oh sorry, so "safe graphics" boots.. and dmesg is from that, it doesn't

if the bootup gfx is missing then it seems i915.ko kernel driver is

[Bug 2061551] Re: Merely booting Ubuntu 24.04 beta live CD breaks BitLocker & booting anything using Shim

2024-04-16 Thread Mate Kukri
I am still pretty sure it is the variable storage failure mode we are
seeing in this firmware. I also personally own an ASUS device with
firmware from 2019 and I managed to reach the same failure mode on it
even when using Mantic.

Also let me try to explain why errors crop up in other places too:

You can see multiple failures besides 'tpm_measure_variable()' including:
- 'Create SbatLevelRT : Volume Full',
- 'Create MokListRT: Volume Full', and
- 'import_mok_state() failed Volume Full' on the last image.

These all internally call `SetVariable()`.

The reason I suspect 'tpm_measure_variable()' also fails is because
presumably it tries to internally write to the varstore and then
propagates this error.

Also keep in mind the used space and percentage indicator provided by
the kernel for efivarfs might very well not be accurate at all.

If disabling Secure Boot really isn't enough, you can try removing shim-signed
and then installing just GRUB on this device.

[Bug 2059898] Re: Subiquity fails to download packages after ignoring mirror test result

2024-04-16 Thread Olivier Gayot
** Description changed:

  Context
  ---
  * We have a screen in Subiquity where the user can provide the URL of the
mirror to use for the installation. E.g., http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu.
After setting the URL, Subiquity automatically "tests" the mirror by running a
minimal apt-get update.
- * Currently, if the test fails, the user can select a different mirror or
continue despite the failure. Continuing despite the failure usually leads to
an error (and therefore a failed installation) when fetching a package later in
the installation.
+ * Currently, if the test fails, the user can select a different mirror or
continue despite the failure. Continuing despite the failure usually leads to
an error (and therefore a failed installation) when fetching a package at a
later during the installation.
  * The other option is for the user to go back to the network screen and
disable all the NICs - resulting in a fully offline installation. This is
hardly a solution when installing over the network..

  Request
  ---
  * Change the behavior (and adjust the TUI) of Subiquity when the user decides
to ignore a mirror testing failure. Instead of offering to continue anyway, we
will offer to continue without fetching packages from over the network (meaning
that only packages from the pool are considered for installation).
  * This will mimic the behavior already implemented for autoinstalls when
fallback: offline-install is used [1]

  What could go wrong
  ---
  * The late UI change may lead to translations not being up to date in time
for the release.
- * If anybody is using the ability to "continue anyway" in the UI, they might
be confused by the sudden behavior change. That being said, there is hardly any
valid use-case where "continue anyway" would be a real solution in practice. It
was more intended for testing/debugging purposes. Furthermore, people can still
skip the test while it is running ; which isn't impacted by this change.

[Bug 2061743] [NEW] Revert back to Debian non-t64 packages?

2024-04-16 Thread Simon Josefsson
Public bug reported:

Hi

I'm maintainer of the Debian Shishi package and also upstream of this
package.

You opened bug about t64 API and uploaded renamed packages into Debian:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1062896

However my analysis is that no package renames is necessary since
libshishi always used 64-bit time_t even on 32-bit hosts. So I have
reverted the package rename in Debian. See analysis:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1062896#24

Would it be possible to revert the package renaming in Ubuntu? As far
as I can tell, that will just cause package syncing incompatibility
going forward.

If you have any more information about why you believe shishi is
affected by any time_t migration API/ABI issue, and actually need a
package rename to uphold ABI on armhf, of course that would be welcome.

/Simon

[Bug 2061745] Re: Please demote golang-1.21 to universe

2024-04-16 Thread Lukas Märdian
I couldn't find any pointers in germinate output that would indicate it
pulling in by any 3rd party package. It seems to be pulling in itself,
through the generic "Extra-Includes: *-doc" stanza in the supported
seed.

So just demoting it should be fine IMO.

