[Bug 286119] Re: firefox 3.0.3 crashes (no SIG) on most pages w/ images when using nss_wins: 8.10beta AMD64

2009-05-04 Thread Michael
Please do not attend much time on this issue (liferea on Jaunty). More
and more I am convinced it is a local problem. You are all doing great
work. Don't be distracted of my local problem. Liferea works great now.
Let it rest (in my opinion).

@Thierry Carrez:
I answered with yes. Hmm, that indicates the patch was indeed already applied.
Strange that it had positive effect on the liferea bug...
And more strange: why did liferea WITH the patch still produces the crash???
The puzzle become more cloudy.
Maybe the segmentation fault has to do with another thing? Again, I attached
the gdb backtrace of the liferea crash in Jaunty...

[Bug 335803] Re: qt applications have render update delay in gnome when compiz is enabled

2009-06-24 Thread Michael
This is probably not a Qt bug - I see this with the title bars of all my
windows (Ubuntu-Gnome), which are not always updated correctly. It is
best seen in Firefox, where when I switch tabs a few times the title bar
often reflects the last tab to be selected, not the current one. It is
also noticeable as strange artefacts in the title bars of other
applications. Is is most noticeable though in VirtualBox, which is a Qt
application and shows this update problems throughout it's selector
window.

It also seems to be related to the graphic drivers in use (I am using
NVidia proprietary as I need Compiz and Nouveau isn't there yet :( ).
Other people have tested VirtualBox with compiz and other video drivers
without issues.

[Bug 396220] [NEW] automatic loggoff during internet surfing

2009-07-06 Thread michael
Public bug reported:

First of all I don't know how to recreate this bug. it happened two
times. While using firefox the screen gets black and a few seconds later
there is the GUI logon screen with the message "the user will be logged
on in xx seconds". After the counter has finished a the systems tries to
log on (the terminal is displayed a short time) and afterwards the logon
screen is displayed again. I can only restart the system to get ubuntu
work.

[Bug 230882] Re: opening a webcam-stream with xawtv

2009-07-14 Thread Michael
FWIW OV518+ cameras are now supported by the latest gspca driver (with
associated libv4l), hopefully included in 2.6.31. See
http://lists.rastageeks.org/pipermail/ov51x-jpeg/2009-June/thread.html

The same USB errors reported above also occur on every post-2.6.16
upstream kernel I tried (including 2.6.28). The upstream ov511 driver
maintainer appears to have gone inactive.

Subject: [Bug 270748] Re: ath9k wireless not working with AR9280

@Jim Lieb: yes, so it seems. My Amilo Pa 3553 has an AR928X. No
Bluetooth interference, as lsmod and lspci show nothing of the kind.
ath9k within 32-bit Jaunty does little more than bringing up kernel
module (not autodetected, added in /etc/modules) and dependent modules.
While looking for some clue about bad device initialization/enabling, I
only found these two data:

~$ sudo cat /sys/class/net/wmaster0/device/enable
1

~$ sudo cat /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/enable
1

no more at this time. A LED in the corner stays off, which could mean
the device to be OK and the radio to be just turned off; but I found no
sysvars about radio switching while peeking around the two ones you see
above. Nuff said, by now.

[Bug 320493] [NEW] GNU gnash brings the system to its knees

2009-01-23 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Installing the GNU gnash Firefox plugin ("apt-get install mozilla-
plugin-gnash") and opening the page
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/index.html in Firefox brings a fully
updated Ubuntu 8.10 to its knees to the point that I needed a hard
reboot to recover. This is reproducible, and setting
/proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory to 2 does not help. Obviously it is a
bug in gnash that it overloads the system like this, but it seems to me
to be a much worse bug in Ubuntu that it can't cope with this. I don't
know if it is possible to set up a modern Linux-based system to survive
this though.

[Bug 324365] [NEW] DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2009-02-02 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

