondering if this particular bug was mainly to do with Bay Trail (Celeron/Atom) based CPU's using an SSD as their main storage, but if it is affecting the Dell XPS 9370 then that rather scuppers my theory ;) Can you just confirm that you've tried to get suspend working using the nouveau.modeset=0 trick (you have nVidia graphics?) and also checking whether it's an s2idle problem? There are a list of steps with details here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029474/ubuntu-18-04-dell- xps13-9370-no-longer-suspends-on-lid-close/1044270#1044270 I've been assuming that some XPS 9370's have resolved their suspend issues with other fixes because the answer by monty47 was accepted. If you could confirm that none of the other solutions gave good results and only by using a 4.14 kernel on 18.04 solved the suspend issue, then that would really help. And also force me to rethink my theory :) Please include your hardware - CPU, RAM and storage device (It's an SSD right?). [Bug 1617022] Re: box width not resized for pam messages
This bug affects us too. We tried working around the issue by switching to a locale which provides timestamps in a shorter format by default (e.g. DD.MM.YY) so it would still fit into the greeter box, but apparently simply overriding $LANG and $LC_TIME is not enough to affect the PAM messages. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1617022 Title: box width not resized for pam messages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/1617022/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1775857] [NEW] libreoffice hangs on startup
Public bug reported: I've been using libreoffice off and on for a few years. When I tried to use it today on my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system, it wouldn't come up. Clicking on the icons causes no action. Running "libreoffice" from the command line silently hangs (nothing is printed, but the process doesn't return). I can control-C it. I tried "apt-get remove libreaoffice" followed by "apt-get install libreoffice" to no avail. I tried renaming ~/.config/libreoffice to ~/.config/libreoffice-hang, but also to no avail. I can run "libreoffice --version": $ libreoffice --version LibreOffice 5.1.6.2 10m0(Build:2) And if I try to run it without an X11 display set, it gives an error: $ libreoffice /usr/bin/libreoffice: 56: cd: can't cd to /afs/cs.uwm.edu/users/csfac/boyland/etc/dept/2018-05-25 No protocol specified Failed to open display No protocol specified /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice.bin X11 error: Can't open display: Set DISPLAY environment variable, use -display option or check permissions of your X-Server (See "man X" resp. [Bug 36812]
No, I am only talking about myself, as a developer of xkbcommon; as I said, I am not a xorg developer so I cannot speak for that. I do not really mind if the spec is actually changed or not, what I am interested in is: 1. A clear and precise description of the proposed change. 2. A serious consideration of how other parts of the spec may be affected by the change. You know how you want it to behave, so just write it down in the form a patch against the spec. Then we can discuss further, with the goal of reaching a solution in xkbcommon, at least. Let me know if you (or anyone else who wants to do it) need any help. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/36812 Title: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/36812/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
