I guess the reason is that it ries to run an option from the commandline arguments which should be run as a dry-run. However, it tries to run a non-existing argument since it wasn't specified. I can confirm this issue in wesnoth 1:1.8.6-1 on Ubuntu Oneiric. I have attached a screenshot demonstrating one dialog which shows translated strings and one menu which show the squares.