This is half way between bug and feature request. When I install a new
kernel, DKMS rebuilds all modules it is in charge of next time I boot.
It would be very nice though if this were done as soon as the required
kernel headers package is installed, using a trigger on the package (or
whatever it is called), rather than slowing down the boot process.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2009-02-21 Thread Michael
This bug is critical in Hong Kong.
When I go to large stores, every PC comes with Microsoft Windows Vista 32-bit
pre-installed.
When I go to small shops, the specification lists usually don't include the
operating system but you may add HK$ 699 to get a copy of Microsoft Windows
Vista/XP pre-installed. (sorry, only Microsoft Windows Vista/XP 32-bit are
available)
There are no PCs with free OS available on the market.
I haven't seen any free OSes in a typical office yet.
GNU/Linux OSes are dominant in universities but every workstation still has a
copy of Microsoft Windows installed in the HDD
There are only very few secondary schools which have free OSes in their
computer rooms.
The textbooks used in primary/secondary schools are flooded with Microsoft
Windows and Microsoft Office.
In the HKCEE (equivalent to UK O-level), there is a subject called Computer and
Information Technology (abbr. CIT) starting from 2005. It consists of a core
modules and 4 selective modules. (A: programming, B: organization of computers,
C: networking, D: multimedia) In module D, even the examination paper contains
Windows-specific knowledge (taskmgr, etc)
Much of the govt material are still in the proprietary .doc format.
Among all people I know, only 2 uses GNU/Linux at home (excluding myself) and
only 1 has no Microsoft Windows installed at home.
When I teach some classmates to program in C++, I find some difficulties
because they are all using Microsoft Windows. (I wants to teach them using Unix
tools like man, kdbg, etc)
I wants to make my family to stop using Windows but my attempt failed because
they are using Windows-specific software.
In a typical computer magazine, about 50% of the contents are about Windows and
Windows software, 10% are about Mac OS X, 2% about GNU/Linux (Not every issue
has this 2%, it appears usually in contexts like virtualization, etc) and the
others are about hardware.

2009-03-15 Thread michael
Ok. It seems to happen after a prolonged power off.

To recreate the problem:
Using an ASUS M70Vm-x1, shut down ubuntu, do not do anything with the computer
for a number of hours, boot ubuntu.

The problem then appears.

[Bug 325314] [NEW] [Wishlist] local database for Apport

2009-02-04 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

It would be very nice if Apport could keep a regularly updated local
database of applications known to crash, containing the binary name, the
two (or three) top levels of the stack backtrace and the launchpad bug
number. Then, when it picked up a local crash, it could compare the
backtrace, and if the crash was already in launchpad, it could simply
open it directly in the web browser instead of reporting it again. This
might even make it feasible to enable Apport in releases by preventing
duplicate reports.

[Bug 324365] Re: DKMS should rebuild modules as soon as new headers are available

2009-02-04 Thread Michael
As I said, this happened when I booted the 2.6.27-11 kernel. I can't
say for sure now whether it happened the first time I booted it or not.
The modules definitely seemed to be rebuilt during boot (the bootsplash
stopped and I got the dkms output on the console).

Has anyone else reported this? If not, perhaps the most sensible course
of action would be for me to wait until it happens again (if it does).
That way I will be able to observe exactly what happens, and you can
tell me anything you would like me to look out for. And you can avoid
wasting too much time on this in the meantime :)

[Bug 345717] [NEW] (Jaunty) ACPI: expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0

2009-03-19 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

I downloaded and tried to load the 20090319 daily live CD image of the 32-bit
version of Jaunty Jackalope.
While booting up on one of my desktop computers with a ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2
motherboard, after the language window disappears a black screen appears with
one line of text at the top that states:
[1.] ACPI: expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0
and then the computer immediately shuts off.
I tried the same live CD image in my Toshiba A105-S2091 laptop computer and
Jaunty Jackalope booted up.
There was a black screen that appeared briefly with one line of text at the top
in the same sequence as desktop computer that states:
[] ACPI: DMI BIOS year ==0, assuming ACPI-compatible machine
but the screen disappeared after a few seconds and Jaunty Jackalope continued
booting normally.

Jackalope last week, so this got messed up in the last few days.

[Bug 332563] Re: gnome panel keeps freezing randomly

2009-04-16 Thread Michael
It just happened again, but unfortunately a pressed ctrl+c and the gdb
aborted. I should not have pressed ctrl+c because the gdb was already
stopped with error :

Program received signal SIGPIPE, Broken pipe.
[Switching to Thread 0xb6bc8970 (LWP 27323)]
0xb7f23430 in __kernel_vsyscall ()
(gdb)

The only thing I should have done was backtrace full,
instead I pressed ctrl+c

I give up.
In my root crontab I place the command pkill gnome-panel every 15 minutes.
I lousy solution.

Maybe someone else will ever try to reproduce this bug.

I installed the packages from your ppa, logged in, logged out and

but neither are high enough in the process list in top to be visible, so
I assume the problem is fixed. I will let you know if I see any more

[Bug 345717] Re: (Jaunty) ACPI: expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0

2009-04-22 Thread Michael
Update, April 22: I downloaded the release candidate image of Ubuntu 9.04 (x86
version) and it still has the identical problem.
I have the latest BIOS installed on the ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2 motherboard.
Since this bug causes a computer with the ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2 motherboard to
shut down before it can boot up completely with the live CD/DVD, I consider
this to be a critical bug for computers using an ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2
motherboard.