[Bug 2061745] Re: Please demote golang-1.21 to universe

2024-04-16 Thread Shengjing Zhu
Currently reverse deps for golang-1.21

$ reverse-depends -r noble -b src:golang-1.21
Reverse-Testsuite-Triggers
==
* runc-app  (for golang-1.21-go)

Reverse-Build-Depends
=
* containerd-app(for golang-1.21-go)
* docker-buildx (for golang-1.21-go)
* docker-compose-v2 (for golang-1.21-go)
* docker.io-app (for golang-1.21-go)
* hugo  (for golang-1.21-go)
* hugo  (for golang-1.21-src)
* runc-app  (for golang-1.21-go)

containerd-app and runc-app are in main, but it's fine for main package
using build-deps from universe.

However one thing that is not catched by reverse-depends is

nullboot still has Built-Using reference on golang-1.21. nullboot is not
possible to rebuild in noble currently as the shim dep is not available
in noble.

$ apt show nullboot
Package: nullboot
Version: 0.5.0-0ubuntu3
Built-Using: golang-1.21 (= 1.21.8-1), shim-signed (= 1.56+15.7-0ubuntu1)

[Bug 2059847] Re: Input lag or freezes on Nvidia desktops with X11 after logging "MetaSyncRing: Sync object is not ready -- were events handled properly?"

2024-04-16 Thread Robin Bonicel
I opened a similar bug and @vanvugt advised me to come here.
I read everything and will try the PPA if need be.

But I'm using a driver that nobody mentioned, which was selected by Dell who
assembled the machine and installed the OS.
On Nvidia driver section, I'm using "Set the power ondemand mode by default
from oem-fix-gfx-nvidia-ondemandmode". I also have drives 535 and 470 available
in the menu, but when I install them, my default setting disappears. I had to
fully reinstall the OS to get it back. Nvidia themselves advise on their
download page to not necessarily use their proprietary drivers on some Linux
distribs, so I stuck with my default driver.

Will the PPA and the mutter downgrade be of use with this default setting ?
Also, installing proprietary pilot from the Software & update menu raised an
error, so I aborted the process.

I'm running :

- Ubuntu 22.4.04 LTS
- GNOME 42.9 (latest official update)
- X11
- NVIDIA T400 4GB

Thank you

yes please do so and thanks for the proper re-classification.

if i am not mistaken i couldn't mark this a security issue w/o creating
this non-public, even though I thought this description is not very
sensitive.

(edit: found the right option for security public. is this only visible
after the bug is submitted, or did I simply miss this?)

[Bug 2048517] Re: EPYC-Rome model without XSAVES may break live migration since the removal of the flag on the physical CPU

2024-04-16 Thread Giuseppe Petralia
Hello Sergio,

thanks for providing the patch.

I have installed qemu on my test machine. The new epyc-rome-v4 is now
listed by qemu

```
# qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -cpu help| grep -i epyc-rome-v
x86 EPYC-Rome-v1  AMD EPYC-Rome Processor
x86 EPYC-Rome-v2  AMD EPYC-Rome Processor
x86 EPYC-Rome-v3  AMD EPYC-Rome-v3 Processor
x86 EPYC-Rome-v4  AMD EPYC-Rome-v4 Processor (no XSAVES)
```

But I am not able to have the VM dropping xsaves.

I have stopped/started the VM running on my host but it is still
requiring the xsaves feature. Same for newly created VMs on the host,
they still require the xsaves feature, that means can't be migrated to
hosts which have already dropped the xsaves cpu flag. I have also tried
to restart nova-compute and libvirtd but still the same:

```
# virsh dumpxml instance-005ac280  | grep xsaves
```

I believe this patch is not enough to allow migrations between hosts
with xsaves and w/o xsaves or I am missing some steps.

[Bug 2058133] Re: [SRU] update-manager crashes when ua security-status response is an error

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
SRU Team: The phasing in 22.04 was blocked due to LP:2004482. That is
not a problem of update-manager though, but caused by a namespace
conflict between ubuntu-advantage-tools and opcua-client-gui when
installed via Pip[1].

I think therefore that the phasing should be continued.

