[Bug 25632] Re: SPDIF won't play PCM after playing AC3

2009-06-16 Thread Phil
I added this to the "One Hundred Paper Cuts" project. We've been
struggling with this bug for almost 4 years now! Even if it is an Alsa
bug, there has to be some sort of fix that the Ubuntu guys could
implement. Having to manually enter commands or run scripts every time
you switch audio sources is not something a new user wants to do
(especially if it's an IR controlled HTPC).

[Bug 25632] Re: SPDIF won't play PCM after playing AC3

2009-06-16 Thread Phil
I see that you don't think it is important, which I can understand.
Perhaps not too many people are using SPDIF (I have no idea of the
number/percent).

But I do think it is a big usability bug for the people who try to use
SPDIF. It was not added just because it was longstanding; you go from
perfectly functional sound to NO sound whatsoever with no sort of
explanation or error given in the GUI. It's definitely a usability bug,
but I agree that there are probably more important bugs out there
though. My thought is that it's a usability bug, and if it's submitted
and enough people agree it's important enough, it will be fixed. If
they don't think it's important enough, it will stay low priority.

[Bug 147230] Re: Changing workspaces via scrollwheel on desktop is problematic, especially when using touchpad

2009-06-16 Thread Phil
Wheel-based switching should be disabled by default. Most new users
will move the mouse out of their way when browsing the web, but when
they start to scroll down the page, they switch workspaces instead.
It's a very disconcerting behavior and they won't know where their
work/windows went.

If it's not disabled outright, then perhaps it should be changed so that
the scrolling only works when a window is not selected and the mouse is
hovering over the desktop. That way, people can still use the behavior
if they want, but it won't scroll workspaces if the person is trying to
scroll down in a selected browser window.

[Bug 25632] Re: SPDIF won't play PCM after playing AC3

2009-06-17 Thread Phil
Peter,

According to Hebert, it appears it was fixed. It seems like this bug
was something of a side effect of a larger problem of how sound was
handled in the first place. Considering Karmic is still really early in
its development, I'd still give it a while before you go trying it out
on your main/production system. Hopefully it doesn't regress back to
the way it is in Jaunty now before release. Here's hoping that doesn't
happen.

But if it's just the Pulseaudio and Alsa packages, you could just try
updating those packages and see what your results are. If this problem
is on a more important machine, that might be the safer route so you can
still roll back your changes. If anyone tries that out, let us know the
results.

[Bug 382703] Re: "Home Folder" has 3 different names

2009-06-17 Thread Phil
Though it sounds a little goofy to experienced users, I think it would
be easier for new users to understand "Home Folder" as opposed to just
"Home." If I'm helping a friend, I'm going to say "go to Music in your
Home Folder." Using "Home Folder" tells the user that it is the folder
they should be putting all of their files in. While "Home" is close to
that, "Home" is also used too often for a main screen or menu system for
devices and interfaces, as opposed to a location for storing files.
"Home Folder" would be more descriptive and easier to understand. Like
it or not, that's why "My Documents" has persisted for so long; it tells
the user exactly what that location is for.

Anyway, just my 2 cents. I do think the naming should be more
consistent either way though.

[Bug 25632] Re: SPDIF won't play PCM after playing AC3

2009-06-17 Thread Phil
Hebert,

Thanks for the update; that sounds like great news!

Any idea if getting consistent SPDIF sound will *require* pulseaudio
though? My main MythTV box is the one that uses SPDIF, and pulseaudio
can occasionally result in audio sync issues with Myth. I rarely
experienced it, but I removed pulseaudio anyway just because it's
unnecessary for my usage. If Karmic still plays nicely with SPDIF
without Pulseaudio, I'll finally be rid of this bug that's been plaguing
me for 3+ years, ever since I started using MythTV!

[Bug 391059] [NEW] Brasero will not burn iso to SD card

2009-06-23 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Ubuntu 8.10, Release 8.10

I expected an option to burn iso to other than only cd or dvd (which
apparently are autodetected). I wanted to burn an iso to SD flash memory

What happened was that the selection options were greyed out. I could
not use them. I could not carry out my burn.

That's why it is so important to redo the backport!
Can we expect that in the next time?

