I believe you can try and use the actual sound card device for your
microphone for skype, and use the pulse option as your output. I believe
the perfect setup page on the pulseaudio wiki explains this better.

Re: [Bug 275233] Re: canberra-gtk-play crashed with SIGSEGV in pa_operation_unref()

2008-10-16 Thread Luke Yelavich
This crash is caused by what is known as a race condition, where
canberra-gtk-play plays a sound, and pulseaudio is either not ready, or
not running. If the sound plays, then pulseaudio is not always able to
make use of the audio device, or, you get the crash as reported here.

I have a work-around to attempt to prevent this crash from occurring, so
please test and report back by following the below steps:

1. Move /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop out of the way, i.e so it doesn't
exist in that directory.
2. Place the attached 70pulseaudio file in /etc/X11/Xsession.d.
3. Place the attached pulse-session file into /usr/bin, and chmod it 755.

Then log in again, and let me know the results.

Thanks.

Please sync mol 0.9.72.1~dfsg-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
Extra build dependencies were added in Ubuntu to fix an FTBFS.
Debian now has these build dependencies added.

Changelog since current jaunty version 0.9.72.1~dfsg-1ubuntu1:

mol (0.9.72.1~dfsg-2) unstable; urgency=low

  [Gaudenz Steinlin]
  * recommend bzip2 in mol-source
  * add Homepage control field
  * update debian/copyright
- list individual copyright holders
- add instructions on how to build the repackaged debian source tarball
  (previously in REDAME.Debian-source)
  * fix FTBFS of mol-source with kernel >= 2.6.24 by applying patches from the
upstream SVN repository (Closes: #445359)
  * add /svn/ to the XS-Vcs-Svn control field
  * Added x11proto-xext-dev and libxext-dev to build-dependencies

  [Jörg Sommer]
  * debian/rules:
+ General overhaul. Now it supports DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt and
sets -g in CFLAGS by default. This is policy conform behaviour.

+ Added the get-orig-target as suggested by the policy.

  * debian/control:
+ Removed m4 from the Build-Depends field. It's no longer needed after
the overhault of the rules file.

+ Added me to the uploaders field.

  * debian/mol.menu:
+ Adapted to the new menu structure.

  * debian/Makefile.mol-source: (the Makefile in the mol-source package)
+ Made make sensible for the return value of the make calls for
build and install the module. (closes: #412756)

  * debian/debian.mol-source/rules
+ Removed the kdist_changes, source and diff targets. They are
  obsoleted.

Re: [Bug 274124] Re: Race condition in pulseaudio loading for GNOME session

2008-10-14 Thread Luke Yelavich
Ok, those of you still experiencing this race condition, please do the
following:

With the above steps, I am attempting to move the pulseaudio startup
even further back in the X login procedure, to give it more time to
settle before the startup sound plays, and so pulse is more or less
ready when GNOME's sound support from gnome-settings-daemon is loaded.

Please get back to me ASAP, so I can get an upload in before release
freeze.

Thanks

Luke

2008-10-21 Thread Luke Yelavich
Adding packages to a metapackage like ubuntustudio-video is actually
done in quite a different way, and is a two step process. A bzr branch
with files listing the packages that should be part of the metapaqckage
needs to be modified to add the package in question. Then the
ubuntustudio-meta package has to be re-generated to add the changes from
the bzr branch. In order to change the branch, you have to be a member
of the ubuntustudio-dev team in Launchpad.

We are at RC freeze now, so we are out of time to add this package for
intrepid, however it will be added for jaunty.

Could you pleas state what version of Ubuntu you are using? If you are
using Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid, could you plesae try playing audio without
pulseaudio loaded? To do this, run "pulseaudio -k" from a terminal, and
attempt to play audio.

Thanks.

2008-09-24 Thread Luke Yelavich
As for the jack module, this is currently not possible to have built in
the archive, due to the separation between main and universe components.
Jack currently lives in universe, whereas pulseaudio is in main.
packages that are in main cannot be built against packages in universe,
whereas packages in universe can be built against packages in main. The
same thing applies with restricted and multiverse. Restricted packages
can be built against main and restricted packages. Multiverse packages
can be built against main, restricted, universe, and multiverse
packages.

2008-09-28 Thread Luke Yelavich
For those who have tried the test package I linked to and found it
didn't work, this package is for intrepid only. It cannot be installed
on hardy due to the version of libasound2 that is required.

For those of you who have tried the test package and found that things
still don't work, please try the following:

1. SHut down/kill pulseaudio. This can be done either by running "killall
pulseaudio" or "pulseaudio -k", the latter probably being more full-proof.
2. Delete all .pulse related files from your home directory, "cd ; rm -r
.pulse*" should do the trick.
3. YOu can either log out and back in, reboot, or restart pulseaudio with
"pulseaudio -D --log-target=syslog"

Then try playing audio as you have previously and let me know the
results.