[Bug 2060778] Re: netplan, multiple dhcp route with metric failure

2024-04-16 Thread Csillagszemű Pityesz
As far as I know I am not using NetworkManager, 'nmcli dev' shows the
following:

DEVICE  TYPE  STATE   CONNECTION
virbr0  bridgenem kezelt  --
vm-br0  bridgenem kezelt  --
lan ethernet  nem kezelt  --
lo  loopback  nem kezelt  --
iscsi   vlan  nem kezelt  --
vm  vlan  nem kezelt  --

('nem kezelt' means not managed; the 'iscsi' interface is a statically
configured vlan device to access the VM storage backend)

My usecase is somewhat special as I use the desktop distribution with a
somewhat more complicated setup than usual because I need to use
networked VMs for my work. I am using networkd as I thought it would be
more appropriate than NetworkManager.

Upon further investigation to the original matter I believe it is really
an issue with systemd-resolved instead of netplan, so sorry for taking
your time. My local router resolves hostnames differently for the host
and the VM networks. After startup or issuing a 'netplan apply' after
resume the resolver for the host ('lan' network) is being used as
primary, BUT after resume not issuing a 'netplan apply' command somehow
the resolver for the VM network takes precedence - which is bad. Then
the host will obviously try to access the 'misresolved' systems through
the wrong gateway, which is really only the symptom not the cause.

[Bug 2060575] Re: gnome-keyring fails to automatically unlock login keyring after recent updates in noble

2024-04-16 Thread Jan Visser
I noticed another problem which makes me wonder if it's related to this.
When you unlock the keyring yourself it still fails to unlock ssh keys.

If you do:
$ export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/gcr/ssh
it starts working again.

Is this related or should I report a separate bug?

[Bug 2061754] [NEW] nullboot 0.5.1

2024-04-16 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
new upstream release; usual dependency updates per Go MIR policy; aligning with
snapd 2.62; and support for shim 15.8 per the secboot dependency update.

Targeted releases:

1. noble
2. jammy; after/when shim 15.8 lands there
3. focal; after/when shim 15.8 lands there

[Test plan]
* Test suite passes

* Deploy Azure CVM and TPM FDE
* Upgrade to this new package and reboot
* Boot should be successful
* Double check bios_measurements_log to ensure that the newly update shim was
used for boot
(https://github.com/canonical/tcglog-parser/tree/master/tcglog-dump can be used
to extract checksum of the shim binary used at boot and compared to the one
shipped in nullboot)

* CPC - build new image with nullboot preinstalled, and attempt to
register and boot such an images as first time.

We have set block-proposed to allow testing in noble-proposed to be
carried out before migration to noble release pocket.

[Where problems could occur]
Resealing of Azure CVM machines could fail and they would need to be unlocked
with a recovery key.

related to the Ubuntu package. I will happily reopen the issue if the

[Bug 1990450] Re: Show potential Ubuntu Pro updates and apt news messages

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
In a Xenial virtual machine, installed update-manager from proposed
(.21), confirmed there were updates available with pro security-status.

With unattached machine, opened update-manager and confirmed the 'Ubuntu
Pro security updates (Enable in Settings...)' section at the bottom of
the updates list.

I attached the machine to Pro, restarted update-manager and verified
that the section was now 'Ubuntu Pro security updates' with installable
Pro packages.

The news were too old according to motd.ubuntu.com and therefore I did
the Nginx procedure as in #31 and confirmed that a news section shows up
with the set up message.

[Bug 2061739] Re: crash in meta_wayland_transaction_commit

2024-04-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

** Changed in: nullboot (Ubuntu Noble)
   Status: New => Fix Committed

+ new upstream release; usual vendored dependency updates per Go MIR policy
(vendor/ directory is automatically generated by go mod vendor based on
go.mod); aligning with snapd 2.62; and support for shim 15.8 per the secboot
dependency update.

  Targeted releases:

  1. noble
  2. jammy; after/when shim 15.8 lands there

  [Test plan]
  * Test suite passes

  * Deploy Azure CVM and TPM FDE
  * Upgrade to this new package and reboot
  * Boot should be successful
  * Double check bios_measurements_log to ensure that the newly update shim was
used for boot
(https://github.com/canonical/tcglog-parser/tree/master/tcglog-dump can be used
to extract checksum of the shim binary used at boot and compared to the one
shipped in nullboot)

  Resealing of Azure CVM machines could fail and they would need to be unlocked
with a recovery key.

[Bug 1949314] Re: intel_gpu_top crashes with intel_gpu_top: ../tools/intel_gpu_top.c:1202: print_percentage_bar: Assertion `max_len > 0' failed.