[Bug 326891] Re: 2.6.27.11 kernel breaks r8169 support for rtl8102e

2009-02-08 Thread phil
I see the same problem on my MSI Wind U100.
The wired port works on 2.6.27-9. It gives the following dmesg | grep 8169
when booted without cable connected:
[4.362683] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
[4.362723] r8169 :01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[4.362753] r8169 :01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[4.362773] r8169 :01:00.0: unknown MAC (37a0)
[4.363680] eth0: RTL8169 at 0xf883c000, 00:21:85:dc:69:42, XID 34a0 IRQ
221
[ 39.349290] r8169: eth0: link down

In 2.6.27-11, it seems to think a cable is connected even though none is:
[4.842325] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
[4.842363] r8169 :01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[4.842392] r8169 :01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[4.842412] r8169 :01:00.0: unknown MAC (37a0)
[4.843241] eth0: RTL8169 at 0xf883c000, 00:21:85:dc:69:42, XID 34a0 IRQ
221
[ 40.633048] r8169: eth0: link up

Also if I remove the module with "sudo modprobe -r r8169", then try to reload
it, I get:
[ 402.682627] r8169 :01:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 422.383316] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded

[ 422.383449] r8169 :01:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
[ 422.383487] r8169: probe of :01:00.0 failed with error -22

In both cases, the received dropped packets count constantly increases
up regardless if a cable is connected or not.

Re: [Bug 342821] Re: extra '0'

2009-03-20 Thread Phil
If you open calculator, then do any sum (note: it won't do it if you
just click to the left of the '0' straight away). Click clear (Clr), and
then 'accidently' click to the left of the zero, or press the left arrow
key on the keyboard. The '0' will then not dissapear as it should, but
stay there. (If it is meant to do this, then there is an inconsistaty,
as the '0' dissapears if you try it when you first start the program.)
Hope this helps,
Phil

It was Virtual PC 2004 that I was using. I don't know if it is still an

[Bug 71837] Fatal error on Palm during synchronization with Evolution

2006-11-14 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-pilot

I actually use Edgy 6.10 on my laptop. When I try to synchronize my Sony Clie
PDA with Evolution, the PDA gives an fatal error. This is either when I use the
/dev/pilot or the dev/ttyUSB1 setting in gnome-pilot.
Parallel to this, the gnome-Pilot applet comes up on the screen several time
(sometime up to 6 times) when I press the hot-sync button on the PDA.
When I use jpilot with the same setup (dev/ttyUSB1 or dev/ttyUSB1) all works
fine but unfortunately, jpilot does not synchronize with evolution.

Re: [Bug 66355] Re: gpilotd locks up my Palm Z22

2006-11-24 Thread Phil
Dear Matt,
thanks a lot for the helpfull tips. My sony clie now works more or less
fine, does not freeze any more and is able to synchronize. The last
thing what I have not managed up to now is to convince the applet to use
the conduits from evolution, which basically is my final goal.

You wrote that I have to copy the conduit files to the share/conduits
folder. I did this but these e-conduits do not show up in the
configuration list of the applet. Is there probably another way to get
these conduits to work.

Thanks again for this really great help.
Phil

Again thousand thanks for these hepfull tips

2006-11-26 Thread Phil
Hi Matt,
in between it is all fine with your great help. My Sony Clie is properly
working together with gnome-pilot and all syncs are running smoothly.
The last problem I had to solve was that the calendar sync stopped
somewhen in between. I solved this problem by doing a data reduction on
my palm before and deleting the dates older than 6 month from now on my
palm. Now all works fine.
I really want to say thank you for this great help and I am now the more
convinced that my change from Windows to Ubuntu was the right desicion.
Thanks a lot

[Bug 148693] Re: grub picks incorrect default root device

2008-11-29 Thread Phil
I have almost the same problem. However mine is due to a change in
hardware. Originally I had some SATA drives installed at hd0, hd1 and
now I don't. When ever the kernel is updated, my menu.lst selects the
wrong root.

Where is the default root coming from since the original installation?
Is there a way to change it so I don't have to fix the menu.lst every
time the kernel is updated?

The adobe-flashplugin does not work on amd64 systems. That's why the
backported flashplugin-nonfree would be the only proper solution.

[Bug 280894] Re: Modeline in xorg.conf ignored

2008-12-31 Thread Phil
I can confirm that modelines in xorg.conf are also ignored in Intrepid
64-bit. I supplied a modeline for my Toshiba 65HM167 but it was
ignored. Real bummer because my TV has a decent bit of overscan that
can't be adjusted on the TV's side, so I need to do it from within
Linux.

In most places the text will be black in the drop down box. This is
still hard to read since the background is dark brown. Also it does not
match other GTK apps where the text will be white.

[Bug 305333] Re: Brasero, When write all go slowly......

2008-12-26 Thread Phil
It is not only a brasero bug, but valid for the complete distribution:

K3b behaves exactly the same way:
while burning the system becomes much slower, even the mouse moves less
fluently. After burning everything is normal again. The burning itself is too
slow, too: 0,8x instead of 8x.
It is conspicious that the drive's cache (not the software cache) is not
completly filled. That is why I thought that DMA is possibly not activated but
this is not the case:

/dev/scd0:

 Model=HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40N, FwRev=JQ01,
SerialNo=K0182MK4525
 Config={ Fixed Removeable DTR<=5Mbs DTR>10Mbs nonMagnetic }

 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}

 UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 *udma2
 AdvancedPM=no
 Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-4,5,6,7

I attached the k3b report, perhaps it can help to identify the problem.