Thanks.

This is not anything to worry about.

What did you do to attempt to play sound, and what errors if any, did
you get?

Could you try going to System, Preferences, and choose sound, and
attempt to test the sound output options there, when they are set to
either PulseAudio or ALSA?

Thanks.

Could you please try to do the following:

1. Kill pulseaudio, either by using "killall pulseaudio" or "pulseaudio -i"

4. Restart pulseaudio, either by rebooting, logging out and back in, or running

If you have the pavucontrol package installed, I suggest you run pavucontrol
and see what output pulseaudio is using by default. If you could also give me
the contents
of your /proc/asound/cards that would also be much appreciated. I suspect your

not set as
the default.

Do you have any .asoundrc files in your home directory? If so, try
moving them away, or if you don't want them any more, delete them.

This is interesting, as if you get no error then the package I linked to
worked, but you still don't get any sound. Could you check syslog at the
time you play a file say with rhythmbox or totem, and tell me if you see
anything?

Does this happen every single time you try and play something through
pulseaudio? If so, there is something else on your system that is not
set correctly. With the package I linked to above, on a fresh install, I
can use rhythmbox through pulseaudio or alsa without any issues.

Thanks for helping to troubleshoot this further.

[Bug 237375] Re: Library to share audio between PulseAudio and Alsa

2008-06-04 Thread Luke Yelavich
In order to use alsa via pulseaudio, you need to install the
libasound2-plugins package.

As for making it the default, this is not possible, as kubuntu/xubuntu
use the same libraries, for alsa, but don't use pulseaudio. Making
pulseaudio the default would only force them to use pulseaudio, which
they don't want to.

[Bug 237375] Re: Doing alsa applications to share sound with pulseaudio

2008-06-04 Thread Luke Yelavich
The reason why alsa can't be set up to send all audio through pulseaudio
is because the configuration files that need to be changed in order to
do this are in libasound2, which is needed by all the Ubuntu flavours,
Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc. Setting alsa to go through pulseaudio would only
break these desktops. Added to that, it would also break audio outside a
user's desktop session, for example the sound you hear when the login
screen appears.

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:

As shown in the debian changelog below, the Ubuntu changes, the fixing of the
typo for the python package, as well as updating copyright_hints are now in
Debian. This revision from Debian also brings
several improvements such as gettext localization, documentation and better
package separation.

[Bug 279288] Re: User interface exception request: Ask the user if they wish to activate dmraid arrays.

2008-10-09 Thread Luke Yelavich
Debdiffs for partman-base and hw-detect.

** Summary changed:

- Alternative installer forces use of dmraid (FakeRAID)
+ User interface exception request: Ask the user if they wish to activate
dmraid arrays.

** Description changed:

I wanted to install the 8.10 beta with the alternative install CD.
I'm using a Asus P5B as my motherboard and have two (SATA) HDDs. All
"hardware" RAID options in my BIOS are turned off.
I was not able to install Ubuntu on only one HDD with the text installer.
Also I was not able to setup a software RAID-1 with mdadm during the
installtion. The options to setup a software RAID appeared but I was not able
to setup a RAID-1 with mdadm as it was possible in earlier releases.
The setup detects my 2 HDDs as one drive. This, I think, is because dmraid
merges the 2 HDDs to one "virtual" drive.
I can't see any option to deactivate dmraid.

I see a big problem here when installing Ubuntu to a system with 2 HDDs.
The content of both disk will be deleted even if you want to make
  changes to only one disk.
+
+ Rationale for user exception freeze:
+ As indicated above, the user, dispite having all RAID options turned off in
their BIOS, has remnants of a dmraid configuration left on their hard drive,
which they don't want to use. It is wrong to force users to use such a
configuratino when they don't want to do so, especially if the BIOS, dispite
having RAID options disabled, is badly designed enough to leave the metadata
for the configuration lying around.
+
+ The attached debdiffs for partman-base and hw-detect implement this
+ question. The actual UI change is in hw-detect/disk-detect. The change
+ in partman-base is needed to ensure that if the user says no to using
+ the dmraid arrays, the disk drives show up as normal.

[Bug 281044] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Feature Freeze Exception: freedesktop-sound-theme 0.1

2008-10-09 Thread Luke Yelavich
Public bug reported:

Rationale:
Gnome 2.24 uses a different framework for playing sound events called
libcanberra. Libcanberra will not play any sound themes unless it can find the
freedesktop sound theme to fall back on, in the event that a sound for a
particular event cannot be found.