[Bug 366096] [NEW] default of python 2.5 breaks CommandNotFound import

2009-04-24 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: command-not-found

mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ apt-cache policy command-not-found
command-not-found:
  Installed: 0.2.34ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.2.34ubuntu3
  Version table:

mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

This is related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/command-not-found/+bug/234540 , where
setting python2.4 as the default on a python2.5 box broke CommandNotFound.
Having just updated from Intrepid to Jaunty, and setting python2.5 as the
default on my (suddenly) python2.6 box, CommandNotFound breaks.

mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ sudo rm /usr/bin/python && sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python2.5
/usr/bin/python
mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ l
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/command-not-found", line 8, in

mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ sudo rm /usr/bin/python && sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python2.6
/usr/bin/python
mgundl...@ubuntu:~$ l
bash: l: command not found
mgundl...@ubuntu:~$

Interestingly, I tried modifying /usr/lib/command-not-found to use
python2.6 explicitly instead of #!/usr/bin/python, and got the same
behavior. I'm guessing that command-not-found is called somewhere
within bash(?) as "python /usr/lib/command-not-found" instead of
"/usr/lib/command-not-found" or "python2.6 /usr/lib/command-not-found".

[Bug 345717] Re: (Jaunty) ACPI: expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0

2009-04-05 Thread Michael
** Description changed:

I downloaded and tried to load the 20090319 daily live CD image of the 32-bit
version of Jaunty Jackalope.
While booting up on one of my desktop computers with a ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2
motherboard, after the language window disappears a black screen appears with
one line of text at the top that states:
[1.] ACPI: expecting a [Reference] package element, found type 0
and then the computer immediately shuts off.
I tried the same live CD image in my Toshiba A105-S2091 laptop computer and
Jaunty Jackalope booted up.
There was a black screen that appeared briefly with one line of text at the
top in the same sequence as desktop computer that states:
[] ACPI: DMI BIOS year ==0, assuming ACPI-compatible machine
but the screen disappeared after a few seconds and Jaunty Jackalope continued
booting normally.

I later downloaded and tried to load the 20090319 daily live CD image of the
64-bit version of Jaunty Jackalope on the desktop computer (the laptop is not
64-bit compatible).
The 64-bit version experienced the identical problem as the 32-bit version
with error message and shutdown on the desktop computer.

This problem did not occur when I tried a daily live CD image of Jaunty
Jackalope last week, so this got messed up in the last few days.

Update: I downloaded and tried to load the 20090320 daily live CD image of
the 32-bit version of Jaunty Jackalope.
The problem on one of my desktop computers with a ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2
motherboard had not been resolved.
I tried the same 20090320 daily live CD image of the 32-bit version of Jaunty
Jackalope on my desktop computer with an ECS 945GCT-M/1333 motherboard, and the
ACPI error messages and system shutdown did not occur.

Update: I downloaded the beta release of Ubuntu 9.04 and it still has the
identical problem.
It would help if this problem got fixed at least enough to prevent the live
CD of Ubuntu 9.04 from powering down my computer with the ECS GeForce 6100PM-M2
motherboard before it can boot up completely.
+
+ Update, April 5: I downloaded the 20090403 daily build of Ubuntu 9.04 (x86
version) and it still has the identical problem.
+ It would be very annoying if this bug survives final release.

[Bug 332563] Re: gnome panel keeps freezing randomly

2009-04-15 Thread Michael
Yes this bug occurs a after a random time.
Very annoying.
When it happens I have a very clumsy solution for it:
CTRL-ALT-F1(or F2, F3,)
login as root
pkill gnome-panel
And then CTRL-ALT F7 or CTRL-ALT F9 (depending where the graphical X session is)
Then you have a working desktop again.

No, I didn't send the bug to GNOME; your previous text "to send to

Thanks Mr. Sebastien Bacher for your response on gdb for hanging software.
I assume that 'hanging' software is the same as 'running' software. Both has a

[Bug 362192] [NEW] Tracker indexer runs even when "enable indexing" is disabled

2009-04-16 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

I had "enable indexing" disabled for tracker almost from the beginning.
After upgrading to Jaunty yesterday, tracker-indexer suddenly started
running in the background, making the system more or less unusable.
This despite the fact that the indexing was still disabled. I have now
disabled trackerd autostart and shot down the processes, which has
solved the issue for now. Is this a bug, or a case of EBKAC?