[Bug 305333] Re: Brasero, When write all go slowly......

2008-12-26 Thread Phil
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 31709 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/31709

I can even confirm it for CDs!

While burning the system reacts as I wrote before. The burning itself
does not seem to be much slower at all, but at the process the burn
speed changed heavily from 0x to 60x or even more.

The worst thing I found is that the disk failed a checksum check (it was a
ubuntu disk and the build-in check from the boot menu was not successful twice
(two different burns of course and the disk was new at the first try and has no
scratches yet).
-> Priority should be critical!

[Bug 311869] [NEW] Add driver for Sentelic Touch pad

2008-12-27 Thread phil
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

The touch pad used in the (newer) MSI Wind is made by Sentelic. Sentelic has
released a linux driver and configuration utility under GPL. It is available
at http://sourceforge.net/projects/fsp-lnxdrv/. Some of the instructions
included in the tar file seem to indicate this touch pad made be used in the
Acer Aspire One as well.
The supplied kernel code consists of a patch to the kernel ps/2 mouse driver
to recognize the touch pad and a module to communicate with the touch pad.

A discussion about building and using this driver on Ubuntu 8.10 is at

[Bug 154523] Re: fluxbox does not load menus on right click on 7.10 server install

2007-10-20 Thread phil
Hello again

tilly again...

there is a mistake in the path of the fluxbox menu. I temorarily solved
the problem doin' thin.

1. Do a "sudo update-menus"
(this is Updating your menu file)

2. Go to your fluxbox home directory for example
( /home/phil/.fluxbox)
there you have to modify one of the last lines by doing so:
[include] (/etc/X11/fluxbox/fluxbox-menu) (or the path where it's stored on
your comp)

3. If you don't understand something ask me :

coolbits [at] gmx.ch

4. And give me a reply please if it solved your problem ! Hopefully this
thing will be fixed soon

[Bug 156317] computer dies on startup and also when running grafix card test in bios, (Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000])

2007-10-23 Thread phil
Public bug reported:

I've got a Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] in my IBM/Lenovo R50,
it used to give me the bluescreen of death when I was still running Windows XP,
then it was the ati2dvag driver that did not work.
Now under ubuntu 7.1 the screen goes dead on startup right before the login
should appear. Further, when testing video card, computer goes black as well
halfway through test.
And the visual effects don't work.

[Bug 147083] Re: Can’t write more than a f ew words

2008-01-30 Thread Phil
I confirm all the comments!

Could this be a configuration problem of dasher? All that the app not does, is
catching the written words from left-hand side of the screen. In the videos
dasher does this...
http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid=5078334075080674416&q=dasher&total=370&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0

[Bug 147083] Re: Can’t write more than a f ew words

2008-01-30 Thread Phil
That was my way:
Deinstall with Synaptic dasher-data and dasher 4.6.0;
Download dasher 4.4.1 (dasher-data & dasher) from: rpmseek.com
Install with GDebi first dasher-data then dasher...
works... it catch the words right away!
Language switching result still in a program crash.

Have fun!

[Bug 16502] Re: nspluginviewer crashes badly on flashplayer

2008-01-06 Thread phil
I have the same problem with a systematic crash on visiting web pages that have
flash contents with konqueror. Rather annoying since we can't have flash with
Konqueror anymore.
Kubuntu 7.10 updated from earlier versions.
Thanks for any work to solve it.

[Bug 158043] Re: Kubuntu: adept_manager bails out in error for config files

2007-12-26 Thread Phil
Confirmed on a fresh Kubuntu Gutsy and libqt3-mt!
(This stuff with dpkg to fix it is not good as most usual users won't even get
the idea! And fixes won't help these users, as the upgrade mechanism is
blocked. That should be fixed quickly before other packages will block more
users!)

Hey, I am not sure, but my brother told me that after his Ubuntu Gutsy
installation, the screen remained black - not sure whether he was
patient enough to wait for gdm, but perhaps there is a connection...

[Bug 178400] Re: [Hardy] Xorg high CPU usage with 2.6.24 kernel and nvidia-glx

2008-02-29 Thread Phil
Confirmed.

I'm using Hardy Alpha 5 and I'm also experiencing this bug on a Dell
Optiplex GX260, with integrated Intel video, so it's not just an nvidia
thing. It makes the desktop essentially useless because it's so slow
now.