Ubuntu currently doesn't have this theme in a stand-alone package in the
archive. It has been packaged for Debian, however it has been rejected
for licensing reasons.

Attached are debian/control and debian/copyright which explain the
package's use, and licenses for the sounds that are included.

Intrepid needs this package if any support for sound theme playback is
desired.

How are you trying to play audio? Are you using applications that use

have you changed any settings in the files located in /etc/pulseaudio?
Is the login sound also crackling/making odd noises?

Looking at the code for libcanberra, this would in fact be very easy to
do, and will also get rid of a nasty race condition where the
freedesktop theme is sometimes favoured over the ubuntu theme, even
though the ubuntu theme is set as the default.

I'll test this approach.

Re: [Bug 226894] Re: Backlight control does not work on MacBook Pro 3.1

2008-10-06 Thread Luke Yelavich
As far as I am aware, for MacBook Pro 3,1 and 4,1, the mbp_nvidia_bl
module is what is needed to make the backlight usable. I have a 4,1, and
with latest hal, my backlight control is broken when I have that module
loaded.

I will have a dig in the hal package to see what has been c hanged.

Re: [Bug 274124] Re: Sound no longer working after kernel upgrade to 2.6.27-4

2008-10-06 Thread Luke Yelavich
Could everybody please drop the attached file into /usr/bin, making sure
its name esdcompat stays the same. This will overwrite an existing file
there.

The change i've made is to prevent pulseaudio from playing whil the
login sound is also playing.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Luke

Re: [Bug 276095] [NEW] Debian patch for bug #494278 removes intel raid 10 support

2008-10-06 Thread Luke Yelavich
Compiling and installing a newer version of dmraid is not enough for the
newer dmraid to help your system boot. You need to generate a new
initramfs to include the new dmraid executable.

If I get time in the coming days, I will make an rc15 package for you to
test.

For now, I'll consider re-enabling the patch, as no Ubuntu users have
reported having issues with this patch, and you're the first one who has
reported having a problem with this patch disabled.

Thanks

Re: [Bug 279467] [NEW] Pulseaudio and Alsa stopped working in Intrepid

2008-10-06 Thread Luke Yelavich
Do you hear any login sound at all, and have you tried killing
pulseaudio and restarting it?

To kill and restart pulseaudio, do the following:
$ pulseaudio -k
$ pulseaudio -D --log-target=syslog

2008-10-07 Thread Luke Yelavich
Ok. Can everybody please run the following command? It disables the event
sounds, as I want to see if audio problems still remain if there is no login
sound:
$ gconftool-2 -s -t bool /desktop/gnome/sound/event_sounds false

Please try the above and report back.

Re: [Bug 276095] [NEW] Debian patch for bug #494278 removes intel raid 10 support

2008-10-07 Thread Luke Yelavich
Ok, when you built dmraid there was probably a chance that dmraid ended
up in /usr/local/bin. If so, move /usr/local/bin/dmraid to
/usr/bin/dmraid, and regenerate the initramfs.

I am interested in whether rc15 fixes your problem.

Re: [Bug 268390] Re: FFE request: Update of espeak to 1.39.

2008-09-15 Thread Luke Yelavich
Attached is a diffstat of the overall differences between 1.38 and 1.39,
a diff of the source code changes between sed versions, and a diff of
the dictionary source files between source versions, not that it means
much, but is there for completeness.

Yes, the phoneme changes cannot be represented, as they are binary, but
have been tested and are an improvement over the versions in 1.38.

Re: [Bug 270981] [NEW] ALSA problems with SB600/X1200 sound: reduced mixer/internal sound

2008-09-16 Thread Luke Yelavich
Please have a read of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems,
and run the alsa-info script linked to that page. Then attach the output
of alsa-info.sh to this bug report.

Since you are using a much newer kernel version, and therefore a newer
alsa driver version, this issue may also be caused by an alsa library
and driver version mismatch. Intrepid alpha 6 will be released in a
couple of days, would you mind trying that out once its available? I can
give you a link as to where to download it when it is released.

Re: [Bug 268795] Re: Intrepid: please update virtualbox to 2.0

2008-09-16 Thread Luke Yelavich
ACK from me, due to being able to use 64-bit guests, which I know would
be very useful for many. Added to that, the kernel modules are using
DKMS, which will take away the burdon of keeping the virtualbox modules
up to date with newer intrepid kernels.

The only issue you may find is that if you dual boot with Windows,
Windows is not in the grub menu. This is known, and a fix will be
released as soon as possible.

Chris, I was reading the changelog for the latest 2.6.27 kernel thats
been uploaded to intrepid, and I think I remember seeing fixes for your

Thanks.