2024-04-16 Thread Hector CAO
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  When resizing the terminal window, intel_gpu_top may crash if the window
  becomes small enough. The output when it crashes is:

  intel_gpu_top: ../tools/intel_gpu_top.c:1202: print_percentage_bar: Assertion
  `max_len > 0' failed.

  The fix has been reported and fixed upstream recently :
  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/igt-gpu-tools/-/issues/143

  The fix has been part of a serie of fixes that improve intel_gpu_top UI
  behavior for some corner cases :
  https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/124890/

  The proposed fix consists of backporting these fixes to affected Ubuntu
  releases (Jammy, Mantic and Noble)

  Tvrtko Ursulin (4):
- tools/intel_gpu_top: Fix clients header width when no clients
- tools/intel_gpu_top: Fix client layout on first sample period
-   tools/intel_gpu_top: Optimise interactive display a bit
- tools/intel_gpu_top: Handle narrow terminals more gracefully

+   tools/intel_gpu_top: Fix client layout on first sample period
+   tools/intel_gpu_top: Optimise interactive display a bit
+   tools/intel_gpu_top: Handle narrow terminals more gracefully
+
+ NOTES:
+ For Noble, all the 4 patches will be backported
+ For Mantic, Jammy, only "tools/intel_gpu_top: Handle narrow terminals more
gracefully" will be backported because the others are not applicable to
Jammy/Mantic (related to refactoring that happened after Mantic release)

  [ Test Plan ]

  Run intel_gpu_top inside a console
  Resize the console with the mouse to it smallest size

  [ Where problems could occur ]

  The problem occurs when intel_gpu_top try to draw information on the

  [ Other Info ]

  This fix should not cause regression on any other feature.

[Bug 2045918] Re: [SRU] Fix crash caused by updating update-manager from inside itself

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
In Xenial virtual machine, I had .17 in xenial-updates installed,
started update-manager from a terminal, selected 'Software Updater' in
the list and clicked 'Install now'.

The installation completed successfully and the view was automatically
recalculated. The application didn't crash (no tracebacks in the
terminal window) and 'apt policy update-manager' says that the installed
version is .21.

2024-04-16 Thread Nathan Teodosio
I got a Xenial ISO and run it in a virtual machine.

Enabled proposed and now upgrading update-manager forces the
installation of a newer ubuntu-advantage-tools:

--->
$ sudo apt install update-manager --verbose-versions
...
The following packages will be upgraded:
   python3-update-manager (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
   ubuntu-advantage-tools (10ubuntu0.16.04.1 => 31.2.2~16.04)
   update-manager (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
   update-manager-core (1:16.04.17 => 1:16.04.21)
<---

I confirm then that launching and finishing update-manager without
internet connection produces no error any more.

[Bug 2028891] Re: HTTP boot grub issue

2024-04-16 Thread Pawel Baldysiak
Hi,
I tested this with latest ubuntu 22.04 snapshot, and the issue still occurs.
I was able to workaround it by replacing grub on http server from the one from
Mantic Minotaur (grub-efi-arm64-signed_1.197+2.12~rc1-10ubuntu4_arm64.deb).
Are there any plans of fixing that in near future?

Thanks
Pawel

2024-04-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It's not just Hyper-V. For some reason I get the same bug whenever I
install the Nvidia 470 driver. And there's also bug 2061364.

** Summary changed:

- No login prompt after installing in HyperV
+ No login prompt or user list on login screen [JS ERROR: TypeError:
this._button is undefined]

** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
   Importance: High => Critical

** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)
Milestone: None => ubuntu-24.04

[Bug 2060429] Re: lubuntu noble - /usr/libexec/fixconkeys-part2 failed to finish in 30 seconds.

2024-04-16 Thread Chris Guiver
repeated install (using existing partition) to
- dell [optiplex] 780 (c2q-q9400, 8gb, amd/ati cedar radeon hd
5000/6000/7350/8350)

again this issue

The install abends (abnormal end) with error & thus doesn't
continue/complete install...

/var/log/installer/mediainfo OR all contents in /var/log/installer
reflect a prior install (many ago).. but this install type is successful
..  after all it's a non-destructive install (no-format) so much data
survives from pre-install (date/time stamps of system directories match
new install though, as most system directories get wiped)
